2nd stop on the first leg of the #RIFoodFights Sandwich Showdown is International Pocket Cafe: in Middletown, RI In the culinary badlands of strip mall America, finding a place that treats ingredients with respect rather than just commodities is what makes International Pocket Cafe in Middletown, RI an oasis - a place where Mediterranean traditions aren't just copied, but honored. The place itself doesn't scream high-end dining; it's unpretentious, with bright lime-green tables and menu boards that read like a tour through the eastern Mediterranean. But as any seasoned sandwich eater knows, sometimes the most surprising food experiences happen in the most unassuming spaces. What sets this place apart is its dedication to freshness - a word so overused in restaurant marketing that it's nearly lost all meaning. But here, "fresh" isn't just marketing speak; it's evident in every bite. The concept is simple - build your own Mediterranean masterpiece. You're the architect of your own meal, a refreshing departure from places where substitutions are treated like requests to donate a kidney. And they've got Blue Raspberry Minute Maid to drink - that's always a big plus in my book, a sweet, electric-blue counterpoint to all those savory Mediterranean flavors. Their wraps are engineering marvels - substantial tent poles of flavor that require two hands and your full attention. The pita bread deserves special mention - soft, pillowy, and clearly made by someone who understands that bread should never be an afterthought. The hummus is unquestionably homemade - none of that mass-produced, over-preserved supermarket garbage that tastes like chickpeas processed through a corporate algorithm. This is the real deal - silky, nutty, with that perfect balance of tahini, lemon, and garlic that makes you wonder why you ever settled for less. The tabouleh hits all the right notes - properly seasoned, with parsley that tastes like it was chopped minutes before serving, not hours before during morning prep. There's a brightness to it that only comes from respect for ingredients and tradition. Meats - whether it's the gyro, kebab, or shawarma - are handled with equal care. Not overcooked into submission or drowning in sauce to mask mediocrity. They're seasoned assertively but appropriately, allowing the protein to still speak for itself. The traditional Mediterranean music playing in the background adds to the authentic atmosphere, creating a genuine cultural experience rather than a watered-down approximation. The staff is patient, knowledgeable, and seems genuinely interested in ensuring your wrap or plate is exactly what you want. There's no culinary pretension here - no chef trying to deconstruct Mediterranean classics into unrecognizable, Instagram-worthy abominations. Just solid, honest food done right. In a world where "Mediterranean" often means a sad falafel and some bottled tzatziki, International Pocket Cafe stands apart as a place that understands that simplicity, when backed by quality ingredients and proper technique, is the highest form of quick culinary art, which is often exactly what you need. Just be prepared to use plenty of napkins; food this good tends to require them.

Solid gyro spot across from the old Christmas Tree shop. The RI Food fights brought me here as a part of the Aquidneck Island leg. When you walk in, you're greeted with upbeat middle eastern music, really setting the vibe for your meal. The place is small but clean and bright. The guy behind the counter was super helpful answering our questions and soon he was making our wraps. With this place, you pick your base and they add the toppings of your choice, like Chipotle. I chose the classic gyro and my friend chose the hummus\tabouleh wrap. They were expertly put together and handed to us like the passing of the Olympic torch. You could tell everything was top notch. The pita was soft, so often they're stale but this place really takes care of their ingredients. All the vegetables looked great and at peak quality and the taste reflected that. I enjoyed my wrap so much that I'll be back to try some falafel soon. Another great find on the island.

Middletown for some Mediterranean fare? Why not. This is a popular spot for a reason, it's tasty, inexpensive and the portions are fantastic. The staff is very friendly and it's not just some employee slapping your wrap together to get you food and out the door, the gentleman behind the counter really took his time and care to lay everything out strategically and methodically so that every bite I got was packed with flavor from one end of the wrap to the other. I got the chicken shawarma wrap. I got it with the works. Some hot and some mild hot sauce was a good level of heat for me. It might be a little spicy for some, so be warned, if you don't like spicy then stick with the mild. Now, on the shwarma itself, I don't know if I was given the wrong thing or if it's just how they do their "shawarma", but it wasn't shawarma. They were just grilled chicken chunks in my wrap vs marinated and well seasoned pieces of chicken that were cut off a rotisserie after being thinly sliced, seasoned and stacked.. That said, it was still tasty. A little on the dry side for the chicken itself but all the sauces, hummus, and tzatziki made it hardly noticeable. All in all, a great, filling meal. Not exactly the type of place to hang out a while, more a quick bite and be on our way type of joint. They have a large menu, come, get some good food for around $12 and leave full. I almost forgot to mention, the food is all super fresh and all the proteins are grilled up to order.

Well deserving of a 5 star. As soon as I walked in I was greeted. Clean space and open kitchen so there's nothing to hide. I like the concept of build your own. Choose your protein then add what you want. The food is fresh, wraps are huge and prices aren't bad. I ordered the steak and lamb combo and the steak saw cooked fresh. It wasn't sitting in a warmer for hours like some places. Their habanero hot sauce is actually hot. Good food and awesome service. I'll be back for more. I was stuffed!

One thing I missed about being home is getting a salad from International Pocket. I love home there food is always fresh! I usually get the chicken Caesar salad and then just add on whatever toppings. The service is always quick and the workers are friendly. The ambiance is okay nothing too crazy it's just a nice quick place to grab food expecially for lunch!

Great customer service. Wraps were fresh and flavorful. A lot of options. Some desserts and beverages. Plenty of indoor seating.

Are you haveing a craving for mediterranean food? This should be the next stop International pocket makes outstanding gyro's. The tzatziki sauce is so good. Adding falafel is my favorite. They have great wraps. The chicken Caesar wrap is very good. The proportions are big and the guys are great. If you are hungry they make an international plate that has a bit of everything. The tasty baklava for desert is great way to end a good meal.

Good well priced spot for mediterranean food. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I got one of the platters which included sauces and two proteins, I got gyro and falafel. Also got a price of baklava, this version was less sweet than I am used to which I preferred.

First time here- we ordered online for take out. It was busy when I got there- the guys were all working hard and it shows in their food! We ordered onion rings, a super wrap and a combo pesto. We both love spicy and we ordered extra hot- they did not disappoint! This is the spiciest food we've eaten since we moved from New Mexico. Portions are huge and the flavors are on point! Thank you guys for giving us some great take out!!

Hubby & I were staying the night in Middletown and we had the munchies. We were looking for something somewhat healthy & fresh. International Pocket Cafe was literally around the corner from our hotel so we decided to give it a try. Cute storefront with a couple of tables inside & outside. We asked the guy behind the counter for recommendations. I went with the chicken shawarma, served with my choice of vegetables, hummus & garlic sauce in a light pita wrap. Hubby did the same but with lamb. My shawarma was so good that I couldn't stop eating it! Tons of chicken, nice crunch from the veggies, loved the creaminess of the hummus & the garlic sauce was awesome! Hubby was in the mood for an appetizer as well so we ordered the grape leaves. He also loves something spicy so the guy gave us a little container of homemade habanero sauce which is SOOOO SPICY that I couldn't eat it but hubby was happy. Delicious alternative to fast food. I wish I could purchase a bottle of their garlic sauce. YUM!

    Everything Salad

We enjoyed the Everything Salad and the Chicken Salad for dinner. Everything was delicious and the vegetables were in great condition for time of year. If I'd do it again, I'd pick items that were cooked fresh on the spot - the chicken. The falafel is served cold and the gyro meet is warmed not shaved on spot. It would also be helpful if they listed the dressing options on the counter.

The interior is decorated with a pretty white-and-blue motif that is definitely fitting. It's small, and not usually crowded so we typically can choose where to sit. It's become our favorite spot to go on the weekends, over places like Atlantic grill or aquidneck pizza. It's just so much cozier, and it's women-owned, which I will always support! The food is delicious. The spanakopita is my favorite, its fluffy and perfectly cheesy while not being dense or greasy. The greek yogurt is so creamy and delicious, the bacon is both crunchy and juicy at the same time. My bf loves to get the different wraps because he tends to like a large breakfast. They have lots of options for breakfast and lunch. I also love the vanilla iced latte, I think they put some ice cream in it. It tastes amazing. If you're wondering about YiaYia's cafe, definitely come try it. I feel like lots of people think it's only for those staying at the Sea Breeze Inn, or haven't been for whatever reason. I hope everyone has the chance to come here, local or tourist!

Well I've eaten at a lot of Greek restaurants here and in Greece and this is one of the best places I've ever been to, to have a good sit down Greek meal. Where I live there are great restaurants for any type of cuisine you can imagine and a great Greek restaurant but the one near me is more like the best fast food in Greece. (A gyro wrap is the most traditional Greek fast food you can get). If people every ask me where to go to try other great Greek dishes, I will tell them to go there, 10 minutes from where I live and and on the eat home come by and drop off their left overs. They accommodated us for a table of 7 and although it can be a bit loud, you can still talk to anyone in your party. But i would recommend getting a reservation so you don't have to rely on luck like we did. The prices might be a little higher than some of your typical sit down restaurants, but worth every penny.

We were seated all the way in the back right next to a huge picture window overlooking the outdoor patio. Outdoor patio is nice for the weather but it's in the middle of the parking lot so there's nothing to look at lol but the food makes up for that! We had the trip of dips. Hummus was great (I make mine with more garlic but that's a preference), tzatziki was chunky and a touch briney, the whipped feta with chili was a wild card but it pulled through with flying colors. Grilled octopus appetizer was to die for, on a bed of mushed split peas. It had a char on the outside, and was perfectly tender. The kefta was good, I'm used to more herbs in the Armenian version, but the lamb flavor came through even with the red sauce and cheese. I had the ribeye for dinner. They nailed this. Crispy, caramelized meat and fat on the outside, perfect medium rare in the middle. It was a large steak (maybe 12-14oz) of good thickness. The potatoes and grilled onions and shishito peppers were icing on the cake. At the table we also had the lamb chops. A great portion 3 large chops with thick wedges of fried potatoes. The pork skewer was larger than anticipated, seasoned well and not over cooked, again it came with the fried potatoes. The branzino was meticulously seared yet still flakey and moist. The bed of chickpeas was a surprise and gave major 'wow' flavor. Our waitress was lovely, she floated in when we needed something and left us alone to enjoy the company. The owners' mother also works the floor and she is adorable and so happy to be there. 100% hit this spot.
