    Trotter Sandwich

It was just ok - high prices for a sandwich that was more like a cafeteria sandwich. Suggestion of higher quality bread offerings, cutting the sandwich and adding salt/pepper, prompting for any additions to the sandwiches so the offerings don't feel so basic.

On my latest trip to Rhode Island, I was looking for a great place to grab a sandwich and eat in the car near the ocean (since it was winter). The place is picked out wasn't open and I luckily remembered I'd seen The Salty General in a magazine. My mom and I popped in and were greeted warmly by the owner. The menu is small but you can customize the sandwiches. They have a great selection of chips and also fresh brownies! There isn't seating but it's so close to Narragansett Town Beach, it fit exactly what I was looking for! I choose a Turkey sandwich on a soft sub roll and a bag of spicy dill chips. The owner recommended the flavor and they were delicious (especially if you love putting some chips inside your sandwich like I do). My mom got the tuna sandwich and regular chips. We got a brownie to share. I'm not joking when I say this may be the best sub sandwich I've eaten! The ingredients tasted so fresh and it was the perfect ratio of meat, cheese, bread, and condiments. My mom said the same thing about her tuna salad, which surprised me since she's very picky about it. The sandwiches on sub rolls were large enough that we ate half for lunch and wrapped up the other half-- which was perfect since we did a lantern walk in Newport and were hungry again afterwards! We deeply regretted not getting our own brownies.... And a few extra to take home. They were so fudgy, exactly how you want a decadent brownie and with a touch of sea salt on top to balance the sweetness. We honestly tried to work another visit into our schedule the next day but we were heading back to NY and just didn't have time. It will definitely be our "go-to" place on future trips. I highly recommend visiting, not only because the sandwiches are amazing but I love that it's a small, family-owned business. I wish I'd taken a few more pictures of the restaurant and the food but ... I was super hungry! Next time, I'll make sure to better document the visit!

Delicious sandwiches! Stopped by with my friend for lunch and the service was just as great as the food. Will definitely be back!

Also, I got the brownie, which is so yummy and is the perfect balance between sweet and salty.

I am so glad we did, because this is definitely a new favorite spot and worth the drive over the bridges! It was a rainy afternoon, and my grandma and I rolled into their ample parking lot to get some coffee and a midafternoon snack. The shop is sparkling clean with plenty of seating at cafe tables and a cozy couch section. The clientele was a mixture of students from URI and professionals working remotely. All were sipping lattes and seemed happy - a good vibe right from the get go. The barista was upbeat and knowledgeable about the menu, recommending their house made Pumpkin Spice Latte (I had to try it!). I am so glad I did, because theirs is made with pumpkin puree, so it's not sugary or cloying like other varietals you may be familiar with. We were also informed that all their baked goods are made fresh daily, and I was pleased to see the pastry case was clean as well (this is a less common occurrence unfortunately, than you would think). We tried the Blueberry Muffin, and it was FABULOUS! I am already looking forward to going back and trying more. Don't be fooled by the humble roadside plaza exterior- Fuel is certainly worth the stop.

Sat down to eat our snack, staff began vacuuming and washing floors at 2:00, when they're supposed to close at 3:00. My friend was uncomfortable, as it felt like they wanted us to leave... so we left. Another customer was walking in right around 2:00. She appeared very confused, because someone was vacuuming, and no one was working at the counter. Not sure if she waited to order or not. Is it me, or is it rude to begin loudly and aggressive cleaning a coffee shop one full hour before the posted closing time? It's odd.

They are committed to using healthy ingredients. The Morning Buns from this bakery were highly recommended by a local. They did not disappoint. Order included; **Morning Buns - their rendition of a cinnamon bun. "The bakers work this croissant dough for several days, folding in cinnamon, brown sugar, butter, and love. Guaranteed to be one of the best pastries you've ever tasted." The buttery layers melted in my mouth. The cinnamon was fragrant and did not dominate the flavor of the sweet pastry. I understand why they are the most popular item on the pastry menu. **Almond Danish -- My favorite in a close competition after a sampling. The almond paste gave them a pronounced nut flavor as well as a slightly chewy bite. **Monkey Bread pastry -- although fresh tasting, it was a little dry and only mildly flavorful. It was my least favorite. **Chocolate Chip Cookies -- crunchy at edges with a little chew and a pleasant aftertaste of butter. Excellent! As a novice baker of Sourdough Breads, I was pleased to learn that the Bakery has a Sourdough focus using sourdough starter for most products including the croissants believing it's healthier and easier to digest. Amazing! Wish I lived closer. The bread selection was impressive and included Sourdough. Sliced upon request, they are popular and often sold out. I was advised to get there early.

Amazing coffee and baked goods served by genuinely amazing people. An excellent experience... no surprise to overhear them chatting away with their "regulars" who seemed to be there (I laughed when I overheard someone ordering something different than their "usual order"). Charming interior, with space to eat on site. Over two visits in 2 days, I had their morning bun (OMG), spinach feta croissant and pain au chocolate... cannot wait to go back on my next trip to RI (or better yet, please open in NYC ). I think everything was $5.85/each.
