Hello I am writing to share my recent experience with Keen…read more I was interested in a pair of Keen liberty with a heel in size 12. I called the Portland garage store asking if they had a pair. The salesman who answered found a pair and sat them aside for me. Once I got to the shop he pulled out the boots and they looked great and were the correct size but had the wrong heel being a wedge sole. I asked him to get the 90 degree heel version and he told me they do not stock the heel version in the store. I thought that was strange being the flagship store and said so but the employee told me they cant stock everything. I tried on some Liberty in size 12 and they felt small. All my other keens fit in size 12 and have a wide toe box. I asked the employee if the leather on the toe was just leather or had a toe stiffener. He told me the boots had no toe stiffener and were just leather. Some I ordered in a size 12 even though they felt tight because I figured the leather would stretch. I ended up paying for 2 pairs of boots. Some grey steel Gibson boots and ordered the Liberty with heels. When my boots arrived a week later I opened the box and was disappointed to see the scratches and wear on the leather. It is so frustrating because all the Liberty boots in the store looked great. I own a pair of 6" Dover in magnet, 6" Cinicinati in belgian, 6" Dover in brown all ordered from Zappos and they all arrived mint condition. I actually got a 10% discount from that store. So it would have been cheaper to just order from them. I wanted to support Keen and check out the garage location as I had never been. The experience was lacking. The employee pulled the wrong boot, then claimed they didn't stock the one I wanted. The problem with that is when I called a few days later the next employee told me they have always stocked the heel version of the liberty. So did this guy lie to me to cover up his mistake of pulling the wrong boot? Also he does not even know what he is talking about when selling boots. The Liberty in a soft toe has a toe stiffener. I suggest he watch this video where a bandsaw cuts the boots in half. It clearly shows a huge toe brace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP1n3tx_vtE&t=90s It totally makes sense just wrapping your knuckles on them as it feels like hitting wood. Also no wonder they felt tight even though all my other keen boots fit in that size. Even if the boots had not arrived damaged. I would have needed to exchange for 1/2 size larger since the toe stiffener eats up so much toe box room. It kind of baffles me why the flagship boots have a smaller toe box. This was a frustrating, time wasting experience. I think I will be taking a break from Keen.

We went into the KEEN garage and Zia was super helpful and patient as we tried on different sizes, even though we were still looking around and weren't ready to buy yet. I love this place. super friendly, fun neighborhood to walk around in, and they have a shoe vending machine out front :)

There is a tiny parking lot for store customers only, if you have anything larger than compact you might not be able to fit. We were greeted right away and my daughter was able to quickly find what she was looking for and we were helped by Morgan who helped us with hints to break into the boots faster. My daughter is now doing to work in her new boots with no worries about slipping and also being fashionable.

He told me "he could tell I didn't have large feet" I find that to be misogynistic and abusive because obviously I know the size of my own feet and what I can wear and walk in. I was wearing a men's 14 at that time. The first time I came in I had a really positive experience, I was looking for a beanie and was given two free beanies for some reason, I was wowed by the kindness. So I would say hit or miss.

Each store has the same shoes and then only change their stock ever 4 years... or so it seams. I know I could always buy online, but that sucks! You gotta try a shoe on, stomp around, and see if it feel weird. You need a brick and mortar store to do this. Finding Oddball was like finding a thirst quenching oasis in the middle of the hottest desert. They have a great selection of trendy shoes. Hell I bought a pair of DC's! I've always wanted DC's, but my mammoth feet have always been deprived of their awesomeness. The employees were friendly and helpful. I love the rapport they have built with each other. Hearing them playfully insult each other made me chuckle. They did say there we going to be selling clothing soon. It's a small place, so I'm not sure how great of a selection they will have. Regardless, I'm still excited to see what they'll have.

To be honest, a lot of the shoes they recommended at Fleet Feet personally I didn't like. Didn't like the look or the feel of. But it also could have been because the shoes I had wearing, were no longer serving their purpose. At the end of it, I did end up liking one shoe, but it was the color way that threw me off. I left and sat in my car, thought about oh I can get this online by tomorrow for $10 more, but I thought about how much the salesman(Michael) helped me and didn't make me feel obligated to buy anything, which I really loved. Which was the reason I came back inside the store to purchase the shoes . 10/10 would recommend. Prior to coming, i wanted an idea of what to expect, I saw people getting inserts recommended an Michael emphasized just try it, if its not comfortable we will move on from them. The man who sold me this pair of Hoka One One is perhaps the most vivacious, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and happy person I have ever met in a shoe store. He is the antithesis of Al Bundy. I have been hiking my entire vacation out here in Portland, clocking something like 40 miles in five days. (don't judge if you're a big-time hiker. I'm just getting started. I need time for tattoos, meeting my cousin for the first time, and other vacation type stuff) anyway the point is my feet are tired. Hoka is to feet what Visine is to a stoner's eyes. So I went in there. This guy was like a super happy positive ant lion. There was no possible way I was leaving without a pair of shoes, less I endure the sight of his bright smile faltering for just one second. And I don't regret it. But there's more. You see I missed my flight this morning because of a delay and the airline had to reschedule it all, and comp me a hotel room near this shopping mall. So instead of going home today, I'm stuck next to 20 acres of retail, which thankfully includes bars. Four margaritas in, I'm wandering around again and I see him walking a couple out. Each has the exact same bag that I had, with the same blue box emblazoned with the same brand. They are praising him for his knowledge and thanking him for the $600 they just dropped. Corporate, if you're reading this, this dude is regional manager material. I wanted to slap him high five, and yell, "Bro! Hoka! F@&k yeah!!" But that seemed like it would be a lot. And none of those three had been drinking margaritas all day. Anyway, point is, buy some shoes here.

But I need walking shoes for an upcoming trip, so I tried Shoe Mill. It was a pleasant surprise to find they still use "old-fashioned" approach here. Instead of slinging boxes at me and leaving me to sort it out, the salesperson, Susan, helped me through the entire visit. She listened to what I needed and was very knowledgeable about the shoes and proper fit. It took 10-12 pairs to find what I was looking for and she was upbeat and kind the whole time, while also helping several other customers. I ended up with two pairs of walking shoes that are not only comfortable, but super cute! Best shoe shopping experience I've had in years and I'm actually looking forward to my next visit.
