Great bbq and very pleasant folks! A special thanks for the treat for our four legged companion while we awaited our carry out order!

(This one is a bit from the archives as the visit took place in early June. While a few details have been lost to the sands of time the general gist is accurate.) A few years back I worked with a guy who was born and raised in Grandy and when I started coming down to OBX he swore up and down that this place had the best BBQ and/or ribs in the area. I don't play with my food which means that for me ribs are out and Pigman's does not keep hours during Christmas week which is when our past visits occurred. So this time in season was the perfect chance to finally give this place a go. The set up is nearly identical to going to a chain place like Mission BBQ. Walk up to the register, place your order then they bring it to your table when it's ready. I don't know if they always bring it to your table but with only one other occupied table at 6ish on a Tuesday in June they brought ours out. Turkey-Que Boat - Pork BBQ Sandwich - Pork BBQ Plate - Half Rack Rib Plate I had the turkey and it was very, very good. The meat was tender and the sauce they use has a very good flavor. Speaking of Mission BBQ, I prefer their Bay-B-Que sauce to anything I sampled at Pigman's but that's just me and I don't know jack about BBQ. The thing I was most surprised about was that the bun for the sandwich didn't fall apart. The portion size here is not small, the food is messy and the bun does not look sturdy but it held up a-ok. Two brief sidebars. One is that for me the hushpuppies are just...no. Words like greasy and foul come to mind. And to think that they give you some buttery spread to slather on top of them as if that makes anything better. Just. No. Another no for me would be the sweet tea. I really, really hate sweet tea but the guy at the counter was busting my balls that I should try it and that he made it himself and that it was the best I would ever have. Maybe so but it still tastes like shitty sugar water. Thanks, but no thanks. Everyone who ate enjoyed their food with the best in class being the half rack of ribs. I was told that they were fantastic in terms of texture and flavor. Overall Pigman's isn't bad. Some of the pricing is definitely on the high/beach/tourist side but you certainly do not get cheated in terms of portions as they are very generous. In the future I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here but every time we're in the area we always stop at Nags Head Woods Preserve which means driving right by here so we'll more than likely be back. read more

Starting from when you drive up , the outside brings a smile with lots of fun paintings / wood photo opts. You walk in to Happy Smiling Staff , Very clean tables and floors and the Glorious smell of BBQ . The price for product and portion is very affordable and delicious! The pork and half chicken very nicely seasoned and juicy ! The Baked beans are advertised as vegetarian, and they have a great flavor ! The hush puppies are made with a sweet corn meal - trust the process and dip it in the whipped butter provided , you'll be asking for more ! We ordered dinner ahead of time as we were on our way to Frisco. Why? Because Pigman's is the BEST. BBQ in OBX! Pulled beef and pork and all of the sides were delicious. Fun atmosphere in side and we were greater with a want welcome to pick up take out. We felt like a valued customer. I even left a tip and was thanked which doesn't happen anymore. My first time here and I didn't want to get fries as a side. I asked the person taking my order what were the best sides. He said the collards and mac & cheese. Bbaaabbyyy!!!! Just give me the Collards!!!!! There is not one Soul Food place I've ever been that has good collard greens! These collards are crack!!! These are your grandma in the kitchen on a Sunday greens!! Smack yo mama they taste so good greens. I ordered an extra side of collards and took a bowl home!!! Only order them if you don't have an issue with vinegar. last Friday Danielle and i had lunch at Pigman's and we both thought it was really good. we each had the pulled pork plate (pulled pork sandwich w/ fries and hushpuppies). the pork was moist with lots of vinegar based mop sauce. in fact, i decided to have a second. each sandwich came w/ a little tiny cup of coleslaw that was perfect on the sandwiches. the hushpuppies were didn't taste like the hushpuppies i'm used to but were great when dipped in one of the 5 sauces available at the sauce station. Danielle and i preferred the Cock Sauce (i didn't name it), which is a sweet - almost Thai Chili-like sauce I'm told is used w/ chicken and the Cheryl's Secret Sauce (Alabama White Sauce). neither is intended for pork (rather chicken for each) but they were great on the sandwiches nonetheless. i added a side of baked beans. they were good but a little too rich for my tastes (too much molasses). lastly, Danielle bought some pork rinds which were also really good and were a nice snack on our 12-hour drive home. check it out if in the area. if not in the area, they have a web site from which you can order sauces. read more

AMAZING food! This place has kind employees and quick service. My only complaint is the drinks and ambiance. The drinks have a weird taste but I don't blame them. They could not do anything about it. I have admitted before I am not a big fan of Pigman's as a representative of North Carolina barbecue. Actually, it would be better in another context, where dry hunks of pulled pork are normally offered (say for example, St Louis, where I live). I decided it had been long enough and since Ms T likes Pigman's we returned. I wanted to sample the "award winning" ribs. Ms T ordered a Barbecued Chicken sandwich. It was large and was moist. She found it to be OK, it made the bun very wet so the leftovers were scraped off to take home. I ordered a barbecue platter and a half rack of ribs, with slaw and collards. The barbecue serving was huge. This must have been a half pound. In my previous review, I commented that the sandwich was not large. Portions this time were generous. The barbecue, although not typical ENC style is better than I remembered. This time it was not gray meat, it was sauced with their red barn paint sauce and actually was pretty good. It just is not classic ENC. You may prefer it. It certainly is not mid-western sugary sweet. I am still looking for edible ribs in North Carolina. I guess my issue is I like dry-rubbed and smoked back ribs that are completely cooked in a smoker until nice and tender. These started with a bad cut. I think it is what is left after back ribs are cut off. They were not St Louis cut nor were they full spare ribs. Consequently, they have a very short bone and the weird jelly bone tip. The outside has the very chewy meat while the actual rib meat is done to mush. The ribs were not apparently rubbed, the meat had no seasoning or salt. They were sauced when served and that was a good thing, because without the sauce, you could not eat them. Good ribs do not need sauce. Ms T observed and I agree that all of the meats have a distinctive flavor of meat fat that has vaporized on an electric roaster element or perhaps a gas grill element. It is not wood smoke, although some of that is there. It is not from charcoal. The chunky slaw was very good, with nice sweet-sour balance. The collards were mild and very tender with some smoked meat. I liked them. They were not sweetened. I asked for the collards instead of the beans. Pigman's is probably rated about right at 3-1/2 stars overall. The barbecue is a three. The ribs are a 2-1/2. I would quit trying ribs around here if the joints would quit advertising their awards for the ribs, daring me to try them. I am having my local barbecue at High Cotton, Carolina Barbecue, Martelle's and TL's. I am having my ribs at my home in St Louis or in Memphis. read more

Pigman's opened yesterday for the first time this season. We ordered over the phone and was able to pick up the food in less than 10 minutes (we were conveniently at the Wright Brothers National Memorial). We ordered: - 1/2 rack of ribs: Best item on the menu! The meat fell off the bones, and you can taste the smokiness. - Beef BBQ plate: Delicious! Meat was super tender and seasoned well with their tangy Rib Roarin' sauce. This exceeded expectations! - Pork BBQ plate: Good though we found it a bit on the drier side. I added their famous Pigman's Cock Sauce to it, and it was perfect. - Corn Bread: So good! Two pieces came warm and moist. - Banana Pudding dessert: We'd pass on this, unless you like the type of pudding that comes from powdered mix (that's what it tasted like). For both plates, they came with baked beans, cole slaw, bread and hush puppies. Baked beans and slaw were good! We didn't eat the bread or hush puppies since we were saving room in our stomachs for the BBQ. We have no pictures, because we ate up the food too quickly. :) We plan on coming back before we leave OBX to try their award-winning wings! This is my go-to place when on vacation in OBX. During my weekly stays, I'm here like every other day. Food is good and is prepped pretty quickly after you place your order. There is inside and outside seating (inside was very crowded last time I was there). Pro tip: order take-out over the phone and things will be ready by the time you get there and you'll be able to take your food to the outside seating and avoid the waiting time. They have turkey-q and tuna-q for those who don't eat meat and those are both my go-to. Second pro tip: do yourself a favor and buy a pint of you favorite bbq on your last day and bring it home with you (you can buy some rolls and enjoy them when you get home from traveling all day). Their sweet potato fries aren't really the best I've had but their regular fries, hush puppies and coleslaw is good. read more

From the Craft Red Oak Beer, Sweet Tea, Brisket, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Slab of Ribs, Potato Salad, Coleslaw was awesome!.
