The only thing I regret is not getting the large bowl! The regular bowl was filling but the large bowl was a meal for two that I could have brought back home for a midnight snack! You pay a set fee for a single trip to the grill. The vegetable selections were quite large and well prepared. They offered all the basic meat selections like beef, pork, and chicken. A little disappointed that lamb was not offered while we're there. The sauce selections were plentiful, but also noticed that hot chili oil was missing too. You make your own bowl: fill with protein, add veggies, condiments and the sauce guy whips it up into a big bowl filled with either white or fried rice. I sorta wished I said no rice since I didn't fill my small bowl with a ton of delicious noodles. The meals come with a choice of soup: miso or egg drop. Though a tad salty the soup was hot. We had a late lunch here after an afternoon at the beach. We were in the mood for something not heavy but also something not too light, and this place was perfect as we could select exactly how much we wanted for lunch. Right off the main highway, there's plenty of parking here with many table options inside (and outside?) the restaurant. We were seated, got our drinks, and were given a ticket to go and build our bowl. There were plenty of meat and vegetable options plus sauces to add flavor to your meal. You also pick between fried or white rice. After building your bowl and giving it to the chef, you head back to your table to enjoy your choice of either miso or egg drop soup. The server then brings your bowl when ready and also yum yum sauce if you'd like (I highly suggest yes!). The servers were very nice and friendly. The inside decor was simple and clean. I ordered the large bowl which cost over $20. They have a good selection of vegetables first, then the beef, chicken, etc. You only get to come through once so load it up. The guy who cooks your food on the grill, drops the empty bowls in a pile (maybe it's too hard to set them down) which causes a loud noise, so if you have misophonia, watch out. There were 3 people in front of me but It took a while for my order to come out. The guy at the front didn't ask if I wanted my order for here or to go. I never said to go, so by default, that means I wanted my order for here. Makes sense right? When the food came out, he gave me my order in a to-go box. Then I asked for a bowl from the guy who took my order. He appeared to be confused then said, "an empty bowl?" Uh, yes, that would be preferable wouldn't it? The guy who cooks the food, gets a big orange bowl and grabs it with his fingers INSIDE of the bowl. Absolutely no mindfulness about how his germs will be getting into other people's food. I know he didn't do that on purpose but how can people not be aware of this, particularly after covid? I'd say the taste of the good was mediocre. After placing my order I realized I didn't order a drink. I asked the guy who took my orde if there are refills. He said I can give you another when I leave. Before I left I asked some girl there (possibly the owner) for a refill. She sees the box on my table and says we don't do refills for to-go orders. I saw her while I was eating at my table for a while so surely she would have known that I was there for a while and therefore not a to-go order. The meat in my bowl was raw and I didn't notice till I pulled a raw piece out of my mouth 3/4 through. I'm now home with food poisoning all afternoon. ** update I'm still holding the toilet about 8 hours later in bad shape. I wish that I had made a point to show the waiter before I got up and left but I don't want to cause a scene while at a paid work lunch with my boss. But now I just feel stupid for letting it ride. Glad I got to go here today! Itli was open and all when Yelp said it would be. And what a great experience it was. Wow, so there were a ton of protein (see: meat) options. Looks like maybe there were more but they ran out, being that I got there 21 minutes before they closed! I ended up getting the cajun pork and some lamb. After picking my meats, I stopped at the spice rack and threw in some five spice mix, and some orange peel. I then moved on to the vegetables, where I grabbed a good portion of broccoli, a few sliced tomatoes, some noodles, baby corn, thin sliced carrots, and a few cucumber pieces. Near the end of this bar I threw in some fresh cilantro (mmm). At the end was the sauce bar. I tossed some soy sauce directly on my bowl, then put some orange sauce in a cup. Then I handed the whole thing to the chef, who threw it on the grill. I got to watch it cooking up, and boy was that a treat. This to-go dinner came with a choice of rice and a choice of soup, too. All-in-all, it was very filling. The food was delicious...but of course it was, I got to choose exactly what went into it. Also, the quality of the produce and meat was great, so it made for a great meal. They had some fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade spiked with sake, too...so uh, get that. read more

My husband and I took my sisters in law out to lunch to celebrate. I have a soybean allergy. The server was extraordinary. She was able to tell me which items did not have soybeans. The chef cooked my items on a separate grill to avoid contamination. The Mongolian grill allows you to pick your beef, chicken and shrimp along with your choices of vegetables and sauces. This trip to the obx has brought new venues for us to try, courtesy of year-round locals. My son and I were invited to check out Khans with their family who are regulars. Khans is a joint where your culinary talents are unleashed. Well, to a point. You enter and are seated. Your order is taken for appetizers, drinks, adult and family friendly, and bowl size, of which there are two and they provide the bowl you will use. Included are your choice of Miso or Egg Drop soups. And, you fill out a card with your name which you take with you to the line. Then you vamoose to a cafeteria style line, grab a tray and then fill your bowl. This is where you can prepare the ingredients to your own meal. You start with protein's consisting of seafood and land locked items. I chose chicken, beef, sausage and shrimp. Then, seasoning. At least a dozen to choose from. I chose 5-Spice. Then veggies, starches, tofu and other stuff. Then sauces. After selecting your stuff, you leave your bowl and tray in queue for the grilling process. Then, your food is brought to you in a interestingly shaped bowl. My creation resembled fusion of Cajun and Asian influences and was very tasty. Consumers build their creations around their tastes. What a gem!!! This place was perfect! It's like you do your own hibachi! Food comes back pretty quick, and unless you are just a big eater the medium bowl is plenty the fried rice was legit and the service was great!! I loaded my bowl with veggies and some meat and fish and pretty much ate it all. The family lived there's too! I actually polished off my bonus sons meal that was left over....please don't judge! . I guess I am thinking since we are on vacation the extra good food won't count. Yeah right! Anyway, I am hoping my hubby decides to go back before we leave! We went to Khan's Mongolian Grill with a party of 9. There is a semi-private section with two long tables where we were seated, so they can accommodate larger groups. Our first experience here, so we learned a valuable lesson as some of the patrons clearly frequent this place. You can order a kid's bowl (for kids only), small bowl, or large bowl. Adults should opt for the small bowl and practice your balancing skills. You can pile on ingredients as high as you're able. As long as it stays intact, the cooks will stir fry what's 'on' the bowl. I got a larger bowl and didn't fully take advantage of it. Choose your sauces and wait for the server to bring your creation to you. There is a fruit area, but there were too many flies on the watermelon. That was the main knock on this place. read more

This place is the BEST! I'm a huge fan of this type of food, and I love that it's so customizable! You get to put whatever you want into a bowl, including sauces and spices, and then they cook it for you. Very fun to create a meal and watch them cook it! The OBX is really stepping their game up when it comes to expanding. I hadn't visited the OBX in years so I was shocked when my family recommended this place. It did not disappoint. Unlike other Mongolian grills this one is a one trip restaurant. It seems like others I have visited it was unlimited trips to the grill but once again I haven't ate out in awhile plus I no longer do buffets. We watched Khan's being constructed from the ground up in March and April of 2019, wondering what it would be. When we returned in October it was completed so we decided to give it a try. We spend enough time at the outer Banks now that we don't feel obligated to eat seafood at every meal. We will get take-out from China King and Pok's once in a while and have visited New China's lunch buffet. The addition of a Mongolian style grill like this, whether authentic or not, is a nice addition. The place was quite busy, regardless of a nasty Nor'easter blowing in on a Friday night in November. They appear to be doing good business. We were seated immediately and briefed on the process, which works very well. We opted for the single bowl and it was plenty, although for the serious eaters, you can choose the unlimited bowl for a few bucks more. The soups are kind of a throw-away; egg-drop, chicken broth or miso. They are all kind of boring for a Mongolian place. It would be nice to have hot and sour. The bread offerings are also like second thoughts; a tortilla and naan, neither of which go with the food. They are not good quality but are not needed with rice based dishes, so we just ignored them and would tell them to keep them next time. The fruit bar was of low quality and we would also ignore in the future. The main attraction, however, works very well. I found that if you follow their instructions for seasoning, it will be a little on the light side, but it is a good place to start. Next time I would put a couple of ladles of their recommended House sauce on my meat before covering it with vegetables so it could marinate for a few minutes at least before it is grilled. The issue is that if you wait to put it on the top of your bowl, the meat really never gets much seasoning. I loaded up with crushed red chile, black pepper and the spicy Hunan sauce. I did manage to get some nice heat in the dish. Next time I would certainly use a little more of the house sauce than they recommend. There is a very nice variety of vegetables to choose from. You want to load the bowl full to overflowing because they cook down somewhat. We both selected fried rice and it was a good choice, adding some additional flavor. In summary, we enjoyed our main bowl and would skip the bread and fruit bar. I might try to season the egg drop soup with some things from the bar. Watch that floor! The floor was super slippery, whether from grease (which you will smell like when you leave) or from a little moisture on our shoes from the light rain outside or the combination, I don't know, but it was treacherous. Strong three stars for the bowl, 2 stars for the soup, fruit and bread, but A-OK overall. read more

Everything is of good quality and has great flavor, and you do get a lot of the food. The odd: You fill out a card to place your order. Under the stuff you picked to be cooked is either white or fried rice. You drop your food off at the chef then return to your table where the food is delivered, missing on the cooking "experience". The bad: The first obvious is the price is high for a single bowl, although it is a large amount of food. It takes awhile to get your food. Desert from the "fabulous" ice cream bar is extra, and it doesn't look so fabulous. The fruit and cookie selection is limited and the cookies are dry store bought cookies. The parking lot is also terrible, the town really screwed the business over by not allowing direct access to the highway. Overall good, but I prefer Mongolian BBQ at other establishments that I've visited. read more

They more than made up for our first experience. I think a good rule of thumb is to go during the less busy hours as this place is packed during dinner time. When we got there 45 minutes later the restaurant was almost empty, and appeared to have a "serve yourself" component to it, so I'm unsure how an order of three things could take so long. Love this concept - fresh meats, veggies, noodles, tofu, and all kinds of different options, and every customer gets to make their own combination however they would like. Pile it up into a bowl, add your chosen spice mixes, as well as sauces (be careful, some of their sauces need to be on the side in a separate bowl as they can burn on the grill if added too soon). It's a bit of a challenge to get the right mix of sauces & spices to make it what you want, but it's fun to try. I used too much of their house blend with basil (I love basil, so wanted more of that), but ended up heavy on the saltiness because of all of the soy sauce that was in the house blend. Next time, I'll try another mix of sauces. The staff were all very friendly & helpful. They took good care of us. Only downside was that they only offer Pepsi beverages - would have been nice to be able to BYOB some wine or beer, but not sure if that is allowed in NC (alcohol laws vary so much by state). But the food was fresh & tasty, and this will be a place to visit on our next visit to the OBX. read more
