Sandwiches are always good here! I like ordering the Triple Soprano and the Turkey Avocado! The portion of meat is generous! There is usually a long line around 12pm-1pm when everyone is on lunch. They have drinks, chips, desserts, fruit, and sandwiches. The menu size is decent and the selection is wide. Visiting mom in the hospital and after feeding the meter, I wandered over to the Pill Hill Deli. It's been here since I worked here over 30 years ago so I had to check it out. Of course ownership and the menu has changed but glad to see a variety of reasonably priced sandwiches. Going with the classic turkey, I upgraded to the wheat roll. When placing the order, the woman asked, "and what kind of cheese do you want?". I said provolone knowing it would be an add on in price. So, a $7.95 sandwich becomes $10 with tax. I give her credit in knowing how to upsell in a way that most folks may not notice. The nickel and diming really bothers me but it is what it is. I get the "Hot Turkey" on Dutch crunch, which is delicious. My partner gets the cold salami sandwich with sprouts on a whole wheat roll, which he confirms tastes every bit as good as it looks. Mostly, we love that the sandwiches are a reasonable size and assembled well, so they are on the less messy side. It is a two person operation, with one gentleman making the sandwiches and and a friendly cashier taking orders. She always repeats back your order, which is very appreciated because I am usually holding something or other and it's nice to know they want to get the order right. This place was just what I needed today while in the neighborhood and feeling hungry. So glad I stopped here for lunch! I'm sometimes hesitant to even order tuna from a deli because I'm a bit picky and don't like sweet relish in tuna. I was thinking of trying the taco Tuesday street tacos, but opted for tuna on toast instead. So happy I did! The tuna was spectacular! Great flavor, super fresh with crisp lettuce, perfect toast, a little Mayo and sliced dill pickles! My friend had the Turkey club, which also looked amazing. Been open and doing bizness for the PIll Hill community for 20 years! Sprightly Asian proprietor who was manning that register by 0630 and told me that retirement is indeed on her horizon. A no-nonsense deli tres convenient for the Pill Hill community; grabbed a deli muffin sandwich after work this morning, and, for less than $3, was filled and pleasantly surprised by the fluffiness of the egg, the quality of the ham, and the muffins were toasted absolutely perfectly. The deli itself, located on a corner, has a very large selection of everything from salads, to deviled eggs, to wonderful fruit salads, to a pastry/donut section, to many, many varities of sandwiches. Today, I ordered a turkey sandwich with provolone cheese on toasted sourdough bread. It was DELISH! Well made, fresh, with just enough mayo, mustard, pickle, lettuce, tomatoe. One more slice of turkey would have made it heartier. I paid for sprouts, but I don't remember seeing them or tasting them on the the sandwich. Nervertheless, I'll be back for seconds. I've had their hot turkey (avocado, cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato) and it's delicious. They can be a little heavy handed on the mayo, so I would suggest asking for light mayo. Although I haven't tried their pho or wonton soup, I like they offer an array of options. Although Pill Hill isn't a deli I would venture out for, it's a good option on days that I don't have lunch on campus. STEAMED MILK MADNESS I'm not a fan of cold milk. One day I just started thinking about it and decided to stick to broccoli for my calcium needs. Warm milk however, I can do. I never see it on menus though so it never really comes to mind. Imagine my surprise when steamed milk was the second item on the wall menu at PHD. I ordered this and a cheese nacho which was only a couple dollars. There was a nominal charge for jalapenos (which I think should come standard), and for $0.40 I would have like to have seen a couple more on the plate! The woman I was with ordered a 12 oz latte and our total came to just under $8. Even though only a couple people were ahead of us when we ordered, by the time we sat down there was a line out the door. I saw lots of stethoscopes in pockets and assume there's a nearby school because everyone looked so young. Steamed milk arrived and I sipped on the foamy top, swirled it around for a minute, set the cup down and patiently waited for it to cool. I thought a few minutes cooling would render the drink safe; I cautiously took a small sip and seriously scalded my entire tongue and throat. I was shocked at the temperature. Who doesn't remember the hot coffee case that won the plaintiff millions? Most people don't actually understand a lot about this case and are quick to call it frivolous. Not me. The 80 year old woman was so severely burned she was hospitalized 8 days and had skin graft surgery. The business had been warned and cited for temperature violations. The were serving it at around 190 degrees (normal is 140). I felt like my mouth was drinking milk yesterday somewhere in between these two temps. Cool it down, PHD! read more

Pill Hill is conveniently located on 30th Street, right next to Summit Hospital, so it gets busy around lunchtime with all the students and staff.
