Best sandwich's and pizza around. I worked up in pine valley for over a year and this place was always bomb nice ambiance, all friendly people working the register excellent customer service, the food is really good and fresh..

Nice liquor selection. Take a flask if you are hiking in the winter cold!

The Pine Valley Store is a classic middle of nowhere, Mom n Pop store. We stopped here a couple times for last chance gasoline before heading up into the mountains. They have all the same stuff that you would expect from any other convenience store. Maps, beer, liquor, chips, candy, gum, cigarettes, pornorgraphic magazines, jerky, etc... Apparently, they also have an in store deli, however, the menu was very limited. You are probably better off bringing your own food, and hitting them up for drinks and chips. The counter lady was pretty helpful with giving us information about local trails and hikes. She even set us up with some "California Adventure Passes" that are required if you want to park and go exploring in the Cleveland National Forest. The pass was 25 bucks, which was good for a year. They will throw in a second pass for an extra 5 bucks. This makes a nice gift for nature lovers. Directly behind this store is a MASSIVE place to chill out and eat or let the kids loose on the playground. The park is called the "Pine Valley County Park." Again, it is huge and has plenty of free parking as well as some fairly clean restrooms. If you are like me, you will find the Pine Valley Store to be a lifesaver if you are low on gas, and want to pick up some snacks before a hike. They also have tons of impulse items at the counter, which I always like. Don't be too quick to pass them up, as they are the only game in town.

So, I grabbed a room across the street at the Mt Laguna Lodge and ate many of my meals at The Outpost. I am going to be completely honest here... I fell in love with this place because of so many reasons, but mainly because it took care of "my people"... yes, the backpackers. The service was so incredible. From the friendly guys in the back on the grill supplying me with ingredient information to the professionalism of the lovely young lady working the register... to the barkeeps to an amazingly talented woman from San Diego who was the musical talent one evening... I seriously don't feel you could assemble a more amazing cast to encounter all in one place. The food... what kind of 5-star review of a restaurant would be complete if you didn't mention the food? Well, it was equally as great ... I found no reason to claim that the selections I purchased were anythjng less than flawless.... yeah, flawless. With a lot of people coming up from Greater San Diego on the weekends, they put out some incredibly amazing BBQ offerings (but only on the weekends). I never wanted to leave and they probably thought I was moving to the mountain beeeeecause mosat backpackers stay overnight ans then they are gone. Not me, lol. I need to say that no proper review of this business would be complete without saying that the husband and wife team running the place were well beyond super cool to me. Oh, and you know you stayed in town a good long time when you leave knowing all about little league teams having games canceled because of the weather and the history of the local structures. Fast forward almost a full year, and now... needless to say that I was pretty bummed out when I did a spur of the moment, 3-hour drive to Mt. Laguna (Saturday, March 7, 2026) for a re-experience, only to find The Outpost closed due to a septic leak. I am sure hoping that they will have this all fixed up soon... especially with the Pacific Crest Trail hiker season having launched on March 1 (it runs through May 31). Since the people that run this place are awesome folks, I would hate as much for them to miss out on their potential income as I would be disappointed for the hikers who may fail to have the chance to have the excellent experience that I had in 2025. Best advice: Call ahead to ensure they're open. My fingers are crossed... Respectfully, I Remain, "Trail Chef" P.C.T. 2025

That level of customer service is hard to find and made the entire experience stress free. The portions were generous, the prices were very reasonable, and every dish was fresh and delicious. The owner's homemade dressing deserves a special mention because it is absolutely incredible and easily one of the best homemade dressings I've ever had. If you're looking for delicious food, outstanding service, and a local family owned business that truly cares about its customers, I highly recommend Janos Pizza. The meatballs and sauce are made in house, which is always a big plus in a meatball hero. The meatball hero was only $10.99 plus tax, well priced indeed. The meatball sandwich came nicely toasted from the oven, so the bread had that light exterior crisp and soft warm center. The meatballs had a very good texture and a good flavor. In hindsight, a little more seasoning would have been nice. The sauce was very good, not overly sweet or acidic. A good down the middle. I liked that they put a very good amount of provolone and parmesan cheese on the sandwich. It was one tasty meatball sandwich. The service was very friendly and welcoming. I liked when I inquired about the food, I was given a good run down of the place. There's plenty of parking. There's only one table inside and a few outside the building. The space itself has a decent amount of seating. I think we got lucky because it wasn't too crowded when we arrived, so we were able to grab seats with no problem which made the experience even better. Overall, the service was good and the food was full of flavor. I ordered the cheese ravioli and lasagna, plus an added meatball. I originally planned on getting the trio plate, but unfortunately they were out of the spaghetti and the meat ravioli. The cashier recommended the cheese ravioli and said it was a popular choice and she was 100% right. I'm actually glad I ended up ordering it. Since the spaghetti was sold out, I'll definitely have to make another trip back. Luckily, my nephew ordered some, so I got a taste... and wow, I would've loved having my own full plate. The lasagna was unbelievably good! Perfectly soft pasta layers, a generous amount of cheese, and a really flavorful meat sauce. Even the meatball stood out with great seasoning. The cheese ravioli had the perfect amount of filling, and the bread was solid too. I was stuffed by the time I finished my plate, but I still had to try a bite of the pizza. It was super cheesy and the sausage was bomb. The only downside was that it tasted a little burnt on the bottom. I'd probably just eat the top and leave the crust if I ordered it again. Overall, my experience was great, and this is definitely a spot I'd happily return to (especially for that spaghetti next time!).
