What a huge bakery! and I love it! The options are endless! Mini Zeppoles, Tiramisu, Bread pudding, Natas, Cannoli, Amaretti Cookies, Cupcakes, Cassata Cake, Donuts, Tart, Mousse...the list goes on and on. If you want to skip all the sweets, you can order cold and hot sandwiches. Mini Deli section of the shop has your standard meats. They also have a toaster in the back so please order your butter roll toasted here, it was delicious when I ate mine. Plenty of seats inside and outside. There is a pantry for the regular coffee lovers but if you like strong coffee like myself, order yourself a Galão. It's an Espresso with foamed milk. Pinho's, while far from perfect, is definitely one of the better bakeries I've discovered in this area. Not everything is good (their biscotti, for instance, are dry, flavorless things, and the "French Slices" are just plain bad), and not everything is fresh every time... it's luck of the draw here, unless you stick to the fast movers and tried-and-true. I wish they'd pare down their offerings and concentrate more on what they're really good at; it's quality, not quantity, after all. There's a deli here with a small menu of sandwiches and salads. I've never tried the savory side of Pinho's, but their breads are pretty good so I'd be willing to give it a shot. There's a cafe section off to the side where you can sit and eat, and a few outdoor tables as well. This place is usually hopping on the weekends, so expect a bit of a wait if you're going mid-morning on a Sunday. DON'T expect the friendliest of service; they really just want you in and out, and frequently look annoyed if you're unsure of what you want. Luckily, I usually know just what I want. Two of my favorite things here - and I never, ever thought I'd say this - are cupcakes. (Not that I hate cupcakes, or anything... but I never did understand the whole cupcake craze.) While I haven't enjoyed all of their cupcakes, the ones I do like, I REALLY like. A lot. And given that they're big enough to really be two cupcakes, I don't even mind spending $3.50 a pop on them. The best of the bunch: Brownie Cupcake (By far, the best cupcake here. The cake is a dense, fudgy, moist Devil's food cake studded with chocolate chunks, delicious on its own. It's filled and generously topped with a decadently rich fudge icing that's sweet, but not *too* sweet, and garnished with a chocolate drizzle and a sliver or two of brownie. Utter perfection, and has never let me down.) Carrot Cupcake (The carrot cake is great - also very moist, and studded with raisins, nuts, and perhaps bits of pineapple. It's generously topped with cream cheese icing that is just sweet enough, and garnished with chopped nuts and the ubiquitous buttercream carrot.) Honorable mention goes to the Dulce de Leite and Red Velvet cupcakes. Steer clear of the Oreo and Lemon cupcakes; both have this weird grainy, lumpy, gelatinous custard filling that's just not pleasant. Other things I really like here: Baby Cheesecakes (Dense and creamy, and cute as can be! They're pricey at around $5.00 each... but a nice addition to a holiday dessert tray. Skip the toppings, which are probably scooped from giant buckets that don't require refrigeration. Get the plain ones instead, and top with your own good quality jam and/or fresh fruits!) Cheesecake Slices (If you have no need for fancy, get these instead of the Baby Cheesecakes. It's the same great product, but in a flatter rectangular slice that costs under $2.00. Cha-ching!) Custard Cups (They really are quite good - better than most I've tried in this area, including Newark's Ironbound. The base is crunchy and flaky, the custard smooth and delicately sweet... and best of all, Pinho's custard cups don't coat your mouth with a scummy layer of shortening the way most of these things do. They're also priced right at under $6.00 for a half dozen. They could use a bit more custard, that's my only complaint.) I've sampled other things that were pretty good - coffee rings, cannolis, and a miniature Swedish pastry come to mind. Overall, I'd say the product here is of a decent quality. I really wanted to give this place more stars, but I just couldn't. I've been here a couple times and have different experiences which led me lower my rating. The first time I order cupcakes for Christmas. Luckily, I pre-ordered, so I woke up on Christmas and went in the shop and was out within 10 minutes with delicious cupcakes. They were so good to me I started telling my friends Pinho's was better than Crumbs! Unfortunately the next two times weren't as great. The next time I went to Pinho's I stood in line like a normal person and ordered a cupcake. I was so excited that I bit into the cupcake in the driver's seat of my car (I needed the strength to drive 20 minutes to get home). That cupcake was one of the driest and hardest things I'd eaten in a long time. I decided it was a fluke and went back a couple months later and ordered a slice of cake. I waited until I got home to eat it this time... but it was still dry and a little hard. My theory is if you pre-order anything they will bake things for you and make sure it's fresh. If you wait in line you are subject to get whatever dry monstrosity didn't sell the previous day. This problem can be solved by not having a 20 ft case filled with a ton of pasteries that don't sell. Any first-year business student could figure that out. Why hasn't Pinho's? I'll still most likely go back because when their desserts are fresh they're AMAZING, but I won't go back unless I've pre-ordered baked goods. read more

I can't believe I've lived in the area for over a year and just went to Pinhos for the first time today. I feel like I've been doing myself a huge injustice. I decided to go in because I was in the mood for a deli sandwich. I got a turkey and cheese sandwich on rye that literally had a half pound of turkey on it for- FOUR dollars! Pinho's is a great bakery and the owners are terrific!!! They support local community events, which is hard to find nowadays. They have an amazing selection of pastries and bread's to choose from. They have delicious fruit tart's! I love the tile they used for the walls...it really takes me back to Portugal when I step inside. The bakery also has a deli, which I never tried, but I have heard wonderful comments regarding there sandwich's. Service is usually pretty good. I avoid coming here during the weekends and on holiday's...They get so packed and the customers can be very rude! As much as I adore this bakery, I do not like their custard cups. I've always been a fan of Pinho's Bakery. Their cakes are beyond compare. But since the COVID pandemic, I am very disappointed in the lack of adherence to CDC guidelines. I went there about three weeks ago, and the manager and some of the clerks had their masks below their nose, despite the fact that droplets from the nose and/or mouth can linger in the air. That day I got a sandwich in the deli, made by a young woman who wore her mask correctly. Today I went back for a cupcake, hoping compliance would be better. The young woman who served me had her mask below her nose. I pointed it out, and she moved it up and in a second it was down again. The manager was on the floor chatting with a customer/friend with her mask below her nose ... and then below her chin covering nothing, while continuing to emit droplets into the air from the act of breathing and talking. We all do that without noticing it...HENCE THE MASK! One of the clerks handling food had her mask around her neck. I loudly asked why no one was wearing masks, and the manager quickly pushed hers up and told the girl behind the counter without the mask to put it on. Masks are not meant to be put on when caught and off when wanting to be comfortable. When working indoors, and especially when handling food, masks covering nose and mouth are ESSENTIAL. Want a break? Go outside for a few minutes and then return to work complying with your mask properly on. The food tastes good, but at what price? Going there right now is just too risky, and you couldn't pay me to go back. read more

Beinstein's Jewish Bakery in Linden closed about 18 months ago and I was bereft. Inconsolable. I cried a little. Convinced I'd never find another bakery that did justice to rugelach, I focused on baking at home. And when I first heard of Pinho's I scoffed. I'd driven past the place many times and for some reason thought it was just a deli. Office guys in shirtsleeves were always munching on sandwiches at the picnic tables out front when I drove past. It's so much more, and the bustling nature of the establishment is reminiscent of the constant stream of patrons waiting in line at the now-shuttered Beinstein's. Finally, last year I ventured to Pinho's and was pleasantly surprised. They are famous for their custard cups (pasteles de natas), which run about $10 for a dozen. When I stopped in Superbowl Sunday they were still warm, which was a nice surprise. Their chocolate mousse cake is rich and fluffy. I had a Bavarian cream doughnut there a couple weeks ago that was the best I've ever had, with abundant pudding and rich dark chocolate. There is a wide assortment of petit fours, pies and coffee cakes, but I haven't tried them yet because I keep ordering the custard cups. And damn if they didn't go ahead and improve upon the rugelach. It's utterly delectable. I've never had any of their deli selections or sandwiches, but the lunch area seems to be nearly as busy and popular as the bakery section of the restaurant. Which brings me to an awkward aspect of the place -- the waiting/ordering line is a bit of a free-for-all with a lot of confusion about who is "next." It's always busy and everyone crowds around the glass case to inspect the goodies, which is super fun, for sure, but it also makes for lots of people bumping into each other. The counter is always amply staffed with young workers constantly asking "Next?" which leads to forced customer-on-customer interaction wherein you and the strangers nearest you start checking with each other to ensure no one's line-hopping or being inconsiderate. You kind of have to hang back while a staffer fills your order and rings you up, then you jostle your way to the register to hand over cash and get change. Parking is a little inconvenient if you don't get one of the 5 or 6 spots lined up on the right side of the building. Be careful crossing the street if you have to park on the other side of Chestnut and use the crosswalks since it's a heavily police-patrolled and very busy street. It's closed on Mondays. read more

While waiting for my car to be detailed at nearby Wohlrab Detailing (another excellent establishment), I decided to do the the 25 minute walk on a sweltering May afternoon to Pinho's Bakery. I figured I'd earn my calories. I had been itching to get over to Pinho's to try their macaroni salad, which was touted as "the best in the garden state" by a user on trip advisor. Upon approaching this bakery/deli, I was instantly impressed with the well-appointed and beautiful exterior. The place looked legit. Upon entering, I was met with a bright, clean. spacious interior. I noticed the two lines- one for sweet toothers (bakery) and another for savory lovers (deli). I walked over to the deli to secure my macaroni salad. I stood there for about 2-3 minutes as an older man behind the counter, dressed in plain clothes, yapped away with an employee. Another employee, I believe her name is Dijah?, greeted me with a warm smile and asked of she could help. I thanked her for a acknowledging my presence and complained out loud about this man's discourteous lack of customer service. The genius proceeded to try to argue that I didnt greet him first and I quickly interrupted him and refocused my attention on the nice employee and my macaroni salad. After ordering the salad, I went over to the bakery, where the service was like night and day in comparison. Every employee there was super nice. friendly, and helpful. The person who helped me, Maya, is the sweetest, funniest, most helpful employee you can dream up. She was knowledgeable, a great sales person (I ordered more of the custard tarts than I planned because of her sales skills), and all around great energy. So, all that aside, the food review: Chocolate moussecake: A..I devoured it in the store. Custard tart- B..could be an A if warmed up, which they don't do. Boston cream donut: A++..holy molly Macaroni salad: solid A, did not change my life, but was decent. Next time, I'll order it with a little tuna salad mixed in. Lastly, and boy was I glad I got this: Their coldcuts...A++++...great meats and bread and excellent application and ratio of condiments and veggies. Add some yellow mustard to the Turkey sandwich and childhood sub nostalgia will set in. Also, Julia, the owner, is such an attentive, smart business person...she gets it!..customer service plus "just give em the pickle" attitude. She was able to quickly troubleshoot a billing error later over phone without throwing her valued employee under the bus. Impressive. I can't say anything bad about this place. Its the best bakery out there! My daughter wanted a koala cake. Her theme was koala bear birthday party. I drove 20 mins from my house to see if they could make me the cake I was looking for. I showed the girl at the counter what cake I wanted, and a few days later..I got exactly what I wanted at a really good price. Cake looked and tasted fresh, a really good. Pinho's Bakery is one of my all time faves. Every time I visit NJ I make sure I stop in. It's not the biggest bakery I've been in (Porto's Bakery, Glendale, CA) but what it lacks in size, it makes up for it in variety and taste. My favorites are the cakes; however, the donuts, especially the pretzel donuts are also delicious. Due to the popularity of Pinho's it can get really busy in there pretty fast. With that being said the service remains prompt and orders are organized. I can't wait to get back to NJ so I can visit one of my favorite places. read more

I used to come to this facility to order all my cakes and cupcakes. It's been a while and as time went on the customer service did as well! I made an order for pickup and when I went to get it the design was horrible! The order was already paid for so I couldn't even walk out without paying. I told them I wasn't satisfied with the design and they took the cake back.... only to return 30 seconds later with some gold glitter thrown on top of it. The owner came over and said why would I want something else? She likes it and anything else with my color scheme would look like a frightening Halloween cake. She sarcastically threw up her hands and said sorry you're unhappy as she walked away. For the price, this place is awesome. My friend and I had two sandwiches, two pastry/desserts, and she had a cup of coffee for 12 dollars. You really can't go wrong. The food was good too--I had an egg salad sandwich with tomatoes, lettuce, and munster cheese on a whole-wheat roll and my friend had a ham sandwich with provolone. Pretty standard, but we weren't disappointed at 3 bucks a pop. We also had a chocolate cigar and a chocolate dipped cannoli. The cannoli cream was a little too sugary for my liking, but my friend loved it. The chocolate cigar was flaky and flavorful--the walnuts and brown sugar melted in my mouth. Nom nom nom. It was packed in there and I can see why. I didn't get the "Jersey attitude" everyone is complaining about in the other reviews; the girl that helped us was really sweet, especially for all the questions we asked. There love ,And dedication to their business shows in their product.. this establishment doesn't need my praise the line is always out the door. That always tells you something.
