For our first-born daughter's 7th birthday, I decided to seek a local baker with COVID-19 well in swing. Leah of Pink Apron Cakes was quick to call me back after I had left her a voicemail. She's incredibly nice and easy to work with. Because we didn't anticipate a large gathering, I went with an 8" 2-layer of their most popular flavor, "triple chocolate salted caramel cake" ($40). I sent her a photo of the pink cat decorations that I picked out so she could add an edible image ($12). The edible image was a bit weird to eat. It was just one of those things that we all just scraped it off because the rest of the cake was amazingly soft and delicious. For pick-ups, just call her and she'll bring your sweet treat to your door with face mask on. I called her about a week and a half before I needed it, but I suggest giving her at least two weeks notice in case she gets busy. PayPal is the preferred touchless payment method. So I was looking for cakes all over Arcadia, Pasadena, LA... even as far as Rancho and OC but to be honest, I didn't want to drive way too far while harboring a cake in my car. At the very last minute, I found this place amongst a million other bakeries but was in awe of all of the pictures posted here on Yelp. Plus, I wanted to try a new place besides all of the other usual and more popular shops around my area. I managed to call Leah on her day off (sorry!) and asked if she could make a birthday cake at the very last minute and I'm so glad she was able to help me with my request. I ordered the triple chocolate salted caramel cake and it tastes just as good as it looks! The cake wasn't dry, had the right amount of sweetness to someone who loves sugar as much as I do but not overpowering to those who don't have as much of a sweet tooth like the birthday boy; the cake truly had the right balance and it was nicely decorated for one of the more "simple" cakes she makes. Incredible, unique new bakery here in Monterey Park. They had a nice grand opening event recently and I had a chance to sample several different kinds of cupcakes. As a self-appointed cupcake connoisseur, I must say that these cupcakes are in a word, "bitchin'"! They were super moist, but not heavy, perfect consistency really. They also seemed to have achieved the golden ratio of frosting to cake. Also, these aren't just any generic flavored cupcakes. The baker seems to be a blend of culinary-artisan/mad-scientist. With flavors like "Cherry Coke" and "Irish Car Bomb" [Note: You absolutely must try the car bomb .I swear on the grave of my father Domingo Montoya, you will be blown away]. These cupcakes are like a musical concert to the palette, if that concert featured Andrea Bocelli, Louis Armstrong, and Led Zeppelin all at the same time. I told Leah that I wanted a classic Pooh theme, not new Pooh, the original Pooh, for my daughter's baby shower and she went above and beyond to create an amazing display!Complete with take home party cookies, cake pops and mini cupcakes! My wife indicated that she wanted a semi-naked cake with decorations that matched our wedding colors. Though my wife was not very specific, we got everything we wished for and more. Our wedding cake was truly a work of art. Furthermore, she can make egg-less and vegan cakes. Leah made us both a cake with eggs and an egg-less cake, so we got to try both. Now, I am not cake person, but Leah made such a delicious egg-less cake that it is making me reconsider. For several years I've searched high and low for someone who can bake me a KEYLIME CAKE and NOT a pie nor cupcakes.
