Just to clear up any confusion: Pint is a gay men's bar. Obviously, you can go there if you are not a gay man - I just had some friends come from another town and want to go there based on Yelp reviews not realizing it's a gay bar. We wound up flooding the place with our pack of 18 straight people and I felt like the 7 or so gay men who were the only ones there when we got there were not happy with us for ruining their Saturday night vibe. So, I would not personally call the place "gay friendly" so much as call the crowd there (not the staff though) - "hetero-sexual people un-friendly". In terms of being a bar, if it were not a gay bar and I were not a straight woman, it would be a place I would want to go because they have that whole menu of fruity drinks that come in fishbowl sizes. I am not into craft beers, but definitely into anything resembling a rum punch bucket. Also, when you are a woman going to a gay men's bar, be warned. The bathrooms will be lacking or non-existent for women. For example, at Pint the bathrooms are labeled "Sit" or "Stand". Meaning men can go into the "Sit" bathroom, which means that the "sit" bathroom is always going to smell like fresh poo. read more

I was a little sad when I saw that the old "El Negro" bar had flipped, as it sort of marked the changing of the neighborhood, but I have to admit that the cocktails served up by the the Star Bar waiters are more to my taste than warm bottles of Presidente served up in the super-smoky atmosphere that seemed to be the norm the few times I went in (El Negro's days were probably numbered once the Jersey-wide smoking ban went into effect). Star Bar has very pleasant lighting (readers of my other reviews will note that this is something of an obsession with me) and frequently has tasty bar snacks: once I was given a bowl of lemongrass chili roasted peanuts. I was also told that they have a policy of letting patrons with handy iPods be the dj for half an hour. This is a nice neighborhoody touch. The vibe is very relaxed and I've seen all types of people there. It's definitely gay-friendly, but really, shouldn't every place be? I welcome this addition to the hood and only wish they would get a tap as now it's strictly what comes out of a bottle, kids. I can always hope. read more

there are few places i'd rather be on a sunday evening (or any evening for that matter) than at star bar - it's a great combination of fantastic american craft beers, friendly bartenders, and fresh popcorn. it's a pretty small space and rather dimly lit, so expect to get cozy with your fellow patrons, but it never gets obnoxiously crowded. all in all, it's a great place to meet up with your friends to explore some interesting craft beers. read more

I have been to Pint a few times now, and each time has been a fun experience. The bar itself is small (in a good way- it's just the right size), intimate, and well-organized. What appealed to me most was definitely the variety of craft beer they have. The bartender was also knowledgeable. They ran out of two of the beers I asked for so I asked him to make a recommendation. Based on what I wanted, he told me to try Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat because it tastes like Fruity Pebbles. Not only was I impressed that he knew the kind of beer I would like, but also with the fact that they had such a cool and unique beer. I also went during the 3-2-1 special on Sunday ($3 bottled craft beer, $2 wells and $1 shots)- you can't find a better deal anywhere else. The only thing I didn't really like was that both times the place was pretty empty when I was there. But because of the cool atmosphere, great selection, and good deals, I'll definitely be back. read more

Just moved to Jersey City and have stopped in a few times (nice to have a local hangout) and have been very disappointed. Do not expect any type of intellectual stimulating conversations. The crowd is very click-ish (and no clicks you want to be a part of). The bartenders have been very pleasant... Too bad for the crowd... read more

ok, i have been here twice, im new to jersey city, and I grew up in Jersey but only been to Jersey city once before and that was when I was about 11 or 12, my has it changed. Anyway I heard about starbar, and decided to go with a friend. I got there and realized how small it was, like it was sunday, and the bar must have had about 10-15 ppl and it felt really cramped. Then I realized that the crowd was much older than my friend and I , i guess they cater to a MUCH older crowd or I was just there on the wrong night. Huge selection of beer, the bartender was so nice, which is a rarity. Than I went again on another night, and the owner was there serving, and He was so nice and sweet, gave us free popcorn and explained to us the drink specials and his recommendations. Again, old crowd, and there was five people including me and a friend, it was so tight still, the space is tiny, i could hear everyones convo, word for word. I guess this place is cool to go to for a drink before heading out for a REAL good time, but def not for a date, or looking to a have a deep convo with anyone because everyone will hear what your saying. read more
