It has been 17 years since my last review of the Living Room Bar, and I am not sure that I have even been there since. However, they recently revamped the space, updating the decor to ensure that the W Hotel remains at the forefront of modernity. The small, linear bar was moved from one side of the room into the center and was now a larger, semi-circle to make it easier to converse with neighboring imbibers. The space maintained its lounge feel, with couches and comfortable chairs scattered around the bar. A main change was that, instead of the Living Room being visible to anyone that walked into the hotel lobby, it was now hidden behind a translucent wall of lights, only visible to those that entered. That change enabled the bar to be more exclusive, or "discreet", as we heard someone mention at the bar, haha. The place was reasonably crowded on the Friday evening, and we grabbed seats at the bar in order to be more social. To that end, we had some interesting conversations with both locals and hotel guest. Also, our bartender, Jose, was excellent! He was engaging to speak with and also crafted fantastic cocktails. The Espresso Martini he made for me had a very robust coffee flavor and just the perfect hint of sweetness; it was definitely up there on my list of top espresso cocktails. The bar had a list of really creative and unique drinks, and I had initially wanted to try the Kyoto Bridge with Haku vodka, sake, ceremonial matcha, and yuzu, but Jose had told me that he did not have the necessary sake for it. However, he assembled my martini with such perfection that I did not mind having a more basic drink on that visit; I could always go back to try the Kyoto Bridge and certainly will after such an enjoyable experience! read more

A few friends and I wanted to grab a couple of drinks but we weren't feeling the Hoboken bar scene, per say. We opted to hit up The Living Room for a few mojitos and some conversation. I rarely complain about the costs related to imbibing in the North NJ/NY area because let's face it, it's going to cost you. We're not in Kentucky. You're paying for a lot more than your libation...you're paying for the atmosphere. If you're not interested in shelling out $14 for a cocktail, then that is a-okay. There are certainly about 150 other bars/restaurants in the nearby vicinity in Hoboken that will suit your fancy. The people-watching at The Living Room is remarkable. The lounge is positioned right near the hotel entrance, therefore, you get to see everyone coming and going. My friend is the connoisseur of people-watching...she loves it more than life itself. She was in her glory. Her love might have been the people-watching but my love was with the furry pillows that are strewn about. They would look lovely in my condo! The crowd was pretty mixed (age, style, etc.) and that is just the way I like it. We left pretty late, however, the W gift shop was still open (score!). My friend bought me a gangster rap coloring book (don't ask). It was hilarious and it's my favorite hotel souvenir to date. If you're looking for a change of pace in the Hoboken area, then the Living Room is a good place to try. read more

As a guest of the W Hoboken, I had a great experience overall, but stopping at the Living Room Bar was the low point of our stay. After a football game at the Meadowlands, we came back and wanted a light bite before heading upstairs. We were dressed too casually for the restaurant, so we thought eating at the Living Room would be a great solution. There were a few people enjoying cocktails and bites, but it wasn't crowded at all, even though it was a Saturday night. First of all, we were ignored for quite a while. The bartender and the cocktail waitress walked by several times before acknowledging us. We finally ordered. I asked for a large bottle of Pellegrino (my friend is expecting, so cocktails were not in order) and they couldn't accomodate us. Two club sodas were $5 each!!! and were basically 70% ice. My friend ordered one of the flatbreads (it was meh) and I got the fish tacos (which were OK--the pineapple salsa was a nice twist, but these aren't California fish tacos). The service is what really sunk this experience. No one came back to check on us and see if everything was OK. And no one came back, basically ever. After waiting for about 20 minutes after we were done eating, the bartender came out from behind the bar and was bussing some empty tables. I asked him for the check. He said he'd get our waitress. We waited. And waited. And waited. After another 10 or 15 minutes of nothing, I went up to the bar and he said, "she'll be right over." It took another 10 minutes. What should have been a quick bite in the bar was a long time. We probably could have changed clothes, eaten at the nicer restaurant and still have been done faster. AVOID this place! read more

This is no casual hangout. You want a lounge, you get a lounge! My wife and I went for a nice night out. Naturally that means sipping wine in a nice lounge while eating....pizza! The mozzarella pizza cost $11. It was not bad, had a pit of black on the edge of the crust. Our wine of choice was a Hob Nob pinot noir, which was a little sweet for my tastes but still drinkable. You can just walk in and grab a seat. Tables range from traditional seating to large lounge chairs with shared space. It looked like there was one waitress at the time and she was really nice. The Living Room makes for a more laidback lounge experience which worked just right for me. read more

Couches and a true lounge, this is a nice, classy kind of place to grab a drink and relax, chat, and enjoy some time with friends without it being too crazy in noise or crowd. Definitely overpriced, but people come here to be seen in Hoboken. This is in the lower level lobby area of the Hotel. While I've been to better bars and more fun, this isn't bad to hang out a bit here. read more

POOF! I just teleported to Miami as soon as I walked in throught the doors. The glamour, the glitz, the contemporary layout, the hot staff, the beautiful people is what the Living Room at the W Hotel was like. The drinks were strong, the bartender was friendly, the crowd was sophisticated...is this really New Jersey? The drink prices were lower than Manhattan and our bartender made a mean dirty martini that she kept refilling with a warm smile. Finally a ritzy venue is available in Hoboken aside from the bars and dives. Only one co-worker left, my trooper reputation flourishes once again, so we wandered around the chic hotel and somehow stumbled upon an even nicer bar upstairs! The music was hip and cheery, she orders another Apple Martini, im buzzing like Cheech Marin in Mexico City and responsibility kicked in...."umm, we have to work tomorrow". So we called it a night, it was a fun time indeed, I will definitely be returning for happy hour after a long day at work. read more

Best lounge in Hoboken, I had a fabulous experience here. We came here because we wanted a spot we could enjoy a nice drink and not have to suffer through the pub-scene or the overcrowded clubs that most other places in Hoboken offer. Dominique was our server and she was able to recommend us some of her favorite drinks off their menu. Service was efficient, everyone was very friendly, and we loved her drink recommendations. Didn't try any of the food so I can't comment on that, but I'll definitely be back! Loved everything read more

I anxiously awaited the W's opening but when it kept getting postponed, I forgot about. I stumbled upon it about 2 weeks after its grand opening and was not overly dressed for what I thought would be the swankiness of this establishment. Surprisingly, my jeans, boots and sweater were suffice for the Living Room. The scene was great - it was like you were in NYC without having to cross the river. I thought the prices would reflect those of the city, but they ranged from $10 - $16 or so which to me was ok, given that you were paying for the experience and atmosphere. The background music sounded like the same CD on repeat. Comfy couches and lounge chairs complimented the experienced. What went downhill for me and my party was the service and the drinks. They weren't that good and for your opening weeks and at a "reputable" establishment, we expected much more. My husband ordered a mango mojito, which was delicious. When he ordered his second, it came with no mango, no mint, it looked like a vodka and soda or something. The cocktail waitress, who was kind, said they switched bartenders, but regardless, even if they make drinks differently, mojitos have mint leaves in them! They came back with something that pitiful and we shouldn't have been charged for the drink or the amount of time it took to get the drinks. I ordered a margarita and they ran out of an ingredient which caused an even longer wait. I was torn between giving the Living Room 2 or 3 stars, but I gave it 2 because a place like this, in its first few weeks, should be impeccable and it wasn't. I was not impressed. We went on a rainy Sunday afternoon, so I didn't expect many people, but to my surprise, there was no one there. We had the whole place to ourselves. WOW! It was a good time because we got to sit comfortably and talk to each other without any problems. The place was comfy with many couches and lounges. Some with small backs and others with large backs. Pillows everywhere. The drinks were a bit pricey but who cares. We had quality time in a quite yet chic place with a drink, it's that what life is all about. My friend liked the place because it was very classy and "fancy pants" type of place. read more

If you don't want to go to the city and still want to have a classier night in NJ (which is tough) this place will be a nice place to take a look at. I can say that the prices are city prices. However, the crowd is hot and friendly. Upstairs is The Chandelier Room. They have an outside bar at this bar, like a terrace and they allow you to smoke there too. I personally don't smoke but that may be a plus for smokers since everybody does not want to go out to smoke and deal with the hustle coming back in. In The Chandelier Room, the music was OK. They need a good DJ here I think. Overall, Hoboken needed a better place like this and I will definitely go back again. read more

In a word -- classy. Come here to lounge, cuddle up with your beau on one of the small couches and have an expensive drink. The drinks are good but clearly overpriced. If you go directly to the bar, you won't have the automatic gratuity charged to your bill. The total vibe here is to see and be seen. Some woman came in with sneakers... t a c k y. We were on a mission to find the Chandelier Room. We failed, and settled for the Living Room instead (Chandelier Room possibly for guests only?). It was a Thursday night, so pretty mellow, but you could still feel that it had a great atmosphere. Music in the background, but low enough to hold a good conversation. A very nice bartender who was wearing boots that made it very odd looking, but she was usually behind the bar, except to bring around drinks, so it doesn't matter much. The drinks were very NYC prices, around 15 each. We got some pineapple concoction and another coconut concoction. The pineapple drink was very pineappe-ly-- it almost tasted solely of pineapple juice from a can of pineapple chunks. We were misled into thinking that the coconut drink would taste like coconut. It was more of an exotic fruit medley (i.e. lychee, etc.). They were on par with our expectations. though. The W also added gratuity themselves which always annoys me (20%). Nonetheless, it's a very nice lounge and worth a swing by. read more

Dear W Hotel, What a major FAIL!? I think you can tell my the recent reviews how horrible this place really is. I purchased a Gilt City deal and decided to check it out, neverever again will I goto this place. 1. Service gets "0" stars. It took them more than 15 minutes then i finally broke to ask for a menu at the bar. Bartender told me someone will be with us shortly, and there goes another 15 minutes. After we finally get our menu, it took another 15 minutes to order, another 15 minutes to get our drinks... yes, we spent about 1 hour to get our drinks. Our waitress said she'll bring our napkins... nope, never did. 2. Food gets 2 stars. Crappy thin crust pizza, decent meatball sliders. Should you ever pay $12? I think not. Not enough flavor, served cold... too many things they did wrong with this. 3. Decor gets 3 stars. It's a W hotel so they do a good job. I give them 3 because the view you get is to the parking lot.... not the city. AVOID this place. read more

Seriously, if you're coming here for drinks you know what you're getting into. And if you're reading this you really know what you're getting into and have no excuse when you see an exorbitant bill for lackluster drinks. The pillows look fantastic but are really uncomfortable to sit against. They're immitation (or real??) animal fur and it's scratchy as all get-out. The clientele is hit or miss on being attractive. Some are just overweight tourists keeping to themselves and most are couples on dates. So going here thinking you're going to flirt with some good looking guy prolly isnt the best idea. Even the bartender and staff aren't all that great looking as they usually are in the classier W locations. A bit of a breakdown: -expensive drinks -great lounging area for couples without obnoxious music being played too loud (the Chandelier Room has the loud music just down the street) -valet parking is a nightmare if you're not a hotel guest (and still a nightmare if you are a guest! the valet guys suck!) for a hotel: stay here. for a bar/lounge: go across the Hudson read more

2-stars for (Hotels~Motels~Holiday innnnn..). Anyways its very posh and nice place to meetup with friends before the night begins. This so called "Living Room" is really just a nice way of saying the new W hotels lobby area. The ceiling lites and shinny wall fixtures reminds me of Ikea, and the the bar area is tiny. Beers are $9 and mixed drinks are $13 (Not sure if they have shots). I almost gave 3 stars for the waiting staff, couple nice tattoo w/ heels and red dress asking what would you like to drink is a plus. read more

Went here last night, admittedly a little early (around 10 pm). Got in with no cover, and walked around with the gf. Truly, the decor is very different from what you would expect in Hoboken (save for Teak). Fairly easy to get a spot on a couch at this time, and easy to just sit around and chat with a group. Drinks are expensive for Hoboken (to be expected), but on par and slightly under NYC prices ($8 bottle beers, $12 min mixed drinks). While you're on the couches, waitresses come over and ask you if you want drinks, which was helpful to avoid the bar. However, once the bar started getting more crowded (11-1130pm), they were nowhere to be found. This was kind of annoying since I just wanted to close my tab and they had my card. Also, they add a 20% service charge to your bill if you order through a waitress. Kind of annoying because I didn't notice it until after I paid. $26 for a beer and a martini is a little steep for my taste. I appreciate what they're trying to do at the W. It's definitely something new and fresh in Hoboken. However, from reading some of the comments about this place, it seems that it - like its clientele - is largely pretentious. The drink was underwhelming (and the beer was.. uh, a beer); the people were dressed no differently than you'd expect (guys in jeans and collared shirts, girls in dresses or jeans); the bartenders were average looking for other bars in the area. It's basically the type of spot you like going to if you like to brag about how chic and classy you are. *barf* I did venture upstairs to the chandelier room but didn't stick around too long. I might give this place a shot in the future to see how the vibe gets late night. Thursday night it's empty but they play more hip-hop so OK. Small crowd that is there is mostly on the out door patio. But come on - seriously we're still in NJ just because we're staring @ Manhattan - when did Chandelier start charging $15 a drink? I'm so confused! Horrible experience, I figured it would be a nice place once it's in the W Hotel in Hoboken but I was there on a Thursday afternoon , the place wasn't even busy and it took the bartender 20 minutes to serve me because she was busy chatting with a coworker, not to mention their drink menu is very poor and when I asked her to make me a cosmo she looked at me like I was asking for the impossible. That drink was pure vodka and good coloring, it tasted like crap . Surely don't recommend or have any intentions of going back. read more

Well this makes travelling from SF to Nutley NJ for work MUCH better! New facility, great modern space (W all the way), rooms are gorgeous, natch, and totaly stocked. I got in late and needed a cocktail. Voila! Decent bottle of white in the fridge and room service pronto. Wifi took 5 minutes to set up and I was working before dinner arrived. The neighborhood is really cute if you walk a couple of blocks and the City view from the rooms is to die for. The only downer is no coffee in the rooms, and I'm not paying $5 delivery for a $4 pot of coffee (tasty as it may be!). I also hear parking is expensive. Makes business travel so much more palatable. I went to the Living for the opening and then two other times to see if it was the same. At the opening it was really awesome and packed and the waitresses are smokin hot - I feel in love 2-3 times. That also made me forget that the drinks are $10 minimum. Every other time it was nothing special, it seemed more like a more mature crowd but something I would visit in the city. Had their special pineapple martini just cause and I thought it was quite tasty and definitely helped the "me getting more drunk" cause. This place is best if you pregame real hard and then go here to hang. Say have 1 or 2 drinks before you go to your final destination - staying her all night can get boring. There is also a euro-techno CD that plays non stop (even in the afternoons). It's fun for the experience and if you have a good gro7up - if you are looking to party in the same type of environment go upstairs to the Chandler room - its like Teak on steroids and muscle milk. read more

it's hilarious. why? you have tourists from who-knows-where just innocently lurking around for free wi-fi, which isn't available in their lavish fantastic rooms-- just in the lounge. said tourists mixed in with people who long to be or are already posh with collared shirts and sequins sipping well-prepared and highly priced cocktails. the hodgepodge is outright funny. the overall design is sleek, modern, and large-scale. the terrace views of the river and the skyline outside are breathtaking and expect to be surrounded by a crowd that is privileged, peculiar, and amusingly pretentious. read more

We came here on a Thursday night towards the end of the night after lounge hopping all night and I enjoyed this place. The energy of this place was amazing. Everyone was so turned up and although I was tired, this place brought out the last energy I had left. The people here sure do know how to have a great time! My friend talked me into weathering the hazy, green storm that is Hoboken St. Patty's Day. Mistake. Cover charges are at a ridiculous premium. Clusters of green line up the block to squeeze into backed drinking establishments. It's chaotic. Fortunately, after laughing at some bar's $30 cover charge, we walked a couple blocks down the street to the W and found the Living Room - a classy, quiet, low key lounge free of cover charges with a great happy hour special. $5 mixed drinks from 3pm to 7pm, Sunday-Saturday. (Unless I'm reading calendars wrong, I'm pretty sure that's everyday. So, I don't know why their sign didn't just say "everyday".... No matter.) Quality drinks, plenty of seating, chill atmosphere. I'm not a frequenter of Hoboken, but I'd come back to the Living Room. read more

When you go to a bar in a W Hotel, you usually know what you're getting into. I expect to pay more for drinks, and I'm okay with that. What annoyed my about Living Room is that they added an 20% gratuity to my $45 bar bill and DID NOT point it out to me. I did not order drinks from a server, they came straight from the bartenders.I know people who work in the service industry, and I'm all for leaving a healthy tip - and recognizing extraordinary service. However, I don't see the justification in tipping a bartender 20% unless they are hooking you up. At Living Room, they treated me like I was inconveniencing them. Adding a mandatory tip to an individual bar bill is devious and shows poor customer service. read more

This is the ONLY place in Hoboken where you can actually grab a seat on the weekend and have a conversation. There is nothing special about this place. Drinks are average, wine is average. The decor is a little better but that's about it. No need to spend your hard earned money here. read more

I am a native Jersey girl ( but have lived in a lot of other states) but now back... The W is just what Hoboken needs. You walk in and it has a Miami feel... you do not feel like you are in Hoboken! It is a very cool vibe... door people can be a bit snooty but ladies, dress to impress ( and if your group is cute) you are in ! Love the W ! read more

Had some friends meet me here for birthday drinks last night. The staff was very accomodating of a larger party, the music was good, and the atmosphere was exactly what I wanted: cool, calm and conducive to having conversations, as opposed to screaming over each other to chat. Service was abysmal; it almost seemed like since we weren't dressed appropriately (friend and I were wearing sports gear since we had just come from a college football game) we got passed over several time for our intial drink order. Once food was delivered, server never came over to see how our entrees were. Check took a full 20 mins from the time we requested to the time it was delivered (we had to flag down a busboy to get our server). The place wasn't packed; there were several empty tables so it's hard to figure out why everything took so long. Food was ok...your standard overpriced W lobby food that tastes decent. In a pinch,when it's late and you are staying @ the W it's a viable option to room service (if you are willing to risk the slooow service). read more

I watched the W hotel go up and was excited about the new bliss spa and the new bar, the chandelier room. My girlfriends and I got all dressed up for my birthday and headed out. We waited patiently in line for 30 min. (8 pretty girls all glammed up, waiting in line) when the bouncer offered us bottle service, we declined. I hate mixing my own drinks. Then as we got to the front of the line, we were told (by the short bouncer) we had to spend a minimum of $300 on a bar tab, they would charge a credit card now, or we wouldnt be let in. We were furious at this point and were walking away, when they called us back and let us in. After all that, we get up there, and the bar is empty! Bar was filled with old guys and tan/gelled/fizzy hair girls. My friend that was meeting us, was forced to wait in line by herself for 30 min even after we went down and tried to say she was with us. The bar was SUCH a let down. Dont even waste your time!!! With all the other fun and not pretentious bars in Hoboken with city views, theres no reason to have to go here! read more

I am still currently at the Living Room as I write this review. The only reason I haven't walked out is because I am using a gift certificate I received for Christmas. Note to self: never give a restaurant gift certificate as a gift. First, I called as per the gift certificate instruction to make a reservation. I was transferred to an answering machine, which turned out to be for hotel reservations. I did receive a call back with the restaurant phone #. I called, made a reservation referencing the gift certificate #, as per instructions. We arrived and were seated, we gave the certificate to our server, as per instruction, and were informed, rather curtly, we were in the wrong place, Zylo. We were supposed to be at the Living Room...Finally in the right place we order a bottle of wine and sit down. Twenty minutes later, the bartender brings us an open bottle of the wine we ordered. I can't prove it, but it tastes like it's been open for a day, at least. Forty minutes in, we are still waiting on our food. I have worked as a bartender and a server in many establishments, including 4-star hotels. I don't see my experience getting better from here. Don't waste your time or money on this place. read more

First time at the Living Room at the W in Hoboken last night. Went with my husband for a change from the usual Hoboken/Jersey City bar scene. The place is absolutely stunning - as expected from a W Hotel. We had a couple of cocktails each (me: Grey Goose dirty martini, him: Stoli Redbull)...The bill? $68?!? Are you freaking kidding me? $16 per cocktail...umm newsflash... NYC is across the Hudson and if we wanted to dole out the cash like ballers on a Tuesday night we would have hopped on the Path train! The sad part.... worst Martini pour ever! My martini glass was barely over half full both times. On a typical day, I would have brought the drink back to the bar and tell them that the pour was unacceptable...but I was having a good day and I didn't feel like the drama. Such a disappointment :( Oh and beware... in tiny little letters, the drink menu tells you that they add a 20% gratuity "for your convenience" to every bill. I looked out for it on the receipt, but the cocktail waitress did not add the tip. Just be careful that they don't take advantage of that because I have an inkling that they won't tell you a tip has been added! The only pluses of the night... great decor, and the blue cheese stuffed olives in my teeny tiny drink were fabulous. read more
