Went here with my brothers for some down time. We were so disappointed that we decided to leave after one drink each. It was a quiet night, maybe 10 patrons plus us three for game night, which is something I love. I prefer hole in the wall pubs/bars as I feel more relaxed. The problem came from when we ordered our drinks. Two of us got Stella and the third got some top shelf and whiskey. All of our drinks tasted awful. I've been drinking Stella for many years and have even tasted it skunked by accident. The beers tasted nothing like st Lola after confirming with my brother. My other brother's whiskey tasted like a well liquor, not top shelf like he ordered. We finished our drinks and then walked to the next bar to finish off our night. I've lived in three apartments since moving to Jersey City and all of them have been within about 3-4 blocks from Abbey's, the local dive-y (formerly hookah) bar. Do not expect much atmosphere. It's a dark, fairly grimy looking hole with a few TVs, a killer jukebox, and a small pool table in back. Up until very recently, it was also arguably the only hookah bar downtown...though I hear they've put an end to that. Drinks are cheap, with a draft of domestic (and their not-bad house brew) running about $5. The bartenders are pleasant and you're sure to catch some interesting conversations from the regulars. Getting through an hour indoors was a challenge, though: hookah and cigarette smoke filled the bar and made breathing a task. The sidewalk seating was an ideal place to grab a drink, have a smoke, and pass the time. Most of my experience with Abbeys has been their takeout. They have your standard bar food (plenty of fried goods, burgers, bar pies) along with a grill. My go-to for a cheap dinner is usually their BBQ half-chicken with fries and a salad. The salad is typically limp and lettuce heavy (although the Abbey's salad, adding roasted red peppers, grape leaves, and feta is a vast improvement), though the fries are nice and crisp. The chicken is hit-or-miss: I've had succulent, well seasoned chicken with just enough char and I've had a brick of salted carbon on the bone. It's not the best bar or the best grill in the neighbourhood, but it's a standard for me. read more

I have been on the search for a pool table for so long and voila, it has been in my back yard this whole time.**Warning, this place is a hookah place and therefore people do smoke inside, and it is smokey as hell so, if you are sensitive to smoke, this place is probably not the best place for you. But, if you forgo the surgeon general's warning - this bar is super cool. I think you have to hooka outside now, and no one smoked inside during my last visit. - they have a pool table. - it's a good space if you're with a large group. - awesome dogs playing pool and smoking hooka mural in the main room. #classy Cons: - not much love from bartenders or patrons unless you are a regular. -$16 for a double whiskey neat? Prices on drafts and well drinks are okay, but you have to ask how much something is before you order or you could end up with an unexpected surprise when you cash out. - bartender over charged someone in my group by $2 and when it was brought to her attention instead of just correcting and reprinting the bill she implied my friend was being cheap. I went back this past week for Beef Ribs but that's Out the menu. Disappointed... Best Beef Ribs in Jersey City. They have new chairs, way to go. Sadly, the Steak sandwich was Greasy. I'm guessing its a great place if you are not Black; but expect horrible customer service, unfair treatment and hidden costs if you happen to be one of the browner people in the room. Maybe I'm being 'sensitive' but this is what happened: I was given a hookah menu that stated the cost as $15. The tiny woman behind the bar took my order and asked if I had a card. I gave her my card and waited ever so patiently for her to return it but I actually had to request the return. Woman: You don't want to run a tab? Me: No thanks. Woman: *still holding my card hostage* What are you drinking? Me: We already have our drinks. Woman: *surprised tone* Did you pay for them already? Me: Yes. Can I have my card please? She then returns my card along with my bill for $21.25. Me: Why is this $21.25 the menu said it was $15. Woman: Its an old menu; that's the old price. Me: It doesn't say anywhere that there are new prices. The only place that has a written cost states $15. This sounds a little shady but whatever. *I sign it [NO TIP] and give her back the paper. Woman: *Blank Stare* *walks away* And FYI I'm a good tipper...PLUS when we got our drinks (that we paid cash for) we tipped the bartender $5 10 minutes or so go by and hookahs are being delivered; just not to our table. 30 MINUTES LATER.... STILL NO HOOKAH Now I'm ready to ask where ours is, so when I see the hookah delivery girl walking towards the back with another order I follow her into the pool room. As I get closer I realize she's trying to find out who ordered it. No one is claiming it; they're looking at her like 'that's not what I ordered' so I asked her if it was my order. We determined it was and she delivered it to my table. With a bill. For $16.05 I ask the original woman I ordered it from why did I receive a $16.05 bill and yet she charged my card $21.25 Her response was I had to pay for the hose. I told her it already has a hose. She then takes the bill out of my hand, sends the girl to go and retrieve my hookah, and walks away from me again. I asked her for my bill back and she tells me it wasn't my bill or my hookah. She then said that she'd refund my money and she wanted me to leave. Yup. I was asked to leave. So let's recap. I had to wait a half an hour while I saw (non-Black) people order AFTER me and get their orders BEFORE me. I had to prepay when other (non-Black) people got their bill along with their order. I had to pay $21.25 when other (non-Black) people got to pay $16.05. I ask why this is and I get my delivered order revoked and asked to leave. I can only HOPE that my money was actually refunded to my card because she refused to refund it in cash. I'll NEVER EVER EVER go there again. But I'm happy that other people aren't having the same experience I had. read more

Very dive- bar atmosphere. Theyve got some modern juke box, the waitress/bartender wore something that reminded me of goth.. but less suicidal. There is a pool table in the back, and yes they do serve hookah. Hookah was pretty average, no one came around to change coal or antyhing, seemed understaffed. We ordered the sweet plantains which were pretty good and sambuca. The sambuca was poured into the glasss properly by the owner, and he made it the right way by adding a few coffee beans in it-- that cost 9 bucks!.. They had LIteas and margaritas special that day for 5$... which is not bad. Overall, i would get the drink special, sit with a hookah (15 $) and sit out doors and relax. After ordering from here, I wanted to come and check the place out. I'm a sucker for hookah, and it's kind of rare to find a good place that serves hookah and has good prices. My co worker and I have now made this our new weekly spot! The bartender, Britney was an absolute doll. Super friendly and attentive. The lady who does the hookah, Lucy made us laugh. Plus since it was a Wednesday night, it wasn't too packed. Perfect place for us to enjoy our night after work. Our last visit there, they were out of the food items we wanted but the cook made sure to come and take our order. Quesadilla and boneless wings were soooooooo good. Abbey's is a super dive bar that allows smoking inside. They even sell cigarettes at the bar! But more importantly for me, they serve hookah. Their hookahs aren't great. Chinese hookahs, small clay bowls, and instant light coals. Needed a lot of work on my part to get it going. But I guess this place is a bar first, hookah bar second. Drinks were decently priced, and the crowd was fun. Every dive bar should have a pool table. I even got to play with other patrons last night after signing up on the chalkboard. The girls working the bar were nice, served my hookah and drinks quickly. Didn't try any food, but I'd come back to play pool and have a few drinks, probably not for hookah. PORTION SIZE IS OUT OF CONTROL! Abbey's claims to be a Portuguese barbeque grill on their menu. Their menu is mostly pretty basic bar food (1/2 chicken, burgers, steak, etc). The part that caught my eye, however, was the ribs. They have both pork and beef ribs. 1/2 rack pork ribs for $8 or a full rack for $14 is a REALLY good deal. When I called to ask they said that they are babyback ribs. When they arrived they seemed to be more like regular pork ribs...maybe teenager-back ribs...but not quite babyback. They were dry rubbed ribs with a good BBQ aroma that were piled into a mountain of meat. They weren't quite fall of the bone tender, but they were pretty easy to eat. The up side to not being quite babyback is that there's more meat overall...the down side is that there's more fat and connective tissue to pick around. Everything being said, the ribs were very good, and I'll definitely get them again. They give you some BBQ sauce to go along with the ribs. It's a vinegar based sauce that is REALLY good, and goes perfectly with the ribs. Along with the ribs you get to choose 2 from: side salad, fries, and rice. I got the fries and salad. The amount of both that was given was about twice what I was expecting. I had 3 mountains of food in front of me. The fries were very fresh and quite good. Just up the street there are bars with more outdoor seating, bigger selections, or bigger dance floors. The big draw of this pace is supposed irish bar and middle eastern hookah mix. While I won't call myself a hookah master, my friends and I frequent hookah spots all the time. There hookah is trash. The hookah itself is small. In addition, they don't pack it tight. I live a few houses away from this spot and finally decided to check it out due to it's sheer proximity. What a dump! Such a dingy, divey, disgusting venue. We were seated outside and I ordered nachos (sound simple, right?) while my friend ordered wings. My nachos arrived 40minutes late, cold, and stale. The cheese on top of the nachos tasted like sour milk or rotten cheese curds. Repulsive! The wings were fatty and small and just didn't look safe. We ordered a hookah too which arrived after food -- which was a waste. We told the waitress to not even bother placing it down because we we're leaving. I spoke to the decrepit owner in the pool table room/cashier. She sits in what looks like a hoarders linen closest and she is sooo creepy! The owner wasn't too keen on giving us any discount on the bill but eventually we were able to pay half and leave. Still not a bargain as we didn't touch our food or take a puff of the hookah. The back area, by the way, looks like a haunted pool room. And I'm pretty sure the teenagers who were back there were underage and molesting each other on the ripped up, disgusting couches surrounding the pool table. As a bar Abbey's is cheap and down-to-earth and generally quite lively on the weekends. Jukebox filled with 90's hiphop, hooka's, pool in the back, and you can smoke CIGS in the place. Whoooomp there it is!!! This place locked it down. The mixed drinks were about $6 each w premium LQ so my dolla dolla went a long way here too! The bar maid was superior. Not in her appearance or demeanor. Her ability to make those drinks so strong without getting fired makes her legendary alone, ok? After 4 Blue Moons and 2 JD's n Coke I was ready for the next bar.. but Abbey's is where I had my fun. It is not a big place. But there is certainly more than enough lighting in that place. There were a bunch of tables and the bar was a decent size. A chill spot.....i come here with friends to shoot pool in the back, they also have hookah, take my advice just get the big jug of brew dispenser you can share with friends so you dont always have to go to the bar because it can get busy at certain times. We ordered delivery from here to try something new, but should have stuck to White Star for our burgers. First off, the order was incorrect. They sent the wrong burger, forgot the BBQ sauce for the half rack of ribs, and sent greasy, soppy onion rings instead of fries. When we called, they weren't terribly gracious about fixing the problem -- they said there was no chili burger, so the chef just sent what he thought would be an okay replacement, even though there was a $4 price difference. Eventually, they sent over the fries we'd asked for, along with the money that was supposed to be refunded. As for the food they did send, the ribs -- sans sauce -- were chewy, not tender, and the burger was bland. read more

From time to time if I'm in town ill stop by Abbey's for a fulfilling meal and drink. The garlic shrimp w rice n salad is one of my fav dishes from this place. It is sooo good, usually after I eat all the shrimp, I mix the sauce n rice together and finish the plate clean. FYI don't order it with the crab meat, takes away from the flavor. Garlic shrimp and rice, thats it. COMPRENDE! Burgers are good too, the greek salad is surprisingly goos as well. In regards to the reviews calling some of the patrons weird ppl, I would have to rephrase and abstain from the word weird. lol Its a local crowd mixed w an artsy crowd. I know of few of the ppl that frequent this place and some of the are nationally recognized tattoo artists, local teachers form JC high schools, musicians, and the regular jane's and joe's of working class JC. I am a non-smoker, so the ciggs and hooka's don't really bother me, some people still do step outside to smoke regardless of smoking being allowed inside the bar. Oh yeah, Martha (the owner) is great. Real friendly, such a sweetheart. The waitresses are cool too. Always smiling and asking if you need anything. Sometimes Martha even lets my boy K play music from his iPod. Which I think is nice, then we jokingly argue w her about what we could play and what not to play.
