Food was excellent. The wood fried bread and pizza is extraordinary. Re the 20% mandatory tip: I split my time between Ventura and San Francisco--where no tip restaurants are very common because the gratuity is part to the cost of the food. It's not a separate line item that simply pisses most people off (particularly in a restaurant such as this with no wait staff, counter service only). I really want this place to survive, so I hope they'll change direction and simply raise menu items 20%. Again, very common in SF and doesn't cause friction with customers--as is clearly the case here. read more

I'm sure you've see all the other reviews complaining about the 20% service fee and I'm completely with them. Got two drinks, a pizza and a salad which came out to $80. Food was totally mediocre, I forgot about it the second I walked away. Not sure why the 20% isn't just put into the prices to begin with. Feels a bit unscrupulous. Bottom line is this place is wholly un-Ventura. That 'service fee' may work with the LA conquistadors in Ojai but Venturans will undoubtedly be put off by this. read more

There is ONE THING that is keeping us from coming back. Meanwhile excellent food, great service, nice atmosphere on the patio with the overhead string lights. HOWEVER we won't pay $28 for a small (as in two tiny glasses) carafe of wine that becomes $37 !!! with tax and your mandatory 20% tip added. Fix the wine prices and pour size and we will be back. Went for a pastries and a latte to go but was surprised that they automatically charge 20% gratuity and didn't see their note at the register until after the fact. I do tip for coffee but it's absurd to automatically charge 20% for a to go order. Cookie and chocolate croissant were tasty. Latte was nothing spectacular. read more

Had an absolutely wonderful experience here! We came as a party of six to celebrate two friends' birthdays and it could not have been better. The food was out of this world. You should definitely try the whitefish croquettes, fish carpaccio, pizzas, and those little anchovy bites. Just order the whole menu because the chefs here crush it. Went for lunch and didn't realize it was only sandwiches, pastries and slices of pizza during lunch hours. We were pleasantly surprised! The sandwiches are on homemade baguette. They also have marinated veggies on the sandwiches that are delicious. The pizza was also really good. The patio is adorable too. We will be back to try dinner! read more

Everyone upset about an automatic tip must be cheap, and, not to mention, against making a livable wage available to those not in a standard 9-5. The food is excellent, staff is wonderful, and I have never had a bad experience at either location. I don't often leave reviews but I feel the need to do so because it was such a shocking experience. The food is flavorless and overpriced. Last night, the two of us went there for dinner and ordered a green salad to share, two individual size pizzas, bread and a glass a wine and cider. This cost a whopping $125! Plus, you order and pay at the counter and they automatically add 20% tip! For what, I don't know. The pizzas were bland and tasteless and I had the house special! The salad was just a bunch of greens with a simple vinaigrette and cost $17. The only redeeming quality was the outside courtyard. I can't believe Pinyon in Ventura will survive very long. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Pinyon. The staff was VERY courteous and friendly and our meal was delicious. We got an order of the bocadillo's with anchovy (delicious bite!), market green salad (so fresh and light) and the Emily Alba pizza (add sausage-YUM). My husband got the IPA on draft and i went for a glass of their chilled red- we both really enjoyed these. We opted for a seat on their outdoor patio and It did not disappoint. such a great atmosphere!Not to mention, they source locally and everything is made IN HOUSE! They have an inclusive pricing system meaning there is no tip option- we felt this was really convenient and we appreciated the transparency! Very disappointing! I was initially excited to find a new bakery/restaurant in downtown Ventura, and was willing to pay $11 for a loaf of bread, but when they rang me up it was $14 +. I've been wanting to try this place out because of the food. I went in on a lazy afternoon and it was dead. The place is small and uninviting. The cashier was nice but not genuine I felt. I wanted food but shortly realized that this was a cafe at best and not a restaurant. So I tried the pistachio danish. I loved the danish and didn't mind the 7 dollar price tag for it. My problem was the coffee. The coffee was pre brewed and was in a carafe sitting on the counter. The serving size was between 8 oz to 12oz. But definatly smaller then 12 oz. And the price was a whopping 6.75???? Give me a freaking break man. I felt robbed after the fact. I would understand such a price if the coffee was brewed in a more sophisticated method (French press or pour over) but even then when I asked the cashier about the coffee itself she really couldn't describe it or its uniqueness and just said it was a medium roast. Also, the 20% service charge is a joke because she literally turned around grabbed the carafe poured the coffee and then handed it to me. I understand the 25 dollars hour for employees is quite ambitious but for a place that is only open from Thursday to Sunday it kind of evens out for the three days employees are out of work. So to market it as if the employer is the savior in this situation it's all misleading in the end. Will not be back. read more

I love this place so much! My husband and I went for a delicious lunch. We each had a sandwich on their homemade bread. Each came with a small cup of their guarding, Italian pickled vegetables. A few of those on the sandwich really elevated it. The courtyard was delightful, the service friendly. I liked that instead of a tip, there is a 20% service charge like is done in France.
