My brother-in-law invited me to a member event, so we took a day trip down to beautiful Ojai. After driving a few miles outside of the main town, we came across this cute and intimate winery, which, I might add, is family-owned. We had to pick up some wine bottles, so we decided to take in the member perks and enjoy our day listening to live music, drinking some great wine, and dining on a few of the delicious foods they provide. The lady and man at the entrance guided us to our table and immediately started the experience. We got to do a total of six tastings and tried out some charcuterie snacks. A few of my favorite wines were the Sahngri-La, Pink Moment Syrah, and the Zinfandel. I enjoyed the crackers and cheese they gave us to pair with our favorite testers. Throughout the event, they brought out some fruit, more wine, and pizza tasters, which were all delicious. I really enjoyed their pizza, so I definitely want to come back to enjoy the restaurant and drink some more refreshing wines. read more

While my friend and I were spending the day in Ojai, there was one stop he refused to let us skip. Whenever he's in town, Boccali's Pizza & Pasta is always on his list, and he wasn't about to let me leave without trying their homemade strawberry shortcake. We settled in with a couple glasses of Raywood Cabernet Sauvignon while we waited for dessert. Looking around, it was easy to see why this place has become such a local favorite. The red-and-white checkered tablecloths, vintage family photos, and easygoing atmosphere make Boccali's feel like it's been woven into the community for decades. When the strawberry shortcake arrived, it was immediately clear why people make the drive. Fresh strawberries are piled generously over a warm shortcake and topped with an enormous cloud of fresh whipped cream. The contrast between the warm shortcake, cool whipped cream, and fresh berries made every bite memorable. Despite its impressive size, it never felt overly heavy. Boccali's has been serving this seasonal favorite since opening in 1986, and it's easy to see why it has become their signature dessert. One thing I especially appreciated is that it's only available during strawberry season. Knowing I was enjoying something that isn't on the menu year-round made the experience feel even more special. This time, we're camping in Ojai and we decided to come here for lunch before heading to our campground at Dennison Park. This time around, we ordered: - Antipasto Salad (good) - Medium Spinach Pizza (yummy and cheesy) - Lasagna (good and cheesy) - Pasta Alfredo (yummy and creamy) - Ravioli in Pesto Sauce (ok, we could have skipped this) - Strawberry Shortcake (yummm) Before we got seated, we had a long wait since they skipped our name on the wait list. Always head up to Ojai during the summer to get their strawberry shortcake. It's so good I recommend ordering it first, then get an entree or pizza which you can take home what you don't eat. My only complaint is with one of the servers. She has long blonde hair that she wears loose, letting it fall forward right over your food. I find it gross! Why isn't she required to at least tie it back? She's never been our server but if she was I'd request someone else. read more

Boccali's in Ojai was on our list to try during our first visit to Ojai, especially since it's a family-owned and operated restaurant. We were already pretty full from spending the afternoon in town, so we ordered a pizza to share, the scampi pasta, and a Caesar .The pasta was delicious. The pizza had a slightly off taste to me personally and the toppings seem to slide off, although the rest of our group seemed to enjoy it. The staff were very friendly and accommodating throughout our visit. The restaurant is situated on a main road and the seating outside is really nice. We also ordered the strawberry shortcake, and it was amazing. The strawberries were fresh and it was definitely a highlight of the meal. We're lucky in California (and in Ojai), as we're not freezing and snowing like the rest of the U.S. Played a round of golf at Soule Park about a mile away. Stopped in with my son for a quick after round bite. Had two pasta dishes, fettuccine Alfredo with chicken which was nice and creamy, also had the spaghetti with their pesto sauce with a side of their delicious Italian sausage. Such a busy place but the employees do a fabulous job keeping things moving. I had the sincere pleasure of being served by Willoughby. He came to the table with a warm, sweet smile and a genuine love for people. He helped me choose the house lasagna and it was fantastic (10/10) with lots of stringy cheese and nicely cooked noodles and meat sauce. It's served piping hot so be sure to let it cool a bit. I had their 4 piece garlic bread that was chewed and soft with melted cheese. (9/10). The ambiance is relaxing, easygoing vibe with nice background music. Outdoor and indoor seating. Authentic Italian style vibe. I had to try their famous strawberry shortcake. I would give it an 8/10 as the strawberries were absolutely ripe and sweet with a fluffy whipped topping. Came to Boccali's mainly for dessert and honestly - it did not disappoint. The location is beautiful, and parking is fairly easy with their lot. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and the outdoor area especially has a really nice, relaxed vibe. Be prepared though, there is usually a long wait time, both for dining and even for pick up orders. It's definitely gets busy, but the staff does a good job and the service was friendly and efficient when we were there. We actually weren't even hungry and came specifically for dessert, and if you haven't tried their strawberry shortcake, you absolutely need to. It's so good - fresh, light, and just one of those things you keep thinking about after. Honestly, I wish we had eaten one there and grabbed another to go for later. read more

Came during 'Ojai Pixie Month'. Had a delightful lunch at Ojai Valley Inn, then went to Ojai Olive Oil Co. for EVOL tasting. Afterwards we all went to Boccali's for some r & r on the drive back because we saw a lot of cars outside and figured it must be good,...or so we thought. The small pizza we ordered (mushroom & sausage, $16), as it turns out, was a HUGE disappointment. The DiGiorno supreme in my freezer tastes better and more satisfying. Also- they do not allow dogs even in the outside patio. We were only allowed to order to go and eat at a bench outside. At least the restroom is clean. read more

Boccali's is a family favorite. We come here multiple times a year, and we always get the lasagna with a bottle of red wine. We also get an appetizer of bruschetta, and then we get the strawberry shortbread for dessert. Lastly, we pick up some fresh oranges to bring home. We've been coming here for years, and the quality has been consistent. Everything is always just as delicious as the last time. What a cute little place! My boyfriend mentioned this place and was told the pizza was bomb. It's a good thing we came at the time that we did because people after us were waiting for an hour or more and it started to get very cold outside. They have outside or inside seating, I was so hungry that I didn't care, and they have heat lamps. I ordered the meatballs because I figured it was good to get in some protein before the carb fest and I did not expect those meatballs to be so good. I should have asked for two orders. They were tender and full of flavor. The pizza is GOOD but it's not traditional pizza. It very much tastes homemade in the best way possible and I wish we had ordered a pizza to take home. Sorry to say this is the worst pizza I ever had...We got the large combo heavy on the green pepper and red onion, wasn't really cooked. You picked up a slice and it bent over and everything fell off. The wine was nice as well as sitting on the lawn and people watching. However, the pizza was probably the worst I've had. Slimy, sloppy, low quality ingredients and an overall disappointment. Not to mention parents who let their kids run wild and throw trash all over the place. Fix your pizza and set some ground rules for your patrons and this place would be amazing! The food was amazing. I had the meat lasagna, which was very good, my wife had a meatball sandwich which just melted in your mouth. The star of the day was the bruschetta. Served differently than most restaurants where they hand you bread with everything on top. Here it was a fresh loaf of a flat bread sort of, with sliced onions and shallots. A drive out to Boccali's on the east side of Ojai is always like a mini vacation for Dear Hubby and me. Even more so in 2024, since a large slide took out a section of Highway 150 / aka Santa Paula-Ojai Road some months ago. We usually like to go "the back way", especially since Boccali's is at the base of Dennison Grade. Eventually the through route will be restored. I had feared that the traffic on Route 33 into Ojai from Ventura would be extra-crowded because of the alternate road closure, but we got lucky. We went over on a Sunday afternoon. There must not have been any sort of big event happening, so our ride went smoothly. We picked up a dear friend who lives in town so that the three of us could enjoy a leisurely meal out on the lawn area adjacent to the restaurant. Shaded beautifully on a hot afternoon, with just a hint of a breeze, it was a perfect setting for homemade taste delights from the kitchen. Their famous tomato salad won't be served for a few more weeks. The tomatoes are still busy ripening on the vine. That seasonal salad is now listed on the menu as available August - October. Their beyond-amazing strawberry shortcake is available, and oh-so-delicious! The blend of sweet Ventura County strawberries with their own buttery shortcake and an extremely generous whipped cream topping is just divine. I had to avoid most of the whipped cream, sadly, but even a hint of it made the strawberries sing. DH split the lasagna with meat sauce with our friend. They also offer spinach-filled lasagna, too. It's so rich that it would take a very hearty appetite to finish it by themselves. It's perfect to share, with the bubbly baked cheese as the top layer which presents so beautifully. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce, and brought enough home for two more meals after the serving that I had at the restaurant. Very generous portions! Their garlic bread is my all-time favorite iteration of said bread. They just have the best combo of crisply finished crust with softer center and enough garlic to lend its flavor without overwhelming the bread. It's perfect for my taste buds. Also perfect are the friendly staff members that do the serving. I've been enjoying the escape to Boccali's for five decades. I'm so grateful to the Boccali family for creating this wonderful spot in the country for all of us to enjoy for all these years. read more

The famous strawberry shortcake lives up to its standards - the biscuit shortbread has a cornmeal texture which was soft and paired PERFECTLY with the sweet plump strawberries and whip cream. I have heard about this place from multiple friends so I decided the next time I go to Ojai I have to stop. It's really cute with a rustic vibe. They have picnic tables all around and then some in the back with a nice grassy area where you can also get wine. From my different friend's recommendations they said the pizza is good and the strawberry shortcake is a must. They are known for the strawberry shortcake. So i listened and ordered the pizza and the strawberry shortcake. The pizza was ok with a weird after taste. All 5 of us had the same opinion that went. Then for dessert I tried the shortcake. I'm not sure why people are impressed. It was strawberries and whipped cream thrown on top of a very dry biscuit. I didn't finish it. I wanted to love it but everything was just mediocre. I don't think I will be back. If I do, it's for the wine and charcuterie board. And the lady working the wine booth was so nice and friendly. This review is from our dining experience on early Friday evening, May 29th I had been waiting to try Boccali's for a while. It was on my radar since Lyss Eats, Instagram food blogger, made a post about it. There aren't any yummy authentic Italian places in Camarillo. I'm 100% Italian and was raised with the good stuff, generations upon generations of recipes handed down. Plus I used to live in Providence Rhode Island so I know the real deal when I taste it. Naturally I was excited to try Boccali's and share the experience with my 3 and 6 year old. It's not always easy to get out the door and go on excursions with two kids in tote but I do it when I can. Finally we made our way to Ojai and when I pulled up to Boccalis, I felt all the mystic pizza vibes. I was so happy we were there. We decided to sit inside because it was so cute and my 6 year old was cold. Our waitor was so sweet and kind and patient. And I felt the kids behaved really well. The food was SO GOOD. I was planning on going up to the shift leader after our meal to express how pleased I was and couldn't wait to return! But...that all changed when we encountered a very rude waitress regarding my kids being in the way. I was a waitress for 15 years prior to becoming a full time mom, so without any explanation, I get it. But sometimes I need some guidance on where would be best for us to sit before we sit down and order. I think communication is key here. And I saw the restaurant has one doorway to get outside to the patio seating so I could see where the frustration can easily build but with all due respect, I didn't deserve the dirty looks I received from the waitress. She sternly mentioned to me, "you might want to get them back because we have trays coming through." I totally understood and respected it. I picked up my three year old and was waiting for the waiter to bring the check. He was waiting for me to confirm on a strawberry shortcake or not. I can only contain my three year old for so long before it begins to feel abusive so I put him down and when he gently got in the way again, the waitress shot me the nastiest look to which I said outloud, "don't worry we're leaving. He's three. Let's calm down here." I was immediately turned off, didn't order dessert, and expressed how hurt I was to the hostess who was very kind. Here's the thing- there's a WAY to handle these things. Shooting a mother of two dirty looks after I drove an hour, paid for our food, and was so excited to dine here, is the WRONG way. That being said, I hope this gets addressed because there's always a better (and frankly classier) way to model healthy communication between patrons and servers. And after all, we should be modeling that for future generations and business alike. The way you handle your frustrations with patrons is very character revealing of how you handle everything. So, sadly, I can't support this business until this issue is acknowledged and handled in a respectful way. read more

No matter how short or long of a visit I have when I come to Ojai, Boccali's is a must! Have been coming here since I was a kid with my family and it's still just as delicious. Parking - Parking out front and a large grass lot behind. Ambiance - I have always sat outside, even when it's chilly they have great heaters. Casual vibe. Service - waiters have always been young, friendly and attentive. Food - Garlic bread is a must have. Love love their pizza and pasta, will usually get a casear salad to share, their fettuccine or ravioli and a pizza to take home or share. The last visit in October was great. I forgot the gals name, but she was just the sweetest waitress. She was very understanding & accommodating with a kiddo with special needs. I've tried their catered Lasagna at a Rehearsal Dinner & it was soo good... Had their handmade pepperoni pizza which comes in a big portion. It was simple, cheesy. I'm more of a veggie topping or meat topping person. They do use fresh ingredients here. Recently tried the Eggplant Parmesan & it was just delicious. I almost devoured the whole dish! I was a bit hesitant, Bec who eats eggplant instead of lasagna?! I do lol. I wanted to try something different. Especially when one is trying to limit their carb intake. I would definitely order that again. From February to October is when they offer their famous fresh home-style seasonal dessert. It's the Strawberry Shortcake Dessert. It is delightful fresh & very shareable. It looks like a glob of whipped cream, which it is. But underneath all of that are those sweet, fresh, juicy strawberries and the hidden crumbles at the bottom that soak in all the goodness. Yum!
