We recently visited Pirates Deck in Oak Island, North Carolina, hoping for a fun and satisfying family meal, but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. I ordered the shrimp platter, which was decent but lacked the fresh, coastal flavor I was expecting. My wife went with the BLT sandwich -- simple and serviceable, but again, nothing that stood out. One of our sons had the wings, the other had the chicken tenders, and both said they were "fine," which kind of sums up the overall vibe of the meal. What really stood out, though -- and not in a good way -- was the service. It took a long time for anyone to even acknowledge us after we were seated, and we weren't the only ones who noticed; we actually watched a younger couple get up and leave after waiting too long to be helped. That's never a good sign. To be fair, the food wasn't bad -- just very average -- but when paired with the slow service and underwhelming atmosphere, it's hard to find a reason to return. Oak Island has plenty of other dining options, and next time, we'll probably try our luck elsewhere.

Captains Bounty and Sausage and cheese quiche with cheese grits and a biscuit.

Sometimes you just need a dang good burger…read more Stopped in at Paul's in Oak Island and went with the single Black & Blu smash burger, topped with pickles, lettuce and tomato, served on sourdough with a pile of fries. Add a cold local beer to the equation and, well... that's a pretty solid way to spend lunch after fishing the morning. The burger had that crispy, caramelized smash-burger edge you're looking for, while the sourdough was toasted up nicely and gave the whole thing a little something extra. The pickles and fresh veggies brought the right amount of crunch and acidity to balance everything out. Asked for some hot sauce and they brought me some scotch bonnet, hot sauce in a plastic cup. It was good but a little dab will do ya! And those fries? Golden, crispy and seasoned just right. No sad little handful of fries hiding in the corner of the plate here. Nothing overly complicated. Just good food, generous portions and a laid-back Oak Island vibe. Sometimes the best meal isn't the fanciest one on the menu. It's a great burger, a basket of crispy fries, and a local cold beer sitting in front of you. The tuna can have the spotlight one day. The burger gets it the next.

We saw our waitress a total of three times. When we sat down, forty minutes later for a refill, & another twenty minutes later when she brought our food out to us. The best thing about our wait was the bartenders singing voice. P.S. check your shrimp quesadilla for the tails.

It lent to a cozy vibe, and our terrorizer kids even chilled out a little. Highly recommend the flight of mimosa bombs (they were delightfully strong and equal to about 1 drink in volume!), and the all-you can eat brunch--but only if you want Diane to give you a magical experience with deliciousness coming out your ears. Bacon is crisp, FRIED CHICKEN PUTS CHICK FIL-A to damn shame, eggs were made with lots of yummy butter, the grill lends a nice char and toast to the sourdoughs and avocado toasts, the fruit in the parfaits were very freshly cut and prepared--the entire experience was handmade as we ordered, and any wait was WELL worth it once we got to chowing down! Diane was welcoming, extremely adaptable to our situation, and frankly cared about our experience. She might be a little overworked but; The rest of the town is full of the rudest service crews... Diane made me feel special. Love that woman!!!! Protect her at all costs! Lmaoooo

They have a variety of seating options, including some group-friend booths. On my last visit, I sat at the bar and ordered a flight of beer. Tony the bartender was very patient with my request for a flight of local beer with no IPAs or hoppy beers. He picked out: 2: Wrightsville Beach Orange Crush, 3. Waterline Kolsh, 4. Teaches Peaches, 1. Watermelon Dragon Fruit Burst. I was familiar with the first three and loved them. I jokingly refer to Wrightsville Beach Orange Crush as creamsicle beer. It isn't too sweet, but the Orange flavor is quite strong. The Waterline Kolsh is light and very easy to drink. The Teaches Peaches is one of my favorites due to its light fruity flavor. The Watermelon Dragon Fruit Burst was a wildcard in Tony's lineup. This sour was a refreshing way to mix up my beer tasting. My friend also got a flight and didn't like one of the beers he chose. Tony swapped it out for a different beer as soon as I told him and the new one was well-received. My favorite part of this visit was that Tony decided to bring me a sample of the 8. Firestone Walker Mind Haze, because it was a non-hoppy IPA and he thought I might like it. It wasn't my fave, but I really appreciated the opportunity to try something new. I snacked on free popcorn all during my visit. The popcorn machine is in the back. Also in the back are single-stall restrooms. Tavern Law has an A+ in my book because they have great local beer on tap and they are gay friendly.
