I've been here several times now. It is a hole in the wall joint. You better get here early if you want a seat. The service is pretty quick considering the volume. The service has always been good for me. My only complaint here is that they forgot to bring me the spicy BBQ once, but with the volume they do anyone could forget one item. The food: well, I have to say that I have only had the brisket here. I tried it on my first visit and that was it. I can't go in that place without ordering brisket. I had high hopes, I am a BBQ snob and have heard it was great. I got the brisket sandwich, unfortunately my brisket was dry, I added a good amount of sauce on it. I wasn't a fan of the pickles that came with the sandwich. The mac n cheese was very cheesy but lacked flavor. For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to write your initials - then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, a warehouse in the shadow of the airport in Hapeville is to your liking, then so will be the food. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 125 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), this is one of the better ones. What it is, is Pit Boss Barbecue across the street from where bit used to be, and now inside what looks to have been maybe a warehouse with enough floor space to play rollerball. Pit Boss is another of those places where you stand in line to order (always a line at lunch, they have great lunch specials), and then grab a table and wait for a smiling staffer to find you with your food. The ribs were as good as any, on par with Anna's in Kirkwood or The Commissary in Germantown Hills. Nice rub, good char, moist with a nice mix of smoke flavor, hickory and pecan. Tender but requiring you bite the meat off the bone. When the meat "falls off the bone," it's almost certain to have been parboiled, or baked first or spent too much time under the heat lamp. Almost as good, and still very good, was the sliced brisket. Generous serving of sliced brisket with just enough fat left to keep the meat moist and hold the flavor. We'll try the pulled pork and chicken (the wings, we were told by the people at the next table, were also excellent) on our next trip. Seems to the Brown Shoe Gourmet that anyone who would go to a barbecue joint and order a hamburger is bordering on the sacrilegious. A few words about the sides: the sign at the ordering counter said the fries were potato skin on, indicating freshly cut. Mine missed the cut; nothing special and hinted at spending some time in the freezer. The collards (nicknamed Irene's Collards), on the other hand, were finely chopped and seasoned to perfection. Grandma Lucy's baked beans (you couldn't make that up) were very tasty, there was no name on the slaw and after tasting it, we knew why. Bland. The hit of the lunch that day (insofar as sides are concerned) was the Brunswick (spell it however you like, there a lot of options) stew. Everything you hoped to find in a generous cup and a little more. Pit Boss offers two sauces. Their mild sauce is just that with a taste of vinegar. Very good. Their hot sauce is that. Very and it lingers. The service is excellent. Yes, the line was long, but the food was on our table in less than five minutes of swiping our credit card. And they have televisions. Not sure why, but they do. Overall, the Brown Shoe Gourmet rates Pit Boss five stars with the hope they do something with their slaw but don't dare touch the ribs or brisket. I was here for a bday weekend, u smelled the Bbq aroma before u even hit the door! we ordered with Erin .. I knew the food would be good when I asked what would she recommend on the menu and she said everything we order the tray with a little bit of everything: ribs chicken maBaby Back Ribsc and cheese, chicken wings and collard greens plus Texas toast which was hella buttery , everything was so delicious especially their signature sauce for the ribs wish I would have taken pictures but my taste buds definitely remember the experience. I love Pit Boss. The food is good and the staff is nice. I like the new location because it's a lot bigger than the old one. The only thing I don't really like is that all the sides are a little spicy. The spice isn't unbearable and the sides are delicious, but it would be nice to have a spicy or not spicy option. I get the two meat abs two side place or the 1/2 pound chopped chicken with two sides. The greens (these aren't spicy) are wonderful, and the Mac and cheese (a little spicy) is to die for. Y'know, I went to Pit Boss BBQ years ago when I worked in the Hapeville area, and 8 years later, I find myself sitting back at Pit Boss BBQ, wondering how on earth haven't I reviewed this place?!? Located at the corner of Virginia ave and Clay place, parking for Pit Boss BBQ can be a challenge anywhere close to lunch time. In fact, several cars will park along Clay because of the small parking lot. Once you get inside though, the food is worth it! We ordered the following: 2 spare ribs and 5 wings ($17) 2 spare ribs and 1/4 chicken ($18) 1/2 lb Rib tips and a side ($8.60) peach cobbler small ($2.25) I tried a bit of everything and what I really enjoyed were their wings. They're smoked, well seasoned and they (along with the chicken) are fall off the bone tender. I don't think you'd go wrong with either the wings or chicken. Very very good! Ribs, and to a lesser degree the rib tips, were flavored well but were tough, chewy, and all of them seemed to need a few more hours in the smoker. If you have an issue with tough meats, you probably do not want to order any of their ribs. peach cobbler was more bread than peach, but the flavor was good. As for the sides, we also ordered brunsiwck stew, collard greens and baked beans with cornbread. The collard greens were surprisingly very good! Well flavored and not that "out of the can" flavor many restaurants have. Baked beans were a bit sweet for me and the brunswick stew was also a pleasant surprise. Very nice flavors with nice chunks of smoked goodies in the stew to flavor it. It's a win. I think if you live in the Hapeville area or are close, it's a no brainer to stop by Pit Boss. The ribs were a little chewy when I got them, my girlfriend got the brisket, brisket was good. theres only two options for BBQ sauce, mild or spicy but I prefer a more Smokey BBQ. This review is on a smoked sausage sandwich not the bbq ribs or brisket. Very disappointed and not to be expected because this item used to be very very good. Sausage itself tasted of a courser brand than a juicy Georgia boy and it was skinny, dry and overcooked. The green peppers and onions were tasteless and had the texture of once frozen vegetables that were microwaved. This was all served on a hard toasted and burnt hoagie roll that I couldn't bite into. I got the brisket and rib tips. It came with 2 sides and a bread/cornbread. They forgot my macaroni and cheese. The brisket was really tender and juicy. The rib tips were also tender. They don't have a lot of flavor. They do come with sauces. I say the hot is overpowering. I like the mild. read more

I hate to do this because of the 4 star rating but I believe something should be said and hopefully a wake up call. I had much anticipation for eating here and unfortunately this place fell way short of my bbq expectations. Walking up this place is pretty divey but I am cool with that because I love eating at a hole in the wall. What was not pleasant was getting out of my car and the overwhelming stench of urine coming from the back part of the parking lot. I was not here for the urine scented parking lot and once inside really basic with tables and to a surprise a full bar... After contemplating the menu for several minutes I asked the order taker can I get a 2 meat combo of my choice and she told me no you have to order the 3 meat which whatever but a ton of food. I had the following and I will break it down. Baby back ribs, brisket, sausage with potato salad and beans. I wanted coke slaw but this bbq place decided to run out and not make more. Brisket- completely dried out no moisture left in the meat at all and could tell it had been sitting around. Don't mind brisket falling a part but this was more like well done over cooked meat with not a great smoke flavor. Baby Back Ribs- whoever smoked these I am sorry because the cook heating them up burnt and cooked every bit of flavor out of these. Reminded me more of jerky than smoked meat. Sausage- the one bright spot good snap on the casing and good smoke flavor really enjoyed these and was the best part of the dish. Baked beans-tasted like they were straight out of can not even worth eating. Potato salad- ok but lacked flavor but was pretty good compared to the beans. At least tasted like someone put a little effort into it. This might sound picky but I am a bbq guy and if you look at all the different bbq places I have been to. Plus attending the annual west coast bbq champions cook off every year I think I have the right to distinguish between what good, not so good and great eats and tastes like. I believe this place has the potential but the chiefs need to get back in charge of this place. I stopped by here for lunch and found it to be a popular down home barbecue joint with lots of local characters. Not too long of a wait, but it did take 15 minutes to get our done-in order. The half rack of ribs with two sides was a really full-sized dish that provided leftovers for dinner. The hot BBQ sauce was also recommended. The sweet tea was also reasonably sweet (for Atlanta). Now I eat alot of bbq. This place I just recently discovered. One of my favorite bbq meats is brisket. This place has some of the best I've had hands down. The brisket was flavorful and moist. The collard greens tasted just like somebody's granny had been in the back cooking them. I also had the cheesy mashed potatoes witch seem to have a kick of spice in them. For my birthday, I was in Atlanta for a Braves game and on search for leg-end-ary BBQ. My pal said he saw a list of under-rated BBQ places and Pit Boss was one of them. I It looks like a Bbq joint and has a liquor store out front. I walk up to the counter because I am wanting to try it all. The gentlemen tells me they have a 3-meat plate not on the menu. It was a whooping $36! Since it was my birthday and I had already given him some grief, I went with it. I did feel like he was rude to me though as I tried to compliment him later and he seemed to respond to me with an ugly look. For my 3 meats, I picked ribs, brisket, and pork. It came with 2 sides which mine were potato salad and beans. Cornbread was included and as much food as they gave me....it was worth $36! No stinginess here! The ribs and pork were both phenomenal. The ribs had a special dry rub that was made from their BBQ sauce and the pork was pulled, tender, and mixed with the sauce. Some of the best meat I've ever had from a BBQ joint. The brisket was too dry for my liking but besides that, was prepared really well. There are 2 BBQ sauces. The regular tastes very close to me like Kraft's Honey Mustard. It's good and I really liked it, but making me think it came from possibly Kraft makes it less appealing to me. The hot BBQ sauce was totally different. It seemed to be a ketchup base with substantial heat. I couldn't handle much of it. The beans were my favorite out of the sides. They were made in the restaurant with the regular sauce. I would have liked the potato salad more if it wasn't for the celery. The cornbread was perfect and sweet. I did have to wait on sweet tea to be made and the wait for it was a little too long. They were busy so maybe no one realized it but either way, once I had my tea, it was mar-vel-ous. Pit Boss has all the workings for a special BBQ place. The ribs and pork were both phenomenal and the sides were really good. The brisket was a little disappointing and Im not quite sure about the sauce. You can find Pit Boss BBQ at 856 Virginia Ave, Hapeville, GA 30354 attached to the back of a liquor store. Parking is on primarily on the streets adjacent or you might get lucking and find space on the lot (unlikely during lunch or dinner times). This traditional pit BBQ is a staple for employees at Delta Airlines and a great place to stop after visiting the nearby Arches Brewing - which is what we did. A group of us attended one of Michelle T's and Kwame O's great BeerYEs at Arches and there's nothing to help along a beer buzz than traditional BBQ. At Pit Boss you order at the counter and they'll call your number. On this late afternoon it was pretty packed but our group still managed to find a table. I went all out and ordered a half-rack of pork ribs. While these didn't have as much smoke rind (the pink color) that I normally look for, the rub was very good and in true southern fashion they were thrown on the grill before serving to give the ribs a bit of char. I thought they were quite good - sort of a compromise between smokiness and grilled - they reminded me a bit of Fat Matt's. The half-slab was huge - complete with the little gristle bits on the ends so be aware of those. I also tried a wing - these were juicy, smokey and a bit charred like the ribs. I could eat a whole mess of these - it's a far cry from those Buffalo thingies you find at TMacs and similar. I had ice tea - mixed half-and-half and it was strong and fresh. I also tried a bit of beef brisket with collards, brunswick and corny-bread. All were quite good - I don't think anyone would find anything here to complain about. I also liked the sauce that came in bottles on the table. The beans were a bit too canned for me - go for the brunswich instead. Also I wasn't really a fan of the potato salad (but then again I'm not in general) or the mac-and-cheese. I did like the small piece of BBQ chicken I tried. Service was good with very friendly people behind the counter - the entire experience is quite good as dives go and excellent as far as BBQ goes. Yum! Finally got by here on a Sunday to check out the que. I was almost completely starving and the delicious smells of the smoker hit me immediately as I got out of the car. We were there at lunchtime but the lunch specials are only M-F. No biggie I'll def be back since work is super close. I went with my standard bbq taste tester. A half rack of ribs, beans & slaw. Oh and of course white bread! My bf got a chopped chicken sandwich that did cause a bit of order envy. My ribs were good. Like the run was on point, but they were just a teence too tough for me. Like they could've used a few more hours. Don't get me wrong the flavor was there but I they were a bit tough to pull apart, ya know?
