Restaurants are places to eat, but they also keep a connection to kitchens and people you miss. The pleasant dining room and generous patio make a good first impression. So do prices that suggest you might come back on an ordinary Tuesday. The lulu kebab was good. The pilaf and bulgur alongside it were more puzzling: properly cooked, but almost entirely without flavor. The vermicelli in the pilaf hadn't been browned, missing the toasted quality that makes it worth adding in the first place. Whatever chicken stock might have been involved was keeping a low profile. Salt seemed to have missed dinner altogether. Perhaps remembering my grandmother's cooking set the bar a little high, but wanting another forkful of rice does not seem an unreasonable expectation. The staff were friendly when they appeared, although appearances were infrequent enough that a simple dinner stretched to two hours. A large patio is a lovely thing; ample time to contemplate its dimensions is less essential.
