I'm so disappointed Pita King has closed! I've been going here for over 10 years. The food was awesome and the portions were huge. The owner (Alfredo), was such a good guy, he meant well, but tried to do everything himself. He took the orders(in person and via phone), cooked the food, packaged the food and gave you your order, then repeated. He never had help unless his teenage son was there. This might have hurt the business in the long run. There are other Gyro places around, but I promise you none of them will give you the same food and portion sizes at the cost as Pita King did. The good: The delivery was quick compared to other businesses in the area. I got the gyro plate, pita chips, fries, and and a gyro wrap. I liked the texture of the meat and the white sauce on the side was delicious. The prices were fair and the portions were large. The bad: The wrap was very messy with lots of wilted salad that was fallen/wrapped outside of the paper. The meat was salty. The fries were soggy. Ordered pickup online via their website, order processed and drove to pick it up only to find the place was closed for the day. Had to dig through their website to find the company that processes the online orders and could only find a help line for ada accessible orders which the agent was able to help and confirmed they were listed as open; however, after processing the order they shut their online ordering down. The agent was able to cancel and refund my order but the whole thing was annoying. I've been coming here for over a decade. I almost got vetoed from going here simply because my SO questioned how good a place could be in a strip mall right next to a gas station with gas pumps 25ft from the door but I'm glad I pushed for it then. Back when it was only the owner running the kitchen & register and when it was slow we would talk about him working on his pilots license. He was super affable and I felt good supporting a local business. Over the years I've watched the staff come and go and the menu change (I thought Mediterranean & Mexican food on one menu was a neat twist) and saw less & less of the owner. I was glad the restaurant made it through the pandemic when so many didn't but unfortunately I guess as a way to keep the lights on the portion sizes continue to get smaller and smaller and the prices go up it seems every time I come back. This place went from being a bi-weekly splurge to a once in every few months. Was craving a quick fix for Greek and this place hit the spot. I got the gyro that had thick, moist slices of gyro meat with lots of feta ($1 added charge) tomato, cucumber, lettuce. Yum. It's nestled away in a gas station parking lot. I hope this place gets well-deserved traction despite the kinda hidden location! The restaurant is a humble, clean establishment. Came here yesterday and the gentleman who helped me was very respectful and quick to make my food. Great customer service....no complaints there. Problem is, my Gyro wrap was super salty. It's been years since I first tried Pita king. It was and continues to be the best gyro I've ever had. There is absolutely no better place in Escondido to get a gyro. Must get with feta! It's so creamy and smooth. The gyro meat is so flavorful with the perfect char. The pita chips are excellent made from their pita bread which is great. The gyro is massive and easily 2 meals! You pretty much get a salad on top of it and when you get to the bottom of that there's a pile of gyro meat! However I fell on my cruise the week before and was not able to cook for my book club dinner so I took a chance and ordered from here using Door Dash. I ordered two chicken salads and two Gyro salads along with 4 pieces of baklava. The chicken was a lovely flavorful grilled chicken and the Gyro meat was amazing. I loved the roasted vegetables in the salad . This was a great touch. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't any of the garlic cloves that you see in the photos so I roasted some garlic of my own. I'm leery about ordering from delivery services that are not in my general neighborhood, but the food came in less time than predicted. Salad was fresh, meat hot and wonderful. It's a shame, but this formerly enjoyable place has been sold in the last couple of months and the new owner has policies and practices that are not customer oriented. For one thing it's now very unpleasant on the inside; dark and closed in with gray walls and a black ceiling, plus the windows block both the light and the view with signage. When I was there the A/C wasn't working and it was a warm day. I had planned to eat there but couldn't wait to get out. I could go on, but you get the idea. We ordered takeout from Pita King and haven't eaten here in years. My last experience the chicken was overcooked and I was not impressed. We ordered two chicken plates, a gyro combo plate, and a chicken pita sandwich. Unfortunately they gave us a gyro sandwich instead of the pit sandwich (boo) and it was very messy and greasy and falling apart. Wouldn't order again. The chicken plate was huge and had lots of bell peppers which was nice. Consider sharing meal if you're not a huge eater. Greek salad was different than I'm used to (had egg in it) and came already dressed. I didn't love the dressing and would have preferred a traditional red wine vinaigrette dressing. I'd order dressing on the side. The pita slices that came with the meal were small and on the hard side, not big and fluffy as some other places. Tzatziki was good but in a very small container. I ordered a gyro pita. Its was wrapped like a burrito not a pita sandwich which made it difficult to eat. It was a big mess so I had to get a fork. Before I even got mine the previous customer asked for a plate and fork because he couldn't eat it. The gyro was okay but the place has seemed to have gone down hill the past few years. We're big fans of their Greek food & they recently added Mexican food to their menu, which is equally as delicious! Everything is freshly grilled (we love the gyros, souvlaki, chicken skewers), the rice, fries, tzatziki (yogurt) sauce is all amazing. We tried the new Mexican food last night (carne asada fries & cheese quesadilla) and both were outstanding. Payment is easy- there's a table at the door. A friendly employee meet me at the table, took my credit card, ran the bill, handed me a huge bag...and off I went to enjoy local food. In the thick of COVID-19 quarantine, day 35 (who even knows anymore??!) - I was sick of cooking at home and craving Greek food. I got online and placed a pickup order thinking I was ordering from a place I'd been to before and enjoyed, but realized after the fact that I had instead ordered from Pita King. I was really apprehensive because I had gotten my hopes up about my favorite plate from a place I know and like, but in looking at Pita King's mostly positive recent Yelp reviews I figured it was worth trying out a new place. I was definitely caught off guard when the navigation directed me into the parking lot of a gas station, but again, I was willing to give it a chance because some of the best taco shops I've ever been to have been those little hole-in-the-wall places that you'd never look at twice. I had arrived early so I sat in the car, but could see the inside of the restaurant. The cashier was wearing a mask, but the cook in the back was not - I'm not sure what the current rules are, but it did make me uneasy. I had ordered my husband the same vegetarian combination plate, and the total was over $30. The containers were super heavy, so I was certain that although it was pricey, we had gotten a great deal. When we got home and sat down to eat, that's where it all went downhill. The contents inside the containers were sloppy - it looked like a large portion of a public school lunch. There was an "off" smell, like tomato paste and old cumin, that hit me in the face once the lid was opened. I started poking around and tasting a little bit of everything. Looks can be deceiving, right? Well, in this case they were not. I had to take another look at the menu because I have NO idea what some of the contents were. There was a suspicious pile of tomatoey slop in one corner, which tasted horrible and was the source of most of the "off" smell. The pita bread was hard and stale. The falafel was the most disappointing of all; dense, hard and cold with a gray film (resembling cooled bacon fat - see photo) on top. I LOVE a good spanakopita, but the wedge included in my meal was cold with soggy phyllo dough. The whole garlic cloves which are typically a delicious accompaniment to a meal were cold, acidic and bitter and were seemingly pulled out of a jar the fridge and thrown in the box. The tabouli at the bottom was the only remotely edible part of the meal. Considering we had to wait for our food to be finished cooking when we arrived to pick up, there is no reason everything should have been cold and soggy. The "off" smell and bad tasting food was just the cherry on top. Even my husband, who will always eat things that I won't, agreed that consuming what was in those containers would surely have put us at risk of food poisoning. We very reluctantly dumped all $30+ of food into the trash can, not a bit of it was eaten. It was the worst waste of money in a long time. I definitely won't be back. read more

Back after a few years. (I used to visit a spot in Escondido that my girls grew out of). Not much has changed. Still offer massive portions of fresh.Greek style food. Warning- you may not be able to finish just the pita or even the "regular" size plate. Everything is huge.. Even the side of fries is big enough for 3-4 people. I ordered a gyros plate and as before, it's fresh with a nice serving of roasted veggies like zucchini and bell peppers. It's topped with cloves of roasted garlic which are tasty. (It seems that they may be prepackaged and marinated in oil). I think the rice may have changed. It appears to be a short grain that clumps together rather than the long flat grain that you would typically see in Mediterranean meals. I also did not see any baklava avalable. I remember they used to have some that was done well so not sure if it's discontinued. In any case, I hope to come back next time I'm in the neighborhood! read more

Definitely the best food I've had while stopping for gas! Absolutely delicious and soft falafel! Huge patties, flopped in a pita, and topped basically with an entire dinner salad which I was very pleased with. Well worth the $10+ dollars. I remember this place being SOOOOO good. I was out running errands and needed a quick snack for the kids. I ran in to grab some pita and hummus. Ok - it was like $12 which seems pricey but this is a small business and happy to support. When I got the food home, the hummus was so gross I couldn't believe it. It honestly tasted like someone put a can of garbanzos in a blender and dumped it into the container. It had a wierd texture, no flavor, no tahini, no lemon, no garlic, nothing. Their gyro plate meal is so generous that you could get to 2 plates and feed at least 4 people. A solid find! Kind of hidden in the crappy looking gas station strip mall. We actually put off trying this place for so long based on the outward appearance. But happy to have finally given it a shot based on the great reviews we saw. Service was quick and helpful. We placed an order over the phone...they actually called me back to verify my order once we hung up, apparently they misheard something in the order and wanted to be 100% sure, which is much appreciated so that our order wasn't messed up.
