The old theater on Sunset has been transformed into a pizzeria--one of several reinventions over time--but this latest version seems to be a real hit with locals. It's a great spot to hang out and watch sports, with plenty of tables and TVs throughout. The food is flavorful, and the full bar is a nice bonus. If I still lived nearby, this would definitely be my go-to for happy hour. Their $10 pizza and wings special is a solid deal for the portion size. I went to this pizza place with some of my coworkers, but I was never planning to sit down and eat with the group because I had to leave right away to take care of my son. I hadn't sat down, ordered anything, or received any table service. I simply wanted to place a separate to-go order before leaving. One of the servers told me that because I had walked in with the group, they would still charge me a 20% service fee on my to-go order. That honestly made no sense to me. I wasn't dining with the group and wasn't receiving any table service. What made the experience even worse was the way the server spoke to me about it. The attitude was unnecessarily rude and made the whole interaction very unpleasant. Maybe the pizza is good, but after being treated like this, I don't think I'll ever come back. I loved Mohawk Bend so I was a lil sour when this pizza place popped up since it seemed more generic than my old local favorite. I'd not been super motivated to try it but I walked by the other day and saw they have happy hour, which includes $10 cocktails, $10 food items, plus $6 beers. Kind of an offer you can't refuse. My friend and I showed up around 5p on a weeknight, and it's a super casual counter service atmosphere, so we ordered at the bar and took seats outside. I ended up being pleasantly surprised that they didn't completely gut the interior and kept a lot of the architecture that made the previous restaurant so lovely. There's also a good amount of outdoor seating, and it's quite comfortable. We got a gluten-free Honey Bear pizza, linguine bolognese and a little gem salad. The portions were generous, which for $10 an item was surprising. The bolognese got a thumbs up from my friend, but the salad started wilting pretty quickly and maybe was a bit overdressed. The flavors of my pizza were tasty but the crust was crispy around the edges and super soggy on the bottom. Gluten-free crust is so tricky, and they might need to experiment with other preparations to get it right. It's a very sports-oriented setup, with a handful of TVs in the bar area, but there is a back dining room for a more upscale vibe. This is a sad review to write. Pitfire was a miss all night long. Overall everything except the pizza was lacking flavor and they got our order wrong and everything came out cold besides the pizza. The Honeybear pizza was just as great as everyone says. One of my favorite pizzzas so far! Mushroom pasta - this had 0 seasoning on it. It was truly bizarre. We had to add a ton of salt and pepper and Parmesan to liven it up. Trio of sides - they gave us sweet potatoes that we didn't order which is the one thing I don't really eat so my friend ate them all, he said they weren't that good, they were having an off night. The snap peas were ok in their sauce. And I can't remember the other green that we had at this point, I think a broccoli, but obviously it didn't stand out since this was just a week ago. They have a great beer selection though. Definitely come for just the beer and pizza. That's their strong suit. You order at the counter and they bring your dishes to you. I was notified my previous review from long ago was removed by Yelp's Pearl Clutcher Brigade because someone's tender feelings were bruised reading it. Oh, how terrible! I can't say what it was that must have caused the grievous psychic injury because that would, again, lead to the clutching of more pearls and the tsking of more tsks, but I will rephrase things very succinctly: Mohawk Bend became a place I stopped patronizing because their offerings became increasingly unappealing. I did not find their menu -- which went from food most of the population eats like meat and dairy to one consisting largely of cauliflower and tofu and nut cheeses -- remotely appetizing, and I suspect the menu change was the reason that Mohawk Bend went out of business. Pitfire Pizza uses meat and dairy, ingredients which are the integral to pizza and Italian-American cuisine in general, abundantly in its dishes, making its menu is much more appealing than Mohawk Bend. It is more successful on pretty much every count, and I do not miss the previous ownership or its menu one smidgen. No set of beliefs are named or criticized, no objectionable terms are being used, and no unnecessarily graphic descriptions of cauliflower, tofu, or nut cheeses were included. read more

This was my first time at Pitfire, having come to Mohawk bend for years. I knew they still had buffalo cauliflower on the menu, plus a separate vegan selection, so I gave it a go. Pros: the pizza I got was very good. It was the honey bear (made vegan) and was a nice combination of savory and sweet. The space itself is also still quite nice--plenty of room (especially these days.) Cons: the buffalo cauliflower my partner and I got was full of small tiny crumb-like bits of cauliflower. It must have been the last of a batch because our friends across the table got more regular sized cauliflower. Unfortunately, the small pieces made it really difficult to dip. And further, the dip was plain ranch (not the old school blue cheese style, sigh.) I would go back with a mixed group, but given all the vegan options out there today the ones here aren't 100% compelling. Came here on a Tuesday around 9:15 pm. We got a meter on Sunset luckily just around the corner. The employee taking our order was super friendly. Me and my boyfriend decided to get the garlic ginger boneless chicken wings and the honey bear while my friends got the Zoe's pepperoni and some wine. We were shocked at the happy hour menu prices which are so very cheap! Unfortunately wouldn't be able to make it often because it's from 2-5:30 pm on weekdays, but will definitely try since there's a location close to where I work and live. The inside is super cool, probably cooler than other locations. It has retro style furniture and the back has a huge room that looks like it goes outside (but doesn't) with a fireplace. It's such a big space overall! They also had a Photo Booth where you have to wait 5 minutes for it to print because it uses real film. Super cute but you only get one photo strip. All of the employees were friendly. We got our food quickly and both the wings and pizza were delicious! This is a great spot for groups or date! After the departure of the beloved Mohawk Bend, the news that the space it occupied was going to be filled by Pitfire Pizza was a relief. The food is always good here even if the parking has much to be desired (not their fault, it's Echo Park). What makes it an extra special place are the people. On my last visit, Caitlin and Steve took great care of me. The beer selection is varied and you can always find something to your liking. The one thing that is puzzling and unfortunately it's been ongoing is their faulty air conditioning system. Apparently it's been broken for months. I've been there and generally it hasn't been so bad but the recent hot weather has made it quite uncomfortable. The last time I was there on August 11th., the place was hardly occupied. We came in for the baseball game and ordered our food and drinks but it was very uncomfortable. I did ask about it and the staff were kind and understood without making a big deal out of it (good company employees) but the owners need to fix this. We saw some people come in and complain about the heat and left. Please fix the AC because even though they didn't say anything, the staff can feel the heat and the lack of customers can affect their jobs. read more

Came to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends and though the location was fairly empty we still made reservations so they were aware of the amount of people coming in. It's a pretty spacious space in a very known area + location as what I'm told was Mohawk bend. We were dining around 8pm so parking wasn't as difficult but if it earlier than that. It would have been a different story. We parked on street meters but after 8 is free so scored on that as well. We were seated in a nice cozy area where they had the fireplace, since we sat right next to it. It did get warm but it wasn't as bad. Server was friendly but you do have to order your food upfront/pay and they will bring to you. You What was ordered were different side dishes and pizzas for the table to share and at the end they surprised me with their sundae, which was pretty delicious. The best part of this place is that they have a photobooth. Any place with a Photo Booth makes it my fav place already for big points for that. If you've visited other pitfires and like it. Just left this place and I must say it was a terrible experience. My boyfriend and I have ordered delivery many times so thought it would be even better at the location. There are no waiters here, you grab a menu and seat yourself, then order at the bar. My bf placed our order (and tipped). The food runner, some guy with a ponytail, gave us attitude from the jump as if we were inconveniencing him. After ordering, said runner brought us the wrong order, then went back to the kitchen to figure out the correct table. Our pizzas came out and they looked great, but one bite into mine and the crust was soft/gummy. I ordered a gluten free crust, which sometime may need longer to cook. My bf asked the table runner if our pizzas could be put back in the oven a bit longer as mine was gummy and his wasn't hot. The guy grabbed them, took a step, then turned around and put mine back on the table and said, "this one we can't because there's a bite taken out" - without even making eye contact and turned around and walked away. My bf went to the kitchen to explain, and the guy in the kitchen was very friendly and said no problem, then said he needed to ask, the the manager objected and said no they couldn't reheat it, that they could only make a new one entirely. So my bf said "ok then make a new one". The manager walked away while he was talking, came back to our table to begrudgingly get the pizza they were going to remake. The pizza came about 10 min later and honestly tasted nothing like the one we get when we order delivery. It's a Friday night at 8pm and the place was 80% empty. Hard to understand why they were so unaccommodating. We thought the vibe of the place was nice, with the fire pits and low lighting, but the staff made it so uncomfortable that we were there less than 45 min. They have a great happy hour menu, game day deals for Dodger games, a HUGE space that's great for large groups and overall just really good food that includes vegan options. You literally can't go wrong here. Food -- 10/10. Sooooo yummy and I was really happy that they have a good selection of vegan options. I loved the vegan honey bear pizza and buffalo cauliflower wings! Aside from that, I also loved the elote-style brussels sprouts (I know, it sounds weird but they were super good, trust me) Price -- 10/10. I fell for this restaurant because it has a similar name to a local pizzeria, PITFIRE ARTISAN PIZZA, which has one more word than this one. The latter is one of my favorites. This pizzeria has a half-open kitchen where you can watch them make the pizzas. The oven is typically pitfire-shaped but gas-driven, which makes for less flavor than a wood-burning pitfire. We went there around 4 p.m. after a trip from La Brea and happened to catch the happy hour: $10 for one of most of their pizzas and $6 for a draft beer. The price was cheap, and the beer was very good. We had THREE PHILOSOPHERS and Figueroa Mountain Light Lager; both beers were good. Regarding the food: Boneless Wings I had never had boneless wings before--interesting? The boneless wings were really tender and juicy, with a mild garlic ginger dipping sauce that balanced very well. I was curious about the texture of the boneless wings and guessed they weren't real wings, but my friend Danny didn't agree. We asked the waiter, and he told us they were chicken wings with the bones removed. Later on, I did some research and found that the culinary term "boneless wings" actually refers to chicken breasts. Anyway, the boneless wings were hot, crispy, and tender. I give them 9/10. Margherita Pizza Sadly, the most anticipated item was the worst. It was plain and boring--you couldn't taste the tomato or the wheat, and it didn't even have a sour flavor. We were all surprised that they could make a Margherita pizza so tasteless. A Margherita pizza is so easy to make with good cheese, good tomatoes, and good flour, but it seemed this pizza had none of those. Sorry, 0/10. Honey Bear Pizza This pizza was better than the Margherita one, but still not a good pizza. I'd rate it 5/10. Little Gem Caesar Salad Acceptable, but nothing special. My children often get excited over Chef Di Giorno at home, but when I tell them that we are leaving the homestead to enjoy pizza at a different location such as Pitfire, the crowd goes wild! Tonight, my daughter said, "Can we please have that pizza that is burnt and fresh at the same time?" How could I not oblige her every time we go we order the Honeybear, the little gem salad, a side of wings, and the charred brussels sprouts, and it fills up the whole family for a very reasonable price. The only drawback I might mention is that it takes longer to get the drinks than it does to get the food. Because of their ordering service where you have to order in two different locations in the restaurant. But all that aside, the eats are good and the drinks are good when they actually come. I was not sure about the pizza, a little nervous, but this place does not disappoint, the food is outstanding! The crust... wow!!!! The crust is amazing for a this crust! Me and friends came in 15 mins before close and they still sat us and let us dine in. The Homey Bear was definitely the stand out. It comes with ricotta mozzarella provolone and sausage. It comes with hot honey and it's nothing short of amazing so many flavors that all coincide perfectly together. The sausage party is also good the flavors aren't as flamboyant as the honey bear but just as tasty in a different way. The cheese knots were awesome they come with a side of marina sauce and has mozzarella and Parmesan cheese sprinkled all over it. The they are really good highly recommended. read more

It's a great time here! This is a great place to bring a large group of friends. Or even a small group of friends or date. There's a $5 photobooth that will give you one photo strip with 4 pics. It'll develop after 5 minutes so you'd need to come back. You order the food and drinks at the register area. They'll serve the food to your table. On Tue March 19 we came in for a party of 14 LOL no heads up, rsvp or anything. It was for a birthday it was a Tuesday, so thought maybe it wouldn't be busy and sure enough it wasn't! I did come about a half hr earlier than I told my friends just in case I had to scope out for a new area, but the hostess was amazing- she was like omg yes we have so much space! She just checked with the manager to make sure we were good to go to sit at the long middle table and and that worked out really well. Our food came promptly and the drinks were great! I was also worried that we'd pay as a whole table under one check (yikes) but they conveniently had us just pay/order at the counter as each of us was ready. Thank you to all the staff there! You all that were working that day were champs- thanks for taking care of us and my partner during his special day!! read more
