My boyfriend and I were on vacation this weekend and the lady that owned the beach house that we stayed at recommended that we try Pixi's Deli. I came here because two people told me they have "the best sandwiches". I looked on the reviews and the French toast looked really good. The parking for this place is near the beach and other restaurants. On the beach you can have campfires and there's also bathrooms there. So when we came here they were already starting to close an hour and a half before closing time. I had asked about the French toast and the lady said it was only before noon. Then I had asked about a sandwich and she said that we can only order from the first sandwich "surf board". So I try to order and she keeps telling me that they're out of this and they're out of that and that I can order the club. So I said that's fine I'll go ahead and order that. I had asked if they have any kids sandwiches and she said no. I asked if I can just get a piece of bread with turkey meat in it and she said no that they couldn't do that. The girl behind her said that the club sandwich had three pieces of bread and I had asked if we could take the middle piece and some of the turkey meat. That it wouldn't need mayonnaise or anything on it just the bread and turkey meat. The lady could not understand or get what I was saying at all and even the girl was trying to explain to her what I meant by just using two pieces of bread for the sandwich and the extra piece would be for my daughter's sandwich. I told her it would be the same thing if I took the bread and turkey from the middle of the sandwich and she still did not understand what I meant. The girl understood exactly what I meant so I don't know why this lady couldn't understand anything. So we ordered the club sandwich, And the tritip sandwich since the girl told us they still have the meat. We also got a rootbeer soda "bundaburg"which tasted like cough syrup and had 47 g of sugar. For two sandwiches and a drink cost $30. I really wish that we would've went to Togos instead because they're always good. In the club sandwich we pretty much ate the bacon and threw the rest of the sandwich away. The tritip had no flavor even with the barbecue sauce that tasted like ketchup mixed with vinegar. Talk about a waste of money. I wouldn't come back here nor would I recommend it. Maybe it was a bad experience since they were rushing and trying to get out of there and hour and a half early or it might've been something else. Who knows. read more

So here's the thing. If you are at the beach near Sea Cliff and hankerin' for some good food, then go to Pixie. You will come away with a good lunch, run in a very mom-and-pop style. Some may complain about the service because you order at a counter and may feel rushed. Some may be perturbed that they ran out of the sandwich that you wanted (one reason for 3 stars). Some may not like the parking situation or the ambiance (not truly on the beach). The indoor stools are interesting and the no-frills outdoor seating is enjoyable, somewhat picturesque and serene). Since they changed owners many years back, my new go to is the Southwest chicken sandwich and the Philly Cheese-steak. Back in the dinosaur era, my go-to used to be the tri-tip sandwich. read more

Nice little sandwich shop right next to the beach. I like going here for lunch when I head out to the beach. They have a good range of food here (Sandwiches, Burritos, Ice cream, and coffee). Nice outdoor patio to sit and enjoy the beach weather. The guys who run it are very nice and all the food here is pretty good. If you want a quick bite to eat before heading out to the beach, this place is definitely a good place to stop. Only problem is that on weekends, it is nearly impossible to find parking. read more

This is a great little deli with an ocean view. I had the tuna sandwich and it was one of the best I've ever had! My friend had the club sandwich, it looked delicious and he said it was very tasty! Rio del Mar beach is fun and Pixie Deli is a small friendly family owned place great fo having a bite and chilling out. The seating is mostly outside under unbrellas and we especially love going there when we want to beat the heat. For a small place, they take their meats seriously. I usually get sandwiches and my fav is the BLT. The bread is made fresh and the bacon is crazy thick cut and slow cooked outside, but everything that i've had is good. Had the "wild Salmon" sandwich. Got it home and right away the smell was as bad as it tasted. I was able to stomached only half the sandwich because I was hungry. Finally after consideration I threw the other half away with the thought "great I'll probably get food poisoning". I was still belching up the fowl smell/taste hours later. I wanted to like this place so much. Ordered a turkey sandwich. Had two choices for bread. Wheat or sourdough. Sourdough of course! My husband ordered the French dip. With no drinks, the total was $22.50. So I thought it was going to be amazing. Those are gourmet prices. I got my sandwich and the bread was cold and very dense. Two pieces of turkey and a couple of onions. I was so disappointed. Subway is way better. So I thought that I would try a bite of the French Dip. But saw my husbands face and changed my mind. He said it was the worst French Dip he had ever had. The meat looked terrible. The couple next to us asked if our food was good. We told them our honest feedback. We asked how their Southwest chicken sandwich was. The wife said it was "edible". Now my husband doesn't let any food go to waste. But he left the other half of his sandwich at home today. That tells me everything. My other half went in the garbage. Where his is going now. Go to deluxe before coming to the beach. Now those sandwiches are gourmet and probably cheaper! Wish I could give ZERO stars. Rudest cashier (I think the owner?, an older asian woman) I have ever had in my entire life... BY FAR. At one point there was a minor discrepancy with the order and she blamed me in a rude manor, and I said oh you are right, the customer is always wrong! Wow. What an inhospitable, rude woman. Then It took over 20 minutes for one sandwich to come out, when one was done in 5 and i had seen everyone in front of me already leave. When I asked what was happening she told me to stop being to impatient and rude! Then asked if I wanted to cancel the order! What!. Wow...just wow. I wanted to punch her in the face and spit all over her she was that rude (Its hard to detail the experience and what was sad)! Luckily she yelled at a worker in the back to speed up my order and it was ready in 2 minutes. Never in my life coming here again. Other annoyances: - No fan inside, which is VERY hot. It was actually not even that hot outside, but very hot inside. - The cashier (I think the owner?) kept running around the back of the restaurant slowing down the line considerably. Since it is REALLY hot in there, it stinks having to wait so long.! One guy would sometimes take orders, but only the owner/cashier was able to operate the cash register. Unfortunate since she was rarely there and needed someone else to be a dedicated cashier. They REALLY needed a dedicated cashier... probably would have made the place run smoother and have a happier staff! - Messed up my order Food: - No rye for the Reuban at 1pm! nice blackboard special. I Live in Aptos. I went in there after a long walk with my 3 grand kids under 6. I want to teach them patience so we waited patiently in a long line. I was distracted and did not realize that I first needed to gather my drinks from drink coolers. The middle aged Italian (guessing) man at the counter rolled his eyes, threw down his pen and told me he would 'wait for me' :-/ I was embarrassed and the line immediately became impatient with me. Considering your choices, Pixie Deli should have enough variety for everyone in your group to find something to eat. I had the California Club and found the crispy bacon pieces perfectly accented the turkey, avocado and cheese. Hubby ordered the tri-tip his way: with only BBQ sauce and tomato slices on a French roll. It was very good! The deli is stocked with all kinds of beverages and sides, including chips, candy, and their own version of deviled eggs (no mayo that I could detect and relish for a light sweetness and crunch). You'll find seating outdoors under the umbrellas with a view across the parking lot next door to the water, as well as a few seats up close to the building where we sat for more shelter from the wind. If you're really wimpy you can sit inside at a number of tables. 3.5 stars, but marking off 4 instead of 3 to help support the locals! read more

The sandwiches are mediocre at best and definitely not worth $9 or more. The pros are the convenience and outdoor seating. The only food item I would recommend is the burger and fries. Wow, this place has really gone downhill. My wife ordered us 2 burritos yesterday, almost $20, after driving home 25 miles, realized both orders were wrong. Immediately called them and they said they would be happy to give us 2 breakfast burritos on the house, next visit. Today they gave my wife a hard time, yelled at her and said she gets what she gets as in not the 2 original burritos we were promised. We did not order 2 egg and cheese burritos, they had alof of toppings which brings the price way up. After telling us on the phone, we should come by next time for the free burritos, the next day. They are saying we should have drove back 25 miles each way to get it resolved then. We were never told that the previous day. Note that i have been coming here for years and the food is really not what is used to be, i'm going to pass from now on. I even spoke with the owner who stood behind this rude behavior. When I moved back to Santa Cruz I was told this was the best place for breakfast burritos by my real estate agent. My husband and I are breakfast burrito-aholics and so we thought we would try them. Wow they are huge. The nice thing is that you get to chose what goes inside. They are a little pricey at 7 buck s pop but they are huge and you might be able to take half home pus it is a great place to stop if your coming back from a run on the beach with your dog. It is literally ten steps from the beach. Watch out though because it can get packed at breakfast time on the weekends. read more

The location is excellent, they cold beverages are a nice treat but the food is simply underwhelming. The service is nothing special and the employees do not seem happy. For the reviews stating this is the best breakfast burrito in Santa Cruz County. NO. Absolutely no. Came here with high hopes, was left unsatisfied. The setup itself is not that friendly, with a very difficult to read menu board, high prices, and insincere staff. When filling out my burrito form, i was pretty excited, i had checked off five things immediately before I realized that oh, they charge by ingredient here. So OK, $9 for a breakfast burrito, with chorizo, cheese, and something which I forget, because there was barely any of it in there, maybe green chili? This burrito had no taste. Nothing was seasoned. Yes I ordered chorizo, no, I did not taste any chorizo. The egg was not salted, cheese was ok. It was a large burrito and hot, and I ate it all, but it was just heavy in my stomach, and there was not much enjoyment going down. To top it off I had to ask the young lady at the counter for salsa and sour cream for my to go order. No offer. Super excited to taste a great breakfast burrito, did not deliver on that promise. I took my family to Aptos and then down to Pacific Grove just to get out and do something. My daughter's birthday was this weekend so I felt we had to do something special. We walked along the (closed) beach area to the restraurant area and found Pixie Deli. The place looks so cool and is likely a great place to grab a beer and a bite on a hot day. The workers were friendly and there was no line when we arrived. There are five of us so I ordered 5 sandwiches and grabbed 5 drinks from the cooler. Then we sat outside on the sidewalk for 40 minutes. We drank our drinks and watched about 6 other customers walk in, order a sandwich, receive their sandwich and then leave. Finally, I walked in a questioned where our order was. They quickly put our items in a bag and apologized for the long wait. Our order total was $80 (included a bag of chips). We took the rest of our drinks, chips and the sandwiches and sat at some of the benches near the beach to eat. The food was mediocre at best. The burger meat tasted like 10 years of freezer burn. They also made it totally different than how we ordered, putting thousand island dressing even though we asked them not to. The calamari sandwich was cold and the philly cheese steak had almost no cheese and some of the worst tasting meat I'd ever had.. The teriyaki chicken sandwich was very good. My wife had a grilled chicken sandwich, which was average. When we ordered, I had planned to come back and buy some ice cream sandwiches for everyone after eating. The outdoor seating looks good, the inside looks like it can get a little cramped. I chose to take my food to go. I bought what I believe was called the california club sandwich, and a philly cheese-steak. I had half of each and were both very delicious, my friend thought so too. I like the fact that the staff is bilingual and very friendly. I also had some of their Jalapeños you have to ask for them though. Its right across the beach too. Love this place! Its an easy walk from the Sea Cliff neighborhood, a block up from Rio del Mar beach. Great outside seating or inside if its foggy. The staff are amazingly friendly and will make pretty much anything to order. The french toast is awesome! Perfectly cooked, light and fluffy. As an avocado lover, my favorite lunch item is the Catalina sandwich; jack cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion, may and mustard on sprouted wheat.. yum! Also the BLT is bacon heaven and the meatloaf sandwich is delish! The drink selection is huge and on summer days the gelatto comes in clutch. read more
