When you survey the beaches within reach of the peninsula, you'll find all of them have some type of drawback. Kelly State Beach? Hard to park. Poplar? No food. Santa Cruz Boardwalk? So crowded... Yeah, when I load up the Family Truckster with the ocean in mind, we often pick Rio Del Mar simply because it's not too crowded, the sea is a little warmer than HMB, it has usable bathrooms, and the businesses within walking distance, most specifically Pixie Deli, are great. The banner says, "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Shorts, No Problem!" Already a winner in my mind. Then you go inside and it's as clean as you can expect a beach joint to be, not to mention spacious with a good selection of beer (many varieties of the popular local brews), snacks, and a big screen with the game on. The deli counter isn't too big, but they have a massive sandwich menu with both hot and cold sandwich selections. The service was awesome; friendly, fast, and they explain your options. The sandwich meat was top notch with thick, moist, juicy slices of meat, fresh vegetables and a variety of bread. The Wife had a wrap that she loved and the kids had PB&J. The price was within expectations, especially for a beach joint. Add that and just the overall super-cool vibe for the relaxed part of Santa Cruz and you got a place that will have a lot of my money every time I save a little weight in the beach wagon by buying our lunch and drinks on-site. read more

We loved the grilled cheese and pesto chicken sandwich. They toast the French roll to crunchy splendor. Service was fairly fast and they have a nice selection of beers and kombuchas, teas, and sodas. Hate to say it. They use to have a killer calamari sandwich. Now, new owners and I was served a calamari sandwich which looked like the calamari was left in the deep fry overnight. I took a bite and filed in the circular file. The steak was GREY and the fat that fried it was black! Not going back anytime soon. Maybe they thought I was a tourist and wouldn't be coming back. Well, I'm not a tourist but I still won't be coming back. They should call their sandwich "The $10 Tomane filet" Good way to make your new business fail. Quite possibly the best tri-tip sandwich within 100 miles (I suspect it is grilled daily and the bread (I'm a sourdough guy) is always so fresh). Our plan was to spend the day on the beach, but we waited so long we hardly had any time. I recommend coming in the morning, and not on a weekend. Saturday afternoon was a disaster. Perfect place to pick up picnic food for the beach. We had the ruben & cheesesteak sandwiches and both were pretty good. My wait was unusually long as I watched people after me get their food so I don't know what happened there. I had to ask my person who took my order to check for my sandwiches otherwise I'm not sure how long they would have let me stand there without noticing the place was emptying out but I was still waiting. A regular told me the lines can get really long during lunch hour and especially weekends. Due to the fact that everyone working was so nice, I would probably come back when I'm down here visiting but will speak up earlier if my lunch order gets passed. I LOVE Pixie Deli. This is one of those places that makes you want to sell everything you own and buy a place by the beach. Pixie Deli is right on the beach in Rio Del Mar, which means it's the perfect place to come enjoy both great scenery and great food. The owners are incredibly friendly and they do a great job connecting with their customers. There is even a bowl of fresh water outside for your dog to drink. Favorites: Southwest shredded chicken sandwich: I take sandwiches very seriously, and this is one of my top 5 favorites of all time. It's incredibly simple and absolutely delicious. They take shredded chicken and a fresh peppery sauce and put it between a perfect fresh french roll. The entire sandwich is hot and fresh, the bread tastes like it just came out of the oven. This sandwich is worth the trip by itself! Pesto shredded chicken sandwich: Same as above except with a pesto sauce instead of peppery southwest sauce, just as delicious. Not only does Pixie Deli have great food, they have one of the best patio eating areas around. The tables outside have great views of the beach and are perfect for enjoying the sun during the summer. Best of all Pixie has a great selection of beers that you can bring out to their patio area and drink. Pixie Deli is everything a great family deli should be. The pixie deli was pretty good for a first timer. The food was fresh and fairly fast for a Sunday afternoon. Semi over priced. Unfortunately for my friend her experience wasn't as good that day. She ordered a pesto mayo chicken sandwich not knowing the sandwich had ONLY pesto and mayo and cut up chicken bits (yuck). She returned it and asked for the turkey club expecting to receive the same thing as I bought (in the photo attached). When she received the sandwich it wasn't toasted nor the same size! Automatically the owner began yelling "it's the same thing, same thing". Heard this place was under new ownership so we had to try it out. I liked the simplicity of the breakfast menu. Instead of a bunch of different burritos to choose from it your build it you way. Good selection of meats and vegetables plus potatoes to choose from. Burrito was the right size and they do not skimp on the fillings, great flavor. Will definitely come back to try the lunch. The Pixie Deli is a fantastic place to grab a sandwich! My first experience here was after a couple hours of surfing and I was starving. My friend took me here telling me that they have huge sandwiches that are to die for. When we arrived it seemed like a little dive (which usually means great food already) and I ordered the California BLT. The club was amazing and was very very filling. The have a variety of different types of sandwiches, hamburgers and burritos which i have not gotten to try but if it is anything like the club than they too will not disappoint.
