We knew Pizzalo can be crowded, so my daughter and I came at 5:30PM on a Sat night and we got a table outdoors with our dog within 5 minutes. The hostess was welcoming and we were happy to get a table so quickly. 1 star for having an outdoor patio that is pleasant, not the best aesthetics nor much effort into camaflouging the unsightly areas surrounding the patio. Seats are hard metal and quite uncomfortable. I would bring a cushion for elderly diners. 2 large dining tables that they have different groups share, so was a bit surprising since we can hear each others' conversations. But at least they had outdoor space. We ordered the honey and pepperoni pizza that was $28 for what I would call a single serving pizza. The most expensive for the size pizza i've ever had. I ate only 2 small-med sized slices so that my growing daughter can eat 6. We also shared a salad that contained beets, greens, and green goddess dressing that cost $19 to my recollection. Pizza was very tasty but crust bottom had too much burnt flour and it tasted bitter. It's also carcinogenic to eat burnt food. I love green goddess dressing and a good recipe is delicious but this one tasted like it was out of a bottle or the recipe was awful, making it too acidic and lacked the herb and creamy flavor I've experienced making at home. We ordered no drinks. The total came to nearly $60 with no drinks so we didn't order a 2nd pizza although I knew she wanted to try another one.. but for $35+ with tax and tip for a single serving pizza, I couldn't do it. The bill was nearly $75 for one single serving pizza and a small sized salad that was shared by the 2 of us. I would never go back. There are just too many good pizza places. I make only organic pizza so I appreciate that they source from sustainably grown produce, and I give them 1 start for that. Also, they gave us the wrong bill that was 2x the amount of food & drinks we ordered and that should not have happened. No apologies... if I had done that, I'd be so embarrassed and would have apologized profusely to the customer. What's also tacky is that they have set up an electronic payment at the table (convenient and fast for all) but they ask for a minimum of 20%,, 25% or 30% tip! I gave a custom tip of 15% of the subtotal, not the taxed total of the inflated price. I understand that everyone needs to make a living.. but pizza is very cheap to make (even organic at home) and I'm guessing that the proprietor makes off quite well. read more

We love this place. Frequenting for years. Bf is a chef. Biggest complaint has to be the portions of salads specifically. Another reason for the three stars is the sand in the greens. Nothing but good things to say about the food here... ordered the burrata appetizer which was so flavorful and creamy and tangy all at the same time. Next got the potato pizza and WOW I am more amazed but the texture of the pizza dough and how crisp than the actual toppings; their wood-fired oven cooked the pizza to absolute perfection. Also got a size of the Brussel sprouts and broccoli- I am a big fan of Brussel sprouts and these ones definitely hit the spot, SO crunchy and crispy. For dessert, definitely grab the pear galette- it comes with olive oil and sea salt which sounds like a weird combination but it w WORKS!! Costco Pizza is good enough and better than having to deal with really inattentive service. It seems the problem is they hire young kids and don't train them. We went next door to Roses for a drink and the Pizzaiolo bar to buy some time. The Hostess and waiter were friendly and very helpful with suggestions. I really enjoy Pizzaiolo, and feel it offers something you don't see often. If you come in the weekday mornings for breakfast (or coffee) you can see the whole food making process going on all around you, from the open kitchen, down to some bread and pasta making spilling out into the back. You really have the feeling of being part of the kitchen production as you look up from your laptop. I'm a pretty big fan of their warm amaranth porridge, which comes either savory or sweet. The savory version incorporates an egg, cheese and greens, and the sweet version has fresh strawberries, roasted hazelnuts and maple syrup. Both are simple, but delicious. The coffee here is properly strong, and the baked goods are excellent, from savory tarts to morning buns. I've come once for dinner, and their back patio that faces out towards Temescal Alley is a great option in the summertime. The wood fired pizza they pull out of the pizza oven is delicious. If you do stop here for dinner, make sure to check out the independent shops back in the alley. read more

I ate here about 10 years ago. The pizza was good and the service was fine. I are here tonight and the service was awful. It took a while for the waitress to get our drink order. The wine finally came and she proceeded to ignore us. We had to wave to get her attention. She come back and asked us what we needed. We stated that we wanted to order our food and requested water. The pizza took a very long time to come out. We waved again to our waitress and she just ignored us. The bus staff saw us and told the waitress. She finally had to come and talk to us. This waitress was also talking and hugging another customer at a table near us. You need to get rid of wait staff that don't care about their customers. This is my go to spot for date night in Temescal. I absolutely love the outdoor ambience, the pizza, and the salads! Everything is fresh and delicious. They make it so cozy and it's perfect for new parents as well! Bring your baby, there is plenty of space to enjoy outside. We love coming here and highly recommend it to everyone. We ordered dinner from Pizzaiolo for a super 2020 reason: we needed milk! Seems like many places that used to sell cartons of milk along with other food have stopped doing that, but not Pizzaiolo, so, first, props for that. The panzanella salad was a highlight. It was a nice twist to see avocado in it, and the flavors and textures were on point. The fried chicken had good texture and flavor and held up well in the takeout format. It came on a plentiful bed of succotash, and despite being listed with the appetizers, was more than a meal by itself. The pizza was fine, but probably the least exciting thing in the order. They also sell other useful pantry supplies for living your best life at home, including Verve coffee beans and burrata. I also appreciate that all the takeout boxes were compostable. Our server Gilbert asked if we are open to eating anything in which we said yes, I'm so so glad we did... sesame bread was a great start following a citrus salad, I loved everything so far and craving that salad now just writing this lol.. next came a meat tartar, never in my life have I enjoyed a dish as much as this one! I was practically licking the plate afterwards but just my luck before the thought became an action our next dish arrived, crab and boy were the flavors on point. The ambience was perfect while we waited for our next surprise dish and within no time it had arrived, spaghetti with onions and we thought meat so I ate it and once the server Gilbert came to ask how it was he revealed it was mushroom.. omg I hate mushrooms, I couldn't believe how delicious it was and having no idea it was mushrooms I ate the entire dish this was the first time since I was 5 years old I ate mushrooms and was flabbergasted. Finally the desert, the best ending to an amazing experience dinning out I just didn't want this night to end, at this point wouldn't have cared if it was a $5 meal or $500000 meal because it was all worth it. Very overrated and over priced. We got the pepperoni pizza with spicy honey and the crust was soggy. The service was subpar. The waiter was not friendly at all. I am pregnant and can eat prosciutto. I asked if he could substitute something else in the appetizer that is focaccia, burrata, and prosciutto and he coldly said no and still charged us $24 for two pieces of bread and burrata. Service/Operations: My friend and I came here at 10ish on a Thursday Morning. We walked inside and approached the counter so that we can order. Yes, that's kind of their set up (not sure how it is in the evening yet, I'll find out when I get back). But yes, you order to the counter right away, then you find a vacant table and you can basically sit anywhere. They'll call your name as a signal that you should get your food now, it's waiting on the counter. Since we ordered several items, we had to go back and forth several times. It's very much a self-service, which is fine. I didn't like how snobby some of the staff were though. On to the foods! - I really ordered a 9-Grain Amaranth Porridge "with butter, hazelnuts, maple syrup & seasonal fruit" but they gave me a 9-Grain Amaranth Porridge "with a farm egg, braised greens, & grana" instead. ($5 difference) But I didn't really mind their mistake. The food tasted good! - We ordered a Toast (because they proudly acclaim it as housemade) with avocado and olive oil. It was also good. - We topped it off with some basic breakfast items like a cup of warm mocha, a ginger cookie, and a mini hole donut. I'll come back, the food is good! So glad I live near this place! My friends and I split the mushroom, the potatoes, and the corn pizzas. I think the corn seemed to be a big winner amongst the group but all were very delicious. I hate HATE mushrooms but had to admit that pizza was tasty though I only accepted a single bite. I'm a sucker for a potato pizza and this was definitely one of the best I've ever had. Food here was actually really good. We stumbled upon here on a random night because we heard about them on the radio. We were seated immediately. Knocked off 2 stars due to service. I can tell the servers here were TRYING really hard, however, we specifically did not seem like a priority to them. It took quite some time to get our order in bc our waiter was having a long casual conversation with the table behind us. We also noticed when the gentleman next to us got his pizza they asked if he wanted chili flakes, but when the same server gave us our food, he just set it down and walked away. Had to flag him down. Food was great but the service did not seem consistent between all tables. Street parking, and it's very dim inside. They tried to set an ambiance but it fell short. It's because employees are NOT following recommended state, county and city guidelines during this COVID-19 Pandemic reopening. I've been on a pizza kick lately and ordered takeout from Pizzaiolo. The rapini and homemade sausage pizza lived up to the great reviews! The flavor was vibrant and nice and garlicky. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. I also ordered a broccoli and brussel sprout appetizer. The portion size was a bit small for the price, but they were perfectly cooked and the toasted breadcrumbs were delicious. Pizzaiolo is being very intentional about covid which I appreciate! Looking for a cute date night spot? Look no further!! There's definitely a pizza (or other dish) for everyone here - they have tons of different choices and they are all delicious. They have a variety of different beer, wine, and craft cocktails to choose from. Never leave here without trying one of their delicious desserts - about a year ago I had a rhubarb tort and I still haven't stopped thinking about it. Pizza had a nice and chewy dough, very tasty. The pizza was surprisingly not spicy for a pizza that comes with spicy honey and jalepenos. But what are you gonna do, it's hard to actually get something spicy around these parts. We really enjoyed the rigatoni, nice and thick, also chewy, the bolognese was flavorful as was the sauz. Tips This place is a madhouse on the weekends especially at night before dinner. I really enjoyed this place! We came here to celebrate my dad's 65th birthday, and in classic-family-hangout-fashion, everything on our end was very last minute. I appreciated that this place doesn't take reservations, because it felt like we truly had a chance of getting a table, unlike other places in Oakland/SF where you need to reserve a table days in advance. We put our name on the list around 6pm and were told it would be an hour wait, which we expected given its location in Oakland. They were true to their word and we didn't have to wait more than 1 hour. We were taken back to their amazingly extensive back patio, which had plenty of heat-lamps to provide cozy outdoor dining on a chilly evening. Our party of 5 tried 3 pizzas and the sweet corn contorni. We also shared a bottle of the house red wine and split a couple of desserts. The pizza crust was really good! The night we went, they had a white pizza with potato and castelvetrano olives which was my favorite pizza. My favorite bites of the night were definitely the sweet corn as well as the cookies and cream pot-de-creme. The latter was quite literally my dream dessert. The meatballs although decent was a bit overly salty (coming from a person who likes salty). The pizzas were barely edible. We ordered two pizzas and more than half of both pizzas didn't have anything on it, not cheese or sauce or topping. Felt like eating dry crust the whole way.
