We met up with friends from SF at Pizzaiolo on Thursday as a halfway point from Danville. Terrific vibe. The hostess and all staff were so friendly and accommodating and the food was absolutely terrific. We had a woodfired pizza, cauliflower pasta and the chicken. Each outstanding. I almost never do this but I am so disappointed. Arrived with my husband and my one year old at 5:10 on my birthday. They told us we would have about a 15 minute wait. No biggie we put our name in. We waited for 10 minutes and they came back over and said oh sorry once we get everyone seated the only table we will have for you is the HIGH TOP COMMUNAL TABLE. I'm staring at the hostess literally with a ONE YEAR OLD in my arms and replied that I didn't understand how that was logistically possible - did they have a high top high chair? They did not. So if we want a table what is the alternative? A THIRTY MINUTE WAIT. With a CHILD. Who does that? Would give them zero stars if I could thanks for ruining my 42nd. read more

We had the mushroom pizza and arugula pizza with prosciutto. Mushroom pizza was my favorite and we didn't add any meat on it. The flavor of the smoky fresh mushroom was home run. The fresh toppings, dough, sauce, and cheese are all well put together for one of the best pizza I've had in a while! We also tried the persimmon salad. A little over priced in my opinion. Thinly sliced cut of persimmons with nuts, cilantro, pomegranate, covered in pistachio oil. Really flavorful but I feel like I can make it at home lol. I highly recommend getting the apple dough dessert (forgot the name). Yummy in my tummy Service was awesome as our waiter checked in frequently, went over the menu in detail when we asked. This is my go-to spot for celebrations and dinners out with my son. Everything is always delicious and our waiter Matt is always cordial and prompt with our service. When I get my orders to-go the bar staff is always pleasant. Salads are always creative, pastas rotate ingredients to keep the menu always fresh with new options. The interior is always a bit dark for my old eyes, but the outside is nice to enjoy dinner during the summer months. Hands down one of my top favorite places to eat. read more

The carrot appetizer was enjoyable with the cream and cilantro green sauce. The pasta was a little bit salty and the pizza was a little burnt, but nothing bad. The interior of the restaurant is really dim, which made it hard to read the menu and even look at the food. A lot of conversation was going on, so it was a little loud, but that's usually expected. Our waitress was honestly quite rude the entire night. She forgot my order multiple times, never came by our table but constantly talked to the table next to us. Was walking down telegraph and thought we might as well check this place out....and wow! The ambiance is warm and rustic. We tried the citrus melon, little gem lettuce salad and a pizza and cocktails. All the ingredients were fresh and everything was flavorful. Had been here once before and knew their pizzas and other dishes were amazing, but just discovered that their new cafe hours are their best kept secret. Turns out they serve yummy breakfast, brunch, and coffee drinks Wednesday through Sunday mornings. Came here for Mother's Day and Pizzaiolo did not disappoint. Their menu has something g for everyone. I had a savory porridge with greens and a farm egg. Realty hit the spot! Others in our party had the greens and beans with an egg, the cheesy egg toast, and a focaccia egg and prosciutto dish. All amazing. We ordered some biscuits and jam for the table. I would keep coming back just for those. Think of the perfect biscuit, but with delightfully crisp edges and a doughy center. All the bread items were top notch from the massive blocks of focaccia to the crusty toasted country bread. A carbivore's paradise! The patio is such a relaxed and welcoming place to hang out alone or with a friends to celebrate, a special occasion, and you can always find a cozy booth inside if you want to work while sipping something from the coffee bar. If I lived closer, I would definitely hang out there. Since I am quite a distance away I I will be content to make the drive for significant celebrations. read more

They've offered to make up for our visit so hopefully we'll have a better experience next time, I appreciate that they cared enough about their customer. I'm unsure if it was just them discriminating against us but all the tables around us came like an hour to 30minutes after us, had all their food before us some even left while we're still waiting on our food. We reminded them of our friend's margarita pizza at least 3 times and they still brought it after everyone else on the table finished their food. Horrible service doubt we're ever coming here again! Had a delicious meal with my family here tonight. We were feeling pasta and pizza and we came to the perfect place. Pizzaiolo has been around for a while and there's a reason why they have a 4 star average rating from over 1000 reviews. Their wood fired pizzas and fresh pastas are so yummy. I really enjoy the flavor varieties and always wish I had more stomach space so I can taste each one. The ambiance is very cozy, intimate, welcoming, and the service is warm and prompt. We ordered the Margherita and Potato/Green olive pizzas, the Tagliatelle with chanterelles, and finished off with the Basque cheesecake. Bro got a a glass of Cab. It was the perfect amount of food for the 4 of us. The pizzas were piping hot from the fire, the tagliatelle was fresh and chewy, the chanterelles had a nice texture with a nice lemon sauce, the Basque cheesecake was baked well with a beautiful toasty top and wasn't overly sweet. I loved my dinner here! I came around 5 PM without a reservation and was seated super quickly in the back patio as I requested. Ordered the arugula and herb salad, which was delicious and springy and kept me happy until the stars appeared: a pepperoni and hot honey pizza and a corn pizza. Both were absolutely delicious with a crispy thin crust and fresh flavorful toppings. Had to get a dessert too with that beautiful menu, went with the buttermilk biscuit with strawberries, cream, and ice cream and thought it was the most flaky and perfect biscuit I've ever had. tl;dr hard to find pop-up with smash burgers in name only CONTEXT: Back Alley Burgers is a side project run by Pizzaiolo; as far as I am aware, it is not an independent project, so I'm placing this review under Pizzaiolo. FINDING THE POP UP: The concept is griddled smash burgers delivered on the back patio. It was a bit challenging to find; the burgers are literally served in the back alley, which is either accessible through the restaurant or the alley on 49th street. The restaurant had a large sign in front of it which sort of blocked the store front. I didn't know you could access the alley on 49th street, and the door was unlocked, so I just walked through the restaurant. Only one person said "hi" to us, and there was no direction in terms of where to order the burgers. After wandering around the restaurant for a minute, I finally asked one of the prep cooks, and he directed me to the back. The ambiance is great, it's a nice patio area that is covered by sun umbrellas; it was well heated by patio heaters, especially as yesterday was pretty cold. FOOD & SERVICE: Ordering was straightforward, but the server seemed disinterested and wasn't very helpful when we asked a few questions about the menu. We ordered 2 double cheeseburgers, and 2 fries. The menu bills these as smash burgers, although the website just says they are griddled burgers. Short wait for the burgers (5-10 minutes). I was a bit disappointed as soon as saw the burger as the cheese was only just starting to melt and the patty was not caramelized on the outside as I would expect from a smash burger. Biting in, all the flavor was good, but one patty was rare, the other was medium rare. The onions had not fully dissolved/softened either. Overall, it was disappointing. I think their griddle wasn't hot enough to get a good crust on the burger, but I'm surprised that we were delivered something that was visibly not done. On the bright side, the fries were a knockout. I will give back alley another shot; I think it was a particularly cold day that impacted the griddle. That being said, I think there are other, better smash burger pop ups in Oakland as well as better/easier to get to established burger joints. read more

I love this place! Went here on a Sunday morning to get brunch! With the SO. There was a little wait as we didn't have a reservation! Decided to get drinks while waiting for our table--- you can stay at the bar or stay at their outdoor space! We opted to stay in their backyard patio as it was so nice and warm! Drinks were soooo good! Too good I ordered ate least 3 drinks (I shouldn't have because we all know how much cocktails cost ). I enjoyed it sooo much tho so no regrets! It's usually crowded, especially on the weekends, so I'd get there early to put your party's name down, since wait times can be longer than you'd want to wait. At the time of this review, they aren't taking reservations, so expect busy/peak hours with a wait time of maybe 45 minutes to an hour. I got their pizza with arugula and prosciutto and it was really fresh! Plenty of fresh arugula on the pizza, but it could have had more prosciutto. At least for my pizza, I felt like mine didn't have as much as I expected. It was still really good, despite the serving of the meat topping. I should have asked if they had ranch on the side because the pizza would've gone great with it! I had half a pizza leftover, since the pizza was more than I could handle at the time, but I definitely finished it when I got home. I recommend to try and finish it when it's just out of the oven because of the crispy crust. I'd come back here again to try another one of their pizzas for sure! read more

Stopped by here about a month ago with my girlfriend to grab some dinner after a movie. Wasn't expecting to have one of the best slices of pizza I've had since moving to the Bay Area. We ordered two Pizza's : The Mushrooms, spring onions, fresh ricotta, garlic cream + gremolata and the Sweet + hot peppers, tomato sauce, housemade sausage + panna. My Girlfriend is vegetarian, and the restaurant/ staff had no problem removing the sausage from the second pizza. The Pizza themselves were fantastic. The crust of the pizza was sturdy enough to hold all the toppings but not super tough when biting into slices. And the toppings were delicious. Also, can't forget to mention the cocktails/ drinks which were great and refreshing. Would reccomend this to anyone looking for a great pizza in the Bay Area/ East Bay read more

We knew Pizzalo can be crowded, so my daughter and I came at 5:30PM on a Sat night and we got a table outdoors with our dog within 5 minutes. The hostess was welcoming and we were happy to get a table so quickly. 1 star for having an outdoor patio that is pleasant, not the best aesthetics nor much effort into camaflouging the unsightly areas surrounding the patio. Seats are hard metal and quite uncomfortable. I would bring a cushion for elderly diners. 2 large dining tables that they have different groups share, so was a bit surprising since we can hear each others' conversations. But at least they had outdoor space. We ordered the honey and pepperoni pizza that was $28 for what I would call a single serving pizza. The most expensive for the size pizza i've ever had. I ate only 2 small-med sized slices so that my growing daughter can eat 6. We also shared a salad that contained beets, greens, and green goddess dressing that cost $19 to my recollection. Pizza was very tasty but crust bottom had too much burnt flour and it tasted bitter. It's also carcinogenic to eat burnt food. I love green goddess dressing and a good recipe is delicious but this one tasted like it was out of a bottle or the recipe was awful, making it too acidic and lacked the herb and creamy flavor I've experienced making at home. We ordered no drinks. The total came to nearly $60 with no drinks so we didn't order a 2nd pizza although I knew she wanted to try another one.. but for $35+ with tax and tip for a single serving pizza, I couldn't do it. The bill was nearly $75 for one single serving pizza and a small sized salad that was shared by the 2 of us. I would never go back. There are just too many good pizza places. I make only organic pizza so I appreciate that they source from sustainably grown produce, and I give them 1 start for that. Also, they gave us the wrong bill that was 2x the amount of food & drinks we ordered and that should not have happened. No apologies... if I had done that, I'd be so embarrassed and would have apologized profusely to the customer. What's also tacky is that they have set up an electronic payment at the table (convenient and fast for all) but they ask for a minimum of 20%,, 25% or 30% tip! I gave a custom tip of 15% of the subtotal, not the taxed total of the inflated price. I understand that everyone needs to make a living.. but pizza is very cheap to make (even organic at home) and I'm guessing that the proprietor makes off quite well. read more

We held our wedding at Pizzaiolo a few months ago, and it was an absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. Working with Maggie and the Pizzaiolo staff was so easy. They were responsive and went above and beyond to ensure we were hosting a Covid-safe event. On the night of, the Pizzaiolo team took exceptional care of us and our guests and made sure no one was left hungry or without a drink in their hand. Every item was incredibly delicious - from the appetizers, to the main meal and dessert. Maggie partnered with us to create a curated cocktail and wine list, and the bartenders went out of their way to make sure everyone was happy. Our guests still tell us that this was the best food they've ever had at a wedding! After walking around the cute back alley, thankfully stopped here at the right time for a drink and pizza to go! The two drinks we had were both super solid along with the pizzas. The crust was cooked to perfection along with just the right amount of toppings for Margherita and Mushroom pizzas. Looking forward to being back to try the other items on the menu soon. The pizza here is high-quality! The Margherita had quality ingredients. The cheese was particularly delicious. The Garlic Mushroom was super garlicky, so be forewarned. But I enjoyed it, since I love garlic! The pizzas are small and thin--great for sharing. I particularly liked the ambiance, and there was great music, too. It's also surrounded by a bunch of cute shops, including an ice cream shop. It would be a great date place for dinner and wandering afterwards, but it's also great for groups. Staff is friendly and attentive. Parking can be a bit tough, especially around typical busy times, but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, a great, neighborhood pizza spot w/ great staff and ambiance. I'm sorry but the service left a bad taste on my tongue. Came here during a Friday evening and the waitress (who is very lovely and friendly btw) said it would be an 1 hour and 15 mins wait. My friend and I agreed, walked around the neighborhood, explored a little, came back. We ended up waiting 1hour 50mins - 2 hours! We finally got a table, picked our food, and waited to place an order. That's when I realized ONLY ONE PERSON IS TAKING ORDERS/PROCESSING THE TAB/BILL. What was more frustrating? The waiter in charge was so selective on who he wanted to wait on first. There was a couple that was seated after us, who he talked to for over 15+ mins and they received their drinks and first dish before us. So I flagged another staff member and asked if we could order, he said he would call the other guy over....so we waited some more. He's the reason why the initial wait to get into the restaurant was soooooo long! We finally order and things start to roll out. What was ordered: Heirloom tomatoes with fresh black eyed peas, Jimmy Nardello peppers, aïoli + toasted breadcrumbs ($16): A very solid salad. The toasted bread crumbs added nicely to the texture and helped the salad stand out. I could've gone without the black eyed peas - the mushy texture was a little disappointing. Tomato sauce, pepperoni, jalapeño + spicy honey ($21): Very reminiscent of the pizza I had in Europe (in terms of size, consistency, and flavor). The toppings were well executed, the pizza dough was thin, the crust was just right. I couldn't taste anything spicy though. Brentwood sweet corn from the wood oven with jalapeño, lime, cilantro + ricotta salata ($14): Average corn, not worth it for the price. Summer fruit (roasted peaches) with cookies + cream cream ($12): Not a fan... I would've preferred going to the grocery store and buy $12 worth of fruit and ice cream. The peach was caramelized and the heat made the ice cream melt really fast. Much was left to be desired. Bernie, Apple cider ($4 dollars, if I remember correctly): It was ok. My friend didn't like it. Overall, this was an a-ok meal. After our meal, surprise surprise... we had to wait to pay for our tab and I ended up flagging someone down who again had to send the same guy back. Had the service been better, maybe 3.5/5 stars. As my lady and I were on the hunt for an above average pizza place in the East Bay, this was more challenging than I had anticipated. We were looking for something intimate, not too loud, and more of a romantic spot to enjoy our Saturday evening. We've already been to "Zachary's" in Berkeley but we didn't want deep dish. We did check out "Drake's Dealership" but it was way too noisy and like a college environment. Finally we stumbled across "Pizzaiolo" and this place was exactly what we were looking for. Located directly on Telegraph Ave. (and adjacent to 51st St.) in the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, Pizzaiolo has been serving up their Italian dishes for many years. However, this was the first time I had the opportunity in dining here. I came here with my lady on the evening of Saturday, April 13th around 7:30pm. Keep in mind that this place is quite small and they do not offer any outdoor seating. Upon our arrival, the hostess immediately greeted us and it was roughly a 40 minute wait before our table was ready. Once seated, we sat close to the rear of the restaurant. The inside is very dim lit which only adds to much of the intimacy. We were given a carafe of water. We started out with our drink order; she decides on their "Housemade Lemonade" while I opted for a cold glass of Berkeley's very own "Trumer Pils" beer. As far as our starter dish, we decided on a small loaf of "Acme Bread w/Butter" (priced at $3.50) while our main entree was one of their specialty pizzas (priced at $21.00) that consisted of tomato sauce, pepperoni, jalapeños, and cheese. Service here was exceptional as our waitress was very quick, attentive, and courteous. Not to mention, our pizza arrived in just 5 minutes. Not bad for a busy Saturday evening. As far as the taste, the crust had a perfect crunch to it while all the spices pulled together in the cheese and tomato sauce. And we definitely got filled up as this pizza was large enough for two while we also got our carb fix with the bread and butter. We even had room for dessert and decided on ordering their chocolate sorbet complete with a salted chocolate chip cookie. The flavor was rich, decadent, and heavenly. What makes Pizzaiolo a nice option is that they serve up a complete breakfast/coffee menu which is nice for those early birds. However, they do close their doors daily from 12-5:30pm so there are no afternoon/lunch options. Overall, "Pizzaiolo" is a fine dining establishment that I highly recommend. I recommend Pizzaiolo for the pizza! The pizza was delicious! I had been wanting to try Pizzaiolo for a while because their menu sounds amazing. Every time i I walk by their storefront, I salivate looking at the menu. It is also always very busy. So beware - it is walk in only; they do not take reservations. Be prepared to wait at least 1 hour for a table in the pack patio (heated. Indoor dining is not an option) on a busy afternoon (we had Friday dinner). However, the restaurant does have a first come first serve parklet option. The only setback to this is your menu is limited and you are not allowed to order from the "primi" or "secondi" options - the main courses. You can only order drinks, appetizers, sides, and pizza. Since I wanted pasta, I put my name down and was told the wait time was 1.5 hours. I was starving but decided to wait. Went to North Light for a drink. Luckily, my table ended up being ready within an hour. The service was good, our server was incredibly helpful, flexible, and accommodating. The food came out within a reasonable time and our server scheduled it in courses so we always had things rolling in. His thoughtfulness was very appreciated and made for a great experience. The back patio was really nice. It's like a little desert haven. The only negative aspect is that the chairs are flimsy metal and were a little wobbly. The food and drinks overall we're a little disappointing, except for the pizza. Here's why: Drinks: ordered the Pizzaiolo aperitif, a bottle of , Cabernet frank, and sampled the house red and the house tonic. The wine was overpriced and the drinks were fine. The aperitif tasted like watered down koolaid with alcohol. I've had aperitifs in many other places, both in the Bay Area and in Italy, and the quality here was not what I expected. The house red was also not that good, despite the server suggesting it was better than the bottle of wine we ended up ordering. Appetizers: ordered the bone marrow and the prosciutto salad. The bone marrow was very good but I wish it was been roasted more evenly. There were parts that were barely cooked and lacked flavor. Some of the salad's components, like the burrata, the grapes, the cucumber, and the prosciutto, were outstanding. However, the melon lacked any flavor and sweetness that is expected with a salad like this. Additionally, I was very confused by the chili powder added to the burrata. It is more traditional to season with pepper, salt, and or olive oil, or herbs. I was very confused that chili was added because it didn't really work. I love chili on my fruit (like cucumber, pineapple, oranges, etc), but IMO it doesn't work with prosciutto and burrata. Mains: ordered the Rigatoni alla Bolognese and two margherita pizzas. About a quarter of the Rigatoni pasta itself was undercooked, evident by the fact that some noodles were hard and when we bit into it some of the noodles were still white in places. The noodles that were fully cooked were delicious. There was also, IMO, insufficient meat and sauce proportional to the noodles. I really wanted pasta to overall this was a disappointing dish. The pizzas were fabulous, though confusingly one was spicy and the other one was not. For a restaurant that doesn't advertise a margherita pizza with spice, it was very odd to have one be spicy. There seems to be a lack of evenness (both in pasta and pizza) in the cooking BTS. Desserts: ordered the baked peach and apricot gallete. They were both very good. My one complaint with the peach was that it wasn't super sweet, as I would expect a very ripe peach to be in the middle of summer, and the restaurant did not add enough sugar to help it's flavors breakthrough. The ice cream did enhance the flavors, but the peach itself had too much butter so that overpowered the ice cream and peach itself. My partner and I came here Thursday early evening to try their menu for the first time. All in all, I'll say that this place is nice - but I'm not sure if I'll come back. Let me explain why. First, I loved the seating space. While the tables are a little wobbly and tiny for their fare (we're talking about pizzas, which take up a lot of space), the space is sunny and lit with fairy lights, which is probably charming at night time. Second, the service was pretty disappointing. It's okay that we were told to go up to the restaurant to order our items (not sure why though), but then no one checked on us to offer us water, napkins, utensils and serving plates. Maybe everything was self-serve from the start? But we weren't informed of that... at least until we asked a server (who then told us while we awkwardly sat there with greasy hands). Just felt really invisible and unattended to, and it would be fine if the menu and reputation implied otherwise. Third, the menu design could do with some work. Now, I'm not writing this review to be nit-picky just because. The menu led us to getting literally misinformed. For one, we wanted a glass of Pinot Noir which had two prices, presumably one for glass and one for bottle. We tried to order it, and they said Pinot Noir is only sold by the bottle... ok, we'll go with the house red instead. Then second, we ordered the hot peppers, sausage, and ricotta pizza, expecting all pizzas would have either red sauce or white sauce. Our pizza was sauce-less. If I could design the menu, I would have it list 3 separate sections: Red Sauce, White Sauce, and No Sauce. Finally, the food we tried was a mix. Mind you, we didn't try a lot and so I don't want this review to account for the general experience. We ordered the Fully Belly figs with prosciutto, crema, and summer melon - and we really liked this!! I think the way it's served could do with a little more thought - maybe have things be bite sized or pre-cut... or serve with a knife. But the flavors were a fun, summery, and fresh mix that came together refreshingly well. The pizza we mentioned earlier was so-so. I did appreciate how springy and wonderfully chewy the pizza crust / dough was, and it's exactly the texture I like. But the toppings, plus no tomato sauce, were a little lackluster. We ended up receiving some tomato sauce on the side, which we appreciated; but the flavor is different from when you fire the pizza with the sauce before versus after it's cooked. Maybe I'll come back. For now, I'm glad I got to at least try Pizzaiolo out. read more
