My old dentist had done an incomplete root canal job two years ago and I had to get it fixed. My new and current dental office referred me to Pla & Watts and I had a great experience! I went in on a referral from my dentist. The assistant took two or three X-rays and the machine they used was definitely outdated and not made for comfort at all. Next the doctor (Pla) I believe, came in and seemed upset that I couldn't answer all her questions, so she did a tap test to my teeth and it felt like she was prospecting for gold, not gently at all. Got through that and she did the cold test, it was even worse. I grumbled(because you can't speak) and I about jumped out of my seat when she continued pushing the cold tip against my tooth.....I gave a pretty loud expletive and I think she was offended. As I asked how much more of that there would be, she unapologetically said "oh, much more!" I got up and left. Wow! This is my first experience with an endodontist. For starters, I feel so much more confident having my treatment done by a specialist. I feel like my past work was careless and is why it needed to be redone. I showed up almost in tears with a tooth abscess. The office was very clean with friendly staff. Not only did they get me in ASAP but made sure to get me out of pain. I received a personal phone call that evening by Dr. Pla making sure I was better. Today i went into for my root canal and they explained everything they did during the process and reassured me. They were quick and efficient. And again, a phone call to make sure I was doing well. They told me I needed to pay another $487 of my portion estimated charges including what insurance would cover. After a very thorough and informative consultation, I was quickly scheduled for a double root canal. It was the first dental procedure in my life where I experienced basically zero pain! I am not a fan of the dentist, and not many people are. The front desk girl was super friendly and walked me through check in. I was back in the examination room within minutes and in the chair with everything explained. I normally have to have some sort of nitrous gas or take medication because of my nerves before I go under the drill. Dr Pla was absolutely AMAZING! As well as her assistant Erin! I now understand why people have a hard time going to the dentist and don't like the dentist. Growing up, I have never had a bad experience with a dentist as my family has gone to the same dentist office my entire life. This was an experience I will NEVER forget. Dr. Watts was arrogant, non-compassionate, and just an overall rude person. I came in on an emergency visit due to tooth pain and needed a root canal done on my molar. So, my dentist recommended this place. From the moment I came into the office there were red flags. Dr. Watts didn't explain much of what of what he was going to be doing that day because it was a filled day and I could tell he was stressed and not in a good mood. He told me to come back at 3:30pm of which I did. Luckily, there was a cancellation (as told by the dental hygienist lady who was very nice the entire time). So, it wasn't as bad. During the procedure he numbed me which all went OK. He seemed really short with the dental hygienist (not something I am used to as my dentist office everyone is a breath of fresh air). I found it odd and rude the way he treated her. He would say things like "Are we going to be here tomorrow?" and she would respond with "me?" and he would respond back with "ARE WE GOING TO BE HERE TOMORROW?!" and just demanding like "QUICKLY get me this." She would make small talk, but I could tell he was obviously trying to avoid any kind of talk (understandably because he was concentrated, but still not something I am used to). Now, for the procedure. Mind you I've had TWO root canals done. My pain tolerance is SKY high. I have had two unmedicated births, one of which I talked during transition and was essentially painless tbh. My midwife has even said that she was amazed by my pain tolerance. With that said, I have NEVER experienced this kind of pain in my entire life. Dr. Watts told me if I felt any pain to raise my left hand. I can't even remember how many times I raised my left hand, and at one point he hit the nerve and I was literally waving both of my hands in excruciating pain. If you can imagine nerve pain DEEP down in the root of your tooth it's a pain like no other. Child birth doesn't make me cringe, THIS experience makes me cringe. I told him that I could feel my tongue tingling which means I know the numbness was wearing off. Not once did he stop to renumb me and he didn't seem to care at all, he just kept going. He did ask "Can you feel this? Can you feel that?" And at one point I was like "I AM NOT LYING I CAN FEEL IT" because he said I was numb still. He should have right then stopped and put more numbness in me. He then tried to fix one of my fillings and I could even feel that and I was like "I AM DONE." He then relayed that I may be numb for a few hours after this. I got all the junk out of my mouth and I was COMPLETELY not numb. Not even the SLIGHTEST. I probably had been not numb for awhile. Obviously, because I could feel most of the procedure. I told him most all of this. That I had been through childbirth and this was EXTREMELY painful. And he was like "You weren't in pain the ENTIRE time" (so sympathetic) and I responded "No I wasn't in pain the ENTIRE time" But, I raised my hand SEVERAL times and at one point I was waving at him to stop. And then I was like I AM DONE at the end when he was hitting a nerve in the tooth that had a chip in the filling. Dr. Watts was arrogant, careless, non-compassionate and I will never step FOOT in that office again. I think the dental hygienist lady should quit because she can do better than that job and the way she was treated. I now understand why people hate the dentist and will NEVER recommend this place. Dr. Watts if you are going to be helping patients as your job, DO better than the way you handled my situation, otherwise quit and do something that doesn't result in traumatic experiences for your patients. This was completely UNACCEPTABLE. Treat your employees better, treat your patients better and when they are in pain ... STOP. Numb them again because if they are feeling something, obviously it was wearing off. Don't downplay the situation by saying I should feel some of the twinges and stuff and that you've had root canals in the past and felt portions of it. I HAVE HAD TWO ROOT CANALS DONE. NEITHER OF WHICH I FELT PAIN WHATSOEVER. NOTHING of this sort. I DON'T CARE if you say you have been in this business for 15 years and have never heard of a bad experience. I DON'T CARE IF ITS 40 years. The pain that I felt was REAL and the way you handled the situation was WRONG. DO NOT COME HERE. Let me start by saying that my nerves are through the roof at the mere mention of the dentist. I was referred to this office and reluctantly scheduled my appointment. I wasn't too sure when I walked in but went ahead with the appointment anyway. Dr. Pla and her assistants are the most amazing people ever to work in the medical field. I always need more anesthetic but doctors always decide to start drilling just to make sure. It's a painful way to go. Dr. Pla gave me a little extra when I wasn't fully numb. I didn't feel anything after that. They were so comforting that I actually enjoyed the appointment. That never happens! I'm usually in tears or on the verge of crying. These people are doing something right. It's old school customer service where they actually take the time to hear your concerns and then they address them. In other words, they actually seem to care about your experience. I cannot say enough about this office except that I will never go to a regular dentist again for a root canal. I went into my dentist to check on a sensitive tooth. It wasn't that bad really, but I wanted to check it out. They referred me to Pla & Watts for an evaluation. After I checked in, they took me into a treatment room to have look. A young intern then took a swab with a substance on a Q-tip that made my tooth extremely sensitive, it hurt! I was asking a lot of questions about what was happening, and they told me I needed a root canal and there was no guarantee that it would survive. The Doctor finally came in and instructed me as what had to be done with my tooth, no options or explanations. She scolded the intern in front of me of how she didn't explain everything to me correctly. At this point I knew I didn't trust this place and cancelled my next appointment. After all of this, I'm out $250 even with insurance! PLEASE, do yourself a favor and look for a better Endodontics provider! These folks are after one thing, you hard earned money! I have had many root canals and lots of dental work done. I'm familiar with how an anesthetic shot should feel, and with what happens during a root canal and how that should feel. Dr. Pla did a root canal for me today. The only things I've experienced that were more painful or terrifying than today's experience were childbirth and the time a podiatrist stuck a needle through my foot accidentally. The shot was incredibly painful and Dr. Pla did not seem to care. She was very fast, stuck the needle in hard multiple times and pushed the plunger too fast. When she did the roof of my mouth she was not careful and did not take the extra time like other more gentle dentists and endodontists I'm accustomed to seeing. She just said it had to be that way and gave me an insincere apology and some excuse as to why it had to hurt so much.and clearly had no interest in making it more comfortable. They put a rubber dam on the tooth and without putting a suction tube under the dam Dr. Pla placed a bite block in my mouth and began to drill. I even asked for a suction tube to be placed under there (another thing that in my experience is just always done) and she acted surprised, like that wasn't something she'd ever heard of anyone needing. Even the tech seemed to think it was an odd request. So i laid there for an hour having to swallow my nasty saliva with all the chemicals in it. It was horrible. The chemicals they use for root canals are the worst tasting things I've ever had in my mouth, and i ingested them because they did not put a suction tube in my mouth. A couple times i made them give me the suction tube so i could suction my own mouth. It was just weird. Like going to a restaurant and asking for a plate and the server saying, "What? You want a plate? For your food? Are you sure?" They want to do four more apparently. Thanks but no thanks. I'll take my business to someone who cares. UPDATE: After going to another endodontist to see about those other four root canals, i was told one of the teeth Dr. Pla wanted to re treat was actually fractured. If she had tried to do another root canal in that tooth it would have fallen apart, creating an even more unpleasant experience if she tried to extract the tooth without proper anesthesia. Extractions are normally done under anesthesia. Instead, i was referred to an oral surgeon to extract the tooth, and told to return to the endodontist in six months to see if the other issues resolve themselves once the bad tooth comes out. I am not one to write reviews often, but Dr. Watts & the Pla Watts team were outstanding with what became a complex 2 hour root canal procedure. All I had to do was sit in a chair but Dr. Watts & staff worked professionally to repair a decay (not sure if I am using the correct dental word). They have modern equipment, take time to explain everything and provide good advice. Both of their clinics are beautiful, but the Puyallup clinic was the most comfortable and had such a welcoming atmosphere. The doctor has beautiful artwork there, including one piece that looks like it should be hanging in the Tacoma Glass Museum. Dr Pla called me the evening of my appointment to check on me. A day later I was having a reaction of itching from the antibiotic I needed to fight an infection. She called me back within a minute at 8:30 pm on a Friday night to help me. Every single thing with Dr Pla has been top notch from getting me in right away to making sure I was taken care of. I was referred to Dr. Pla for a evaluation and possible root canal on a tooth that has been cold sensitive and aching for a few months. I was extremely nervous as I have had several unpleasant dental experiences in the past. When I walked in I was greeted by friendly staff. The wait was not long before they took me back and tested my tooth. The assistants were also kind and welcoming. They took an image and my tooth was tested. It was determined that I needed a root canal. The procedure was explained in detail by the assistant. Dr. Pla came in to meet me and made me feel even more comfortable and welcomed me to her office. She asked me if I understood the procedure and if I had any questions. I was taken to get a 3D image of my tooth, I was told this aids them to see the canals of the tooth which made me feel even more comfortable. Dr. Pla came in to get me numb, I was really nervous to be receiving shots in the roof of my mouth. She was so good at it I didn't even feel the needle. A rubber dam was placed by her assistant and she took extra care to make sure I didn't feel any discomfort. They started the procedure, and used a microscope to view my tooth the whole time. I was checked on by Dr. Pla and her assistant frequently throughout the procedure, asking if I needed any suction or had any discomfort. Everything was explained to me in detail as they were doing it. I have a lower back fusion and have had shoulder surgery so I was really worried about not being able to move for a long time. The procedure was so smooth that I was not in the chair very long and it did not bother my back or shoulder. They took images and showed me the before and after of my tooth. I was very pleased with the explanation of the after care. I was told I would receive a text message in six months and they will see me again for a no cost check of the tooth. When the numbness went away I was so relieved that I was no longer in pain. Dr. Pla called me that evening to check on me which is something I have never had a doctor do! From the beginning to the end this was the best dental experience I have had! I highly recommend Dr. Pla and her staff! read more

I will not be returning here. I had to suffer through my root canal, not only did the dentists breath smell so bad I wanted to puke but they didn't numb me properly and it wore off halfway into the process and with tears just flowing down my face they wouldn't stop working on my tooth. I also paid a portion of my bill and they were suppose to send me the rest the following month and I just got the bill yesterday 2/21/15 when I had the work done in November 2014 and it's the full amount quoted when I have proof I paid a third of the bill at the time of service. read more

I was getting ready to leave town for a special graduation trip with my son when an old root canal blew up - I was referred to Dr. Pla who got me in that very afternoon - Her office was beautiful and her staff could not have been more friendly or professional. After thoroughly explaining a treatment plan, Dr. Pla got to work and in just a few minutes I had a temporary fix that would at least allow me to get through my trip with a minimum of discomfort - the day of my return, my root canal was completed - my 2 hour appointment was actually 45 minutes start to finish and absolutely pain free - I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Pla - she is warm, friendly, compassionate I highly recommend her. read more

I went into the clinic to be evaluated by the doctor to determine if a root canal was indeed needed. Dr. Watts was very informative explaining the process as well as his motivations which included not having me go through the process of a root canal if my symptoms did not warrant such conditions. After my examination, he determined a root canal was not needed and sent me on my way. How many times does that happen when one feels they can trust the professional conducting an examination and that they will make the correct diagnosis for YOU and your benefit instead of simply putting $$ in their own wallets? After having two root canals done in one sitting I had absolutely no discomfort or pain, zero. Dr. Watts did a fantastic job of keeping me numb and checking through out the process on how I was doing. He even went out of his way to check up on me later that night and also talked to my dentist due to a few concerns I had and he ended up saving me from getting a recent, new crown replaced. I was sent to this endodonist for a root canal. I gave them my insurance when I came in door- at that point they should have told me they didn't take that insurance! On 8/13//14 I had a visit to Pla Endodontics. All of the staff including Dr. Pla are very friendly.I was acknowledged as I both entered & left the building. I was walked thru the entire process of my root canal treatment as they were doing the procedure. I've sat in dental chairs before & wondered what the heck they were doing; i didn't have to wonder here. If you'd rather not know what's going on they do have headphones & music to listen to. Dr. Pla and her staff could not be more helpful, friendly, or kind. I broke my jaw and could not open my mouth very wide, but desperately needed work on teeth damaged in my accident. They fit me in their schedule,got me scheduled elsewhere for other work I need done, and worked as quickly as possible, still doing a great job, so I wouldn't have to keep my mouth open for long for my root canal. I went to Dr. Pla on a referral from my regular dentist's office. I was impressed with the attitude, friendliness, and professionalism of the staff there. I had never been there before but soon I was confident that they knew what they were doing. (This is probably the best, most important, thing for me.) To be honest, I was hoping for a better outcome. My tooth is no longer in horrible pain from infection, but I am still having some difficulties with pressure on the tooth. She did get me in quickly, due the the nature of my pain. However, she seemed very rushed and quite literally left to change while her assistant did a lot of work. When she came back, it was clear that she changed into workout cloths underneath her lab coat. I didn't even finish writing the check for my procedure before she left her office in her workout cloths. If my tooth felt great, I would not have cared, but, my tooth issue is not completely resolved. I know that the infection was pretty bad, so it's possible nothing could be done to completely fix the tooth. Perhaps it was an off day for her,or perhaps she was late for a workout class, I don't know, but I will not be going back. I can't remember the exact time my procedure was finished, but I am sure it was well before 5PM. read more

No I normally do not leave reviews but I think that the staff at Pla & Watts are the greatest. I was referred to them after my own DDS attempted to do a root canal and that didn't go so well. I used to be an D.A so I was never afraid of the dentist but being that the whole situation with my dentist went horribly wrong I was so nervous going in to see Dr. Watts. Upon meeting Dr Watts I immediately expressed my concerns and explained to him what happened and why I was referred to him he listened and took the time to explain everything to me in detail, something my dentist never did. Throughout the process he would explain what he was going to do before he did it, always making sure I was doing OK. From beginning to end, I never felt a single thing!! This place is great! One little advice, there is a 3D X-ray that must be taken in order to do the procedure and insurances do not cover it, but other then that little surprise at my appointment was great I recommend this place!! read more

I highly recommend Pla Endodontics. I had previously had two root canals on the same tooth (I know... what a nightmare). I was experiencing sensitivity in the same area and went to see my dentist. She could tell from the x-ray that I had an infection and referred me to Dr. Pla. I made the appointment for the following week, but over the weekend I was experiencing such pain they were able to see me early Monday. Dr. Pla attempted to alleviate the pain, but unfortunately, my jaw became extremely swollen. Dr. Pla had to perform a third root canal to relieve the infection and then surgery the week after to rid the infection from the jaw bone. Needless to say, there were some tears and a lot of pain - but never at the hands of Dr. Pla or her staff. They treated me with respect and gentleness and always explained everything they were doing to alleviate my pain. They did everything they could to get me taken care of in a timely manner and even had me ready to go for an overseas trip I had scheduled. I can assure you that you will be very pleased with the treatment by Dr. Pla and her staff. read more
