In terms of bang for your buck and simple but great-tasting food, it's hard to beat Plaka. I'm a fan of the lamb/beef gyro. Never dry, always super flavorful. I usually order double meat and it works on the salad or in the pita. My wife really likes the chicken and always gets a salad with extra tzatziki. The hummus and baba ganoush are huge servings for $5. I'm not a fan of dolmas, but others seem to like these. The spanakopita is crispy, even to-go. The meatballs are always a hit with my kids. They are light with a tangy tomato sauce. The drive-through makes it very convenient to pick up something on the way home. You can call it in as well, but they are really fast at the window. Minor annoyance is that they never have saganaki, but who needs flaming cheese? Great people, fast service, always solid food. read more

Granted, there is no pretense with this restaurant. The dining room is modest, the food is served cafeteria style and the restaurant sits just off of the freeway. But what it lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in food quality and service. My vegetarian daughter loves the combo platters. The dolmades are exceptional. Wow! I recently ate here for the first time with some coworkers and was blown away by the deliciousness. The food is served cafeteria style, it's all prepped and you tell the person behind the counter your order and they plate the food for you (think Chipotle or Luby's). I played it safe and ordered the Gyro plate. Don't let the price tag scare you off, the portion sizes are huge!!! I was particularly hungry this day and ate almost everything, and I did not feel bloated or sick afterwards. This is top quality food, and the plate could easily have been split into two portions. I love this restaurant and have been so concerned about their being able to stay open during all of this never ending construction. I encourage you to support them through this. I have seen businesses close because construction makes it more difficult for people to get to them. We definitely don't want to see this happen here. I'm not sure how this food has gotten decent reviews- it's honestly a terrible example of Greek food. Everything tasted like a fast food version of good Greek- like the McDonald's of Greek food. The gyro meat was dry and leathery he chicken was flavorless, the rice was absolutely repulsive, there was a "Greek meatball " the really tasted like it came out of a chef boyardee can and the Dolma.... absolutely not. The staff was really nice- and that is the only thing this place has going for it. It didn't look like much when I drove by, but it was where my friend wanted to go, so we went in. I haven't eaten in a Greek Restaurant since 1987, and that was a famous one in Dallas, so I didn't know what to expect. The ambience is low-key. No belly dancers or loud music. For a fast food cafeteria style Greek cafe this place is A-OK. They even have a drive through window. There is ample parking, plenty of seating (even a small section outside), and various menu options. The gyro meat is less greasy than typical gyro fast food joints. The portions are huge, and I tried a combo plate to taste a bit of everything. Most things are precooked and served up from the case. Most of the food was bland, but what struck out to me as the highlights was the gyro meat and the dolmades. The dolmades were served hot and tasted home cooked fresh. Day seven of our road trip to San Diego, stop 5. Passing through Georgetown, we were getting pretty hungry. And with about seven hours of driving under my belt for the day, I was getting restless. We weren't in the mood for any greasy spoon, didn't want any more butter lathered southern cooking, and were still trying to avoid the chains. For as much as Sarah and I are usually up for anything, when we're in the mood for "something", there's no knowing it until we see it. Speeding through the city we missed a couple of tasty looking spots until Sarah spotted it, the Plaka Greek Cafe, right off the expressway... score! Greek is exactly what the doctor ordered. We pulled in around 4:30 and the parking lot was deserted. I got very worried until Sarah pointed out the car in back, and the small OPEN sign in the window. Smiling to myself about how I was gonna KILL me some falafel, I parked the car and made my way inside. Plaka Greek Cafe is like so many Greek spots we've been to in the US, only slightly reminiscent of the great food we fell in love with in Athens, in Santorini. The name itself brought back memories of staying close to the Plaka in Athens just last November, and the greatest food I'd tasted in years at Manh Manh. It was a Modern Greek cuisine spot just a block off the Plaka and we ate family style, gorging our faces in silence as we all agreed that the flavors we were experiencing were so complete, simple, and thoughtful. Such flavors we hadn't experienced before, and would crave for the rest of our lives. Back at the Plaka Greek Cafe in Georgetown, TX now, Sarah and I split a Plaka Gyro combo. Ingredients fresh, meat perfectly seasoned, and the cucumber sauce the right combination of refreshing and creamy. The Greek side salad had large olives that I'm sure didn't come out of a jumbo sized can, and again the rest of the ingredients were fresh. Lettuce crisp, tomatoes ripe, and the dressing was tangy, and let the feta be feta. Hate it when the dressing itself is so overwhelming that the mild feta is lost in it. There really isn't much going on in Georgetown, however, Plaka is definitely a place worth noting. Their food is phenomenal and is very reasonably priced. We have been coming to Plaka as our "go-to" Greek place for about 15 years. Unfortunately the quality of the food and service is slipping during our last two visits while the prices have gone up substantially. The price increase I do understand, but the line servers are mostly new and don't put the same attention to preparing the food as the previous crew. The quantity is hit-or-miss on the gyro and chicken and the salads (which were our real favorites) are now smaller and "watery", not as crisp. This may seem like small things, but consistency was one of the hallmarks under previous owner and manager. Hopefully the current owner will get the message before others discover the declining quality. read more

Finally made it here and was not disappointed! Have lived in the area 20+ years and this is the best Greek/Mediterranean food I've found. My date and I went for lunch and decided to share the Plaka Sampler dish in order to experience several different items in one meal. First off, we both were hungry and the portions were enough to satisfy both of us. The Plaka Sampler features roasted chicken and gyro meats (both tender, juicy and tasty), spanakopita (very flaky and delicious), dolmades (stuffed with rice/meat and amazing), lima beans (the spice used is awesome), and tzatziki (rich and tangy.) Even the basic feta salad was crisp, fresh and satisfying! The pita bread was so tender and chewy, perfect for filling with the meats and sauce! Best of all, the price was unbelievable! I think I've died and gone to a heaven called Greece, or at least called the Plaka Greek Cafe. I have a deep passion for 'good' greek food. Notice the 'good'. It's just not that easy to find authentic greek food in Texas (or anywhere else I've lived) and I've never found any that comes close to what I had at Plaka. The gyro plate left me literally grinning from ear to ear. I cannot remember the last time I had such a wonderful meal. Everything was perfect from the salad dressing to the tzatiki. The meat was wonderful, pitas so fresh and hot that they were hard to handle. The meatballs and rice.. oh my! Everything had that authentic "homemade" flavor. After I ate until I was stuffed.. I still brought half of my food home. Plentiful portions, wonderful food, great selections, very clean restaurant, nice, friendly, GREEK people (which in my opinion is important in ethnic cooking!) and I can't wait to go back and eat 20 lbs of baklava. Well, at least a piece...maybe two. And some to-go. After eating here, it only reinforces my desire to visit Greece one day. Thank you Plaka Greek Cafe. Keep doing what you do because it's perfect. The Gyro meat was possibly the best I have ever had... it was tender, and yet had an awesome caramelized roast on the outside. The portion was HUGE.
