I love a good burger, I admit it. I'm not a burger snob - I like many different ranges of burgers, from White Castle to Union Square Cafe in Manhattan. And while my favorite local burger place in the Hartford area is Max's Burger Bar in West Hartford, Plan B is a very close second. There is no downside. "Burgers" include chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, salmon burgers, etc. and come with sides ranging from Parmesan fries to tater tots. Beer selection is delightful, cocktails pricey but generous and well-made. Their pickles - do ask for extra pickles! - are divine. Traditional burgers can be served rare or well-done, and you get what you ask for, unlike many restaurants who have seemed to redefine what "medium rare" really means. My favorite is probably the mushroom burger - sautéed mushrooms, mushroom spread, truffle mayo (which, to be fair, tastes little of truffles and just of mayo), lettuce, tomato. Pickles wonderfully on the side, and the aforementioned tots. All of the ingredients are freshly made, and though $13 may seem steep for a burger, it isn't when that burger is PERFECTLY done. The beef is ground by hand, cooked marvelously, and all of the accompanying elements done just right. The Parmesan fries are not really worth it (particularly when the tots are so good), and I wish they offered variations of chili cheese tots, taco cheese tots, etc. But good food alone doesn't make for a five star rating. Service at Plan B is friendly, helpful, and prompt. As mentioned, drinks are a good value though not cheap; they are creative and well made. Ambiance is fun and relaxed - it's an old converted train car with plenty of outdoor seating. Any issues - rare - are addressed appropriately by the manager and server. The pace and feel of the restaurant is very good. I never feel rushed, even when I arrive for a late lunch with my laptop and a little work to do. In short: Service - prompt, attentive Environment - lovely, fun Food - delightful Menu - creative, unique, not too quirky Specials - inventive and fun Clientele/Vibe - relaxed, not too fussy Plan B has long been a favorite of ours for lunches and dinners, casual drinks, date night, meeting friends. It has something for everyone, and delivers what it promises to. One suggestion (aside from the tots-loving request)? Please consider offering nachos, and in various forms. There is nowhere nearby to get decent nachos and craft beer! read more

I ordered the super salad to go. Very simple order but unfortunately when I got to work it was missing the dressing and piece of bread that comes with it. Very disappointing because I don't have spare dressing with me and I like the one that comes with this salad. One of the best burger joints in the neighborhood. The burgers are tasty, and the selection is definitely unique. I haven't had a burger I didn't like there, including your basic Tavern Classic, the Bacon Cheese, Porta Burger and West Coast. Other offerings like the Shepherd's Pie is also a good bet. Appetizers are also great. I have not seen Portobella Fries anywhere else and they were definitely a hit at our table. The American Nachos were sliced potato fries covered generously with your typical nacho toppings. Lastly, the tator tots - a must have! They are fried crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Oh Plan B. The Plan B of old had great service, great food, generous portions, and you didn't wait long for a seat. Lately, when I've gone in, the bartenders have remained amazing, the portions have gotten smaller, and it's become much louder. In addition, the wait is usually ridiculous for a burger. The burgers are outstanding. I usually get the Italian job, which is a chicken burger (ground chicken, not a breast) with roasted red peppers and mozzerella cheese. It's delicious. The sides are great, I usually get mixed greens, which are free, but you can also get a number of other sides for an up charge. The beer selection is ok. The bottle list is pretty impressive, but they keep best sellers on tap, and no micro brews. Stick to plan A or jump to plan C. Do not do [this location of] Plan B. I have been to this location of Plan B many times to meet up with friends and family. Why do I keep returning, though? I really don't know. You have your typical fare of Plan B with all styles and flavors of burgers as well as bourbon that the place is synonymous with. Bravo to the pretzel burger, most of all. And the food had been consistent, too. With all of the locations, there is really a lack of options for individuals who do not want to eat meat. Sure, there are some choices, but these are mainly salads along with fried sides and a chicken dinner or some kind of soup that likely has some form of meat in it, too. I feel limited as a person who does not eat burgers (or drink bourbon for that matter). Everything is pretty pricey here, too, so why would I shell out money for something I don't truly want to eat? Aside from this one drawback, I have two major tiffs with this location of Plan B. Most notably, the service. In all of the times I have visited, I have never received a good or kind server. Each experience entailed some degree of attitude and/or inefficiency. My most recent visit left a bad taste in my moth with a server who inattentive and only did as much as was necessary and who subtly pushed my friend and I to get more than we wanted to order. Example: I order a cup of soup and server says, "well, that isn't your meal." (Well, if there were more choices or if I wanted to get something else, then I probably would have ordered it.) Example (shortly after first example): server asks us if we want to see a dessert menu when we weren't even halfway through our meals. At least the hostess was kind and thoughtful to ask me if I was all right to handle the several stairs up to the additional seating area on my crutches. This leads me to my second major issue with this location. It is not accessible. Yes, there is a ramp up to the main bar and floor area (though some kind of lacquer is on it and dangerously slippery for those on crutches). But if you need additional assistance ambulatory, you can't access much more access to the facilities than that. There are several booths on the main floor of this renovated boxcar, but then several steps up to additional tables and numerous stairs down to the main dining room and the bathrooms. On this most recent visit, I hoped against hope that I wouldn't have to use the bathroom since I wouldn't be able to get down the treacherously winding stairs; luckily, I didn't. Problem solved--just hold it. I understand it's a converted building, and maybe it couldn't be helped to not have a second bathroom upstairs or an elevator, or maybe it was grandfathered in, but at least find some way to help those who already have a lot of work just getting around in the basic way that many take for granted or are not aware of. Honestly, other than the convenience in its location as a meeting place and that pretzel burger, I don't know a good reason to come here. It isn't worth my time, my hassle (particularly physically), or my money (specifically for the service). read more

This was the perfect spot to take a break from the bike trail which runs right in back of the train station. The cheeseburger with bacon, caramelized onions and garlic mayo was easily the best burger I've ever had. The crunchy half sour pickle was perfect as was the organic green salad that came in place of fries. The service was excellent as well. The "pink" level of doneness was right on the mark. I think the emphasis on the burger bar aspects may discourage non-burger fans from eating here. Party of four on a Saturday afternoon, located in an old railroad station. Very unique. A 10 minute wait and we are called in. We order a bacon cheese burger, a shepherd pie, a cob salad and chicken sandwich. A short wait and our order is brought to the table. The shepherd pie was really good looking and based the comments of the diner, it was awesome. The cob salad's diner was the table's fussiest eater and she said it was good. The chicken sandwich was a little rubbery with a crust that separated from the meat. The bacon cheese burger was all it was expected but the meat was a little smaller than expected. The wait staff was efficient but sometimes disappeared. The atmosphere was a little loud for conversation. All in all. A good place to stop for lunch. read more

Deeeelicious. We went here with my family for lunch. They serve pickles to start which is nice, They have a good beer menu and everyone loved their burgers and more. A few went with salads - they were huge with great toppings. I had the arugula with grilled shrimp - so yummy! My dad even got a burger on a salad. The mac and cheese also looked phenomenal. I have to leave a 5-star review to even out the 4-star review left by my wife. She takes her pretzel burgers very seriously. My burger was perfect (Mushroom and swiss), fries were very good, and the beer selection, oh the beer selection. The taps were very good. Some seasonals, some big time craft beers. The bottle list is very impressive, and would satisfy most beer nerds (some just cannot be satisfied). They list beers as light to dark IIRC, which is helpful, and they have a nice little list of bombers for sharing. They also mark beers as local and maybe organic/sustainable also. Nice touch. Upscale burger place in an upscale town with upscale prices!! Wife and I both enjoyed our dinners here. Its very attractive inside..much smaller than you might expect. Food was very good..service was excellent....and no loud music or loud people to ruin the atmosphere. Wife had a 9 oz. pour of pinot..I opted for a Coke. They start you off with a bowl of delicious pickles. I had the blue cheese burger...cooked perfectly(well done)...could have used more ingredients on top(stingy on the onions)....but the burger itself was out of this world good. Tasty and juicy. My french fries were crispy the way I like them..done perfectly. My wife had the turkey club and enjoyed it very much. She had the home made potato chips and said they were a winner. our server Sydney G. was very personable and eager to make certain all went well. Asked for mustard, waitress took another table's order, put order in computer and disappeared. Had to ask host for mustard, by then fries almost cold. Once and done for us. So what happened to Plan B? Maybe because it is Sunday...? If we could have given 2 1/2 stars we would've. We went with 3 stars as had some positive experiences in the past. Two burgers; One Tavern burger with cheddar cheese, the other a salmon burger. Both of the rolls were stale on the edges. Tap worthy on the plate. And this was not because they were toasted. There is a difference. Hamburger was requested as "pink," however the pink did not manifest itself until the last two bites. So the hamburger was cooked unevenly, and without any seasoning. The salmon burger was hot, but also needed salt to be tasty. The side salad came with very little dressing on it so all I had was a bowl of leaves. And I did not realize that the French fries would come as French fry bits (see picture). We had a choice to sit outside, however figured with the bright sunny evening we would stay inside. Might have regretted it a little because the table smelled like dishwater. The music was loud, and there was a high-pitched hum in the air, not sure from what. The waitress was very nice, however neglected to give us any silverware or plates to enjoy the complementary sliced pickles she placed on the table when we arrived. She was quick though to supply the needed utensils, and apologetic. When she discovered our dissatisfaction about only the burger that we mentioned, she offered a free dessert, which we politely declined. We have come to Plan B before. It is a favorite place for the locals in Simsbury, so perhaps complacency has settled in. Not sure at this point we will be back any time soon. read more

My wife and I went here for lunch today. Just craving a burger. We we're seated promptly and got a great little table downstairs , we ordered our drinks and lunch at the same time, service was quick and the water glasses were filled in a timely fashion. My wife ordered their homemade bloody Mary. When she got it she said wow, this taste like celery. I tried it and it tasted like celery salt. There was no spiciness about it. The burger was fantastic the truffle fries which we substituted for the regular fries were served warm. Not once during our meal did the waitress come over and ask how are meal was. After eating at the Plan B in Hartford (and being very pleased) it was nice to find another Plan B in Simsbury, so close to Canton where I was working. Plan B lived up to my expectations with another fine meal. The Cuban Burger was excellent. Hot, Juicy, spiced nicely and quite filling. The waitress was delightfully friendly. We ordered our drinks, a beer and a cocktail, and noticed the table next to us looking down at the floor and whispering.
