I began my Planet Fitness membership at the West Dundee IL location, then swapped to the Elgin IL location. I've been a black card member for a year and typically workout 4am-6am weekdays. I occasionally work out during a late lunch hour and on a Sat or Sun morning. Specific to the Elgin location: Pros - Well-lit, clean Womens rest room, reasonably nice/approachable staff, cleaner/paper towels reliably stocked. The monthly fee is reasonable. Cons - The air conditioning unit does little to remove humidity or cool the air to a comfortable temp suitable for exercise. The main free weight area (with mirrors) is small and lacks multiple sets of some weights; its always a struggle to get a bench and have room. People are not policed on the "wipe down the machines" policy (or simply don't understand the necessity of hygiene as a way to avoid infection as well as be considerate to hundreds of other people that day?). There is no adherence to re-racking one's weights, either. It's incredibly frustrating to move plates of 5, 10, or 25 to reach the 45s when there is clearly marked space for weights of each type. The attendees are lazy in this area and the staff does not police proper re-rack. I vehemently object to the summer program allowing teens to attend at any hour for free. Most teens have access to summer exercise programs through their school. At Planet Fitness this summer, I've been surrounded by listless teens clearly more interested in their TikTok, milling around in groups and sitting on machines, showing off to their friends or sweethearts by using equipment unsafely or using excessive weight. 90% of the adults who attend are focused on their routine and optimizing their outcomes. These teens are an unnecessary distraction, impede our ability to take care of business, and treat PF as a social hangout. Lastly, the location - with one way to enter/exit after crossing 4 speed bumps in front of a retail store or weaving through a parking lot is tedious. read more

Absolutely terrible experience at the Planet Fitness on Randall -- easily one of the worst gyms I've ever stepped foot in. From the moment you walk in, you can tell this place is poorly managed. The staff couldn't care less about anything. Half the time they're just standing around, on their phones, or talking to each other while members are left waiting or dealing with issues on their own. If you actually need help, good luck -- you'll either get ignored or get a lazy, half-effort response like they don't want to be there. The cleanliness is a complete joke. Machines are constantly sweaty, trash cans are overflowing, and it feels like nobody ever wipes anything down unless a member does it themselves. The locker rooms are even worse -- dirty floors, bad smells, and clearly not maintained regularly. For a gym that preaches a "judgement-free zone," they sure don't care about basic hygiene. Equipment is another huge problem. Machines are constantly broken or out of order, and it takes forever for anything to get fixed. Even when stuff is working, there's never enough of it. You end up waiting way too long for basic machines because the layout is cramped and poorly thought out. It feels overcrowded no matter what time you go. The environment is just bad overall. It's loud, chaotic, and not in a motivating way -- more like a disorganized mess. People don't rerack weights, nobody enforces any rules, and the staff just lets everything slide. It honestly feels more like a hangout spot than a gym. Customer service is easily the worst part. They make it difficult for no reason when it comes to memberships, cancellations, or even simple questions. It feels like they're trying to trap you rather than actually help you. No communication, no professionalism, no respect for members. For the price, you'd expect at least the bare minimum -- clean equipment, working machines, and staff that actually does their job. This place fails on every level. There are way better gyms in the area that actually care about their members and maintain their facilities. Save your time, money, and frustration -- avoid this Planet Fitness at all costs. read more

Don't trust this company, cancelled my membership on the 28th of the month for medical reasons. They charged my bank account $49 because I didn't cancel before the 25th of the month. I was a black card member that states it would charge a dollar for cancelling a account. read more

The people who go here are ghetto and don't follow the rules. There's always people talking on their speaker phones, people sitting on the machines on their phones, and people just hanging out. Obviously PF is not a high end gym...you get what you pay for...but it would be nice if the employees would walk around and monitor the clientele. read more

Not the best it's ever been. The gym is not well kept anymore. The girls bathroom will usually be dirty, like trash falling out of bins dirty. At night the crew is non existent. And in the afternoon the girls are not the best at greeting/making you feel welcomed. I've been coming to this gym for over 5 years. It has definitely changed. Not for the best. read more

Sadly a 1-not because of the staff or facility, but because of the corporate level. I was charged an extra annual fee of $49 plus a random $20 ($69 total) fee over a month ago when I switched my membership down to basic. I have tried 3 times to get my money refunded at my local gym. The staff do everything they can, but I still have no refund and no contact number available to resolve the mistake. SO disappointed in the corporate-level seeming lack of concern for its clientele. read more

Illinois has a mask mandate order in place and this establishment cannot respect or even try to enforce the rule. If the mándale is in place, it is for a reason. Yet, everyone around me had no mask at all. I think it would be a reasonable action if any one gets infected and went to this particular location, should be looked into taking legal action. Mask up or don't go to the gym. I went to the location at Schamburg and what a difference. Everyone at that location was masked up. Get it together Elgin! During COVID this has been the worst planet fitness location thus far. I would avoid it at all costs. There are about 4 sanitation bottles for everybody, in addition to no masking whatsoever. Past reviews will show that the club owner has never, and will never care about enforcing safety policies. It should be, and will be reported for mask non-compliance during a critical period of the pandemic. Schaumburg planet fitness provides sanitation bottles for EVERYONE and masks are worn by all members at all times. I'd recommend switching to/ going to that location instead, unless exercising in a Petri dish sounds like fun read more

Elgin used to be a great little gym. Now ladies locker room is never clean and there are very few people working. Deven is the only one who knows what he's doing. PF screwed up my account and I keep getting threatening calls and letters even though the club shows nothing is wrong. Deven did as much as he could but the manager will do nothing but refer me to the number calling me who is telling me to contact my club. My husband has been asking me to join him for a work out at this location , and I finally agreed. I was really excited to see what they had to offer, as I've heard great things. I hoped that being a month after the new year, all of the new years resolution members would have weeded themselves out. Now I've been to a few gyms in my life, including the beginning months of the year, so I'm not a complete newbie. And I've been in crowded gyms before but this place pushed me to my limit. We went at about 7PM, and it was packed, uncomfortably packed. Had me questioning what their legal maxiumum capacity is. There were free weight lifters exercising dangerously close to stable machines, where people were working out, and you couldn't maneuver through the aisles without going extremely slow. A treadmill runner almost toppled me when he quickly exited the treadmill. I did 10 minutes cardio, and only two weight machines and I couldn't handle it anymore. If you don't mind being cramped (with a ridiculous amount of chodes mind you), waiting forever for an open machine, or being able to smell what everyone around you had for lunch (not an exaggeration when everyone is packed in so tightly) then this is the place for you because you can't beat that cheap price ( insert eye roll). read more

Been a member for years. I toggle between Elgin and St. Charles locations. Both gyms are great, always clean and never too crowded. Equipment is good quality, modern and well maintained. Free wifi keeps the music flowing. Massage table/chairs are awesome too. If you're into classes, pools or power lifting, this isn't your gym, but for anyone looking for a well rounded workout at a super reasonable price, Planet Fitness is a great choice! I go to this planet fitness four times a week, and have been a members of three previous planet fitness locations. I have never been to one with such kind staff. The assistant manager, Tracy is so kind. He greets me by name, and Tracy even made special check in accommodations for me when I had issues with my phone. VERY busy all the time, equipment breaks frequently and isn't well kept *you get what you pay for* Their model attracts many customers with low prices and maintenance fees, you get a lot of people who aren't serious about the gym occupying the space and not doing anything but texting and socializing. I knew I would have to make some concessions due to the lower membership price and for a while I was satisfied enough. That was up until the cardio equipment was downgraded at the Elgin location. There's also no South Elgin location as some reviewers have erroneously mentioned. I have yet to visit another location so I don't know if it's the same everywhere in my area. The owners of this location though would not seem to use their own equipment enough themselves if they even have any power or way to influence the purchases made. You can't please everyone all the time but this many oversights just shocked me. I'll limit my complaints to just the one area for brevity. Let's contrast / compare the previous elliptical equipment to the existing... 1) The previous equipment held your water bottle at torso level while on the existing equipment it's below my waist. 2) A standardized 16oz plastic aquafina water bottle didn't fit in the open face style holder. Even if it did being open like it is, it can't secure the bottle from falling down. In my case, it fell and rolled underneath a pedal while the machine was in use. That's hazardous. 3) The previous equipment had the heart rate monitor contacts on the moving levers but the existing equipment only features this on the stationary ones. 4) I asked the staff for assistance with the program differences and they were unable since they decided to deploy the machines before training any staff. 5) They also replaced every elliptical in this location with this downgrade. Planet Fitness! Home of the Lunk Alarm! (that you will barely ever hear go off btw) Free pizza on the first Tuesday of the month! Free bagels on the second Tuesday of the month! Endless supply of Tootsie Rolls at the desk? What the heck is going on here??? I am a member of both this Planet Fitness and the Xsport Express in South Barrington, due to home and work proximity. See, I live closer to Xsport, but PF is on the way home from work for me, and for the low low price of $2.50/week, it can't be beat. I guess if you don't mind passing your house to go somewhere then you wouldn't need two gyms, but I always hate it when I have to pass my final destination(home) in order to reach my secondary destination(gym). It's complicated up in my head, you don't wanna see inside my brain. I know that Planet Fitness doesn't cater to the hardcore gym rat, and that's okay; but they sort of go nuts with it. Like, who are you trying to attract with the pizza? That makes no sense to me. This "gym" is somewhat limited equipment-wise, and that might turn you off if you think of this place as a place to build muscle, rather than to maintain. And don't think that I'm saying this because I'm a guy, the lack of equipment is lacking for the women who use them as well. The dumbbell racks only go up to 60. There are no free weights otherwise. No Olympic bars. Nowhere to deadlift. No shoulder press rack. No squat rack. This place is a glaring example of what happens when you don't actually care for your customers' fitness goals. Planet Fitness is here to make money, not to help you with your gains. As far as it being a judgement free zone, I laugh at those signs. They're being pretty judgy about the supposed "lunks" out there with their tank tops and gallons of water, grunting and stuff, who do they think they are? Planet Fitness wants every month to be for the January joiners with all their gimmicks. They probably hate it when people actually go 3-4 times a week and use and wear out the equipment. At $10 per month, I wonder how many people sign up and then don't go to the gym. Probably a lot? But seriously, if you're going to have a bucket full of Tootsie Rolls at the card/keytag scanner desk, how is that helpful? And if you have questions about the equipment and how it works, I wouldn't ask any of the staff members. None of them look like they've lifted anything other than something off the rack at he mall. Planet Fitness is fine if you know what you're doing and is convenient for use as a side-bitch gym. If you're serious about lifting, you'll be limited using this as your main squeeze. read more

Have been going here for a few months now. The machines work well, there's never a problem jumping on a treadmill and I've only heard the "lunk alarm" go off once. The locker rooms can be attended to more. Some fans would be great because at least the men's locker room has a lingering odor of sweat all the time. The showers are ... ok. Most of the staff are friendly, others really need to work on their customer service skills. The Trainers have a cocky attitudes! Bathrooms are dirty (floors, toilets, counters, mirrors, vanity area). Are they under new management because they use to be pristine? Last few times there the entrance doors were gross. Yesterday one of the staff filled 1 of 3 empty sanitizing bottles - all where in one spot. I guess he thought that was adequate...Only one small roll of cleaning towels (usually 3 large rolls - again all in He same spot). Most of the hand sanitizers were empty for a couple of days. In the past every time I was there, no matter what time during the day/night, there someone was always walking around cleaning the equipment and the floors, etc. I can't tell you the last time I seen anyone doing that. Always running into someone's used, dirty towels left behind and inside the cup holders of the treadmills, ellipticals, etc. Gross!!! How many employees do you need at the front desk at one time chit chatting with each other? It's a job- work! Or is just "easy money". Planet Fitness needs to step-up and start maintaining a clean gym. It doesn't happen by standing there talking to each other all day. $10 a month is cheap and it's a great gym. Not a good price if it's not being maintained well. I'll go somewhere else and pay more to avoid that. Membership renewal coming up soon. If it doesn't get better I'll pay more and go to LA Fitness. I know I can depend on a clean gym with professional, kind staff, there. Tip for folks - wipe down the machines when your done using them. It's a common courtesy and rude to others when you don't. I want to preface this by saying that the staff here is top notch. They're all incredibly friendly and helpful. My issue with this location is with management. Namely their lackadaisical approach to maintenance. One of their leg press machines has been out of order for almost 2 months, and now we're on week 3 of the ONLY Pec Fly/Rear Delt machine being out of commission. This lack of care with maintenance is honestly ridiculous. It's one thing when 1 machine is down, but you have a second one. It's another issue when they only have one machine, pretty much the only machine that works that muscle group, and there's no signs of them fixing it. They even threatened to call the cops if I didn't leave...a worthy attempt at best, however, jail time doesn't frighten me. P.s. two team members had also approved my membership. I mean a gym is a gym. Regardless of how big and fancy it is. Since I'm not much into lifting weights this gym is perfect for me. It's also good for a lot of first time who are not to sure of how to work the machines or where to even begin. They fancy themselves on being the judgement free zone which is nice for those who don't feel as confident as most. (No one likes getting kicked down even more) They are also very in expensive with also doesn't hurt the wallet to much! The perks of being a black card member for only $20 a months includes bringing a FREE guest with you every time and being able to use the massage chairs and tanning beds! How sweet is that?! ** note if you get the $10 membership these services are not included. The staff is also friendly and very very very helpful when it comes to answering questions or even taking you through a walks through of the gym. The place is also very clean from what I've seen. The locker rooms ( woman locker room at least) is always kept up and looking bright shiny and new. Also with the massage chairs, beds and tanning beds. Every first Monday of the month they bring free pizza for the guests and every second Tuesday of the month they have bagels. I guess another perk for people who like that sort of thing The gym has a stretching section, a 30 min a work out section the 12 min ab workout and then the main gym which has a variety of cardio machines and weight machines. I'm very pleased with this facility as well as the franchise. I travel extensively and I signed up for the black card, so I can visit any of their gyms. Their gyms are all over the country. I just signed up and have visited the facility in Fairview Heights, near St. Louis, which was a half mile from my hotel. The Elgin location is huge and very clean. I couldn't be happier with this gym and I'm very glad that I joined. You can't beat the price. read more

Regardless of what you think of their strange "no judgement" policy, this gym has everything you need to get in shape. This location is about 2 years old and the equipment is close to brand new. The locker rooms are clean and the members seem to be conscientious about cleaning off the equipment after use. There are 2 wifi connections at this location and work well. Front desk staff are friendly and a few remember your first name. My only problem with this PF is the shower stalls are not quality obscured glass and lacks the privacy you would expect in a public shower. There are no bosu balls, medicine balls or other gym equipment and the dumb bells max out at 50lbs. read more

Been a PF member as of November 18' and I have to say I enjoy all the new cardio equipment! They offer free fitness training that I haven't used just yet but suspect I will in time. They can set-up an orientation to create your own fitness program. A huge PLUS! The 30-Minute room is also beneficial to me when I have limited time otherwise I use the weight resistant machines. This location has helpful and friendly staff that also keep the gym very clean. I am a Black Card Member that can use the Total Body Enhancement, Tanning, HydroMassage and Massage Chairs. I was excited to find a gym relatively close to home that said they were practicing Covid safe procedures. However, I soon discovered there was no social distancing, no masks on 3/4 of the people using machines, and no sanitizing of machines between use!! When I spoke to the staff on duty, they informed me "masks only needed to be worn when moving between machines not while you were actively them and it was up to the members using the machines to clean them after each use" What??? I'm over 70 with health issues and this was not acceptable to me. Needless to say, I canceled my membership immediately and left. read more

The 30 min express workout is a joke. There is a specific rotation that goes on in this room. The green light means go and the red light means to wipe down and switch machines. I was about to sit down on the arm press and 3 random ppl walked in-not starting from the beginning #1 and sat down at the threes machines in a row in the middle of the room and stayed there. No one has any common sense to pay attention to what they are doing and it's ok. I went to talk to one of the staff members and he said as long as they are not in your way they can be there.
