My family I…read morehad the unfortunate task of organizing a wake and funeral for a loved one and happened upon Richard-Midway. It was actually the only local one we called (loved one passed away elsewhere) and we were certain right away. Jeff is the best at what he does. He went above and beyond to assist my family through this whole process, our meetings with him were hours long. I'm not familiar with any other experience to compare to, but he really did make it as smooth as possible under the circumstances. He facilitated the pick up of our loved one over an hour away without issue. He allowed us a private viewing before our loved one went to the crematory, to say our goodbyes. He reviewed all the necessary steps and kept us informed every step of the way. The evening of the visitation/wake we were greeted and assisted by Jeanette who was wonderful as well and really compassionate to our family and guests. They had all of our flowers set up beautifully when we arrived. It was nice to have the use of the whole funeral home for our service because there were small kids who were running all over the place and I imagine would be disruptive if a second family was also in the building having a service at the same time. They have a refreshment room in the basement with an automatic coffee dispensing machine in a room with some tables with chairs which was nice also. My family brought donuts. Our service was 3 hours which was the perfect length. The next day we had a funeral mass at Our Lady of the Snows church to which Jeff had everything brought over (we didn't have to take it from the funeral home the night before back home and to the church the next morning, he took care of everything) which was a huge help. Jeff did the readings for the mass as well. He was very warm and kind with my family and guests. God really made a special one with Jeff, we really appreciate him and all of his work on our family's arrangements. It really made a heartbreaking situation more of a beautiful farewell. My sister made the initial phone calls, and all went smooth. We met to finalize the arrangements on a Sunday morning and I really had no idea what to expect. Personally, I'd heard stories of inflated prices, funeral directors working the family's grief to leverage additional services and costs. NONE of those horror stories happened here. Andy was kind and businesslike- just what you need in this time. We had the facts, we had the choices we could make and he guided us through drafting the death notice. Everything came in at a cost that was at or below what we had expected. What impressed me most of all was how we were treated and even more, how my father was treated. We were given the space, and respect this occasion in our lives deserved. We were not directed or told how to do anything. The day of the service the gentleman that was there with us was also kind and helped us to give Dad a good sendoff. We were offered help in arranging pictures, flowers and music to our liking. Thank you Richard Midway for your service! You helped us in our time of need and I'm sure Dad would have loved it.

Though, as of now, I would say that point is moot anyway. But people should know before entrusting this company that their core beliefs (as I was verbally told by their representative, Sean) is that they are doing families a FAVOR by offering "cheap services and therefore they cannot provide 24/7 updates on the status of a cremation." I guess, to them, giving people updates on the status of pickup and milestones in the process means 24/7. For context, my dad passed away 2 weeks ago. When I was sold the services, I was told the average time for cremation could be up to 2 weeks given various factors, sometimes less and other more. This checked out with standard cremation info found online. I was also told they would inform me when my dad was picked up, the death certificate was signed/permits sent, and when my dad was in line for cremation. That seemed reasonable to me. I mean, who wants their loved one's remains out there in the world with no info or end in sight? But I have not been called once. Instead, I've had to call them every few days, which seems to really irritate them to the point I was told today by Sean that he could no longer talk to me. Then he said he was transferring me to Gerald, the owner, so I could leave a message, "though Gerald was only going to tell me the same thing." As of this moment, I've been holding for over 30 minutes while I write this review. As of August 29th (a week ago today), they have had the permits pulled and my dad has been "in line" at the crematorium, which is listed on their website as "on site," but in reality (according to Sean in a raised voice) that just means the property it sits on is owned by them, and is not physically on, next to, or even adjacent to the funeral home that I've been speaking to. To be clear, in the timeline I was given at the onset, I was told that once my dad was placed in line it typically took 3 days to complete the cremation. But as of now, my dad's remains are somewhere unknown to me sitting in limbo in a line that apparently hasn't moved in a week. Two days ago, when I called for an update, I was told by Alex that the crematorium was out of service for 2 days and she could not tell me anything more about my dad's projected cremation date. When I asked if this was a breakdown of something or planned maintenance, she said the latter, so I asked was this their only means to cremate people and why wouldn't they give families an update on a delay? Her response was that "it was only 2 days." I then asked for a call back. None came. Are we within the "average" time of receiving my dad's remains? As of today (2 weeks), yes. But there is no end in sight that they could provide. And at this point, given their demeanor, indifference, and even rude tone, I've lost all hope that I will receive my dad's ashes any time soon. I can only pray that his remains are handled with more dignity than has been shown thus far. They keep saying they have no way of knowing until the crematorium (place unknown) notifies them it has been done and a ship date back to the funeral home is provided so we can schedule a pickup at that location. I'm a firm believer that it is not our blunders which define us, but rather how we rise from those blunders. So, here is to hoping someone reaches out with an update and better service. As of now, my advice is this: If you are considering this place for your loved one, understand that they work in numbers and your person is only just that to them: a number. As Sean noted, they "process over 150 people a month and can't be expected to keep communication with all the families." I wish I was told this from the beginning, before choosing them. Spend the extra couple hundred, save yourself the heartache and the dishonoring of the person you are leaving in their care.

I chose Just Cremations at the recommendation of our Hospice social worker and they absolutely…read morelived up to the high expectations I had. They were professional in every encounter at a very difficult time. Prior to selecting Just Cremations, I contacted several more traditional funeral homes and I kept getting the same answers when I would ask about the cost. There was always a base price (which varied widely between firms) and then the extras started adding up - sometimes the additions were even more than the base price. Just Cremations quoted an all inclusive price with only two additions - a city/county fee and the cost for the death certificates - and that was the price I was actually charged. The final price from Just Cremations was materially lower than any of their competitors. If your situation requires more traditional funeral arrangements like visitation, wake, interment etc. then Just Cremations probably isn't the choice for you. At first I was a little put off by the name "Just Cremations" but after using their services I realized that their name is perfectly appropriate for what they do - and they do it as professionally and far more cost effectively than their competitors.

I give high praise to Cage Memorial. In 2023 they handled my mother's funeral service, navigating a…read morecomplex process. She lived in Atlanta, GA with a family member, until her death. Then we had her remains sent back to Chicago for interment. Cage Memorial worked with a local Atlanta funeral home to bring our mother home to Chicago and then arrange the usual and customary funeral arrangements. They were patient in dealing with our small family and navigating the requests of the three family members involved in making the arrangements. In 2025 our family decided to move our grandmother from a remote south side Chicago cemetary to the same location as her children. Yet again, this was a complex process, requiring special permits from the city and coordinating with the original cemetary to move our grandmother. These transfers only take place May to September, just to complicate things even further. Cage was so professional in their handling of the challenges in this process. They kept things simple for the family who do not live in Chicago, communicating via text, email and offering digital documents for signature. The family couldn't be there on the day of transfer, but Cage kindly took photos of the procedure. I have the highest regard for Cage Memorial and recommend them for you funerary needs. The quality of care and value of their service was high.
