Paradise Lost is a speakeasy tiki bar located on 2nd Ave in the East Village. A friend & I went there after having dinner at Spicy Moon a few blocks away. We wanted to have after-dinner cocktails in a chill space, so we searched on our phones & saw Paradise Lost address via Google. We proceeded to walk down & was unable to find the establishment due to their being no front sign. After walking back & forth a few times, we saw another group walking towards the door & they confirmed the place. We walked inside the front door pressed a "doorbell" & lo & behold we gained entry after the previous group went inside. Definitely an incognito entrance. Once inside that door there is someone to greet you, & take your information. There is a forest/ grass/ jungle-looking foyer/ hallway we walked down to get to the next door. Before we knew it, we were near the "Paradise Lost No Vacancy" neon sign w/ an arrow pointing towards the snake-shaped knob door. It gets opened & a supercool speakeasy awaits.... Paradise Lost has mixed style table / seating arrangements throughout the place. A bar seating section, booth-style seating area, lounge- style seating area, etc. We got there a little after 7pm, so the afterwork crowd was in full swing. Paradise Lost has interesting atmosphere. At times a Gothic / Medieval Vibe, meets place w/ shipwreck decor, meets eleganct /club vibe w/ beautiful ceiling lighting, etc. Music played in the background. Staff are friendly, energetic, & attentive. We were pleasantly overwhelmed w/ the vast selection of tiki cocktails that were on the menu. Paradise Lost also have an intimate selection of snacks/ food menu items. This included Popcorn, Tater Tots, Devilled Eggs Rangoon Dip, etc. We ordered some cocktails served in unique tiki mugs & a bucket of popcorn to munch on w/ our drinks. The popcorn is flavored w/ Sea Buckthorn & Browm Butter, which gave it an special flavor profile. Our cocktails were well-prepared & nice & strong. Paradise Lost has individual unisex bathroom stalls & a communal vanity & sink area. The bathroom stalls have spooky voices coming from a speaker as you use the bathroom. I was so humorously taken aback, it had me laughing when I came out...Definitely a different thing to experience in the bathroom - lol. Before we left we watched one of the bartenders do a cocktail "fire" presentation for some patrons in a booth seated area. Wow.... Paradise Lost accepts walk-ins only, no reservations. Very cool cocktail bar with super interesting decor. It's more of a gothic tiki bar with ska music than a traditional tiki bar which was cool but I found the music to not really be my thing but thought the decor was just so cool. The drinks were very interesting and creative. The seawater martini I will say was a bit too strange for my taste but I still thought it was good. Service was very good as well. Getting in felt unnecessarily hectic. It's quite clear that the host repeats their script often, encountering the same questions from confused people; instead of anticipating these questions with signage or adjusting the script, they instead wait for the same questions to be asked multiple times, and the vibe is a little bit like being lectured at after you've done something wrong. An actual speakeasy with few customers can be secretive and have quirky little rules about entering and ordering; in this case, about twelve people at any giving time were attempting the enter the bar--some putting in their names and some returning after they received "table up" texts--and almost everyone looked confused and a little bit ashamed after speaking to the host. I heard 6 separate groups complain about this experience on 2/14 when we visited. No one came to our table for twenty minutes. We sat with menu closed and ready to order and the server would not look our way. It became a little absurd when they checked their section multiple times and visited every table but ours, like there was a magical forcefield preventing us from being perceived. After putting an order in, the first round of food and drinks were delivered quickly and everything was great. In the second round they delivered a drink we if not order, calling it a mai tai. When I flagged the server back (actually, when I got up to talk to the server because the whole checking on everyone in the section except for us thing happened again), the server promised it was the right drink and that they simply had misspoken and put the wrong toppings on it. Server said "if you don't trust me I'll make another one." I was taken aback at this and felt a little manipulated into accepting the wrong drink, which I did. I know that's not what any owner, bar manager, or menu designer would want a server to do at an upscale tiki bar. Things like lime cups, mint leaves, and flowers aren't just decorations--they affect the flavor of the drink in addition to being an essential part the $30 charge for the experience of ordering them. I do not feel like I actually received my order. I had a good-ish time, but wish host and servers could be a little less certain that the are doing a good job and a little more interested in seeing that reflected in their guest's experiences. read more

I am a big tiki bar person and always make it a priority to visit different tiki bars when I travel. Paradise Lost has been on my list forever and I am so glad that I was finally able to visit. This is one of the ones that does a good job in both decor and drinks. The bar is really well done and has a great dark tiki feel to it. You really feel transported. Service was good as well. I have been to many speakeasies and many tiki bars but this was my first tiki themed speakeasy and I was not disappointed! We went on a Saturday night around 10 and there were 2-3 parties ahead of us. We put our name down and within 20-30 mins we were able to go inside. The entrance is super cool, and when you enter the main door there is a staff member who helps you with the standing/sitting tables or the bar. Their music selection is fantastic and lights are groovy. The cocktails menu is extensive and drinks range from 20-25 for individual tiki drinks (on par with most places these days) to 140 for scorpion bowls. We got 2 drinks each, one of which we had at a standing table and the second one at the tiki bar - which I would recommend over any of the tables! The drinks were very strong and you could really taste the alcohol so definitely pay attention to the number of skulls next to each drinks which tells you the strength of the drink. We didn't have any food but would come back for the drinks. This would be a great place to go with a group but go early if you are more than 3-4 people. read more

After dinner, my friend and I were looking for a bar/lounge and stumbled across Paradise Lost, so we decided to check it out. When we got inside, we were informed there would be a short wait, which was fine. They took down our name and number and said they would text us when the table was available. Roughly 10 minutes later, we received a text. When we returned, they asked if we wanted to check our bags or coats, and we checked our bags. You walk down a hallway with leaves on the walls, then through a fuzzy door, and you're inside. They also informed us of a one-drink minimum per person, which felt a bit odd since most people are there to drink, but it was fine. Initially, we were placed at a standing table since seating wasn't available yet, and we ordered our drinks. One thing I want to note: it wasn't clear whether we needed to order at the bar or wait for service. It would be helpful if the hostess explained that. I tried the "Saturn," and my friend ordered the "Mango Tree." The drink menu is creative but a bit overwhelming, with many options and lengthy descriptions. The Saturn was served in a cup filled to the top with crushed ice and tasted okay. My friend felt his drink was very strong -- which may or may not be a positive depending on your preference. After about 15 minutes, we were seated on a long cushioned bench shared with two other parties. I didn't mind too much, though I would have preferred a private table. Space was tight, and the person next to me bumped my arm a couple of times. There's also a drink presentation where they dim the lights and play jungle-themed music, which was entertaining. I absolutely love tiki bars, and I came across Paradise Lost randomly before a family dinner this past summer. I am so glad I did! I truly admire how committed this place is to the theme (total maximalists) and even before you even enter the main fur covered door. Darkly lit hall?? Check. Neon lighting??? Check. Fake foliage?? Check. Giant shark jaws?? Check check. Every aesthetic throughout this place is on point. The cocktail menu is very extensive and I love the breakdown it provides telling you what's in them (in case of allergies) and their potency. Speaking of potency, you should definitely try the Zombie! It's served in a fun Lilith tiki glass and boy do I love holding a busty ceramic lady. I've also had the Cobra's Fang which was yummy and strong as well. I love feeling transported away to somewhere warm and tropical, especially in the winter when I hate everything haha. Give me some fake sunshine and good vibes please! The only thing I did find strange was the music they were playing -- hardcore metal rock! I was not expecting that, but I guess it's good to switch things up every now and then. I'm sure constant tiki inspired music gets boring after a while. Managed to squeeze this in on a very "busi" business trip last week and it happened to be a pretty short walk from my hotel in the Bowery. What luck! I absolutely loved every aspect of Paradise Lost from entering the non descript door to finding a lush, tropical hallway that led to one of the coolest tiki bars to which I have ever been. As I usually do, I asked for the bartender's recommendation and he didn't miss a beat. He recommended the Saturn and let me tell you, that drink's presentation is possibly one of the best I have ever seen. It's on par of, if not better than, Hollywood's Tiki Ti's Toro's marching mechanical bull! No, it's better! Sorry, Ray! With the Martians, the planet with its rings and the FOG garnishes...WOW! And it's de-lish! Next up, I had the flaming lime thingy and I can't remember the damn name but it was amazing and again, another great showy drink more on par with others I have had elsewhere but still entertaining because...well...it's on FIRE. The bartender was great and my bar-mate was none other than (I didn't really know who he was until he told me) Ed Rudisell, the owner of Indianapolis' Inferno Room (which I also didn't know about because, well, I'm from L.A.). Ed was really cool, too, and was in town for some Tiki thing I didn't know about either nor did I have the time for. Ed told me I absolutely had to go to the Sunken Harbor Club and I did get there another night as well and it was equally as fantastic. Apparently the owner/bartender there (who I had the pleasure of meeting and ordering from) just authored a revolutionary recipe book perfecting cocktails down to the science of them or something and I'd say his were perhaps better tasting than Paradise Lost's if I had to be very picky but Paradise Lost's WOW/entertainment/garnish factor is better, for sure. Pretty fun and dope tiki bar in East Village. The door is a bit hidden as you check-in before walking down the long corridor through the fuzzy door. Inside is dark and intimate with a massive menu of various fun cocktails. Some drinks are a real show here as with most tiki bars. The tropical decor really immerses you to another world here. This bar was the only thing I knew I wanted to do on my trip to NYC, and it exceeded expectations. You enter by ringing a doorbell, and are greeted by a man in a stand who IDs you and explains the one drink minimum. You then walk down a hallway towards a neon sign, through a fuzzy door, and into the bar. Inside, although it is very dark, the vibes are great. Lots of cool, weird tropical decor- your eyes will not be bored. I ordered the Pearl Diver, which came decked out with a leaf, a flower, and a hanging umbrella. Very cute! It was tasty too. The drink menu is expansive and has illustrations of each drink next to the name and description so you know what to expect. We were also served water upon ordering. We got there around 7pm on a Friday and didn't have to wait to get in. We were put at a standing table for the first bit but were moved to sit at the bar when space cleared up. Well damn. I had heard great things. And despite the bar going out of their way to denounce tiki, I was still game! So we sit at the bar. No one acknowledges us. In fact, they are super aloof. I would go so far as to say, barely human. I order the Zombie. Pals order a Pearl Diver and an NA cocktail. My Zombie was incredibly bruised (watery). It literally tasted like Shave Ice. No Pernod, no Zombie flavors.... like whatsoever. The Pearl Diver was traditional. Honestly nothing special. And the NA was fine. Overall, decent tiki bar. Saturn, 20 This classic combination of Gin, Passionfruit, Orgeat, and Falernum won its creator, J. 'Popo' Galsini, the 1967 IBA World Cocktail Championship. We heat things up with Thai Bird's Eye Chili and a mixture of Hopped, Old Tom, and Navy Strength Gins. A couple of these and you'll start seeing little green men! ~4/5. Pretty tasty and nice presentation with the dry ice. Greenfuz, 16 Here it comes, baby! You better run! It's the Greenfuz! This creamy, nonalcoholic dream of Pineapple, Jasmine Coconut, and Pandan will make you jump to your feet! Not too fast, not too slow; the Greenfuz is just right. ~4/5. Decent NA drink with strong notes of pineapple, coconut, and pandan. Service was good, although it would have been nice to be seated initially instead of being given a standing table. Once we got in, the server wasn't really attentive to our needs - we asked for waters, but they didn't bring it until we reminded them. Disappointing experience last night. Bad attitudes and treatment by staff members. We were let in after a short wait and were told to stand in an area between tables while we wait for a table. When a cocktail table opened up next to us and I stood by it, assuming it was for us, a male worker angrily came over to told us to only stand and sit where we are told. Really? Get over yourself. The table then stayed open the rest of the time we were there with the same guy angrily watching us from the corner. The dude at the front check-in was also very rude. Such a fun spot! This speakeasy is loads of fun and hits you with this somewhat maximalist approach to tiki bar with a devillish spin (you'll see). The dim lighting, the theatrics, the music, the drama, it's really a unique vibe here. The drinks were really solid too and one of them comes with a blazing fire moment for the drama. It's a fun place to start or end your night, and a welcome addition to the growing speakeasy scene in new york. I would definitely come back here, even though I often will just visit a place once because of how unique it is. Welcome to hell, in the best way possible. Paradise Lost is where East Village cool meets theatrical chaos. This "tropical hellscape" is part bar, part fever dream, and somehow it works really well. Picture flaming cocktails, bat taxidermy, purple lighting, and the occasional howl when someone orders the right drink. I started with the Daywalker mocktail from the "Uninitiated" section (because not all demons drink alcohol). It was flavorful, refreshing, and still felt like part of the party. My date & I shared the crispy rum spudlets; basically elevated tater tots with black garlic caramel, cotija, scallions, and pickled peppers. Sweet, salty, crunchy, weirdly addictive. Apparently hell has great snacks. The rest of the menu reads like a Milton-meets-Mad Max fever dream, packed with cocktails rated by skulls (strength level) and illustrated with zombies. Order something like the Witches' Sabbath and watch the lights flicker and the soundscape turn into a full-on horror movie. Paradise Lost doesn't just lean into camp, it dives into it headfirst with demonic flair. It's self-aware, over-the-top, and way more fun than most "concept bars" even dare to be. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Amazing ambiance more memorable than the drinks. Can't say tiki bars were high on our list while planning our trip to NY, but we happened to chat with some people who really knew their tiki bars and recommended a few spots. We happened to be in the area so we kind of had to check it out. It's a speakeasy-ish sort of spot, with a nondescript door that opened into a long dark hallway, which was completely covered with fake plants. A neon sign of the bar's name was at the end, like some mirage--the on,y illumination in the hallway. There is a hostess window right by the entrance, and she will let you know if a spot is available. I forget if they take reservations but we didn't make any. We figured since it was still pretty early on a weeknight they couldn't be too busy. Sure enough, we were immediately instructed to go down the hall and enter through the door at the end, which was covered in fur (!), with a large lifelike snake-shaped (!!!) handle. So mysterious and exciting! The actual bar was more of a conventional tiki bar, albeit quite large with a lot of fun decorations. We each got one cocktail (alas, I forget the names), and while I recall we enjoyed them fine, they didn't blow us away or anything. One of the COOLEST tiki bars I've been to and some pretty badass staff members. This one was like a dark, grunge tiki vibe so I found that to be very unique. The bathroom had a button that you press and wait for something spooky to happen. Our bartender Ayeli was the coolest! You could tell she was a seasoned bartender and knew her stuff. We vibed with her and she made us some delicious tiki cocktails. I thought their menu was super dope and I wanted to try something different and got the one that used fish sauce. Drinks average around $25 with tax and tip, so come on a day you're ready to spend. The first time I went our waitress, Noa, was so friendly and so knowledgeable. She had a cool vest with all these trinkets. I love the vibe of the bar and how there are so many options. While I don't have the names now, here's my favorites: 1. The clear drink 2. Flavorful food, creative drinks, and a cool, dark, sexy, atmosphere. There are a few different types of seating; and even going to the bathroom there is an experience hahah. Look for a door with a green circle that says PL within it and ring the doorbell to get inside the restaurant. The food menu isn't huge, mostly bar bites, we tried the dumplings and chicken tenders. The drink menu is pretty large. I got the cobra's fang and my date got tita's mango tree. Mine was delicious and strong but went down easily, my date's was also good but you can taste the alcohol. If you have been wanting to escape from NYC's every day setting and go into a Tiki-Bar that has amazing decor and a Metal rock and roll vibe all at the same time, Paradise Lost is the place for you! Outside you just see curtains and their logo which looks like a rubbing from an ancient ruin. You ring a doorbell and they buzz you in. The host gets you set up and reminds you that there is a one drink minimum. You then walk down a run hallway completely covered in fake foliage. In between the foliage are glowing animal eyes! At the end of the hall is a neon Paradise Lost logo next to...seriously...a fuzzy door. The fuzzy door opens and you are transported into a world where Rock and Roll and Tiki Bars have collided! Staff wears leather gear, vests, boots, mostly black clothing, do rags etc. and if they don't actually dress like this IRL they pull it off well. Don't mistake the staff dress for gruffness. The staff is super friendly, patient and willing to explain their menu in detail. The interior has a lot of faux foliage, the staircase to the bathrooms has a giant shark head (with fake body parts behind it) and downstairs the sinks are carved out of rock as bars of soap hang on ropes. The presentation is very fun and unique! The menu has skull icons next to each drink indicating how strong they are. I had the Tita's Mango Tree which was two skulls. This drink features Green Mango-Infused Rye and Jamaican Rum, Blanche Armagnac, Mango Eau de Vie, Roquefort, MSG, Fish Sauce, and Mango Water. The drink was very unique. I was expecting mango to be the overwhelming flavor, but it wasn't. It was more of a supporting flavor with many savory flavors layered on top. The bartender was great about explaining gifts and was super friendly. I had a really fun time at Paradise Lost and would happily go again in the future. read more

I was infantilized by the man in the front wjth a cropped tank top. They had us standing next to food on the floor. Disgusting. They are slow to clean the tables and it shows. I love to travel and check out the local Tiki scene. A buddy of mine told me about Paradise Lost--he'd never been, but said it was getting lots of Tiki chatter so on my last trip to NYC I took the dive. From the speakeasy entrance to the rainforest tunnel that leads to the bar it's just damn well done. The decor is cool--shipwreck kitsch, bamboo wrapped in dark red tinted mystery. But where Paradise Lost really shines is their drinks. The menu is broad, interesting, represents the classics with their own special touch. I'm a 1944 Trader Vic's style Mai Tai snob. Theirs was arguably the best I've had--made with their own rum blend wrapped a roasted toned orgeat. Special shout out to manager Joe-El who took the time on a busy night to chat mixology and explain their Tiki approach. This place is killer and will be a must visit every time I'm in NYC. I am a total tiki obsessive, and am always on the lookout for a place with authentic tiki cocktails. Well, Manhattan's fabulous tiki bar Paradise Lost was right up my alley. This place was killer! Incredible atmosphere, fabulous tiki drink menu, cool munchies and groovy music. I loved everything about it. I had the Cobra's Fang (amazing!) and The Greenfuz (non-alcoholic! what a bonus to be able to enjoy a second cocktail and still drive home); my wife enjoyed the Pearl Diver. We will be back. This is a rare gem speakeasy I got to experience while it was low key. The entrance really is hidden in plain sight and as soon as you enter, you realize that the vibes are immaculate. I think this rum bar really stands out because it makes a spectacle of everything. The aesthetic of the place has a lot of effort put into it - you don't really see satanic tiki core very often. Service is really nice and knowledgeable. The normal drinks came out to be about $17 - $23, but I think they were worth it. They often come with some aspect that makes it photo worthy like the unorthodox shape of the cup, sparklers, straws, etc. (I just happened to get the most boring drink that didn't come with any of that ahah). My large group ended up getting one of the extremely large drinks which came with 8 straws in it (and the entire bar announces that a big one is coming with the sound of thunder playing). Paradise Lost is hands-down one of the coolest bars I've ever been to in my entire life. The second that my foot crossed over the opening door's threshold, I was amazed at what I was seeing. The gentleman working the entrance was so witty and played his character so well, and the hallway to the entrance of the bar caused me to swell with excitement. When I entered into the bar, I was not disappointed! The inside of the bar reminded me of a crazy luau party, and the inside was dark, but all of the fascinating objects were illuminating, providing for an amazing aesthetic contrast. The bartender was awesome as well; I wasn't sure what to get, and he quickly pointed me in the direction of a drink he thought I would like, and... sure enough, I did! Overall, Paradise Lost was an amazing experience, and whether you're visiting NYC or a permanent resident, this bar is a must-visit! read more

This place has all the tiki-Indiana Jones vibes going on. Had a blast and the bartenders were very attentive. I got the Zombie drink and boy was that strong!! I now understand why you can only get one of them read more
