There aren't many pubs in the area. I hope they survive long enough to get better. The Mac and cheese was fab. The burgers not so much. The tossed fries was more fries that got wet with toppings. We have been to Planktown several times now and I must say that the food is pretty good, however, the service is lacking speed. We were there for dinner last night and it took 30 minutes to get our drinks delivered to our table and when we finally could get our server to take our food order, it took another 40 minutes for it be delivered. This place is pretty cool,laid back, chill, good food good beer but SLOW (I even typed that slow to emphasize how slow) ;-) Planktown has essentially their own version o Guinness that is bout as close as you'll get to slurping the foam in a dewy Irish pub.it's good. It's a great place in Springfield. It has good beer and a great location and a fun staff but the food is a little below average from what you would expect at a similar establishment. I tried Plank Town last night with a Friend. As others have said, the menu looks great, but the items we received were disappointing considering the cost. We both ordered hamburgers, both were completely unseasoned and bland, and the fries were soggy. The atmosphere was loud and not a great place to meet up if you actually want to converse. Had the Bacon irish cheddar burger and a diet coke. The diet coke was flat and tasted odd. I reported this to the waitress, she said yeah they had had several people tell them the diet coke was weird in the last few days. Maybe .. fix it? Just had water. I could see the food window. My burger sat there for 8-10 mins before being taken to my table. The burger was bland.. the meat seemed unseasoned. I ordered medium rare, it was bone dry and not a hint of pink. The bun was gigantic, like twice the size of the meat. The fries were cold and not crisp at all, just sort of dark and burnt looking, but still soggy. They could have used some salt... or pepper, but they don't put that on the tables. Was my first time there and my last, can get a better burger anywhere else and for less than $13. Stopped here for a bite and happened upon a bourbon barrel aged beer fest, which had some excellent beers and a very reasonable price including glass snifters. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS Just plain awful. Here's how my 12$ veggie burger to-go order went. "It'll be 10 minutes". Show up 15-20 minutes later. Have about 3 people behind the bar pretending to do work. One of them says "Hey we'll get to you in just a second" as he walks away. A couple of minutes pass "I'll be right with you" as a second person walks by me. As he's briskly running by me I say "I'm just here for a pickup order". "Sure thing chief" he responds dismissively. 3-4 minutes pass. A third person claims they'll help me (they don't). A fourth person I haven't even talked to from the other side of the place then comes up to me with my order. She explains "Sorry there's a little bit of marrionberry on your soup container, someone had a little on your hands, I assure you it's not blood". GREAT THANKS!!! "Not Blood" always the best thing to hear on your order. At the same time the third person finally comes up and asks me if I need any help. TEAMWORK!! So I take the order home because I was hungry and was gonna give them the benefit of the doubt. When I get home there is "Not Blood" all over the napkins, the silverware, the sandwich box, the soup container, the bag, EVERYWHERE. I wish I had taken a picture it looked like a murder scene. Anyway, ever heard of WASHING YOUR HANDS? What kind of crap is this, if that were my employee they'd be fired. Anyway I was so hungry I dove into the worst stale disgusting beer cheese soup I had ever tasted, followed by the most disgusting veggie burger on the planet. We're talking the kind of thing that would make someone go back to beef after 15 years. Uncooked full black beans intermingle with some suspect green leafy substances and a mushy tasteless I have no idea what as well. DISGUSTING. I got the mushroom burger and right smack dab in the middle of the sandwich was a giant stem of a portobello mushroom with all the good part pulled off. The rest of the mushroom pieces were just as suspect. GROSS!!!! Close this place down, it's obvious after all this time and many "improvements", it's just as disgusting as when they first opened. This place is terrible,my wife and I went because we new the connection to block 15 in Corvallis, which we love. We went in at 4 their was 4 tables occupied . The waitress ignored us for 20 minutes , I even waved my arm in front of her. She finally cleaned the table and set a menu on the table. Finally after another 20 minutes I was thirsty we left went to hop valley and had service in less than a minute. Tried this place for the first time yesterday (Sunday early evening). They've done a lot of work making that old place look nice. The plank tables are cool. The chairs are cheap and uncomfortable. There are plenty of beers on tap to choose from, but they were out of my first two choices. They need a better way to update their tap list, like maybe a chalk board or sign above the bar? My wife and I chose to split a Cuban sandwich, and an order of crab cakes, and then at the last minute decided to get the deviled eggs as well. Who is this chef that decided they were going to reinvent a Cuban sandwich? A Cuban sandwich is pressed. If you don't press it and get the outside nice and toasty, and melt the cheese, then it is NOT a Cuban sandwich. We saw on the menu that it said it had pineapple in it, so we were prepared for that, but serving it on their big, soft hamburger bun, and without a pickle, is a mistake. It's an OK sandwich, but they should call it something else. The fries looked like they were cut by a blind person (no offense to blind people). Some were big steak fries, and others were thin shoestrings. Because of the variation in size they were not cooked evenly. They brag about their house-made catsup and they will bring you a little 1.5 oz cup of it if you like. It tastes like a tomato sauce, not a catsup. It's thin and doesn't have that traditional vinegary tang that catsup should have. I was reminded of Clark W. Griswold's classic line, "REAL tomato catsup, Eddie?" Crab cakes were actually deep fried crab balls. They were made with good crab meat, but they were a little smaller than a golf ball. They were a little too crispy on the outside. Two small deep fried balls for $12 is pretty disappointing. The deviled eggs were pretty good, but also small. You get three half eggs, each with a different treatment. One was a spicy brown mustard sauce, one was covered in julienned radish, and the other had some sauce I was not familiar with, but it was tasty. I would have been a lot happier with a little bit larger serving, for the price. The service was pretty good and the waitress was nice. She could have been a little more attentive, but that's a minor complaint. I hope this place evolves and improves the menu. It has a lot of potential and could be really good for downtown Springfield, but as it looks right now their on the wrong path. The chef is trying to do everything in a new, hip way, but I don't think that's what people want, especially in Springfield. read more

The measure of any good bar/tavern/pub house/etc. is their ability to make a good burger. The hamburger is simple, good food - anyone can make a good burger; pretty hard to go wrong as a meal choice at restaurant that you have never been to before. Or at least, so I thought. DO NOT eat the burger at Plank Town. The aioli is lacking flavor, the meat is lacking seasoning and the bun is over sized without good reason. I appreciate their desire to bring something new to Springfield - I really wanted it to be good. Springfield really needed this. But, If can't do a burger well - how can I trust that your trout, salmon or steak is going to be any better. The beer - not their own brew (any of them) was tasty. The service, our servers name was Penny - was anything but friendly and attentive. A Springfield brewery? No way! A Springfield brewery with great food and nightlife! We thought it wasn't possible! We were in for a delightful surprise! We went early and it's a good thing as by 5:30 the place was absolutely packed and people were lined up waiting. The decor is rustic and industrial - a perfect combination for downtown Springfield. The menu at this point isn't extensive, but that's fine with me. A smaller menu usually means better food, and it was true in this case! I had the rainbow trout with crispy polenta in a manchengo cream sauce. It was very good. I was with 3 others who all had the burger. They said the burger was quite good too. Service was friendly and helpful. Even being as crowded as they were, the wait staff was still attentive. Our only complaint and the only reason I'm not rating the place a 5 was the noise level. It was nearly impossible to have a normal conversation. We had to shout to hear each other. Perhaps some wall decor or other means to absorb the sound would help. read more

What a great find! We had Sunday Brunch there today and it was absolutely wonderful. My husband had the crab omelet which was loaded with real crab, not that fake stuff. We also shared a "Dirty Salad with Roasted Beets" and a burger. Both were delicious. The service was spot on and with $8 growler refills on Sunday I know where I'll be going for Sunday breakfast/brunch/lunch because the beer is pretty darn good as well. Oh and the place is spotless. Went there last night as the restaurant we wanted to go to was booked. It was incredibly noisy to start out with. I ordered the po'boy. The oysters and shrimp were good but the roll it was served on was so soft it fell apart before I had a chance to eat it. If the roll had been toasted first it probably would have been much better. I got a side salad that was supposed to be dressed with a roasted garlic dressing with balsamic but I couldn't detect any flavor of garlic or the sweetness of balsamic. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich that came with a flavorless beer cheese sauce. His sandwich was dry and needed some other kind of sauce. His fries were barely warm and soggy. Afterward, we had a chocolate peanut butter pie that was totally delicious and a slice of vanilla cheesecake that was very good but the sauce on the side was pretty icky. Never been impressed with this place. First time my hubby and I went in it was late and slow. Service was AWFUL!! Waiter was so busy talking with the bartender that we were waiting FOREVER for things like drink and water refills. I finally gave up after 5 minutes and went up myself and stuck my nose in the kitchen window and asked for some ranch for my fries. The waiter was all over me then, kitchen staff said, "Ask your server", to which I said, "I would have but he's too busy talking to the bartender." When he finally brought my ranch, he actually argued with me and said he was talking about work with the bartender. I could really care less, bc you first job is to take care of your customers. Food was very mediocre. Can't see why everyone raves about this place. Second time I went in was last night, will be my last....I took my 23 yr old DIL who is still trying to find out what drinks she likes. She likes things on the sweet side, as we all did when we were young right? Anyhow, I ask the waiter if she can have an old fashioned, but on the sweet side, like put a shot of simple syrup in. He said, "There is no way the bartender will do that." I was shocked! So shocked I was speechless. Really??? Okay what would a sweeter drink be? He brought back a recommendation from the bartender that ended up not being sweet at all, I could tell that she choked it down bc she was being polite. My thought is I'm paying you $11 for a drink, make it the way I ask please. It was so pretentious!! It's not like we were at the Ritz Carlton or something!! What the bartender at a brew pub is soooo sophisticated that it's beneath him to adulterate a drink by sweetening it up for a customer??? When they served our french fries, he stood behind the corner of the booth and reached over the corner of our booth from the back side. Really, that's how you serve?? I really want to like Planktown. I like their atmosphere and I dig that there's a cool new brewery in a very sketchy part of downtown Springfield that I normally wouldn't go to. Unlike some breweries, all of their food is made from scratch. They even make their own french fries, which elates me. I've been happy with everything I've eaten here. The service though is horrible. Even if you are sitting at the bar it's like pulling teeth to get a waiter/waitress for anything. It does get loud and very busy. I saw a horrific scene occur there the last time I patronized the establishment. Someone I knew was there for a 6:30 reservation for seven people. I wasn't apart of their group, but saw there were no tables open except all the high tops around the bar and a table of three had just been sat at an eight top. My friends had to wait over 40 minutes for a table, which ended up being three little tables pushed together; they barely fit. Another incident was one someone walking by knocked a glass off the bar. It took them a little over 8 minutes before someone came to clean up shards of glass. A little horrifying and makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. read more

A group of about six of us decided to try this place on a Wednesday night. Plank Town is a good name as you pretty much sit on planks. But it's not like we were at a fancy resort-it's Springfield casual. Except for the price. More on that later. Staff were very pleasant and working hard. The place was pretty full with about 90 people there (listed capacity is 96). And everyone was basically shouting to be heard. Can any restaurant open with a concern for acoustics? The place has bare, shiny walls and ceilings, glass and a concrete floor. Sure, three of us were bald guys, but how much echo does that make? Plank Town, add some local softness. Maybe quilts? The food was much better than I had expected. I tried the fries with garlic and the sauteed mushrooms. The two orders of burgers were well received, even with the chard instead of lettuce. I guess if they grilled the chard it would be charred chard. Anyway, now to the price. The mushrooms are $9 and the rather small crab cakes (they are usually small) were $12. So that's $21 if you go that route. Add a $4.00 beer and you are at $25 per person. Add a tip and it goes to maybe $29. Double that for two and you pretty much have a light dinner for $60. No dessert. Maybe stick with the burger and fries for $10 plus beer for $14 each plus tip at $3 for total of $17 or only $34 for a couple. read more

My wife and I went and had dinner and a beer a couple weeks ago and were so impressed we went back again. Both times we ordered the Bacon Irish Cheddar Burger and the Apple and Pork Dip (both excellent choices). The first time we both got fries, which were good but not spectacular. The second time were each got soup which was a nice change. We tried a number of beer samples, all good, but I highly recommend the barrel aged Hobbit's Little Helper. A nicely restored building on the Main Street of downtown Springfield. The brewery is onsite. A large variety of ales to choose from. My husband is the beer enthusiast and I'm the wine drinker and happily enjoyed the house Cabernet . Service was great and the menu was a nice variety of good and some healthy pub food.
