I went to Planter Paradise for the first time today, on a tip from a friend. WOW. The selection is great bordering on overwhelming, and the quality is very good. Most of their inventory is probably intended for outdoor use, but there's plenty suitable for indoors, too. They also have a very nice collection of reasonably-priced, healthy succulents. The friendly, laid-back attitude of workers plus the rural setting make this a very comfortable place to browse. I spent a very peaceful hour wandering around the grounds. As for the prices (plants and planters), I don't think Planter Paradise can be beat. That goes for all the big hardware stores and discount stores. It goes double for Canyon Pottery, where you have to wonder how they keep a straight face when they mark the prices. Well, their straight face is more like a smirk. There was a slight scratch or discoloration on the side and without asking one gentleman touched it up before helping us load into the van. They also had a good selection of succulents, I was able to pick up my Madagascar palm with a glazed pot. Honestly I could spend more time there. Getting there was super easy (I-8 east to El Cajon then one turn to Chase I believe.) It was a 25 minutes drive from Scripps Ranch but we will definitely do the drive to get down here again. read more

It was my first time to visit and shop at Planter Paradise. It seems to be a hidden gem, because it's in a location that is off the main areas of El Cajon, CA. They had quite a selection to choose from and their prices were reasonable. They even had a nice selection of succulents, too. I went home with a nice small Talavera planter and some succulents. We found this location on yelp and went based on the reviews. My wife and I went to this location twice. The first time we attended to check out what they had available and saw a number of things that we liked, but we had to go home and take a number of measurements so we could accurately get the pot sizes that we needed. We didn't speak to anyone at this time. We returned a few days later (last week) with the intent to spend approximately $500 that day to buy 4 or 5 very large lots. One of the planters we were interested in was a timber rectangular pot, but when we went to select it, we realized that the planters depth was not quite suffice to a trellis we hoped it to accommodate. I approached the office/hut to ask whether they had the means to order something closer to the measurements that we needed... this should have been very simple and straightforward transaction, instead I was met with the rudest elderly guy who had the worst attitude and told us that he would rather be eating lunch than dealing with us. I have never been treated like that before. I honestly was shaken with how rude he was. At first we thought he just had a really dry sense of humor, but it only took a minute to realize he was actually serious and was intending to be rude. I asked my wife a number of times whether I said something that could have offended him, trying to figure out a reason for his nasty attitude; but all I literally asked was whether they had a supplier with a bigger wooden planter (so we could place a special order) and explained what we were intending to put into it. He never even answered my question. Needless to say, the other 4 pots that we had intended to buy, we didn't bother with and instead took our business else where straight after and ended up getting exactly what we needed. I even ended up tipping the guy that helped us where we purchased our pots, just because he was so helpful and pleasant after the experience we encountered here. There was another man (younger) that worked there that we observed as he helped someone else while we dealt with the rude staff member and he seemed pleasant, friendly and helpful to the folks he was assisting. I wish we got him! So I dare say they do have atleast one staff member who is willing to help customers... but you couldn't pay me to go back here after our experience. read more

PLANTER PARADISE lives up to its name. They have gazillions of beautiful, colored pots in different sizes and shapes, and a wonderful array of garden items. During certain times of the year they sell unusual succlents. I love this place and drive quite a way to get there. The prices are very reasonable, too! I waited until my second trip to Planter Paradise before writing a review. First time, about a month ago, was most likely not a normal day. Robert, the owner, was working alone, there were lots of customers vying for attention, a huge delivery truck had arrived, and inventory was low for the kinds of pots I wanted. Nevertheless, I went home with 3 beautiful pots and was pleased with the prices and with the care that was taken in loading them into my car, despite the shortage of employees to help out. I made the trip from Valley Center to El Cajon again today and had a great experience. Four employees on hand, all very polite and helpful, lots more inventory. This time I came home with 9 more beautiful large pots. I particularly like the selection of pots with unique glazes and the prices cannot be beat. It's a good thing I don't live nearby or I'd be checking out the new arrivals all the time! read more
