The first come first serve sites were almost all empty Sunday-Wednesday mid July when I visited. The creek is beautiful and there are lots of good swimming spots. We stayed with friends in a group site and several single nearby sites. There was plenty of space and fallen trees and meadows for our kids to explore! The bad: Idk why but checkout and checkin are both at 2pm, so the sites aren't being cleaned fully between uses. There was a bit of trash at ours and we almost overlapped with the group there before us. The dumpsters were full the entire time we were there. So many yellow jackets and mosquitos, but that's summer in California near the water for you. The worst, there were several bears that made the rounds scavenging every night. We heard them sniffing around tents, banging around coolers, and people generally letting off foghorns and screaming and dogs barking all night long. The campsite is not equipped for bears. The hosts are doing their best, but this is their first summer with this problem, and they aren't receiving support from fish and wildlife. There are no bear boxes at the campsites and very little signage anywhere alerting people to store all their containers and food out of reach at night. People are also not helping. We talked to one family with their food out and said to pack it up as there were bears out the night before. They said they had been coming to the campground for years and never seen a bear. They didn't pack up their food at night and the bears got it all, and they had to leave the next day. The stupidity was astounding. Overall, I would recommend it except for the bears! Hopefully the government steps up to give the host more support before something serious happens!

All spots are on a steep incline. Majority of park occupied by full time campers living. A lot of marijuana smell and odd people coming out of campers at night. RV spots very narrow so no space to set up unless you do not mind picnic table over other rv spot sewer hose. No service at all so make sure you bring everything you need. The pool was over occupied which is probably due to complete lack of space or sitting for anyone. The putt putt golf was basically dirt. E-bikes very dangerous unless you are a pro because of the steep slopes. No paths for walking. I'd recommend trying anything else first. The drive is pretty long and winding so really not worth the drive.

Tables and water spigots to rinse off dishes and feet and little kids too were provided at our site, very helpful. We also had our own small amphitheatre/firepit with lots of benches to sit around it I would guess about 30 people would be comfortable sitting around it. Although no fires were allowed due to Californians most recent droughts and wildfires. REMEMBER; Non potable water comes from the spigots. All drinking and cooking water must be brought in... Non potable means you can't drink it. Vault toliets- That means= Outhouse! Bigger and nicer than most but it still doesn't flush! Firepits are there, but in drought conditions we pretended they weren't there. We had fire rings for s'mores & such. Each different campsites comes with an Attendant to report problems, they pick up garbage & replace TP in those vaults. Basically the manager at each campsite to reduce issues. Ours was a really cool guy named Steve. The lake itself is gorgeous, fairly empty and looks a lot like Tahoe with the humungous boulders. While we were there the boat launches were a nightmare due to the low water levels in the lake. Although the lake was still absolutely beautiful for swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, fishing and a million other activities you can think of. Also the stargazing is amazing the night skies are beyond stunning the elevation is high enough and its dark enough to really enjoy that too! It is a very beautiful and tranquil campground. It is called "group" because you are allowed more people but parking is limited at each campsite and nearby parking lots are fairly close. You could walk around and still not see or hear other people at nearby sites... Very tranquil.

As the campsite location that we stayed at only offered one outhouse. Which means non-flushable man hole and no sink for washing hands. Surfer looking for that true rugged tent camping lifestyle here's the place to be. From the campsite they were at we're probably about 15 minutes from the actual Bear Lake resort campground which offers a lot of amenities in their little neighboring area. In back of our camp site was a little creek that we walked down to and enjoyed the beautiful view for a couple of hours while panting for Gould. The weather was beautiful during the day it did drop down to low 50s in the night. Lots of beautiful wildlife we saw squirrels, two deer, and plenty of birds flying around the night view of the stars was just amazing. Going down to the lake was just an amazing view lots of people out enjoying the water their boats and other fun festivities over the Fourth of July weekend. For sure a grand time while we were there.

Also if you are at lot 20/21 you are RIGHT by the entry for off roading people who are on the way to do the rubicon trail. Loon Lake? More like ANT Lake!…read more Went to this campground with my husband last weekend. I would highlight how pretty the place is, but unfortunately the campground design had many flaws. First, the elevation was pretty high, so right away, we were noticeably winded even after the shortest walk. They should really consider lowering the campground. Then, we went to sit on the lakeshore, and what did we see?? Not a single loon, but THOUSANDS of ants. Less than 5 minutes after I laid my towel down, it was covered in ants. Turns out there were several ant hills....ON THE BEACH. This is an unacceptable flaw in design. I would suggest the camp hosts or Forest Service relocate the ant hills, so that people can actually enjoy the shore. Just as we were settling down later in the evening and trying to sleep, I heard someone making a God awful owl hooting noise, from high up in the trees. It was very obnoxious. And I know it wasn't an actual owl because birds aren't real. All in all, it's a pretty place but I'd recommend visiting a campground that values comfort and caters to your needs. There is also a cute food truck near the visitor center that had the best garlic fries I have ever had. North Grove was really great for families with smaller kids. The hike wasn't too strenuous. My family has been camping at Lake Camanche every year for the past 12 years. What started with…read morebabies, including one who was only 3 months old, has become a cherished family tradition. We typically camp with 40-55 family members, reserving multiple campsites and group sites to accommodate everyone. Many of our children have literally grown up camping here, and this annual trip has always been something our entire family looks forward to. This year, our group included nearly 60 people of all ages. We reserved multiple campsites and a group site, stayed within the occupancy limits, and paid for additional vehicle parking. We expected another fun weekend together, but instead it became one of the worst camping experiences we've ever had. On the first morning, we made a mistake. We woke up too early while preparing breakfast, and our music was too loud. A ranger responded to a complaint, and we immediately apologized, accepted responsibility, and made sure it would not happen again. Unfortunately, after that interaction, it felt like we were under constant scrutiny. Rangers repeatedly drove past our campsites, slowed down to watch us, and frequently stopped to tell us we were too loud even during daytime hours when quiet hours were not in effect. We were not throwing a wild party, we were simply spending time together as a large family. We lowered the music whenever asked, did our best to keep conversations down, and complied with every request. At no point were we told what specific daytime noise standard we were supposedly violating. The second night, we observed quiet hours after 10:00 p.m. and the next morning we remained quiet until after 8:00 a.m. Despite following the rules, the repeated drive-bys and warnings continued. Had the ranger simply asked us one final time to lower the noise, we would have gladly complied as we had throughout the weekend. Around 7:00 p.m. on our final evening, one family member was setting up a camera for our annual family photo. We had not yet gathered as a group. As a ranger drove by, the camera happened to be pointed in his direction while the angle was being adjusted. He stopped, accused us of recording him, claimed we were still too loud, and informed us that we were being evicted because we had already received two warnings. The sheriff was called, and we were given only 1 1/2 hours to gather nearly 60 people, pack multiple campsites, and leave or face arrest. The way this was handled was heartbreaking. We hadn't even eaten dinner. Our children overheard repeated statements about being arrested, became frightened, and several were crying. Instead of remembering our final night together, they now remember being rushed out under the threat of arrest. What hurts most is what they interrupted. The children and young adults had planned a surprise dinner for all the parents, aunts, and uncles. After years of watching the adults cook, they were finally old enough to take over the kitchen themselves. It was supposed to be a milestone after 12 years of family camping. Instead, it became a memory of fear and heartbreak. Beyond our experience with the rangers, we also noticed that the campground itself has declined. The restrooms were dirty even after staff had supposedly cleaned them. Two sinks remained clogged, toilet paper was left on the floor, and the restroom floors were still filthy. While cleaning the restroom, a staff member loudly yelled at several of the women in our group instead of speaking respectfully, making an already unpleasant experience even worse. We understand that campground rules exist for everyone, and we accept responsibility for our mistake on the first morning. However, there is a difference between enforcing the rules and making guests feel targeted throughout their stay. If large groups are expected to remain nearly silent during the day, then perhaps the group campsites should be located farther away from individual campsites. After 12 wonderful years of making memories here, it is heartbreaking that our family's tradition ended this way. We will not be returning. Thank you, Lake Camanche and EBMUD, for turning what should have been another joyful family reunion into an experience our children will never forget... for all the wrong reasons.

Camp…read morehosts are so friendly and helpful, they're working really hard to keep the place clean and running smoothly. Be kind to them. There are definitely BEARS. the Bear horns DO. NOT. WORK. bears are acclimated to hearing the horns. Your best bet is to keep everything in the bear box, as much as possible. And when you make dinner, do it early, and cleanup early. If a bear comes around. BANG the bear box, with a metal water bottle, or something like that. Yell, get big AND get out of the way. Campground is beautiful dense with trees, fairly well spaced, most people are really kind and respectful. It is mixed use, so RVs and tents together. The lake is exquisite. Water temperature perfect for swimming. Do bring water shoes as the shore is a little rocky.
