Worst Platos Closet ever!! I am from Tucson, AZ, where there are more people than the entire State of Alaska. The ones in Tucson are always buying or giving store credit. This Platos is never buying and seems like never taking clothes at all! I have been trying for over a year to bring clothes and it was alwaysthe same message, "try again in two weeks" and again in two weeks, the same thing for over a year.. then finally it was "we are taking clothes on Sept 8th" I go and guess what... they are too full to accept mine. I am beyond annoyed. I will never go back to Platos again. read more

They don't do refunds only store credit. They dont mention that when asking in advance the store policy.The employees are unaware of their own rules. This place is ridiculous the first time I ever came in The owner tried to self diagnose me with some kidney allergy bs. Mind your business and stick to the career you chose. Change the "rules" YOU typed out and printed if you want any returning customers. The new owner has a stank attitude and overall the shopping experience sucked. Don't go here looking for a deal or thinking things are priced for being second hand. I'm a shopper, high end retail, the average thrift store, department stores high end thrifting. I have purchased $200 jeans why would I buy used for $150, average Jeans $40 and $50 is ridiculous. I swear Target sweats for $20 and $18 no name joggers. $16 used fleece pj pants. I always try to buy used. Once I discovered Plato's Closet 11 years ago I pretty much quit shopping anywhere else for clothes, shoes, and accessories. They have so many cute clothes that are affordable! I always get compliments on my clothes and it's because of Plato's closet! The employees have always been super friendly and helpful. Today when I was in there I spent quite a bit of time since I no longer live in town. The owner Allen was super nice and helpful. It was great to meet him today. His amazing employees are usually the ones I have encountered over the years (I guess he's owned it for several years now he said). Hannah was the one that helped me today and to be completely honest she made the best clothes shopping experience for me today! I get super stressed driving around looking for what I want/need in general so it's really nice to make one stop while in town and get the clothes that I need. The selection is alway amazing! Very well organized. A lot of which has the original tag on it! And the price is always fair. I have sold clothes to them once before and it was a super easy experience and great that I could use the credit to get more cute clothes! I brought my boyfriend with me today and he found some clothes for himself. I didn't take photos of the clothes I bought but I did take a photo of this WARM winter jacket. Someone go grab that thing! Rudest staff ever! Last time I went was during a mask mandate and it seems like non of the staff know how to wear a mask! I was yelled at by one of the managers for not knowing how to enter in my information for dropping off clothes. they did a half-a** apology after they asked if it was my first time with them and I answered yes. I would not recommend selling to them, the payout is always low and you will get $20 for two whole bags of clothes!! read more

I have been calling once or twice a month to see if they are taking in clothes again. I always get the same answer, that they are overstocked and not taking items at this time. Seriously, they haven't reduced their inventory in an entire year? I was going to be in the area this past week and put a bag of clothes in my car to see if they would take them as a walk-in I got the same answer, that they were not taking items at this time. This didn't ring true as their entire staging area was filled with bags that had been brought in, either waiting for staff to go through or labeled with name tags for people to pick up- I know their procedure as I have brought items in before. Anyone who coaches their employees to lie, or refuses to take what could be items that would easily and quickly sell deserves to not be in business. read more

If you want fair clothing with a smaller pricetag than you would find at the brand store of a garmet you like, Plato's Closet is your store. I have been here a couple times, each time I picked out one thing to buy. I bought some nice shoes for an interview, very nice! The second time I bought some AE pants that fit me very well. My reason for docking it two stars are the two reasons that follow: Employee's: Everytime I go in, I find a reason to not be happy with the workers. A young man, with his hat on crooked, checked my sister and I out at the register. He pretty much stuck our clothes in a pile to put them in a plastic bag. As the card was authorizing, I took it upon myself to fold them nicely hoping he would catch on to the idea. I am safely assuming he didnt because he was staring off into space the whole time I was folding. The girls all act like they are having to make themselves be in a good mood. They will thank you for coming in but be snotty at the register. Selection: To find a good pair of jeans or anything for that matter, you have to dig through a lot of other stuff. Only come in here if you think it is worth it and you have the time. I do on occasion find and have found some pretty nice stuff. It is just few and far between. read more

I stopped in here after going to Second Run to sell some designer items. The woman at the desk who I later found out was the new owner, was super nice and quickly sifted through my items while I was browsing in the store. I noticed everything was sorted very nicely, the clothes were in excellent condition, and that they had some designer or upscale brands like J Brand, Free People, Marmot, Lululemon, Max Studio, Etc. I noticed a few silk tops and was like wait a minute something is different here. I asked the woman who was going through my things if the store happened to be under new ownership. She said actually yes it is and she is the new owner. I told her the changes I noticed and how refreshing it is to see how clean the items are and the nice brands they're taking. I usually stick to the designer consignment places but will definitely be back. read more

The store was very organized. The two young ladies were very nice and helpful. they had a large selection. Over all enjoyable visit.

I was checking out with one of the cashiers. One of the managers approached me as they were looking at the items I was getting. The manager stated that the two items are were getting were priced incorrectly. The women then proceeded to change the price one item I brought was to be $15 she changed it $30 stating that the new cashiers don't know what they are doing. She then proceeded to change another tops price from $10 to $60. I will never shop there again the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Went to sell clothes to them, Dropped off a bag of nice clothes that were mostly new. I washed them right before bringing them in because last time they said they couldn't buy them bc "there is lint on them". This time they said it's not our brand, there is a snag and most of them are worn out. All the clothes they gave me back were balled up and shoved into the bag. She starting talking about how the virus isn't real, wrote down a conspiracy theory website and offered it to me. To which I said no thanks I look at Mayo clinic if I have questions. She asked while wearing her mask only over her mouth with her nose out, why anyone would get the vaccine if it's only 95 percent effective. Unimpressed and frustrated. I brought one bin of clothes and some glasses. Nice, new clothes, old clothes in good condition, glasses in great condition. And yet they told me that they won't buy any of it. "Overstocked" in majority of the types of clothes I brought in. And that many items were worn in too much for their preference. This is my first experience with platos. I would not waste your time. I brought a full tote of gently used clothes. Some of them with the tag still on from express. After an hour and five minutes of waiting they didn't accept any of my items. The lady stated they were overstocked with men's polos and button downs. Wish I would have been told this prior to waiting around. While I was waiting I scanned through the clothing, I was not impressed with the selection. I'm on my way to goodwill now to drop off my clothing, I should have just went to goodwill and saved my time. read more

Having worked in customer service for 25 years, I was extremely unimpressed with the treatment I received today. While checking out, I was told I was not eligible for the "20% off everything in the store all day today" discount given to the customer at the next register. When I asked nicely to be treated the same way, I was rudely told that I'd already paid. They couldn't offer me a coupon for future discounts, or an in-store gift certificate, they had no authorization to void my purchase and run it correctly, and they refused to call a manager for help. I'm a dedicated thrifter, and a supporter of small businesses everywhere, but this was not the sort of treatment that makes me eager to return. read more

I figure since I referenced Plato's in my Hut No. 8 review, I should weigh in on Plato's for comparison. I've been going to Plato's stores across the country for over ten years, mostly for selling. It's how I get money to buy new stuff on my limited budget. I was very happy when they came to Anchorage. First thing you'll notice when walking in is that this place is crammed with stuff. Every nook has clothing displayed in it. It's a bit overwhelming for my shopping style. I mean, I like to browse, but I'm not much of a committed digger. So, that's a bit of a downside for me and one of the reasons I prefer the Hut. Also, as other reviewers note, their clothes are inexpensive, way more so than you'll find at local consignment places, which is great for basics, of which they have a ton (ranging from tees to leggings to jeans to shoes). Old Navy and Gap are common brands. There's some outside gear, too, especially exercise wear, which can be so expensive when new. They have young trendy stuff, à la Wet Seal, American Eagle, etc. But as far as looking for unique but nicer clothes, like middle-road B.P. or Banana Republic, or higher-end designer type stuff, you're generally better off with consignment. Not always, but usually. Their jeans sometimes include some higher-ends brands: I've seen very affordable Seven for All Mankind there, though they were elf-sized. Once, I found a great Calvin Klein dress at a Plato's, but not in AK. The main point is you never know, so why not try? With all they offer in inventory, I still almost never buy here because I find so little for all the browsing. I like selling there, but I agree that they can be inconsistent on buying (they've bought things from me that they once rejected, and their pricing is impossible to decipher). Try consigning first, and you'll make more. Then, take the rest to resale. I'll keep Plato's on my rotation, especially until the Hut builds inventory, and it's worth checking out on your resale shopping journeys. read more

Came here a few months back to get a dress and shoes for a party. The store itself wasn't clean, and did NOT smell good. There was actual garbage among the clothes. The clothes themselves were disorganized and not all of them were even clean or in good condition. The service was bad.None of the three girls working there ever acknowledged I was there until they wanted my money at checkout. Whenever I gain/lose weight I come here to sell nice clothes I bought elsewhere. Hate going though because it kinda smells bad in there and they never want any of my brand name stuff. Have they never heard of BCBG? Rachel Zoe? Any Nordstrom clothing? Because that's where I buy from and they never take any of it. It's not like there's holes or wear and tear, they rejected a $250 beaded top (I bought on clearance) that other people were eyeing while it was on the counter. I almost sold it to them but didn't want to get kicked out of the store. Dresses I've brought in are nice cocktail dresses $200-300 (again, clearance at Nordstrom) clothing they said no one would want to buy. ??????? It's not like I'd be asking for a lot of money for it, I just am trying to get extra money to shop elsewhere. The only reason I try to sell here is because it's safer than Craigslist. I would never buy clothes here because of the smell, I might not be able to wash it out. If you have kids clothes to sell go check out Once Upon A Child, they took pretty much everything my son used to wear and I got $19 for half a small trash bag of clothes last time which isn't a lot but it filled up my tank. read more

Terrible store. It's dirty the workers are usually gossiping and lazy. They buy cloths for ridiculously low prices and sell them for really high prices for what they are. You'll get more out of donating them to Salvation Army, getting a tax write off and helping people in need. Or might as well just go buy the clothes brand new. read more

Most stores are cooperative. This is by far the worst platos closet I've ever been to. You can't return a single item, by return meaning get your money back. Shoes are non refundable, and items only exchangeable for store credit. What a rip off! The clothing and shoes are way overpriced. I'm so upset I ever walked in this store. I have never posted a negative review in my life but the owner is far less than hospitable. I recommend shopping somewhere else! Like other reviews, better off buying NEW items! Well I went and sold clothes to them I have to say I was impressed store was clean and gave me reasonable amount for my clothes not bad Plato's not bad. But I do have to say their excuse of not taking the other items it's kind of bogus. I had two pairs of miss me jeans and one of them had bleach spots all over them and they took those but they didn't take the hydraulic pair that was brand new. But that's ok all of it's being donated anyways!!! read more

Platos closet only takes clothes from those they want to take clothes from. It's all based on preference on personal style, whoever is gathering your information at the cashiers. I say this only because I walked in with at least 8-10 pairs of Rock Revival designer jeans and some I have only worn once or twice. But when I came back to pick up my clothes, they didn't take anything. Their reasoning(s) was 1.) they were wear and tear, (which was probably true for 2 of my fav jeans) BUT 2.) because they weren't looking for boot cut jeans which I think is ridiculous. They were perfectly clean, in style, and not worn out. I really believe, they choose clothes based off their personal preference and encounter with the customer, other than that they don't care. read more

Right next to Brown Jug Liquor, it's a bink and you miss it store, much like any store in Anchorage is. I was hopeful first going in, but there's no "career" quality clothing. It pretty much would be a mecca for any 19 year old looking to create style on a cheap budget. They have purses, shoes, pretty good casual jeans section, dresses, jewelry (though the jewelry looks pretty plastic); but there are some decent pieces, you just need to rummage through a lot. read more

I hope the people here in Anchorage make the money that is required to afford to go to this secondhand store. This is a true example of people taking advantage of other people. I have been to Plato's Closet several times. I know that this is no high fashion place however they do sell clothes and should at least look the part. I can't believe that there is actually an elderly woman, Mary I believe is her name, who works there who has this half pink hair and looks like she is wearing layers of jackets, wearing one, one tied around her waste and she doesn't ever match. I'm not saying she is too old to work there but at least dress with some respectability. And the same woman has walked up to me or shouted out to me asking if I needed help. I don't mind asking but once I say no thank you, kindly let me shop. I'm not there to chat or gossip or tell you about my day or my life or to hear about yours. She will bring up her life, her children, her health, her past, and excise me, I am now feeling completely awkward. Talk about Chatty Cathy! And if I do have a question she doesn't even have an answer. She always has to ask someone else. I don't like to go in there too often because now that she knows me I feel like her psychiatrist. The girl behind the counter who is usually doing the clothing buying seems to always have work to do but does greet me. I believe she is a manager because the other woman goes to her for questions. I know she has been there a long time and is always very professional. There is also a new girl there with dark hair whom I've never seen before who is really nice. The crew changes a lot so who knows what's going on. But seriously, whoever is in charge, get that elderly lady Mary some help, maybe she won't need me anymore and I can finally shop in peace. On another note, the place is kind of hard to shop because everything is really packed in. You take one thing out to look and you pull five things out. It gets really frustrating. I brought in some shoes that I never wore. They offered me $4 for one pair and said they didn't want any of the others, they said nobody would buy them. $4 for name brand shoes that were originally $80 and still brand new in box. They had the same pair in another color in pretty beat up condition for $40 on the floor. But my new pair was only worth me getting $4? I declined and they gave me back only the one pair they wanted to buy and not any others I brought in; they set those in their pile of things they just got in and were being prepared to go on the floor! I told them they never gave me back my other shoes and they went "oh, sorry about that. We could just throw those out for you since you don't want them." I declined and they pulled them from the pile and gave them back. The whole place was a mess, way too much was packed in, even the back of the desk was so piled with their items and items people wanted to sell that it all meshed into one giant pile! This is not your normal Plato's closet. Store is full of tattered clothes that are over priced. I stopped in to see if o could find a few gems and perhaps get rid of a few things I no longer wear. Maybe it's because it's Alaska and verity in clothes is difficult but most of the stuff looked the same or stuff everyone already is wearing. Gave it two stars because it may be suitable for someone trying to make ends meet but for thrift store enthusiast this is a far cry from other Plato s Closets in the lower 48.
