Located in one of the plazas on the Silas Dean it is a place to wait as you try to sell your clothing. I went in one day just to sell a pair of shoes that didn't fit anymore and of course they have to stick to their line which I understand I guess. You'll always find more women's clothes and accessories than men's clothes but have been lucky enough to walk out with a pair of pants in a color that I don't have. Just come in and shop on your own as they seem to always be busy and can't really help you. I was informed that sometimes they have deals and sales and was suggested when buying some pants that I should come by in the next day to get a discount on a stuff a bag deal but sadly couldn't fit it into my schedule. I'm not sure if you can get more money at other consignment shops but I'm always willing to see if I can get some money for my clothing before donating the rest and with the location in the plaza you can walk to Friendly's or Bed, Bath and Beyond to kill time and then head down to the froyo or Panera in the same plaza to spend your few dollars that you got for your clothes. If you are in the area and looking to get some brands for cheap make sure you check out the item and see if there is a wear and tear as it is surprising they won't take your stuff that has that but they will sometimes sell that to you hmm... read more

genuinely a horrible experience, first we went there and they could even take all of our bags, so we went back and now they are saying the bag we brought the clothes in isn't "expectable" because the clothes HAD to be in a container. we were told two different things and the workers were rude and unpleasant. this coming from a teenager really says something, i'm not one to complain, in fact this is the first time i've left a review on something and let me telll you my experience absoluty sucked. I dropped off 2 nicely folded bags (2 bag limit I was told..??) containing name brands like Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, and Nike to name a few and many still with tags on it. Was told a 20 minute sort through wait time. Went to my car to wait and not even 2 minutes later I'm sent a text to come back in to get my clothes. THEY DIDNT TAKE A SINGLE THING!!! I did cut out the year the clothes were made so I know they weren't too old year wise. The girl behind the counter said the clothes needed to be "freshly laundered". 75% STILL HAD TAGS ON THEM AND I WASHED THEM ALL LITERALLY THE DAY BEFORE. Worst part was when I got my bags back, only the top 3 things looked like they actually were touched. Everything was still folded and tucked tightly into the bag I had originally placed prior to bringing them to attempt to sell. All the staff looked under 18 and the store is tiny. I think my frustration with this place is people purposely bring my clothes here to get rid of them. Big baskets of clothes that I obviously don't want and am trying to get rid of while still making at least a small fraction of my money back. I don't expect this to be treated as a "return" and get what I'd originally paid for, but something would be nice considering all my clothes are from nice name brands. I walk in with a big basket of clothes, and not five minute after I leave I get a text saying my items have been sorted. I come back and from the looks of it, they had taken two or three things. One being a White Fox shirt, NEW WITH TAGS, and a nice pair of pacsun jeans. They offer me $6. I understand that they are selective but that's almost insulting. I feel second hand embarrassment for the workers that they have to riddle off ridiculous numbers like that, especially to people who are more confrontational than I. Worst Plato's in CT possibly the USA. Something always goes wrong here. Don't waste your time especially to sell. I guess you can't expect good customer service from a group of kids. I had a big bin to carry in and I asked to check in before I brought the bin because I knew it would be a hassle to carry my purse, wallet, and bins. They said no and when I got my bin someone with another bag rushed in front of me. Instead of taking my ID because I was there first. The staff member continued to check in the other person and said nothing about their bag. When I've been denied several times at this location because no bags allowed. I've been to all the Plato's in CT and NY. This is the worst one. No consistency, no management, long lines because staff doesn't know what their doing. read more

My complaint isn't necessarily about compensation as for what I donated, they gave me pretty good money. For 2 pairs of nike sneakers, 1 pair of reebok shorts, and 1 pair of american eagle jeans, I got $40. This is more than what I expected for 4 items, and I was happy with it. However, i had more issues with what they didn't accept. Out of around 45 items, they only took those 4. I understand they can't take everything, but I donated barely worn Nautica polo shirts, Nike/Polo/American Eagle T-shirts, and numerous pairs of Dockers and other brand chinos. I went through my clothes and only brought brands they mentioned on their website, or brands I had previously seen in-store (such as Old Navy). While browsing the racks, I noticed many styles that were at least 2013 or older, clothing with pills, rips, and stains, and clothing from brands that seemed out of place, including Shein and Kohls brand clothing. It is confusing to me why clothing that seems to fit their "brand" of what is appealing to younger people is rejected, but the stuff on the racks is old, undesirable, and in poor condition. There is unfortunately a lack of options for selling young mens clothing, so I wish Platos Closet had taken more of a look at my items. I got the impression that they had just taken some stuff from the top of my basket, as many items were not even unfolded. However, the items they did look at were messily thrown back in. Because they require clothes to be neatly folded and freshly laundered, it is somewhat upsetting that my clothes were returned without the level of care that I brought them in with. TL;DR: If you want to make a little money, seemingly 15% of the original sale price, take in relatively new shoes and accessories, but don't count on getting rid of much clothing, or getting anything new read more

Based on trends, I'm guessing this spot is more of a hit with the late teen & early 20s crowd. Trying to trade in clothes here is an absolute joke unless you're trying to rid yourself of the height of Forever 21 fashion for a few bucks. I prefer actual consignment shops, especially places like Uptown Consignment, which value high-quality designers instead of passing trends. As for the few times I HAVE sold clothes here, I was asked to return hours later while the salesgirls sifted through the items, even when they weren't busy in the store or handling other customer trade-ins. It really shouldn't take 3 hours to go through a bag of clothes or two. In terms of selection, as with any second hand store, it's hit or miss. While I've found a gem or two, I've mostly left empty handed. read more

First, Plato's Closet needs to expand the brands they take in. A large amount of their clothing is Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Gilly Hicks etc. The only customers they will be attracting are prepubescent teens who still think these clothing brands are fashionable. I know this store is based on what people bring to them but I have a few friends that have brought in name brands like J. Crew, Madewell, and Free People that were in awesome condition but were rejected. More mature attire please. Second, the staff isn't friendly and are of no help. The few times I've been here I can hear their conversations in the changing rooms. They talk nonstop and they talk extremely loud. I don't give a crap about what you ate for lunch or that some girl went behind your back, and I'm sure other customers don't either. Also, when rummaging through their racks I found a few articles of clothing that still had the original tags on along with the Plato's Closet tag. A few of them were being sold for a few dollars more than the original company. One plain long sleeve orange top was sold at Forever 21 for $7, but was being sold at Plato's for $10; what a rip off! If you're looking for other consignment shops, there's a few in Rocky Hill (like Uptown Consignment) that have awesome sales from time to time and better selection. I like Goodwill and Savers on the Berlin Turnpike for thrift shops. Savers is my favorite recycled clothing shop of all time! Of course, it always depends on what you're looking for but I always find the best things there. read more

I love this store! But!! I found the prices on some garments extremely overpriced ! For instance I bought a forever 21 tank top with the orginal tags of $5.50 -platos tags read $6.00!! Mind you this was part of their $20.00 grab bag event. I also found this event fasely promised with extreme small amounts of merchandise and very disorganized !! For the amount of trends that are not selling I would think more would be available for this grab bag event! Almost everyone that works here is really nice. I drop off a small bag or two every few months and they almost always take everything back. But then again, I only bring items that I think I would purchase from there and don't waste their time by bringing old and really worn clothes. A decent place to look if you insist on wearing Abrocrombie and Fitch second-hand. First off, the staff is ridiculous. I think some of these girls think they are working at a New York City boutique instead of on the Silas Deane Highway. They are rude and pretentious, and I have been offended by them when taking clothes in there. The selection is what you would expect. Used, expensive clothing. I go through the racks and often find that Marshalls or T.J. Maxx would have something similar and brand new for another three dollars. Ok - for a person who has now been to more than a dozen locations - I must say that for the guys - the section is pretty darn good. I walked out with a couple long sleeve shirts, a couple short sleeve shirts, more than a few t-shirts and a reversible hoodie - total cost didn't even come close to the cost of the hoodie and trust me - the hoodie was like brand new and would have cost about $250.00 at Buckle. I wasn't in there shopping for women's clothing obviously, but I couldn't help noticing the huge selection. If the buyers are as good for women as they are for men - I cannot help to believe that there is a great selection for young women as well. There is plenty of parking, the place is clean and the staff were all pleasant and friendly. Though I will give one way to improve - I'm not removing a star for it as it's one of the best locations I've been to! "Consignment Shop" is perhaps not the best term. It's nicer than going to say, Savers, but it's not exactly Bergdorf Goodman either. It's a store for used clothing, most of which is in very good condition, at highly reasonable prices. WHO WANTS PANTS?! It was nothing more than luck, but I did find two identical pairs of Dockers in different colors that fit better than anything I've bought in the past five years. They weren't shiny new, but they were in more than acceptable condition, and at $12 each, that sure beats going to Bob's Stores for $35 a pop. The men's section was well organized by size and/or waist. The help consisted of aloof teenagers who don't know what hard work is, nor the value of a dollar. But I guess you'd have to expect that at a place this. Word on the street is that they don't pay much for your old clothes. But you know what they say... things are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. read more

I have been to many Plato's Closets, but this one is by far one of the most disappointing ones. As a recent college grad, I try to save money and declutter simultaneously. I brought in my barely used, high quality clothing to the store, expecting maybe 20$ back. They tend to low-ball you when you bring lots of items in, but I expect that as they make a profit this way. The lady at the register asked me if I had already sold items at this store, which I had, and she proceeded to search my name. My name has an apostrophe, so sometimes it is omitted or entered and I noticed it was entered as she searched my name. The dialog box showed up and she changed the name to omit the apostrophe and my name no longer appeared in the auto fill search engine. I tried to politely say that she would need to try with and without the apostrophe to get the account, but she didn't even bother. She just made a new account. This was a small mistake but it proves just how sloppy the staff at this store are. Next, she told me to browse the store and that they would contact me in 45 minutes. I walked around and looked at items while keeping an eye on my bags and I watched as they placed it on the shelf. An hour goes by, and my items were still on the shelf. I figured maybe they were busy. Thirty more minutes go by and both bags are still on the shelf. I had not received any phone call or text. I decide to go up to the register and the same lady seems not able to remember me or my bags (which are very easy to spot as no one had bags anywhere near like mine). She asked if I was picking up and I said yes, assuming that maybe some items were not acceptable for the store. She then tore off the tag from one of the bags and claimed that the items were too mature, and that the Michael Kors coats had stains on them. I had worn it once, and there were absolutely no stains. I looked at my bags and it appeared that the employees didn't even take the items out. This store has had serious problems with management, and it shows. I am never stepping foot in this Plato's Closet again until it says "new management" out front. read more

I have a lot of pros and cons with this place. I have shopped here and sold as well and each experience is mixed. First shopping. I usually come out with a few items. I have gotten most of my American Eagle jeans here for more than half off and they were in great condition. About $12-$15 I believe? Way better than $40+!! I've gotten a Michael Kors wallet here as well for cheap as well. Uggs for about $30 and in very decent condition. This is my favorite place to shop because I have a bad habit and my income does not support the habit at all. With that being said, I buy A LOT of clothes that I never end up wearing. I also have a lot of clothes that are too big for me now. I bring small amounts of what I can in when I have the time. Most of these clothes I have bought in the past year, from platos, and only wore a few times. There's a lot of things I've brought in that are still in style. Every time I come in, I hear "stains, out of date, not a popular label" and it makes no sense to me. There are many times I come in and they will only take one or two things, and pass on the rest. And I don't even get good money for them!! It's ridiculous. They have a system where they send you a text to let you know your items have been processed. Sometimes, I never get a text, which happened the last time. There are also time where they say a wait time and it ends up being ridiculously shorter than what it should have been. There was one time they told me 2 hour wait and I said oh okay I'll go home and get some things done and come back. I didn't want to sit around for 2 hours when I had things to do. I have a 20 minute drive to and from. I got half way home and got a text THAT MY ITEMS WERE PROCESSED. They didn't even take anything! I have a feeling they just started to randomly pick things and send a text that items were ready. Such a waste of time and gas! The staff is iffy. Sometimes they are nice, and they have made me super uncomfortable. I've heard them talk about customers and way too much about personal issues. I've gotten dirty looks. Overall, I'm done selling but I'll be back to shop. read more

Review For Men's: A lot of items, but all bland low/midrange mall fashion / big box store stuff at high prices. Avoid if your looking for interesting vintage or well tailored old stock items. Store specified that they look to buy clothes from the past 3 years for stock. Impressive selection of shoes, but $50 for well worn nikes seemed to be the rule. Shoe selection is primarily athletic when I was there. Go buy the same stuff at savers for 1/5th the price and maybe you'll actually find something special. Also scope the marshalls across the street. Seem to have a uniquely good influx of designer labels and denim. read more

I drive 20 mins just to get here with a bin full of clothes and they only two 3 things and said it's due to "stains and style". Yet when I check out their clothing selection, they have some clothes that you can clearly tell they are out of style and in bad shape! After reading the reviews I was a little nervous about shopping here. We went to the Wethersfield location on a Friday during the 5 for $25 dress sale. When my daughter and I walked in we noticed that the newly renovated store was organized and clean. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff. When it was time to try on, the woman manning the dressing rooms was very friendly and accommodating. I even saw her search for a random shoe for a shopper and she was happy to do it. The cashier was also friendly and complimentary of my daughter's choice of sunglasses. I have to say, I was really impressed and would definitely go back. read more

The people who work here are rude and condescending, and spend the entire time gossiping. It does not matter what brand or quality you bring in, they won't take it, or they'll give you a low price for it. i go to thrift stores a lot and obviously they're "hit or miss". this was my first time at a plato's closet, and i loved it so much! they had very popular brands, urban outfitters, forever 21, pretty little thing, along with a HUGE PINK/VS selection. they carried men's and women's clothes but the men's section was very small, the children's section wasn't that big either but the women's section was amazing. i highly recommend plato's closet, you won't be disappointed read more

This is not the first Plato's I've visited, however, it's definitely the worst! My biggest complaint is that most of the racks were so crammed full it was impossible to look through the clothing. Also this store is terribly organized. Be sure to check the size on the tag before you bother taking it off the rack because they just stuff things wherever they feel like it. The staff was not friendly in the least bit, the whole time I was there they were just huddled behind the counter gossiping loud enough for the whole store to hear. I got an attitude like I was interrupting them when I asked for a changing room. I do love Plato's, but this store is a pure waste of time. A bunch of full bags, the stop and shop reusable ones... And they took probably 4 items and I got 12$ worth. They rip you off and don't give you anything for it. Not very friendly staff.. For starters, I brought a brand new VS bag filled with new or like new clothing and accessories. They took maybe a tenth of what I brought and told me the rest was too worn or had stains. Okay, if you say so. I went shopping yesterday which was a Saturday. I wanted a pair of boots and the selection was great, I will say that. I didn't like that the employees were discussing how irritated they were because there were so many customers shopping in the store. NO CUSTOMERS=NO JOB. I couldn't browse the racks because they were too full of clothing, and a lot of the clothing I was able to find had stains. They also don't take fun stuff like nail polish or that many accessories and I know other stores do. My biggest issue, however, is there wasn't really anything original.
