The food is good. The place is clean. The service is just fine. I'd give it five stars instead of four but there are a TON of great Mexican restaurants in the area that are much better, across the board. If you're staying at the hotel nearby or maybe getting your vehicle serviced next door, sure... go grab a meal. You're not going to have a bad time. I CAN ONLY ENDORSE the Street Taco Carnitas combination plate! I have been here 20+ times in 3+ years, this is the only dish I get - EVER! If you try something else and aren't happy - I am not responsible. All beer glasses are frozen, a nice touch - Dos Equis Amber on tap - always with a lime. Horrible service. Had immediate service when we walked in and were seated and then it went downhill after that. Was not busy so no excuse for our order not to be taken with 20 minutes of being seated. We were never checked after we got our food and had to get up and request someone come refill our drinks or give us our check. 06/2022 So, I gave Plaza Tolteca another shot tonight, the service was terrible even though there was hardly anyone in the restaurant and they screwed up my order again! How do you get "Huevos Rancheros" when I asked for the "Enchiladas Rancheras"? This was at 530 pm I had just ordered a beer, which I asked for a pint (standard beer glass) and was given the 22-ounce big gulp. The order came out and the wait staff who took the order never stopped by to check on me or the meal and being hungry I ate it; the eggs had an "off" taste, could be local farmer. Finally, another staff member came over and out of frustration I just asked for "the bill", which resulted in a questioning stare to which I explained that I wanted to leave and pay the bill. So for the record they have screwed up 3 out of the last 7 meal orders, this is at the restaurant not take out or delivery. 04/2022 So disappointed, ate in tonight and the table was sticky / uncleaned so I moved myself. Wait staff did not attempt to clean, even though it was very obvious that the table had not been cleaned. Chips were stale salsas were ok. FYI Med beer = 22 oz @ $6.29 so that's a 20 dollar six pack... Street tacos were just gross under cooked meat / fatty pieces, I hope the dark specs in the refried beans were spices, didn't see them until too late.... I would not recommend this place they have reverted to a 1 star restaurant with lack-luster service. read more

To sum things up: tried a variety of dishes and meats, everything was very low quality, and not cooked very well (steak was chewy and hard or very fatty, shrimp was watery, chicken also chewy and hard) I felt that I could eat better just going to Walmart which is never a good sign, service was pretty below average (took between 12-16 minutes for first drink order), the place was empty so im not sure what the excuse would be. In general I'm just pretty disappointed. Not like I'm going to be sick. Maybe in the future we will give it another try but this was a rough first impression. read more

This is an extremely weak version of an Americanized Mexican place. Definitely not worth going back to and the service at the vastly wide open bar on a Friday night was bad at best. It would make sense a place like this would exist on this chain food nation of a city, but the execution should be attainable given there's literally no difference between this and any other Americanized Mexican place across America - except quality. read more

Let's start this out on the positive side...we order pick up and it (the food) is good and has always been well proportioned and they have great menudo. That is where the positive ends... Today, a Sunday, my wife and I decided to go sit and eat. We were the first ones thru the door, it's Sunday, we figured it would be busy as soon as church let out. 11:00 am we are seated; 11:04 another table is seated behind us; 11:05 the young man with chips and salsa comes from the kitchen, passes us and serves the table behind us, no biggie, the waiter is right behind him, but he passes our table and goes directly to the other and takes their drink orders...and leaves, once again without even acknowledging my wife and I were in his restaurant. All the while and second server is sitting at the bar also not acknowledging us; 11:09 am the waiter brings the other tables drinks, never looking our way, and yet a third waitress enters the picture...looks our way and then proceeds to enter the kitchen. The waiter at the table behind us finishes taking the other tables order, which is still the only other table in the restaurant, and once again passes us by. 11:14 am we get up, head to the door, passing the person who seated us without him asking if there was an issue or if he could help. Other than being seated, we were never spoken to or acknowledged! Needless to say, I can't rate the food since we had no service and having no service there is only one STAR since zero stars is not an option... We will not be back, there are too many establishments in the area that are more than happy to serve my family and I and have never been afraid to take payment for their services... read more

The maggot flavored lettuce was rotting and tasted so repulsive that I get nauseous just thinking about it. It took me a while to figure out what the strange flavor in my taco was, by the time I figured it out, we had eaten most of the lettuce. The vegetables with the fried meat also tasted like they were slimy and rotten before they were cooked. I was on a date so I didn't want to complain too much. I politely informed the waiter that the food tasted rotten and I could not continue eating it. She went and informed someone in the back and then said nothing more to me. I just paid my bill and quietly left. I will never return to this restaurant. Yuck! I'm not a picky eater at all, I'm an extremely easy customer. I only draw the line with maggots. If the food has a distinctive maggot taste, I will not eat it. I've never tasted maggots prior to this experience, but I'm sure they must taste similar to the flavors I was exposed to... It was so disgusting, words can not describe the regret I feel about having eaten at this restaurant. And to make matters worse, I took my date, how embarrassing for me! I would like to offer 2.5 stars overall. Ambiance: it's a nice looking place inside and out Service: mediocre, there was no hot sauce on the table so I had to ask. Hit sauce is a staple of the table in Mexican restaurants... come on. Food: had the #8 lunch, chicken enchilada and 2 beef tacos. Got the tacos with soft shell because I don't like the hard shell. The taco was pretty much a oily mush of salt that lacked much flavour. I added a bunch of green hot sauce and turned it into a pepper taco. That made it palatable. The chicken enchilada was bland. It was extremely lightly seasoned chicken with salty cheese. So sad was this experience. It was a food catastrophe. read more

I go here like 3 times a week now. It's the best I can get since living in the area after leaving Southern California.

UPDATE: I have since been here two more times. The first revisit I got the carnitas, which was surprisingly tender. They forgot the tortillas that it is supposed to come with but I eventually got them. The second revisit, I got some of the street tacos which is what really separates this restaurant from all the other mexican restaurants in the area. It just tasted so fresh...and they pile stuff high on those little tortillas that it makes it slightly difficult to eat without dropping half of it on your plate...but I've never known a taco that wasn't in some way messy. I now like this place...except the parking situation is terrible. Try to carpool there. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I went in here with 2 friends for dinner. My first impression upon walking in was "this place looks very nice". I was given a buzzer and told it was a 15 minute wait. We decided to just step outside and have a cigarette and wait for the buzzer. Come 30 minutes later we are wondering what is up with this buzzer and go in. We notice upon going back in that none of the people we saw walk in are waiting...they are already seated. I go up to the counter and explain that we've been waiting with this buzzer for 30 minutes and the woman's reply was "Oh, the buzzers don't work". We then stared at each other blankly for a few seconds and I inquire, "well are there any open tables?" I can see several open tables from my vantage point, yet her reply is "we don't have any". We proceed waiting yet another 15 minutes to be seated. The chips and salsa were as you'd expect at any Mexican place in Southern Maryland or elsewhere. They were out of large beer mugs, but I can't exactly fault them for that. Now...as for the food. I ordered the Burrito Jalisco...This burrito is stuffed with rice, beans, chicken, and chorizo and then topped with cheese and pico de gallo. If anyone is acquainted with the Burrito San Jose from Monterey...it is exactly the same thing. I figured I would order their equivalent so I could compare apples to apples. In all honesty, the Burrito Jalisco was probably not as good as it's Monterey equivalent. I was really cheated with the pico de gallo as I could only surmise that there was less than a tablespoon of pico de gallo, which is practically nothing. My friends had similar comments about the restaurant...commenting of it not being much different than other offerings in the area. Despite this, I will go again after the place gets more settled, as this was the first or second weekend they were open. But as for now, I did not have the best experience the first go round. read more

The prices are a little high for the portions, which is again difficult when there are so many Mexican choices in the immediate area and throughout the county. I haven't had anything I didn't like at this place. My wife, our 9 year old daughter, two year old son and I decided to have dinner here. My wife is from San Luis Potosi S.L.P, Mexico and we are a Spanish speaking bilingual career military family. The waiter was Awesome and as we have learned that it is very difficult to find authentic Mexican food we had eaten here previously the food was what it was in not being top rated but middle of the row. Well, like many other's out there our two year old little man can be a handful God bless him.lol our son had ran over to the bar area and my wife was picking him up to bring him back to the table. As my wife picked our son up a lady yelled at my wife telling her to keep our son away from the bar area. I did inform my wife that we needed to keep our son away from the bar as it is the law and the establishment could get into trouble as a result of such. While the lady later identified as the manager was right to inform my wife of such the way she went about it was totally inappropriate. So, I approached her and reminded her that my wife, our children, and I were customer's and not her employee's. I eleborated that her employee's may tolerate her talking down to them like her maid's or indentured servants if you will but that we would not tolerate such treatment. I suggested that she should have approached my wife and politely explained the situation to my wife and not made a scene in front of everyone in the establushment. The manager looked up at me, clenched her teeth, and called me a stupid white boy in Spanish with some other racially charged words on top of this. The manager and several of the staff seemed to have difficulty with speaking English and the manager was extremely upset when she discovered I spoke Spanish way better then she could speak English! There was a man at the bar who was drunk that was trying to escalate the situation by suggesting they call local law enforcement. I told t he man in Spanish to mind his own business. There was a gentleman who I inquired as to whether he was the owner or not. He informed me that he was not the owner and was speaking with my wife as we were finishing our mesl. He assured my wife in Spanish that he would correct his manager as she had t hi s problem previously giving away the fact that he was the owner and that his manager was a problem. Next thing I know a Deputy Sherif walks in and asks us to come outside. So f as family and all we went outside and in spite of my family and I having been victimized issued me a no tresspass having three other duties and one Trooper present like I had comitted some sort of crime for speaking up after being mistreated at this establishment. The only time I have better Mexican food was 1.) in Mexico, 2.) at "Tacos Yaqui" in San Ysidro, CA. Chips were warm, salsa was offered in a 3-bowl deep refill bottle, white Mayo sauce too. The salsa is fine in texture, I like more of a Pico de Gallo style salsa. No heartache there, was mild in spice. Kids portion was a bit small, but are limited to 10 yr old and under on menu - chicken fingers were oily and salty-but he's a picky eater, anyway. We highly recommend the Carne Asada Street Tacos. I tried to get my wife to get the Pollo Street Tacos (to swap 2+2 carne/pollo), but NO DICE!-she wanted Carne Asada too! I enjoyed the rice, and ate the beans with what spilled off of my tacos along with the provided Guacamole, Jalepeno sauce and fresh squeezed my own lime before I tried it - YUM. Had to ask the waitress for a refill on chips and soda-but a party of 10 had just invaded her section - she was a tad busy. Overall - great food, great decore, good ambiance music (not too loud like other places I have been), "new" waitresses and waiters, and the prices we VERY reasonable. Parking is tricky, we went just before dinner rush and scored easy parking. THANK YOU FOR GIVING US A BETTER CHOICE OF LOCAL MEXICAN FOOD! Wonderful, authentic Mexican food finds a home in Southern Maryland. I always order their carne asada street taco plate. Reminds me of the street tacos I used to get at backyard fiestas in Southern California. If you like really spicy salsa, you can request a bowl of their hot stuff. Rich, hot dried chile flavor. I am in love with this place. Our server was great about getting us refills of water and chips while we waited. I am a huge fan. If you go on Cinco de Mayo, they get slammed with business, so there is a longer wait than usual for seating. read more

Decent restaurant for lunch while visiting a relative at college in the area. Came in around 2 pm, so it wasn't crowded at all. We were taken to a booth and seated immediately after arriving. The seat of the booth was cracked and fairly uncomfortable. We were immediately brought chips and salsa. Salsa was good and had a spicy bite to it. We ordered shortly after the waitress brought us menus. I decided on a combination steak, chicken and shrimp fajitas ordered without sour cream. This place got it right and brought it without sour cream, so I didn't have to send it back. Service was quick and within 15 minutes we had our food. Chicken and Shrimp were delicious to go with the peppers and onions sizzlling fajitas. The steak was no good. It almost seemed processed. It certainly wasn't a choice quality of meat. The pieces were shriveled and didn't taste great. The beans and rice were okay. Beans are beans, but the rice didn't taste good at all. No flavor, just bland tasting rice. Ended up taking more than half home and ate for dinner later in the evening. All in all, it was a decent place to eat quickly. Wasn't terribly expensive and at least our waitress spoke Spanish and seemed authentic for the type of restaurant. Probably would choose a different restaurant the next I visit the area. read more

I couldn't believe that the portion for the guacamole was just as small as the side sauces that they give you.
