    Flights (cider tasting)
    Amy K.

Not what I expected, but it was a good experience. A cider & whiskey "pub" is the best way to describe this place. Extremely unassuming... aloof, if you will. We didn't realize that when we walked in - was hardly greeted, found a seat at an empty table, and just sat. After a bit, I walked up to the counter and inquired about how their cider tasting works. The gentleman was kind and explained to pick 4 ciders from the menu, and to let him know when I'd decided (he had a paper for me to write it on). I saw a menu sitting on another table, so I took that and sat back down. What do ya know, at the very top of the menu it explains exactly that! "Flights by the 4 ounce pour" and "Pub service. Come see us when you're ready." THEN it all made sense! My friend and I placed our orders for flights of 4 ciders. The gentleman prepared them, and then called me over to get them from the counter. He was kind, and explained the order of the ciders. We sat at our table, and casually enjoyed our tasting. If/when we asked, the gentleman explained the differences between the ciders. But overall, it was a very hands-off experience... which was fine, because we were there for the cider but also to sit a while and relax. Some others were standing at the counter, drinking at the bar and chatting. The ciders were fine. Granted I only tried 4 of them, but none of them did I like enough to buy some to bring home. (I'd sure like to try more, though! They had a lot of options.) The white board had a list of some pot pies(?) that we could order. Because we have food sensitivities/allergies, we didn't try any. (We went across the street for food after our tasting.) But it's nice that there is *something* someone could order to eat there. I'm a wine person (who also LOVES cider), and I had anticipated this being like a wine tasting experience but with cider. So the hands-off experience wasn't what I was expecting. But once I realized that *this is a pub*, I shifted my expectation and had a really nice time. I look forward to coming back and trying more of their ciders... and whiskeys!

I thought this place was decent! If you enjoy dry ciders with a slightly tannic aftertaste, then this is your spot.

Love the ambiance. This has true ciders, which is refreshing given the lack of that in FL. Highly recommend!

My wife had the crab cake burger and I had a burger with apple slices, I don't recall the name but it was on the Confederate side of the menu. We were both very happy with the food. It was AMAZING. We will absolutely come back before we go home. This place is going on our return list. We went back mad I had the Longstreet Burger (photo)

We'd spent an entire day touring the battlefield, it's a Saturday, and the town is full of tourists. No surprise we had a thirty minute wait for a table. But once inside and seated, it was clear to us that the B & G was no ordinary bar & grill. The burgers are themed for generals, both Federal and Confederate, who took part in the battle. Each burger is characterized by the general it's named for. The General Buford, for example, is served with bleu cheese crumbles and horseradish (he's a cavalry officer, get it?) and the Robert E. Lee features a slab of Virginia ham. I ordered the General George Meade. Meade was a Pennsylvanian, so naturally this burger comes with a pile of Philly cheesesteak. A carnivore's delight, to be sure. No complaints here. And if I'm ever back this way, I'm curious to try the General Longstreet: it's served with carmelized onions and peanut butter. That's gotta be good.

It's cool to get a cheap drink or shot, see the mine cave, listen to the music, and move on with your trip. Locals and travelers alike visit this establishment. It's not fancy and smells a bit musty but the clientele and pricing are great. I've been a patron here every time I'm in town for a few years now. It's a consistent experience every time, we are repeat customers. 21+ only NO KIDS. Pro tip: bar service & paying your check can be kinda slow because the bartenders get to talking - which is a bonus if you're on the receiving end of the talking.... but they get sidetracked often. Consider backing up your drink and paying cash up front. Anyway this is the reason it's knocked down a star, can get kinda frustrating when you just want a beer, sometimes it takes a while even if they aren't busy.

Of the two servers they had, we had the worst of the two. She disappeared from the floor for long periods so it was difficult to even get a drink refill. Ended up sticking with water as the one cocktail I had was clearly a mix and also seemed to have no alcohol in it. Appetizer selection was limited to seafood or onion soup. Don't like seafood? Tough luck. If you like seafood with some variation of Old Bay then you'll probably like this place. Although there are much cheaper places to eat if you just want basic northerner seasoning. The restaurant was not advertised as a seafood place otherwise I would have avoided it. I ended up ordering a steak, which came with a salad and a potato. The salad and potato was the best part. Despite ordering the steak medium rare, it was unevenly cooked and dry with a leathery exterior. I would have sent it back but I didn't want to spend another hour trying to get someone's attention to resolve it. If I ever find myself in Gettysburg again, I will be sure to eat elsewhere, this was not good value for money.

Because we were going out to dinner in a couple hours we just shared an appetizer and ordered flights. We ordered the large pretzel with pub cheese and it was really great. Pretzel seemed like it was made with fresh dough and it the buttery, saltiness just made it exactly what we wanted. I felt bad for the cooks and bartenders as the place was super busy, but it was a really fun vibe, and great service for how packed they were. The beers were great: I had the: -Incessant Luminescence (American Stout) -Portergeist -Sunglow - Hefeweizen -Jamba Blueberry Pumpkin Swirl sour Wifey had the: -Gettys Brau - Pilsner -Hop Hat - IPA -Dead Man Walking - Hazy IPA -My nickname in high school - Citrus IPA Ok, to be fair, the Jamba Blueberry Pumpkin Swirl sour was weird...it was more like a smoothie than a beer so the texture was odd, but the flavor was fun. I hate IPAs so I can't speak to them, but Wifey loved them. Overall- fun place, great vibe, very good beers and a great pretzel appetizer. I'd come back the next time we are out in Gettysburg.

Was I seeing this place through my own beer goggles for the night. Let's just get into it. When we showed up in the area we had asked about what nightlife was like in the area. With it being in the middle of a cold streak we were told about several places in town that would fit the bill to have a night out. We made the rounds in town and then found ourselves here for the remainder of the night. I think what drew us here was that it looked like a dive from the outside and allowed smoking. There weren't many people in here for a majority of the night, so we kind of got to observe this place with the regulars in it. That really allows to see how the locals are in an area. It was interesting to say the least. Once the drinks started flowing we started to feel a little more comfortable in here. We started talking to the bartender to find out what was good to do besides the typical tourist stuff in the area. She was wonderful with suggestions, telling us about other watering holes in the vicinity and even beyond Gettysburg. We had inquired about LGBT friendly places within a short car ride and were basically told to go to Harrisburg or a small town in Maryland. At that point, that's when things started to get a little weird. After outing ourselves, things got a little uneasy for us. We ended up meeting the owner's grandson. He was great and seconded the suggestions the bartender made. But when he introduced us to the locals at the end of the bar, we kind of wanted to not say much. It actually made us feel unwelcomed after a bit of sitting near them. Kind of like all eyes were on us. After a few more minutes of that, we paid our bill and made it out the door. So the thing is that it's a great bar, if you're a local. Or maybe even if it's crowded, so there are other people to focus on. We liked everything, the freedom to smoke, the pricing, the bartender, but the atmosphere changed at some point and flipped the script. Would we go back? Maybe if it was nicer weather wise out, that would allow more people to be in here.
