Exceedingly mediocre for the prices being charged. I suppose being in a historic structure is interesting except that when the servers tromp around the floor moves and your table shakes slightly. Of the two servers they had, we had the worst of the two. She disappeared from the floor for long periods so it was difficult to even get a drink refill. Ended up sticking with water as the one cocktail I had was clearly a mix and also seemed to have no alcohol in it. Appetizer selection was limited to seafood or onion soup. Don't like seafood? Tough luck. If you like seafood with some variation of Old Bay then you'll probably like this place. Although there are much cheaper places to eat if you just want basic northerner seasoning. The restaurant was not advertised as a seafood place otherwise I would have avoided it. I ended up ordering a steak, which came with a salad and a potato. The salad and potato was the best part. Despite ordering the steak medium rare, it was unevenly cooked and dry with a leathery exterior. I would have sent it back but I didn't want to spend another hour trying to get someone's attention to resolve it. If I ever find myself in Gettysburg again, I will be sure to eat elsewhere, this was not good value for money. read more

Wow!!! Just WOW!! We walked into the Dobbin House and were transported back to 1776. Warm and inviting ambiance. Colonial dressed servers, dinner by candlelight. Our server, Rebecca was wonderful! She gave us us all the specials and was very accommodating. Excellent service! A fresh baked bread basket with a lovely variety of homemade breads was brought to our table. Ohhh, they were fabulous. The cuisine!!! Oh my goodness! I ordered the New York Steak, medium rare with a sweet potato. How wonderful to have an option of sweet potato or white! I was thrilled to have the option of a sweet potato. New York was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Husband ordered the pork tenderloin and it was so tender and juicy! Prime rib was delivered to our friend and was over cooked. Rebecca took it back and returned within a couple of minutes with a perfectly cooked prime rib. Crab cakes were the best I've ever tasted. Felt like stepping back into the 1700's. When you first step in you can smell old mesquite wood. Several old fireplaces and candles light the tables. The food is seafare as well as lamb chops, steaks and other choices. Traditional recipes. I had the seafood Isabella which is a medley of seafood including scallops, shrimp and crab. I've been at the Dobbins House at least several times for the past decade and noticed 2 weeks ago that they were having a buffet for Mother's Day from 10AM until 3PM, so I made us reservations for 10:15. We parked about a block away intentionally since the restaurant parking lot is not huge. After checking with the greeter we were promptly seated andvgreeted by our server, Linda, who was great throughout. There was a huge assortment of foods many of which you can see in my accompanying photos. What you cannot ascertain, however, is how delicious everything was! The prime rib was outstanding as was everything else. The did serve "Mom-Osas" and other spiritus libations. The deserts were wonderful as well, albeit perhaps a bit too sweet for this prediabetic. A lovely touch was a rose for each Mom who was there! ALL servers were attentive and courteous which was nice. Overall 'twas a delightful experience! Oh, the price was $50 per person. Visited over the Valentines Day weekend as Dobbin is definitely an excellent choice for a special occasion - reservation was for 7pm in the main dining rooms & we were seated within a minute or two (I've always noticed that they seem to have an efficient/accurate system - have never had a long wait... even on the busiest days). We were greeted immediately by our server in period garb & placed our drink/app orders. Another highlight is the basket of breads, which are fantastic. We ordered the NY Strip & Primal Rib of Beef® - both as always made to perfection! We had live entertainment as a gentleman with a lute moved about the dining rooms. Timing of the food arrivals was perfect and as always, we had a relaxing & enjoyable meal. You generally go to a restaurant for the food. We had filet mignon and NY Strip steak. Both were excellent, as were the baked potatoes and the corn-crab chowder. And the bread was excellent, too--a blueberry bread, regular roll, and corn bread. Our server was great, and the atmosphere was splendid. I called to book a group of 21. Dobbin house is a great choice! I love the homemade bread basket, it's so yummy. Also the french onion soup is alwys a hit. With the 20 people that had dinner, they all enjoyed it. I think we likely had one of everything on the menu :) I end up here once a year or so. And each time the staff is attentive, on point and just gracious. They also split all the checks!! That is a huge feat, which they do with ease. Parking can be tight, so arrive early and hunt for some parking. They do have some ADA parking in front. My standalone favorite will alwys be the French onion soup. read more

They offer three dining experiences: a casual tavern (no reservations accepted), a fine dining option (reservations recommended), and a banquet room for large groups of 30+. We came as a party of 21 for the casual tavern experience, and as expected, they had to split us into three smaller tables. I had originally called to reserve fine dining tables, but some in our group didn't pack fancier clothes, so we pivoted to the tavern. The Dobbin House, built in 1776, is Gettysburg's oldest standing structure and is rich with history--it even served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The preserved architecture and period decor make dining here feel like stepping back in time. We were worried this might be a tourist trap with high prices and average food, but we were pleasantly surprised--the food was delicious. My Bleu Cheeseburger was loaded with big chunks of bleu cheese and cooked perfectly. My favorite dish, though, was the Baked Kings Onion Soup--generous amounts of melted cheese made it absolutely irresistible. Stopped by in early December for the first time in years and the only thing on my mind was the french onion soup! My mom and I made the 4 hour drive solely for this soup and it is always worth it! My dad and I ate in the more casual downstairs tavern. The food and libations were tasty, but what really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. This evening the gang dined at the historic Dobbin House Tavern. The building still retains its original 18th-century charm, featuring native stone walls, seven fireplaces, 4 stories, 8 dining rooms, and hand-carved woodwork. Many furnishings match those of that era. Built in 1776 by Reverend Alexander Dobbin, the Dobbin House Tavern is the oldest standing structure in Gettysburg, and where Rev. Dobbin raised his 19 children by two marriages. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the Dobbin House served as a makeshift field hospital for wounded soldiers, where the wounded filled the house from basement to attic. Dining tables became operating stations, bedrooms were used for surgeries, and the grounds bore the marks of intense suffering and loss. It later became a school, as well as part of the Underground Railroad with secret or hidden rooms that are still visable today. The Dobbin House Tavern is a living museum of American history, blending fine dining with stories of courage, education, and freedom. It is said that Lincoln gave his address just steps from where the tavern stands today. On top of all that history, our dinner this evening was memorable. I have been here several times over the last few years and each visit has been excellent. It's a beautiful historic building with multiple levels. It also houses a cute little store with country-type items like candles, knitwear, jewelry, ornaments and souvenirs. There are different areas that you can choose to dine in: the basement Spring House Tavern and the formal dining areas. We have enjoyed meals in every section. The only thing I would say would be for any older folks or people with decreased mobility is that you may want to avoid the upper level. The stairs are plentiful to get to the second floor and the seats were pretty low. That being said, there are sturdy railings whether you choose basement, main level or upper. The menu has something for every palate. The crabcakes are excellent with good flavor and minimal filler. The steaks are always top-notch. I'm a huuuge fan of the pecan pie and if you pair that with a hot buttered rum, it is sheer bliss. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this place, but the SH Tavern does not take reservations, so you might have a significant wait certain times. read more
