Built in 1776, it has been a family home, the first classical school west of the Susquehanna River, a stop on the Underground Railroad, and even a Civil War field hospital. Today, you can grab an incredible meal while surrounded by centuries of history. If you go, eat in the basement tavern. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. I kicked things off with the Baked King's Onion Soup, loaded with perfectly toasted cheese and a surprise twist--shredded beef that took it to another level. I followed that with the Spit Roasted Chicken Dinner, roasted the old-fashioned way over an open fire until the skin was perfectly crisp while the meat stayed juicy and tender. Because apparently I arrived with the appetite of all 19 Dobbin kids, I also ordered the Dobbin's Hot Beef Sandwich. Tender roast beef on a buttery brioche roll with rich au jus for dipping? Absolutely demolished it. Then came the roast beef club with Swiss, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, plus not one... but two sides of potato salad. Pro tip: dip the potato salad into the onion soup. You're welcome. The Dobbin House proves that great food never goes out of style. They say you can't eat history... but after this meal, I'm pretty sure I did. First off, stellar onion soup, an unremarkable salad, truly outstanding crab cakes, and a peach crisp dessert that was worthy of seconds if there was room (there was not) The service was quick, efficient, and friendly. The tavern is historic and charming, and quite close. A few caveats. There are 2 restaurants here with mostly the same menu: the tavern in the historic cellar, which does not take reservations, and the "fine dining" upstairs which absolutely requires reservations days in advance. You enter the tavern through the gift shop. Both a very busy, so expect a wait, and take note of the different serving hours between the two. The food was excellent, but not quite as hot as I would have liked. It's worth the experience if you're nearby. read more

Wow!!! Just WOW!! We walked into the Dobbin House and were transported back to 1776. Warm and inviting ambiance. Colonial dressed servers, dinner by candlelight. Our server, Rebecca was wonderful! She gave us us all the specials and was very accommodating. Excellent service! A fresh baked bread basket with a lovely variety of homemade breads was brought to our table. Ohhh, they were fabulous. The cuisine!!! Oh my goodness! I ordered the New York Steak, medium rare with a sweet potato. How wonderful to have an option of sweet potato or white! I was thrilled to have the option of a sweet potato. New York was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Husband ordered the pork tenderloin and it was so tender and juicy! Prime rib was delivered to our friend and was over cooked. Rebecca took it back and returned within a couple of minutes with a perfectly cooked prime rib. Crab cakes were the best I've ever tasted. Visited over the Valentines Day weekend as Dobbin is definitely an excellent choice for a special occasion - reservation was for 7pm in the main dining rooms & we were seated within a minute or two (I've always noticed that they seem to have an efficient/accurate system - have never had a long wait... even on the busiest days). We were greeted immediately by our server in period garb & placed our drink/app orders. Another highlight is the basket of breads, which are fantastic. We ordered the NY Strip & Primal Rib of Beef® - both as always made to perfection! We had live entertainment as a gentleman with a lute moved about the dining rooms. Timing of the food arrivals was perfect and as always, we had a relaxing & enjoyable meal. We also had time afterward to visit the gift shop, which has a nice sampling of item and souvenirs - we almost always find something to buy;) I highly recommend the Dobbin House as an upscale (but not pretentious) night out - great food, great atmosphere! read more

I've been at the Dobbins House at least several times for the past decade and noticed 2 weeks ago that they were having a buffet for Mother's Day from 10AM until 3PM, so I made us reservations for 10:15. We parked about a block away intentionally since the restaurant parking lot is not huge. After checking with the greeter we were promptly seated andvgreeted by our server, Linda, who was great throughout. There was a huge assortment of foods many of which you can see in my accompanying photos. What you cannot ascertain, however, is how delicious everything was! The prime rib was outstanding as was everything else. The did serve "Mom-Osas" and other spiritus libations. The deserts were wonderful as well, albeit perhaps a bit too sweet for this prediabetic. A lovely touch was a rose for each Mom who was there! ALL servers were attentive and courteous which was nice. Overall 'twas a delightful experience! Oh, the price was $50 per person. Felt like stepping back into the 1700's. When you first step in you can smell old mesquite wood. Several old fireplaces and candles light the tables. The food is seafare as well as lamb chops, steaks and other choices. Traditional recipes. I had the seafood Isabella which is a medley of seafood including scallops, shrimp and crab. My husband and I ate down in the tavern. It was 102° outside and going down in the tavern was very refreshing. The ambience was out of this world! I felt like I was stepping back in time. I called to book a group of 21. Dobbin house is a great choice! I love the homemade bread basket, it's so yummy. Also the french onion soup is alwys a hit. With the 20 people that had dinner, they all enjoyed it. I think we likely had one of everything on the menu :) I end up here once a year or so. And each time the staff is attentive, on point and just gracious. They also split all the checks!! That is a huge feat, which they do with ease. Parking can be tight, so arrive early and hunt for some parking. They do have some ADA parking in front. My standalone favorite will alwys be the French onion soup. read more

We had a nice family dinner at the Dobbin House Tavern - partly museum, partly restaurant. I highly recommend the King's Baked Onion Soup! They offer three dining experiences: a casual tavern (no reservations accepted), a fine dining option (reservations recommended), and a banquet room for large groups of 30+. We came as a party of 21 for the casual tavern experience, and as expected, they had to split us into three smaller tables. I had originally called to reserve fine dining tables, but some in our group didn't pack fancier clothes, so we pivoted to the tavern. The Dobbin House, built in 1776, is Gettysburg's oldest standing structure and is rich with history--it even served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The preserved architecture and period decor make dining here feel like stepping back in time. We were worried this might be a tourist trap with high prices and average food, but we were pleasantly surprised--the food was delicious. My Bleu Cheeseburger was loaded with big chunks of bleu cheese and cooked perfectly. My favorite dish, though, was the Baked Kings Onion Soup--generous amounts of melted cheese made it absolutely irresistible. I have been coming here since I was a child & I am so grateful this place hasn't changed a bit! Stopped by in early December for the first time in years and the only thing on my mind was the french onion soup! My mom and I made the 4 hour drive solely for this soup and it is always worth it! Perfectly cheesy and beefy ugh it's a meal itself! I got to have an alcoholic beverage for the first time since visiting and the bloody mary was so delicious! My mom got the Dobbin House Ale & even got some to take home! I also ordered the blue cheese burger which was unreal. Cooked perfectly medium rare with a huge slab of blue cheese! You generally go to a restaurant for the food. We had filet mignon and NY Strip steak. Both were excellent, as were the baked potatoes and the corn-crab chowder. And the bread was excellent, too--a blueberry bread, regular roll, and corn bread. Our server was great, and the atmosphere was splendid. Food is well prepared and tasty. Service is personal and professional. It's not inexpensive. I had a salad and main course with a cocktail and a glass of wine. My son had a salad and main course and a soda. The bill came to $128 + $22 tip = $140. But we return every year when visiting the area. I had not eaten at the Dobbin House Tavern in quite a while. They are very friendly and helpful but I have to say that I was dissappointed with the food. I know "everyone" raves about the Dobbin House but I expected better from such a popular place. We ordered the Onion Soup which is supposedly "AMAZING" and......it wasn't. It was mostly broth with a few chunk of beef and a few bread cubes....and a lot of slided onions topped with a big glob of cheese. Yes, it was tasty but it was a rather small portion for the price. The side salad was very nice and fresh and the blue cheese dressing is delicious! The major dissappointment was the Apple Pie. It was terrible! It may be "homemade" but I have had better apple pie from the frozen section at a grocery store. The apples chunks were tasteless and the pie crust was gummy and tasted like it was days old. I was looking forward to a delicious piece of homemade apple pie but it was not to be! Well, I wanted to like this place but I won't be going back again. Mediocre at best... read more

The food was out of this world with more than plenty to eat. Service was exceptional as waitress was attentive and forth coming with tea. The ambiance was surreal as this restaurant was used during the civil war where the restaurant is actually under ground. Exceedingly mediocre for the prices being charged. I suppose being in a historic structure is interesting except that when the servers tromp around the floor moves and your table shakes slightly. Of the two servers they had, we had the worst of the two. She disappeared from the floor for long periods so it was difficult to even get a drink refill. Ended up sticking with water as the one cocktail I had was clearly a mix and also seemed to have no alcohol in it. Appetizer selection was limited to seafood or onion soup. Don't like seafood? Tough luck. If you like seafood with some variation of Old Bay then you'll probably like this place. Although there are much cheaper places to eat if you just want basic northerner seasoning. The restaurant was not advertised as a seafood place otherwise I would have avoided it. I ended up ordering a steak, which came with a salad and a potato. The salad and potato was the best part. Despite ordering the steak medium rare, it was unevenly cooked and dry with a leathery exterior. I would have sent it back but I didn't want to spend another hour trying to get someone's attention to resolve it. If I ever find myself in Gettysburg again, I will be sure to eat elsewhere, this was not good value for money. read more
