Service is pretty quick on a Friday night and the bartenders get high marks for keeping up with the demand. I didn't know until four minutes ago and routinely raised an eyebrow whenever I heard the bar's name murmured in conversation. Turns out it was a notorious street gang from Maryland in the mid-1800s. I feel relieved it's not a term used by cyber bullies for purposes much more nefarious. Now that that quandary is solved, lets party. With exposed brick, carnival marquee letters spelling out "shuffleboard" in the back, and a minimalist look and feel, it's a sports bar for adults with refined sensibilities. The perfect space for everything from a quick drink at the bar or a group hang with friends and co-workers. One of the more notable elements are their four wine taps that are climate controlled and preserved with nitrogen to ensure quality. All too often, wine at sports/dive bars is a bad choice. You're freed from that gable here. All in all, a highly versatile establishment for many of life's reasons to toast. It's a genuine shame how horrible the bartenders here behave. I came here last week with my friend's co-workers. It was both a going away party for numerous staff members and 'yay, it's the end of the week for many people and long holiday weekend!' The place was inevitably packed. Not the thing that bugged me. I came in and was unsure what to order for both myself and another fellow. I managed to gain the attraction of one of the bartenders and asked if they had any specials and he laughed and said 'no'. Okay, then not knowing what to order I asked what beers they had, expecting a menu or him to offer a suggestion. No, he walks away and shouts "WE HAVE LOTS OF BEERS!" and throws up his hands. The other bartender throws, not hands me a menu. Wonderful. After conferring with the dude I was ordering a drink for we finally settle on just getting a round of Millers and calling it a night. I put my order in and one of the bartenders shouts at the other bartender: "After all of that she ordered a Miller High Life." They start laughing at me and I almost don't want to pay for the drinks. This place fails so hard at having any amount of manners. Yeah, understood that one can get flustered when a place is packed but making fun of the drink I ordered? Really messed up and unprofessional. Elsewise, Yelpers describe this as a higher class dive bar. There is no food but there is a pretty decent beer menu and climate controlled wine on tap. You will pay extra money for your drinks in a dive setting mostly because of its location. Though, there is the appeal of a huge shuffle board table in the back room. I can't see myself coming back here after the circumstances that happened even though they do have Harpoon Chocolate stout on their menu that someone else ordered for me later on and that's love in a bottle. Historically I've liked this place alright--I've come here way back since it was located across the street, so I've been pretty loyal over the years--but I'm writing this negative review because the female bartender with the glasses at this place is super rude; and has a real attitude problem. I've had my own issues with her in the past and I just saw her call some awkward guy ordering a beer from her at the bar a serial killer. I guess she thinks that's funny? Went in there with friends bought one drink and was cut off from all service after my first beer because i didn't tip. Maybe i broke an un written rule but when i tried to explain what was going on to the manager he told me they said i brought alcohol in the bar with some group that i didnt even know. CRAZY! Bartender smiled & waved when he seen what the manager said! I didn't proceed to play there game so I decided to leave & left a 15 on the bar table. No nonsense bar with shuffleboard. Great for groups or flying solo. Bartenders are what makes this bar amazing! Attentive, accurate, and engaging! Bartender nicknamed JJ was rude and disrespectful to customers. He refused to serve us and continued to ignore my friends and I for 15 mins. Once we finally got his attention he said he wouldn't serve us. He continued to not only serve us but also continued to give us attitude. His service or lack there of, was not only rude but entirely unprofessional. read more

The shuffleboard is a lot of fun. Went on a very empty monday niight and our drunk friend wandered behind the bar looking for his phone. The bartender could have been cool about it and we tried to apologize but he was a grade A asshole and started screaming at my friends and I to leave after we had spend a good deal of money in the bar. Fun bar but the bathrooms smell absolutely horrid. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE!!!!!! They smell like Plugs invited all of NYC's homeless population to come pee on every surface of the bathroom and a little bit into the bar area. Not to mention the floor is soaking wet. Nice bar. Laid back vibe. Wasn't too crowded. The bartenders were super nice. Drinks were nyc prices but they had a lot of options for beer that were on tap. The crowd for this kind of Bar was a lot of guys - but not douchey.... they also have shuffle board games in the back. read more

Have had Yelp for years and it took last Saturday at plug uglies to get me to write a review. Not in 15 years of going to bars have a I come across bartenders worse than the 2 dudes working last Saturday afternoon. I've never had a harder time trying to get a beer in my life. Routinely, my 2 friends and I would have to get up from our seats at the bar and walk down to where the bartender was chatting up a group of girls and ask him for rounds of beers and he would finish his conversation. With the place packed he was casually walking up and down the bar ignoring customers unlike anything I've ever seen. Used to frequent the old spot but I'll never go back now. It should be higher than 1 $, not a dive bar anymore, wait an hour for a shuffleboard game if you're lucky. read more

I want to give this bar more stars, but i literally had trouble breathing in the bathroom. Most bathrooms in the city are just ok. This was horrendous. It smelt like stale pee that had been there for weeks. The bartenders were just texting on their phone. Not the best look. And i literally felt unclean in the bathroom. A few weekends back my friends and I stumbled in here for some cocktails. We both opted for the "Murray-hill Mule"; a clever play on words until we realized the horrible consequences ... Terrible flatulence and diarrhea. Since we both wanted to keep drinking and not go home we decided to make a spirited competition out of it. The winner would be determined by the last person to use the bathroom. Unfortunately during a test run, I discovered that even drinking just half of one caused me to be tapping out and running full sprint to the bathroom! To much of a risk with the Saturday night crowds getting to be at full capacity. Thank God I was wearing my Ex Office Give-N-Go Briefs and it was so crowded no one would know where it was coming from. And the great music choices with deep base helped to contain the rush of farts that I experienced until I made it the bathroom. Since drinking even just half of one of these devious little mules caused us to make Chernobyl in our pants, we decided to devise a new game that incorporated the wonderful shuffle board this bar has to offer in the back. Every time you lost, that person would have to chug a "Murray-Mule". You win in one of two ways: 1. Hold out and do not pass gas at all during the game in fear it will lead to much bigger problems in ones pants; or 2. Being able to distinguish between the flatulence and runny solids and passing enough gas to drive your competitors away. We both quickly learned that it's critical to have good form when shuffle boarding due to the rapid cheek movement. It wasn't long before my opponent tapped out and was rushing to the bathroom. I attribute my fantastic win to all the Kegel exercises I perform at work and on the daily subway commute. It's all worth noting the bathrooms feel like walking into a dirty Tetris game - everything was jammed in at bizarre angles in order to make it fit. It's weird to be able to squat, wash my hands, air dry my hands, and touch all four walls while squatting without even fully extending my arms. Brilliantly the door opens inward so I actually have to almost step around the toliet like some kind of cunning poopie-trap for the weary contortionist defecator. Needles to say it was a great night and I highly recommend the place. We just have to stop drinking these things... No one wants to sit with us. read more

I ordered a Moscow mule and couldn't tell if there was actually any alcohol in it. It was very weak. I usually drink crispin from the bottle, and when I ordered draft it tasted way different and extremely sour. I do think I will come back for trivia night though. That was a lot of fun to watch - I came too late to play. The drinks really brought the rating down but it's a cool bar to hang out at. read more

What a beautiful new addition to the neighborhood! The entire decor is hand crafted from the beautiful hand laid ceiling to the old fashioned brick wall right down to the map of the original 5 points! We hosted a friends party here, and they were so accommodating. It was hard to keep others out of our reserved area, but the staff did their best to make sure we were having fun. Would definitely recommend for others to host an event here. read more

Shameful and unprofessional behavior from the bartender during our visit on the Saturday before Christmas. A group of us checked this place out and were having fun on the shuffleboard table, which I found very impressive as a bar offering. We spent close to 3 hours there I would say and spent a considerable amount of money in our time there. One of the bartenders was very nice and attentive. The other bartender was displeased with the amount of tips that she received and didn't hesitate to let us know on our way out. I, myself, bought a round of shots from the nice girl and tipped appropriately. On my way out, I ordered two shots from the other bartender who wouldn't even look me in the eye or acknowledge me when I spoke to her. She reluctantly poured me two shots (which typically I would leave a $4 tip or more for, depending) but I decided to leave her $1 due to her rude demeanor toward me. She grabbed the dollar bill from the bar, and in front of the other customers..she literally waved It in my face and said "thanks for your generosity". When I politely asked what the attitude was for she blatantly walked away and ignored me. Mind you, this was my first interaction with this girl all night. She finally came back over and according to her, the people I was with did not give her the amount of money that she expected. She rolled her eyes and smirked at me and in her words said "We expect a dollar per drink served. Merry Christmas, have a nice day". I am far from a confrontational person so I was caught very off guard by this girl and wanted to clarify any misunderstanding. She continued to ignore me. When I told her that It was wrong that she was speaking to me that way and that I tipped appropriately on my first round of shots, her response was "Good for you." And walked away again. As a previous bartender and bar manager, I was appalled at the unprofessional behavior by this girl. As someone who has previously worked in the business, I understand a bartender's frustration when patrons fail to tip appropriately, but I would NEVER stoop to the level of waving a tip in a paying customers face and call them out on not giving me what I expect. Awful, awful interaction with this girl. It's too bad, we were going to bring a lot of business there because of the shuffleboard and book a potential post Christmas party. ****Moral of the story, make sure your wallets are full enough to meet the bartenders expectations or you will be called out!*** read more

Just threw a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend at plug uglies last night and I couldn't be any happier with the place. First off, from the owner to the bartenders to the party planner, they were all amazing. Very very nice people who helped out a lot with the party. We did an open bar that included wine beer and vodka. Plug uglies was an awesome atmosphere with great people and everyone had a amazing time there! read more

Alone in New York, I stumbled here quite on accident, thinking that my day couldn't be worse. Boy, was I positively surprised! The atmosphere was lively but reasonable, and the bartenders a delight. Shuffleboard was an interesting game to have there, and while I didn't play at all, it fit the feel of the bar 100%.
