I've been to Po' Melvin's twice now, and both times my food has been served up fresh, hot and delicious! I usually sit in the bar area with the little juke boxes on the walls next to the booths. Once you sit, someone comes to take your drink order and drops off a cup of iced scallions. I usually like to munch on mine, but I notice a lot of people just leave them on the table as a sort of decoration. The first time I was there, I got the fried shrimp. The salad that came out before it wasn't ooo-la-la amazing, but I'm not a salad person anyway, so it didn't bother me. The shrimp and fries were quite delicious though. The second time, I got the chicken fried chicken po'boy with jalapeno cornbread on the side. The sandwich was HUGE. It put a Subway $5 footlong to shame, shame shame! I was able to finish about half of what was on my plate before I felt like I would have to roll out of the restaurant. I managed to nibble a few bites of the jalapeno cornbread, which wasn't really spicy, but had the great flavors of cheddar, sweet onion and corn that definitely pleased the mouth. Homestyle/southern restaurants are hard to come by these days, which is why I was so thrilled to find Po' Melvin's! The whole family went with me and we were not disappointed. I ordered the chicken fried chicken and it was delicious! The best part? You can cut it with just a fork, that is how tender the chicken is. The gravy is simple and delicious, as well as the mashed potatoes. My brother ordered the catfish and was pleasantly surprised to see it was a REAL piece of catfish. A nice and thick piece of fish. I will definitely be ordering it next time we go. The waiter was extremely nice and the atmosphere was great. The only disappointment of the night were the green beans. Po' Melvin's is goooood. Like the other reviewers said, the menu is basically half Southern cooking and half Cajun. They have wonderfully delicious and bad for you fried shrimp and chicken. Their cajun catfish and chicken is also really good. I pretty much always get the cajun catfish with dirty rice. The mashed potatoes are yummy. The fried okra is kinda hit or miss - sometimes it's a little soggy. A lot of people have mentioned the mediocrity of the salad. Po' Melvins is not a place where you go for salad. This is where you go for items of the non-vegetable variety. Luckily, they let you skip the salad and get another side instead. One thing about Po' Melvins that I do not like, is that they put jalapenos in the cornbread. I know that's very non-Southern of me, but I don't care. I'm a cornbread purist. read more

The Boyfriend had never had Cajun food before, so I looked this place up on Yelp. I certainly was not disappointed! It's a pretty low-key kind of place, located in a shopping center. We were seated immediately upon entering (and let me tell you, the smell when you walk in is beyond awesome), and drink orders were taken. We got fried pickles to start, because if fried pickles are on a menu, I'm going to get them. They were piping hot, we had to wait a couple of minutes before we could eat them! We both ordered the blackened catfish, but substituted sides. Fries and green beans for him, rice and cabbage for me. The food is nothing special to look at, let me tell you. It says "Down Home Cooking" right on the restaurant, so don't expect anything gourmet, or even pretty. It tastes awesome, though! They do serve alcohol, although I didn't partake. Forget the bad reviews! I'm a regular here for lunch and AH-MAZING!!! It starts with the service. Daryl is the best server EVER! So nice and personable, and he'll remember your order! I always pick his section! IT doesn't end there! Melvin (the third) walks around, talks to you, ensures you are enjoying your dining experience. He's even brought out lil samples of other dishes for you to try! Cannot say enough about these guys! Now to the actual food, DELICIOUS. It's always fresh, always hot and so full of flavor. Vegetarian? their veggie plate (3 sides + salad) will tickle your tastebuds and leave you more than satisfied! Love seafood? The fried shrimp is number 1, hands down. This is some damn good food!! If yolu like cheese fries, this is your place! And I'd suggest only a half order, because it's huge...and it's COVERED in a ton of melted cheese. Totally yummy! The only drawback of it is that they don't have sour cream for the loaded chedder fries. They've got chives, ranch and BACON..but sour cream just kind of makes it. Minor gripe tho. Shrimp and Sausage Jambalaya is not served as a bed of yellow rice under slices of sausage with the biggest balls of gristle you've ever seen under a few large cocktail shrimp with the tails still attached. So much delicious food! I think my plate had about 5,000 calories of deliciousness on it. If you don't love fried fatty delicious foods, than this isn't the place for you. The only downside to the restaurant is that you can smoke inside, so you leave smelling like an ash tray. If you look past the smell, the food here is delicious! read more

My dinner party and I sat down (wow--I should never use the term dinner party in conjunction with any restaurant with the word "Po'" in it again) and were presented some fresh green onions in ice. We debated what this was all about, and an old lady who was born in the country said that this was undoubtedly a country thing. Another interesting thing they do is here charge you for the cornbread. It is advertised as "a delicious cake of buttermilk, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, onion, and corn." It is actually far from that. It is rather dense, stale, not heavy on the jalapeno, corn, or cheddar flavor. Yes, $1.50 is not bad, but... come on. I get free cornbread that tastes twice as god. Back to the actual restaurant. Sorry for flopping around. The layout is rather confusing--you wrap around a long bend and head into the dining room that has a boatload of smoke smell. Luckily, the service is solid, and the offerings are fairly affordable. Most things are right around the $10 range. They do a hodgepodge of sides, but most are not anything extraordinary. Some of the better ones that I would recommend would be the black eyed peas.... and... well, that was pretty much the best one out of the group. The yams were too sticky and sweet, and the red beans and rice were salty and a little lacking in texture. The chicken and dumplings was quite good. The taste was spot on, and the texture was better than most. It did not have any sort of special nuances to it, but it was certainly a comforting plate of messy glop... a far cry from the stuff you used to get served in IISD. Is that the name of Irving ISD? I'd assume so. Po Melvin's is not specifically for Po' folk, but it does the job for a dining experience that is bare bones. Some fancy people have come across these parts of town, as you can tell from the massive array of people's pictures. Football players, musicians, and all sorts of celebrities. Po' Melvin's is excellent southern food. Almost everything is great there, but some of the sides need a little work. The Ham and Yams is very good (beware, really sweet), the meatloaf is great, the mashed potatoes are good, and the Po' Boys are good. I would avoid the carrots, they seem to taste like nothing. Anything with their gravy on it is a winner, though. They also have reasonable drink specials from the bar, and the entrees are about $7 for a ton of food. This visit was horrible! Everything was extremely overly salted! Everything! The fried pickles couldn't be swallowed because they were so salty! The grilled chicken steak was disgusting! Their grilled chicken salad, which was always a favorite in my book, was also layered in so much salt I couldn't even eat it! Some of the best, downhome, Southern style cooking in DFW. I have been coming here for more than 15 years. It is more of a Louisiana style home cooking with great fried seafood, gumbo, chicken fried steak (not chicken, for those of you not familiar with this delicacy), and poboys. Oh..and red beans and rice, roast beef, and more. :) Very laid back environment. Home style place. Good spot for a quick bite. Stopped by for lunch with a friend of mine while on Dallas for work. He figured it would be a nice spot to roll to. Nice location. Very clean. Staff seated us right away and got sunlit drinks quick. I was trying to watch what I was eating so I settled for grilled pork chops, green beans, corn, and carrots. To start with they are really clean. I was shocked about that because often Southern places can be kinda greasy. Drinks. I like that they use large drink cups. Makes me less likely to need a refill Service. My server was Alberto he was very friendly and I did not have to wait on anything. 5 out 5. Food. The food was good but closer to diner food. I would say somewhere between a 3.5 and 4. I had meatloaf with red sauce. The tomato sauce was too sweet for my taste. The meatloaf was good. I had mashed potatoes, navy beans and fried okra. The okra tastes great but was slightly cool like it needed 30 seconds more in the fryer. My navy beans were great and seasoned well. Mashed potatoes were also slightly cool and had the texture of instant. My bread was room temp. I prefer hot bread even if it it is tossed in a microwave for 20 seconds. It was also kinda dense. Po Melvin's came highly recommended by 2 friends, so my expectations were high. And I was sorely disappointed. Our entire party of 5 did not enjoy their meals. I had the red beans and rice and a porkchop. The beans were bland and mushy but the porkchop was very delicious. My other friend had jambalaya which had like 4 or 5 boiled shrimp and a bed of dry seasoned rice. My other friends shared a chicken fried steak which they said tasted ok but their vegetables were flavorless. My other friend had the same and was similarly unimpressed. They also ordered the jalapeno cornbread which tasted like a cardboard. I can admit the service was great! Our server was very attentive, but the smell of ciggarette smoke from the bar was not palatable. Good place to go to if you want some southern home cookin. Their portions are huge, the food is delicious, and staff was nice. I ordered to go and got the chicken and dumplings and meatloaf entrees. Their entrees come with 3 sides and a roll or you can substitute a cup of red beans and rice for 2 of the sides. I got the fresh greens, boiled cabbage, fried okra, and cup of red beans and rice, and I also got some jalapeño corn bread. It was all so good, and it hit the spot. Too bad they don't serve Mac and Cheese. I think the chicken and dumplings were better than the meatloaf so next time I go back, that's probably what I'll get. The jalapeño corn bread was HUGE and delicious! I'm so glad I finally tried this place out and that it's pretty close to the house. I typically get the chicken fried steak or chicken with mashed potatoes, white gravy, and jalapeño cornbread. The protein portion is fairly sized. This was what i was most disappointed with and why i compare the level of food quality to a place like Black Eyed Pea or Babes ( cant even get close to babes btw ) Mashed Potatoes - very disappointed with these, any great Southern place should keep high standards.
