Ordered fried catfish, navy beans, greens and boiled cabbage (charged but didn't include in to go). Looks like they took a pre-breaded catfish filet off a Sysco truck as a dropped in dryer. It was so being and with no seasoning. Greens - BLAND. Navy beans had flavor surprisingly, but I'm leery. I wouldn't be surprised if that's from a can and they warmed it up as is. Heard about this place from a friend. So we stopped by. Servers are friendly. Sweet tea was wonderful: I ordered a big bowl of seafood gumbo. I was not pleased. There was no roux. I have been to this location twice. I have not been disappointed. We had fried shrimp as an appetizer. Simply delicious! Had fried catfish, red beans and rice and French fries for the entree. The fish was well seasoned, not over season but tasty seasoned, the red beans and rice weren't my favorite but I ate them. The French fries were enough for two. The staff were incredible, great service. A waitress went as far ask to ask me if I was cold, and I was, then told our server and they adjusted the air conditioner. Stick to your ribs style New Orleans and Southern staples are the name of the game at Po' Melvin's. I was tempted to get a shrimp po' boy, but instead opted for the New Orleans style red beans and rice that also has sausage. You get a choice of a grilled or fried pork chop, and I opted for the former. The pork chop was cooked to the exact temperature I was looking for, and seasoned to perfection. The chop is more of a thinner slice, so the dish as a whole doesn't become too heavy and this allowed me to sample some dessert. The dessert in this case was bread pudding that was done with a rum sauce and served a la mode. This dessert could easily be shared by two people, and the vanilla ice cream - pudding combination was great. Jalapeno cornbread was savory with a slight kick. Spread some of the butter they provide and you've got a good side. I do wish it was a little less dense though. If you're looking for non-fussy Louisiana/Southern fare, then this is a good joint to check out. read more

Had a friend recommend this place to me so I came in to try it on a Saturday night. Started off with the bayou balls which are twice baked potatoes, battered and fried. They were nice not oily and the batter had a nice texture to it and was not too thick. Then for the entree I had the grilled pork chops blackened which includes 3 sides. I chose the mash potatoes with gravy, cabbage, and corn. I wish the pork chops were a bit thicker because they were a little bit on the dry side. The sides were great tasty and fresh. We came for a relative's birthday. They had been here before for someone else's celebration and enjoyed it so we figured it'd be good this time too. It wasn't. I think the private room was free but the food was very mediocre. My gator punch wasn't mixed well so I either sipped thick syrup or just the alcohol. The waitress seemed to have an attitude but she was still mostly pleasant. I am cautious eating Cajun inspired food. It seems that flaming hot instead of flavorful is what some people think Cajun food should be. Well, not here! Customer service is great. Greated at the door... very friendly. Bar is also nice and neat and well put together. Order was brought out to me fast. I got the seafood order. Comes with Fish, Shrimp, Crabcake, a buscit, fries and a side salad. I ordered Cajun rice on the side. Fish had great breading flavor, and very tender. Shrimp was breaded perfectly but lacked any real flavors. Crabcake was very dry with no flavor. Cajun rice had absolutely no flavor. Fries were soft and Soggy with no flavor or Seasoning. Went today for lunch and it pains me to give a negative review. We were seated right away and server was at our table quick. Took our drink order and returned to take or food order. Food came out promptly. I had meatloaf with a salad mashed potatoes and black eyed peas. Meatloaf was blah, potatoes had a funky taste like instant. Peas were ok. Girlfriend got chicken and dumplings with carrots cabbage and okra. Carrots and cabbage had zero taste. Dumplings and okra were good. Overpriced tea at $3.75 Best thing about our food was the corn bread. Our server was great and everyone was super nice. It pains me to write a negative review because everyone was nice but the lackluster food was a disappointment. We were hoping for much better. I may go back and try something else someday. read more

Oh my, this was not what I expected. I went in excited to finally try this place (my husband has talked about it for years), but either it is not the same place he rememberers, or his ability to pick a good place to eat has improved. The bread was hard and uneatable - how do you service it that way!!! I had the Southern Style Baked Ham & Yams. Something I would not expect you could get wrong, but yet... It was like the food had been cooked and rewarmed. We did arrive later in the afternoon, so maybe it would be better if you arrive at lunch time when the food is freshly prepared. Love the name of the restaurant. The inside was cozy and comfortable. The drinks were delicious and slap yo momma good. I would give the cocktails 4 stars. I tried some greens and cornbread. The greens were fresh, but boring and bland. I didn't taste any seasoning. The cornbread looked good, but was dry and equally flavorless. In fact this was the worst greens and cornbread I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I tried to pour hot sauce on it and it was still blah. So the food is 0 stars. Overall the drink saved them. Well, I came here looking for gumbo, etoufee, or jambalaya, or even crawfish enchiladas. They have none of those. I'm not sure why they say "Creole/Cajun"? Enlighten me, please. I ended up having the stuffed green peppers with cabbage and yams. I guess it's Southern home-made cooking, but nothing to write home about. I have made better stuffed peppers. It surprised me that there was no seasoning on anything. I added a ton of black pepper and some salt because there was nothing on it. But now we get to the part that is the reason I am writing this review, other than I was so disappointed that I didn't get to, at least, have a bowl of gumbo!: I was offered the blackberry or blueberry cobbler. They did not have blueberry, it turns out, even though the server offered it first. So I got the blackberry cobbler. Mind you, it is supposed to be "cobbler"... but it wasn't. It was a pie inside a bowl and the pie crust was very tough and stuck to the roof of my mouth. The blackberry compote was unseasoned, and I think it came from a can. The best thing about it was the vanilla bean ice cream. All of this for $35. I hope I don't "need" to say it, but I feel like I really "want" to say it: Shock and awe, but in a bad way. I think I would have rather had a bowl of Instant Ramen for $1 at my local 7-11. Lesson learned. Expensive lesson, but learned. read more

I met up with my brother and nephew for lunch at Po' Melvin's, my brother raved about this restaurant and I trusted his judgement since our background is of Creole descent. We started with ordering a round of drinks, for appetizers we had the garden salad and fried pickles, they also bring over complimentary bread. The salad was fresh, the pickles were pretty tasty and the bread had a homemade taste to it...two thumbs up. Entree's I ordered the gumbo, I was not in the least bit impressed it needed more flavor. My nephew ordered the spicy chicken strips that comes with a side of fries, he only took a few bites at his age tabasco would be too spicy for him. My brother ordered the fried shrimp that comes with a side of fries as well. This is his favorite so of course he loved it and devoured it. Overall the meal was pretty good, I would like to go back to try some of the other dishes. read more

We absolutely love Po Melvins. I do not know why people complain or give 1 star. They are either picky or where in a bad mood that day. I went once a long long time and today Easter Sunday we decided to drive after church from hurst Tx. I got the grilled blackened pork chops, yams, black eye peas and greens and okra. It was all delicious and I finished all of it. The rolls came with the food but I paid no attention to them until the end and they where delicious. I also tried the beef roast gravy delicious! My kid didn't like the fried shrimp basket. She's a kid so I loved them though. Try PM!! read more

Mainly a 2 because of the disappointing Peach cobbler. It tasted as if it was a cobbler from Tom Thumb or the Local Kroger. I take that back, I've had better from those stores. I had written a review of Po' Melvin's back in 2012 (ten years ago, wow!) and the restaurant has changed very much since then! We went a week or so ago for lunch and I was amazed at the changes. The interior was completely changed (no buffet) with nice booths and tables and colorful New Orlean-sy stuff hanging around the ceiling. I liked it. The menu has changed from down home food to be slanted toward New Orleans type creole/cajun. I had the shrimp po' boy and fries. The shrimp in the po' boy is excellent - big shrimp with a nicely spiced batter nestled in a very soft bun with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, etc. The bread fell apart on me half way through the first half of the po' boy, so I just pulled that great shrimp out and ate it with tartar sauce. They were very good. Next time I won't bother with the bun and will get the shrimp plate! A very generous portion of fries, but they need to be fried a little longer. They're a little limp. Service was very good. Warning - iced tea is $3.75! I know prices are going up, but that's way too high for iced tea. Next time, water for me. We'll be coming back to try some of the other dishes and I look forward to it. read more

Delicious! We were promptly sat down and the waiter brought a cup of water with some green onions in it (not sure why though, palate cleanser?). Ordered some appetizers, jalapeño poppers and fried pickles. The jalapeño poppers were your typical deep fried jalapeño poppers. The fried pickles were good. They weren't over battered to the point where you can't taste the pickle and were fried to perfection. The main dishes came out what seemed like minutes after we ordered. Which was appreciated since we were starving! For the entree I had the chicken fried chicken with greens, yams, and black eyed peas. The chicken fried chicken was perfect! It was nice and juicy, not dried out and perfectly fried. I recommend the black eyed peas, however they prepared them was delicious. The yams were...yams. The greens were ok, probably won't get them again, just not much flavor. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other items. read more

This was the worst meal I have ever had!! I remembered eating here when they first started years ago and was looking forward to good a good meal. I had catfish, okra and salad. Catfish was rubbery, Okra was cooked so much it was burned, Salad tasted days old. How do you screw up a salad??? My Mom had chicken fried chicken, Which was so tough it could not be eaten. Horrible. Ordered Meatloaf with greens, okra and cabbage. The meatloaf looked like sliced processed meat and took one bite and spit in napkin.The greens were cold and not fully cooked as well as the fried okra was mushy grease. I only at a couple bites of cabbage. My granddaughter ordered the fried shrimp with french fries and a side salad. The shrimp tasted bad was soggy batter all grease not even cooked crispy so she took a bite of that and that was the end of that didn't eat the french fries which looked and imagine tasted disgusting so she ate a little bit of her side salad. The manager still charged us $23 for a half a cup of cabbage that I ate two soft drinks and a bite of shrimp beware take your money elsewhere!! read more

Well, they must be doing something right if there are so many old people eating there. Old people gravitate towards quality comfort food which inclines me to trust this place. This was my first time trying gumbo. It was a bit underwhelming, but I think that's because I'm not a fan of crab, and the crab in this dish is very overpowering. I was pretty happy with the Greek Salad. Some cafe salads taste like they came from a bag, but all the ingredients on this, including the feta, taste fresh. read more

I didn't have a very good dining experience at Po' Melvin's. Cleanliness was a major gross-out factor. On the way to the bathroom, I almost slipped twice on the greasy tile floors, and the whole place smelled of dirty mop water. I don't know what kind of cleaning products the restaurant uses, but I recommend they upgrade ASAP. The giant frozen margarita looked refreshing, but tasted slushy and was also light on tequila. The spinach salad didn't wow me, either - it was smothered with cheese crumbles and way too much of some kind of bacon-flavored topping, drowning out the flavor of the fresh spinach. Check out the picture. I did enjoy the seafood gumbo - a nice-sized portion with just the right amount of spice (also see picture). I've been coming here for the past 9 years, a lot less the past few years because I don't work in the area anymore. This place is a bit of a hidden gem in DFW! A lot of the folks that come here are regulars or have come here for years and that's a testament to the food and the staff. The portions here are pretty big and there's never been a time where I've left this place not completely stuffed! My favorites are the fried catfish (usually with fried okra as the side) or the fried/grilled pork chops (also available with red beans & rice). Just an FYI, the cup with the green onion sprigs in ice aren't there for decoration! I like to take a take a bite of the green onion with each bite of fish or pork chop. For dessert I usually like the bread pudding. It's a bit too rich to have on your own, but definitely a perfect portion when shared. read more
