I'll start off by saying that I think it's probably a good place. They probably do good things. However, the owner is not nice. In the messages she just started swearing and all caps at us through text message. I think it's pretty telling that she has reviews turned off on facebook (because they would probably all be negative). My experience was she didn't know enough or didn't ask enough before agreeing to help an injured stray we found get adopted. Our agreement: We foster the stray, PDP would pay for the vet and try to find (a) - a forever home or (b) - another foster to take over if the stray is not ready by the end of May. Well I guess things weren't moving quickly enough for her because she lost her temper, she gave up on us and this stray. Should have agreed to help us, but she did and she and the problem is she didn't follow through. Not even close. She told us we would need to abandon the stray to where we found it. At this point we've started to look for other animal welfare organizations to step in and help with finding a foster, however, Alicia wants twice the adoption fee to transfer the vet records to another organization. We had tried to communicate with her frequently, maybe as much as every other day, yet we would not hear back from her for days. At the end of it all, she called us losers and pieces of shit. We called them to see when was the next time they would be in Waipio CORPS and showed up between the time they said to be there on a certain Saturday 330-4pm. Brought all my dogs here to get chipped for an affordable price. Lady we encountered was friendly. Back story: One of my dogs ran away and even though I called Hawaiian Humane society, someone put him in Oahu SPCA in Wahiawa, ended up chucking out some scripts to get him back (paid for room and boarding? Something like that). Lesson learned. I didn't even know that place even existed. Poi dogs is a non-profit and I have heard a positive review from my coworker so we gave them a call. These are the rudest and most condescending people to answer the phone. I know this is not a shelter or a boarding organization as their website says that. Had you let me talk instead of rudely cuting me off you would have known that I worked with you guys in 2020 to get two sick kittens fostered through your program. I found this dog last week and tried to return it to the dog sitter who treated the dogs like shit and left them in the car because they kept running away. The owner is in the hospital for a heart attack and can't leave as he is now in a rehabilitation care home. I was trying to do what was right for the dog and try to hold on to him but I leave for military obligations and now I have to find other living arrangements for him. No resources or advice of given until I said I am taking the dog to the humane society. Was that so hard?? What is the point in helping these animal on our own time and money just to get disrespected for what I thought was a good thing. I have spent close to $600 on this dog without a damn if this complete stranger pays me back. All I want is for the owner to give it a better home as he will mostly likely not be able to care for himself in his condition and the dog. This business is an animal charity. My husband and adopted 2 cats from them in last 2022. We then became pregnant with our son and welcomed him to our lives. A few weeks after he was born we started noticing rashes developing on his skin. After some doctors appointments we were able to determine that it may have been an allergic reaction to our cats. We decided to rehome the cats and found what we thought was a nice family. Fast forward a few months and I get a call from a woman named Alicia Maluafit. She left a voicemail and stated she was from the company and that one of our cats had been found. Not 10 minutes later I get a call from an unknown number, no voicemail is left. I get three more calls from this number, my husband received three calls from this number and then we each received a text message asking "is this so and so". As I'm making dinner about 15 minutes later there is a knock on my door. This incredibly rude woman says she has my cat. I proceeded to tell her that the cats no longer lived with us. She continues to call us irresponsible and threatens to call our chain of command (we live on a military installation). I asked her to leave and she did. Stalling in my frustration and replaying what just happened I realized that she must have been given our address from poi dogs and popoki as she wasn't an employee of there's. I then contacted Alicia from the initial voicemail. Not only did she not apologize for giving away my personal address and phone number to this volunteer but she actually doubled down on the threat of contacting the base commander and then threaten to post my family's name and address on their facebook page to "let everyone on our post know that we don't take care of animals." This company gave away personal information to someone who is not an employee, they came to my home and threatened me, and then threatened me again after I called to complain. UFB experience! Total Bitch! Tried to help cat after cat's adoptee abandoned cat. She called me every name in the book after 2 months of attempting to adapt cat to current cat, did not work had lived feral for about a year. Sent cat to a no kill rescue. She refused to transfer chip number even though the owner moved cat to mainland 2 years before and never transferred chip. Fortunately shelter talked to her and transferred chip, they have the power to do it if original chipper found unstable. Cat was adopted within a week. Okay, the only reason I'm doing 3 stars is because years ago I had a great experience when I took my kitties to get fixed at their pop up location. I still think this is a great non-profit who does great things for the lives of our furry friends BUT I had the most horrible phone conversation with one of their staff today. Here's how it went. First! A Small backstory: we've had 4 stray kittens for about 2 weeks and tried finding them furever homes on our own before attempting to hand them over to a non-profit. We didn't have much luck with that and only re-homed one of them. So I was recommended to call PD&P When I spoke with them, they gave me advice and basically told me that it's all my fault that I waited this long to contact them cause now they are full so too bad. She proceeded to tell me that I need to drive across the island (which I was totally willing to do) to take the cats to get fixed and when I explained that I may not have a vehicle (since I share one with my husband and have two small children) she said "well then you BETTER find a vehicle to drop them off cause that's your only option". Like wth?! I am truly shocked at the way I was treated over the phone. If they want to avoid people just dumping kittens off on the side of the road, then I think some grace over the phone would do them well. Again I am sad at the fact that I'm writing this. I'm very happy with the services offered and received by Poi Dogs and Popoki. I found them to be responsive to both emailed questions and Facebook messenger. They answered all of the questions this new kitty mom had regarding her spay, shots, how to book an appointment and even some concern I had when she wasn't interested in eating or drinking the day after her surgery, which went very well. Their van is parked all over the island in very convenient locations each month. We visited them at the Ewa Beach Petco parking lot where we arrived about 20 minutes into check-in time. There were already a number of cat moms and dads (one with NINE feral kittens) and the ladies at the table took care of my little one right away. There were no sales pitches and the prices are beyond reasonable. $80 for her spay, microchip, first vaccines, and deworming meds. She was ready to go home after about 3 and a half hours. I have not had any of the issues other yelpers mention in their reviews. You will get emails from the Found Animals Registry but once you fill out the information on your pet, just opt out of receiving them (as I did). Happy kitty, happy kitty mommy. I explained we had a trip coming up that we were prepping for as well. She would just go around the question by asking other questions. She had asked if my pups had any vacc. I said yes at the Haiku vet in Kahalulu. Later that day she told me I had to drop them off at a vet in Mililani. I told her there was no way I could get out there with my schedule. Alicia really struck a nerve when she messaged me and said that Kahaluu is farther than Mililani. I'm pretty sure I'm well aware of distance! I pointed out that the vacc. Were done 2 weeks before when I had an open window. Truly this company was not honest and up front in the beginning. Her rude attitude added to it. After reading the comments here- I'm so glad that my pups didn't go through them and went to a nice home I found on my own. Totally understandable, it's a busy kitten season and many animals need emergency help. But the lady didn't have to be condescending about it. She basically talked to me like I shouldn't have helped the kitten in the first place if I wasn't prepared to foster. Was I supposed to just let it get hit by a car by the road??? Not worth the time or effort. Messaging PDP on Facebook I expected a professional mature exchange. I was sadly mistaken. PDP conducted themselves in an immature fashion and wasted my time. I found two pups covered in fleas and ticks on the side of the road. I took them home to clean them and find them a permanent home. I discovered they had tape worms. The head of the household (small apartment) was not ok with this and no one I called wanted pups with tape worms. I had messaged the company on Facebook to see if they could take in the puppies. The person messaging me was rude, controlling, unhelpful, and lashed out with put downs. I explained that I can't keep the pups and I need to find them a home quick. The responses were full of misinformation about how tape worms are not contagious. After plain out asking if I could bring the pups to PDP, they responded "No we are not a brick and mortar shelter."... I was confused by this because PDP's website says it's a shelter. We came to Petsmart in Mililani looking to adopt a cat and all went well until we applied on their QR Code website. A worker from the organization called us and not only was she unprofessional but she was super rude and condescending. My husband and I wanted to adopt this kitten that was in the Petsmart in Mililani. We filled out the application and while waiting for them to get back to us, we decided to buy essentials and such for the little guy. For context, I am Hawaiian and grew up in Honolulu, my husband, however, is from New Mexico and is in the army, he is med boarding in a handful of months (we do not have the date due to his job being incompetent). We do not live in our own apartment or home. 1, Hawaii is expensive to rent, (we all know that) 2, housing in base is IMPOSSIBLE and 3, even if we were to rent a nice place they either don't allow pets or don't have a short lease for us. Our amazing friends offered us to stay in base with them so we wouldn't need to drive so far and worry about having a roof over our heads over the next few months this year. They have a very spacious house and the room we stay in is so big that it echos. I'm telling you all this because it relates to why I'm rating this company very low. Our friends were thrilled to have a cat roaming in the house, we all cleaned the house and organized it today. A woman by the name of Mel called and she was insanely rude. She was very nosy about our "situation" and every question she asked had nothing to relate to as to why we were for pet parents. She then started being very stereotypical about the fact that we were military members, asking things such as "why don't you just rent a house outside of base? Doesn't your husband have the money to afford it?" Or "why don't you guys have your own house in the base? Don't they make it easy for you people?" I was astonished, she made it very clear she was not going to approve our application. Mel said she'll talk with her team and "we'll see from there" in such an unsure tone. She did not say "bye" or "have a nice day" or anything, she hung up so abruptly. We talked for 6 minutes and within those minutes she was just mean, judgmental and terrible. HOURS LATER, close to 8, I got impatient and texted her for an update. She immediately texted back saying we were denied because we don't have our own home and that we don't know an exact date as to when we're leaving the island. Which made them believe we were unfit to adopt. And said we had an "unstable living environment". Mel didn't even apologize or anything. I do not recommend this company, I'm just glad to know I wasn't the only person who got screwed over by these people. My husband and I are very sad about this and we just hope someone is up to their standards and finally give this cat a home. These cats have been in this store for MONTHS, and still none of them have been adopted. PDP SUCKS, I hope this company shuts down soon. F this place. I filled out an application for a cat and had a very brief phone interview. I got a text saying my app was denied. I responded "can I ask why? Thank you for your time!" And They blocked me. I tried another number and they refuse to answer my calls or text me back now and l just wanted to know why I was denied. I am very confused seeing that the point of adopting is to adopt the pets out to forever homes and not hoard them in small cages. I have no reason to be denied. They also have 20-30 cats at the Kapolei petsmart location alone, and the one I was trying to give a loving forever home to seemed very stressed out there when I went in to visit. At the risk of sounding entitled, I want to preface this review by stating my history: I have worked in the veterinary field since 1999 and spent the past 7 years as the head of the surgery department of Hawaii's largest and most advanced veterinary hospital until I made the decision to move to human medicine. So in all, I have 20+ years of veterinary medicine under my belt. That being said, I am extremely thankful for organizations such as Poi Dogs & Popoki and people like Alicia Maluafiti (founder). It takes a special soul to do what she does - I love animals more than life itself but I could never live up to what Alicia does for the animal community on Oahu. She is the hardest working person in non-profit that I have ever met or had the pleasure of dealing with. The Big Fix spay/neuter and wellness vans are a godsend to those on Oahu who otherwise would not be able to afford veterinary care. This is an invaluable asset for the health and wellness of the dog and cat populations on Oahu. Some people complain about the organization, its founder, and/or The Big Fix but truth is, there would be a lot more homeless and deceased animals if it weren't for them. The spay/neuter clinic doesn't use the most modern and updated tactics that you would find at your general practice veterinarian, but then again, you should know that because you are asking for these services at an unimaginably discounted price. Their new spay/neuter veterinarian is excellent - she pays very close attention to every single patient, no matter if he/she is someone's pet or if he/she is a "feral" or a "foster". The Big Fix has come a long way since its beginning and it shows. The community should be thankful for organizations such as PDP who are able to help those less fortunate. We have taken our three cats to be fixed at Poi Dogs and Popoki's convenient locations (1st time was at Hawaii Kai and next times at Waimanalo). The ladies were so very nice and compassionate. We are able to conveniently make in line appointments and theyve really worked with us to fit in a smart hard to catch cat. Our feral (eventually our cat) mom cat was found to be pregnant and the veterinarian tearfully came to explain to us about her abortion. We were surprised but not shocked as she'd just had a litter. Came on 11/13/21 to take a look at the cats at the kapolei petsmart. The lady and 2 kids that were working there said were not allowed in because we need to have an application already filled out for one of the cats. According to the lady, this is a new policy. How does this make sense. Ive come multiple times to see if any cats have a suitable personality for my elder cat without needing to have a current application to adopt a cat. Why would i put in an application for a specific cat that i havent spent any time with. Seems like she was making up excuses to not let anyone else in because her kids wanted to take pictures and film the cats currently in there. For my animals sake I reached out for help and the staff are just not very helpful. I totally understand that they're on the animals side but they have to be able to work with people in order to find a solution for these animals. These organizations forget that it's also hard for the owners to surrender their pet, they don't know their life situation so they shouldn't judge people or criticize owners. Was treated very poorly at the Kapolei Petsmart..the volunteer who runs that location was extremely rude even though I was just asking a question about adopting from there. I gotta say we are satisfied with the service that we received from them when we got our dog spayed this Monday, September 2nd. I am grateful that they were there since it's Labor Day. The person that took our dog was very friendly to us and to our dog. The lady that was doing the papers was okay. I had heard great things about Poi Dogs and Popoki so was looking forward to the prospect of adopting an animal from them. We were originally denied adopting a cat from them due to a miscommunication with our management office. I tried to explain to Poi Dogs and Popoki that one of my pets is a service dog and they proceeded to request registration (doesnt exist) then they requested his service dog letter (illegal under ADA), they asked for other documentation that they claimed the state required (also non existent). I sent them the ADA laws for their review. They responded and told me I was reaching out to the wrong person so I reached out to management and the miscommunication was sorted out and they gave their approval. PD&P claimed that the reason for denial in the first place was management denial but when that was resolved, PD&P proceeded to continue to demand information on my service dog; IE: where was he trained, whats your doctors name etc. I asked multiple times if there was someone I could speak to and was ignored. I have made an ADA complaint but just was hoping to shed some light on the situation. This was pretty hurtful. We really felt attached to that cat and were very hopeful but were denied because I would not provide personal information on my service dog and disability. They are so awful. I took a stray cat I decided to adopt into my home, only to discover she was pregnant! Fast forward a couple of months and I need momma and all her kittens fixed! Absolutely by far the best rescue organization on the island Alisha and her staff have been magnificent /assisted me numerous times with feral cat rescues and kittens .... IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD! ALICIA IS A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE WOMAN!!! She is ungrateful and thinks her work of saving animals puts her above other people! She is rude and accusatory and more importantly DISCOURAGING to FOSTERS!!!! I have been caring for THREE of twelve newborn puppies for over a week now. I bathed them with Dawn and picked every single flea and tick off of them. I feed them three times a day with puppy milk (not cheap) and puppy food mixture and change their puppy pads twice a day if not three times a day (not cheap) all out of my own pocket!!! 7 of the other twelve NOT in my care have died! Yet she calls me a bad foster! Take a look at the picture and see for self what kind of foster I am! Clean environment!! Today one of the puppies started throwing up over and over clear liquid. Another puppy started in with diarrhea. They have been kept indoors the ENTIRE time since my husband brought them home from her little shindig with The Big Fix. I had texted her over three days to which she never replied about other things as well as today I sent "Hello" and the response I got was "sorry I've been recuperating from my golf tournament". Okay. She tells me someone needs to take the puppy to VCA Kapolei as a walk in but unfortunately my husband was called into work tomorrow and even though my mother is usually off on Mondays, she also has been called to work since another employee is off. So I tell Alicia no one is available to go to VCA and just wait with the puppy to be seen but that I will try and figure something out. She gets accusatory with me and says that we lied about caring for the puppies all day. Are you KIDDING ME?!! That was at roughly 4:30pm. I told my family about her attitude with me and how ungrateful she was when she spoke to me. Like I didn't give a shit. When I spoke to them, they were offended by her attitude and said that maybe I shouldn't participate with her anymore. At 7:30pm she texts me that VCA Kapolei will actually NOT take the puppy as a walk in but that she's going to check with another foster who's already treating for those symptoms and since the other 2 puppies not in my care tested negative for Parvo that she doesn't feel like these three have Parvo so the other foster should be able to treat. I told her sure can she take the rest since one is throwing up, one has diarrhea and leaving the other alone would make her very sad away from her sisters. She counts that as me "BAILING"!!! I was not going to address her CRAPPY attitude but since she wanted to go there I did! I have never been so offended while offering my help. My entire house has gone out of their way because SHE ASKED FOR HELP!!! To be treated this way by ALICIA is INSANE!!! I wouldn't suggest ANYONE entering puppies into her program or becoming a foster for her program! There are MANY other programs out there like Fur Angels Foundation, Hawaii Dog Foundation and Paws of Hawaii!!!!! Also, she never got back to me on when to get these puppies vaccinated and when I suggested that I had a family who was interested in adopting, she replied with "$250 for adoption and there will be an interview" Okay. No "wow that's great! Here's some information for them!" She is rude but one thing she IS NOT is GOD! I LOVE fostering!! And PDP does such amazing work getting all these cats and dogs vaccinated and fixed!! BUT working through Alicia who is I guess the foster coordinator is seriously the worst! She's so unbelievably rude for absolutely no reason. read more

I went to Petsmart on Nimitz and saw the cat adoption sign in the front of store. I had asked the cashier about the cat adoption and she mentioned that the adoption is handled by an outside company and that I could fill out an application and that the outside company (Poi dogs & Popoki) would reach out to me. Anyway, I filled out an application and received a call a several days later. Shaina with Poi dogs and Popoki called me and asked me several questions. After answering all her questions she says that my application is denied! I asked her why and she said that it's because I had a puppy in the past and that I had given my puppy to my aunt. I told her the only reason I gave my aunt my puppy is because she lives alone and she needed a companion. She then tells me that the adoption is not free. I told her I'm not looking for anything free! I just wanted to adopt a cat! I'll pay whatever fee. This company has a sign in Petsmart that seems so welcoming but they are rude and unprofessional. read more
