Poindexter Coffee is attached to a hotel so you don't get confused when looking it up on maps if walking. Street parking is available, but it's also just a quick walk from most of the downtown hotels, which makes it super convenient. I've been a few times now, and the drinks are consistently great -- the lattes are smooth and well-balanced, and the iced coffee is excellent too. I haven't tried the food yet, but honestly, the real draw here is the atmosphere. The space is small but thoughtfully designed: lots of natural light from the windows, plenty of outlets for plugging in, and a good mix of seating. It's the kind of place where you can bring a laptop and work comfortably, or just sit and enjoy a slow coffee break. read more

I adore the Pointdexter Cafe. It's so nostalgic from the pictures and the old skool chairs and tables. The coolest thing was all the pencils that decorated the counter. They have delicious breakfast sandwiches and pastries. My favorite is the sausage, egg and caramelized onions on a brioche bun. The service was awesome and the ambiance made me feel as if I was back in elementary school. When I stayed at the Graduate Hilton Hotel. This is why I don't like upfront tipping. I have never believed in it and this is the exact reason why. I ordered one coffee. And did not tip when paying upfront. There were only about one other customer who got their drink before me, and while I was waiting, they were chitchatting then some ladies came up and they started already pulling their drinks out yet mine was nowhere to be found. I had to remind them about my Americano and they said oh we forgot sorry coincidence I think not they purposely did that just because I didn't tip. Last I checked tip was voluntary and it was after the service is provided and determined upon what kind of service you get this is one of those places that forces you to tip regardless do not go here unless you want to get robbed! This small unique cafe is located in the lobby of the Graduate Hotel. It's very on brand with the "graduate school" theme. Plenty of places to sit. Coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches are on the menu. It is on the pricier side for breakfast. Service is average, but they do get the food and drinks out in a decent time. This cafe is well integrated with a hotel and has a similar theme making it seem like a very smooth transition from one part of the building to another. The coffee is great and there is food/music to go with it. I went when it was pretty empty, but the tables were pretty dirty. I remember walking past most of the tables to find one that wasn't covered in stains or food crumbs. While there are a lot of tables, this environment made me think this cafe was more of a to-go location where you pick up your coffee and leave the store immediately. Let me start by saying: the coffee was actually pretty decent. Which is unfortunate, because it means I might've considered coming back--if the staff hadn't been actively trying to ruin everyone's day like it was part of a new customer service training module called "How to Lose Friends and Alienate Everyone." The girl at the register? Wow. Just wow. I've seen more warmth from a vending machine. She greeted us with the kind of scowl usually reserved for sworn enemies and slow walkers. Every word she said came wrapped in contempt, like we were inconveniencing her by existing. Not just disinterested--hostile. Watching her interact with customers was like watching a reverse makeover montage: people came in smiling, and within 30 seconds, they looked like they'd aged five years and lost the will to live. We sat for a bit, mostly because we were stunned. And it was like watching a soap opera unfold in real time. One poor guy asked about milk options--nothing fancy--and she hit him with a stare that could curdle almond milk. Another customer politely mentioned their order was wrong, and the barista (not to be outdone) rolled his eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck. Apparently forgetting vanilla in a drink is fine, but pointing it out is the real crime. It was genuinely impressive how consistent the bad vibes were. Every single customer who approached the counter had a visible emotional arc: hope confusion defeat. Like watching joy slowly leave someone's body. To recap: Coffee = good. Had an awful experience here today. They lost our order, and when we asked about it after seeing several people behind us in line come and go with their orders, they gestured to a random coffee on the bar that was not what either of us ordered. When we said it was not what we ordered, one staff member reprinted our order while another took the small iced coffee that had been sitting on the bar since before we arrived, dumped it into a large cup, added ice, and gave it to me. When we confirmed what was in the cup that had been sitting out due to a severe food allergy, we were given a snarky reply that the drinks would "never even be close" to containing my allergen, despite the presence of the allergen throughout the cafe. We left with our drinks after 20 minutes waiting in the cafe, and they were disgusting. Will not be returning. read more

They have ample of seating and a reading nook with a view of the Biltmore park. They're a great value cafe as the prices are reasonable and a good portion. Coffee dorks unite! Poindexter Coffee is the cutest new java nook in town, tucked neatly in the Graduate Hotel right off of the art deco lobby that will make any Goth kid feel at home! We were in town for Necronomicon, the HP Lovecraft festival, and the Graduate serves as a "home base" for all us horror nerds to gather for seminars, workshops, and socializing. Of course, all this geeking out has to be fueled by something, and what better than Poindexter's nitro cold brew and berry iced tea that I've been living on for the past two days?! The cafe itself is super cute, and modeled with the hotel's "academia-meets-Addams Family" vibe in mind. What exactly does that mean? Well, for starters, the entire coffee counter is decoupaged with hundreds of actual pencils, and there's an enormous fireplace surrounded by old and magical looking books and knickknacks taking over a whole section of the shop. It's pretty much if my brain was a coffeehouse. We really dug it, and everyone from Necronomicon looked like they were at home in the spooky surroundings. As for the culinary offerings, it's your usual coffeeshop fare, priced accordingly to the swankiness of the hotel (this place is literally a parable of the class dork who grew up to be rich and famous), but I really did enjoy the smooth nitro coffee and the flavorful berry tea. My boyfriend also enjoyed a whoopee pie dessert, and if we arise early enough, I might even catch the "worm" - a PVDonut batch brought in fresh daily from the bakery down the street. Yum! They also do All You Can Eat Cereal! How fun is that? I'm glad we decided to check this place out! All us Necronomicon weirdos have been digging Poindexter all weekend, and I look forward to returning even after the festivities have ended! read more

We visited this morning before we checked out of the graduate hotel- seemed convenient as the entrance was just off the hotel lobby. I arrived before 9am and the line was 15 deep- took half an hour to place my order. An hour later and 5 requests- finally had one of two breakfast sandwiches- I never bothered to ask for the other I just couldn't deal with it anymore. This is not the fault of the two employees working there- clearly understaffed they were completely overwhelmed. The line never dies down- an hour after I placed my order it still stretched to the hotel lobby. The employee that helped me was really sweet and he was obviously exhausted. Go anywhere in providence but here. If you are staying at the hotel get your free coffee- and get out. For $25 would have been the same to DoorDash something and a lot less aggravating read more

Located in the former Biltmore (now The Graduate), this used to be a Starbucks. They improved the space, and it's a large and inviting coffee shop, with a friendly staff. So why a three star rating? My skim latte was really bitter, and even two sugars were insufficient to mitigate the taste. And a coffee shop that doesn't make good coffee, won't be a destination for me, regardless of ambiance. read more

Coffee was quite good, breakfast sandwich was excellent, the decor is nice and mostly hip/old school school decor with stacked pencils forming the base of the order counter & an antique card catalog in the back. But: it's very very dark inside and the original hotel ceiling doesn't work with the rest of the space concept. And - it was crazy humid outside and the air conditioner wasn't working right, if at all (there were fans near the registers). The bathroom we were sent to is through the hotel, upstairs & hard to find (no one gave us the code for the one inside the coffee shop when we asked for a restroom). The serving line took forever to move, and the sandwich came 20 minutes after we ordered/paid so it's a good thing we weren't trying to catch a bus. Maybe it was just growing pains since they're still pretty new... Let's hope so! I'll circle back in a month or so. read more

HORRIBLE- DO NOT GO HERE. We were guests at the graduate and they gave us two tokens for coffee in the morning. We come in to get coffee and they say the token I have will only cover a medium. She already has the coffee in a large cup ok... so I suggest I give her two tokens for the one large coffee. She proceeds to tell me that is against hotel policy that we have to go serve ourselves and that we have to use the self-service table. So essentially she's going to waste that cup and coffee over absolute nonsense. So at this point I'm getting frustrated and I just propose paying out right for both coffees just to not have to deal with it. We ask for two coffees with cream and sugar. She gives us the cups and tells us the cream and sugar is self serve at the table across from where you order. So we pay $8 for two coffees and we go over to the cream and sugar bar to find four carafes labeled : soy, milk, almond milk, skim NO CREAM. I nicely ask where the cream is and they tell me "we are out" Seriously. So I just paid $8 for two coffees, specifically asking for cream when I ordered and no one thought to mention the COFFEE SHOP is out of cream? No refund offered. My niece and I tried to put milk in my coffee but It was so awful we threw them out along with the $8 we paid for them. Go somewhere else for coffee- this place really soured my otherwise great experience at the graduate. read more

Formally a Starbucks in the former Biltmore, Poindexter feels like you are walking into a professor's library at a local university. It's variety of wallpapers, misplaced books around a fireplace and oversized cushioned feeling plays well with the Graduate Hotel's theme. As always, my go-to was the iced mocha. A large was $5, but I was able to justify it with this spot's ambiance and customer service. The chocolate was rich, not bitter and had a smooth taste. The menu was pretty standard with simple options for hot and iced beverages. The sandwiches sounded great- I look forward to trying one soon. read more

Many friends told me about this place so I had to check it out since I was going to be in Providence. The service was ok. The place is really cute with the pencil wall and the books. The sandwich was good, but for some reason tasted like it had mayonnaise in it. It was a little odd, but it was really big and beautiful. The timing on it was quick. I was a little surprised that they rely on the hotel next door for WiFi and said it was weak so I ended up eating my sandwich and then driving over to Starbucks for the WiFi I needed for my e-mail and work. My three friends and I found ourselves with Two hours to kill when our train to NYC was cancelled. We bought tickets on the Peter Pan bus departing from downtown providence two hours later. We found Poindexters as we headed toward the transit center. We were greeted warmly and were able to dump our bags and find a seat. Poindexters offers counter service so we ordered. The food was brought to our table. It was excellent! Fresh egg sandwiches, excellent coffee and a friendly staff. In fact, if it weren't for the staff, we would have missed our bus. I had assumed we would have been picked up at the transit center, cuz you know, TRANSIT! But, the Barrista told us where Peter Pan actually does pick up passengers. We found our way there easily, thanks to his detailed directions. If I find myself in downtown Providence again, I will definitely head to Poindexters! read more

Great service and delicious coffee. Maybe it's because I'm from out of town where people rarely smile at each other, but I was so cheered by the baristas at Poindexter and their friendliness. My kid loved the half wall of pencils and the pencil sharpener. The latte was delicious and his hot chocolate was the perfect temp - not too hot, as requested. Went there on a Saturday @ around 8:30am. They had no eggs. They seemed very overwhelmed as if this was their first opening day. Asked for a pastry and the guy picked it up with with a small tissue and no gloves ... there was a box of gloves right next to him. Service was pretty poor. read more

I decided to check out this spot today for the 1st time while walking around downtown providence with a friend of mine who is also big into all things coffee. Walked inside and was greeted by the barista, decor seemed pretty cool, and the place seemed well set up. I inquire about ordering an iced mocha was told that they shut off the espresso machines at 7pm because they take a long time to clean?!? ( It was 7:05pm) So a coffee shop doesn't make any drinks with espresso after 7pm due to cleaning?? Not quite the response any customer should receive when in a coffee shop that still had an hour remaining before its closing time. I was very confused with her response and baffled at the same time as I've never been told something like this before in ANY of the multiple other well known coffee shops in Providence. Management may want to re-visit this "rule" as it honestly makes no sense. Nonetheless I left without ordering anything and I'm not sure if I'm going to give it a 2nd chance. I'll have to come back when the machines are on, so maybe sometime during the morning hours. read more
