Ok so it the first day of work of 2018. Did I go to a wing joint or 5 guys? Heck no, I made a resolution and I'm sticking to it for the next three days. I decided to go to a place where they make good, healthy, fresh, food and then I have them squirt spicy mayo all over it to make sure I keep my girth. Not much different than most of the poke restaurants in town. I do like the option of doing 50/50 rice and greens. The service was fine but nothing to write home about. Of course service would have to be pretty amazing if I was going to write home about it. That would be one boring letter. I got the medium bowl with 3 proteins (spicy tuna, tuna, octopus). The octopus may not be your thing, but I like the texture and it makes me feel more exotic. I got the extra spicy mayo and it was pretty durn hot. My mouth was burning for awhile after I was finished. I mention this because I like spicy and it's unusual to have something that has good heat. After trying many of the North Atlanta poke restaurants, I was quite excited about trying Poke Fresh. What a disappointment!! I ordered a medium bowl with 50/50 salad and rice, with the proteins being salmon and tuna. I guess I didn't know that they meant the bowl itself would be 50% rice. I've never seen such small portions of fish in a poke bowl - maybe it's just this one guy who was working behind the bar and has an issue with stinginess. The tuna had a slightly rancid taste - maybe it's because this is Monday, and they haven't received their fresh fish for the week. To the positive, the place is clean, and I admire their courage for placing a nouveau cuisine restaurant in a suburb. I am a fan! Not too different from the successful chain Poke Bar that's popping up all over Atlanta, but each has great things to offer! FOOD: 5 The biggest difference I noticed between Poke Fresh and Poke Bar, to my liking, is that their protein are cut in big chunky squares (heart eyes!) The prices are about the same, but I felt like Poke Fresh offered bigger servings. The ingredients were super fresh as the name suggests, and the flavoring was well balanced. SETTING: 5 Simple Chipotle-style ordering system where you go through the line telling them what to add to your bowl. Easy and quick, no hassle! The interior is clean and spacious, you'll definitely find a seat most of the time. SERVICE: 5 All the staff were very friendly and accommodated all of our needs. Gotten food from here 3 times now. The first two times my poke bowl was perfect, beautiful to look at and delicious! This last time though my mom got me a bowl on her way over to my house with the exact ingredients I always get at any poke spot I go to. Whoever was making the bowls mixed the spicy tuna in with the rest of the ingredients/toppings/sauce instead of it being a scoop on the side(never had this happen anywhere when getting poke bowls before). Honestly spicy tuna being mixed in like that with everything made the bowl completely inedible between appearance, texture and screwed up the flavors. Overview: As a lover of anything raw fish related, I was super hyped to hear that a Poke place was opening right near my house! The overall meal definitely is kind to the taste buds, but not as much on the stomach. For around ~$12 for a medium sized bowl, I would hope to be pretty full, but I was left on the border of hungry. I think a little more rice (which is super cheap) would help alleviate this a bit. Additionally, I've only gone around dinner (when I'm the only customer) and the service is a little slow and awkward. Having to repeat which ingredients I want in a Chipotle-style counter is not something I'm excited to do. With that being said, I think they have a super great start and can definitely get a better review from me with a few tweaks. Food: What it lacks in quantity, Poke Fresh definitely makes up for in terms of quality. The protein selection is pretty diverse and super tasty (and of course fresh). There's a lot of different toppings and sauces to add to really customize your bowl (or Pokerettio). The seasoning bar at the end really completes the whole experience. Again, I think slightly more rice (or food overall) would help alleviate the portion size issues. Service: The employees are super nice! I went when they just opened so it's fair that some of the employees weren't very familiar with the menu yet, but I definitely expect this to change. I think the process for adding toppings needs to go a little faster with more yes/no options and less listing of toppings (which the employee ended up forgetting). Again, these are more-so process issues than anything since the employees are super kind. Environment: The environment really does shine, figuratively and literally. For a place handling raw fish, you want it to be clean and it definitely meets that standard. I'm so glad that there's a poke place that's close to work. I probably eat here at every week. They have choices of bowl, salad and sushi burrito. I've only tried the poke bowl. I got the medium which had 3 scoops of protein. I chose tuna, shrimp and crab meat. They have other protein choices like salmon, tofu, chicken and squid. They have a variety of sauces. I was introduced to this place using a coupon. The food portion is reasonable and taste was okay. But my overall experience is pathetic. 1..I had asked for a lid to take unconsumed food out. I was told that they would not give a lid, as the coupon stated one has to eat inside! Ironically, packing uneaten food is customary, which the merchant appears to be unaware of! 2.Additionally, I never carry cash. So when I was going to pay the tax of $1.47 with my card, the employee stated they have a $7minimum, which I was unaware as neither was it stated in the coupon nor at the entrance to the place. They don't accept Apple Pay either! To avoid embarrassment, my daughter went out in the rain and got her wallet! 3.The merchant would not give a receipt either, though the total transaction was $21.47, since we only paid cash of $1.47. 4.When I had mentioned politely that customer service was key for success of a business , and that if they did not take care of customers, they would loose them, the employee (a young Lady of Asian/Vietnamese origin) said "I DONT CARE". She also added that even if I shared a negative review, it will not affect them, as I had mentioned an unhappy public review. What a pathetic staff and attitude! 5. When I asked for her name, she refused. And when I asked for a manager, she said the manager was out. When I asked for the owner details and display of business license, she mentioned they did not need to share that. Sounds like a place the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) needs to audit for not giving receipts and not accepting cards below $7. And the Food Safety bureau needs to look into for not displaying the business license, or showing when asked! In any case, despite the affordable price of $10-$14/bowl, I will avoid as there are plenty of good establishments around and near this merchant, and in Alpharetta. I think about a golf ball size but remember its a scooper so it about half of a 3D circle (Had to google this forgot it was called a sphere.). So about half a sphere of a golf ball. What can I say, yet another Poke restaurant pops up and yep, it's great! Visited this place with my kids and they loved it. Great selection of proteins. I especially liked that the imitation crab - Kani was also offered. Most place don't include it in the base selection. The fish in this place is kept at the perfect temp which makes their poke pop! The condiment selection was top notch as well. I can only say that the didn't have an oil based ginger dressing like other poke bars. So only minus for me. I attempted to have lunch here today and patiently waited for about 7 minutes without as much of a spoken word, nod, or anything. There were two people working, one was assisting a couple of ladies in front of me and the other appeared to be working on 'to go' orders. I've been to a few other poke restaurants in our area as they're popping up everywhere. The portions at Poke Fresh were smaller than other businesses and the sauces were not as flavorful. (I tend to try to get the same meal in different locations so that I'm comparing apples to apples.) This place has super healthy food. You pick the size you want and kind of meat then top off with a solid selection of veggies. I think the best part is the selection of sauces they offer which are unique and delicious. You can have them put a bunch in your meal and also ask for some on the side. I have only had one item from here so far, but I will definitely be going back. I work close by, so I ordered for pick up hoping I would be in and out. To my surprise, my food was waiting for me already (this was unexpected since I was a few minutes early)! I had an amazing pokeritto that I customized myself, and it was incredible. The fish tasted as if it had just come out of the sea. The add ons (most of which were free) gave my meal variety and flavor. The meal was fairly affordable since good sushi is usually expensive, but incredibly filling! I've been looking for a good place to get a poke (or sushi) burrito for a while, and this takes the cake! Talk about a diamond in the rough in a sea of chain restaurants on Windward. I was so happy to see a poke restaurant in the area. The ambiance is nice and it has a "chain" or franchise type of feel inside. I wouldn't be surprised if we see locations popping up across the metro area. The fish is very fresh as are the rest of the ingredients. I like all the choices of toppings and sauces. The portion size was great for a medium. Three scoops of protein. I highly recommend the salmon and tuna.....topped off with the super spicy mayo. For $10 or less with all the fresh ingredients you can't beat the value. read more
