Being born and raised in Hawaii, I am always on the lookout for poke places that can satisfy my cravings. This is my motto: "NOM NOM NOM poke all day err day." So eloquent, right? Yeah, we got some pretty good options on the island. However, we don't have any that serve their bowls in the same Chipotle-esq style like Poke Salad Bar! Say whaaaat?!? So many choices, such as: -2,3 ($10.50), or 4 scoops of fish -white or brown rice vs. salad -type of fish-- I chose ahi tuna, spicy tuna, and salmon for my 3 scoops. -toppings: for me, masago (fish eggs), imitation crab, seaweed, edamame, furikake, garlic chips, cucumbers, and more! Extra imitation crab is $0.50. -sauce: yuzu ponzu for meeeee They have a lot of fish options! Other than what I ordered, they also have yellowtail, scallops, octopus, and albacore tuna. The only critiques I would have are that the ahi tuna was a bit too fishy aka did not have that fresh taste. Additionally, they did not mix my fish with enough of the ponzu sauce. I should've asked for more, but since I didn't know I just had to use some shoyu to mask the more fishier tasting pieces of ahi. The spicy tuna was like the mushed up kind of texture that they can just scoop with an ice cream scooper. Prices are competitive with other poke places on the mainland. A few months ago, I was talking to my family about how the concept of customizable poke bowls was trending.. Lo and behold, THREE poke places opened in Pasadena in just a matter of months and they're all so close to one another! I decided to (finally) check one out so I stopped by PSB around 9pm this past Wednesday. It was pretty packed and the line kept on going, which is amazing considering how they're still doing their soft opening. My sister and I shared a large bowl (4 scoops), topped with crab meat / corn / etc, and used both the ponzu + sesame sauces. AMAZING!! There aren't too many options, which I like because sometimes you accidentally mix things that don't go well together. The fish was fresh, cut into thick pieces, and generously served. Everything just worked. After checking in, you get $2 off which I used to tip the cashier anyways. Total was $12 for a filling, tasty bowl. SO worth it when you consider how much you pay for the same amount of food at a sushi restaurant. The only that sucks is parking but there are several 90 minute free structures around the area. This has to be my favorite poke place in Pasadena! It's super fresh and they don't skimp on the fish! And unlike Spinfish Poke House, they have a good amount of tables INDOORS. :) What I Ordered - Medium (3 scoops of fish) Salad with Salmon and Yellowtail with Yuzu Ponzu and Wasabi Mayo Man was it spicy!! The concept is just like any other poke places you get to pick your base, fish, sauce and add ons with the ingredients displayed for view on the counters. PSB has eight kinds of fish to choose from (spicy tuna, ahi tuna, salmon, scallop, octopus, shrimp, yellowtail and albacore) and four different sauces (chipotle mayo, wasabi mayo, sesame shoyu and yuzu ponzu). I liked the variety of fish and the lack of sauces to choose from wasn't bad because I usually get chipotle mayo anyways. Definitely interested in trying the other sauces though! I love poke and was ecstatic to find that they opened not only one, but two poke spots in Pasadena! Between Spinfish and Poke Salad Bowl, we chose this one because it was slightly cheaper and more air conditioned because it was such a hot day. The process was quick going down the line choosing your base, toppings, fish, and sauces. I got the small bowl and it filled me up (~$9). The sauce was very plain though as I would expect more for a spicy mayo sauce. Otherwise, it was yummy and fish was fresh. If I was really starving, I'd upgrade to the medium or large for only a dollar or two more. Some improvements I would hope for was how the rice was a little harder than I would've liked it. Pick your base (rice, salad, chips...), then pick your extras (crabmeat, pineapple, jalapeño...), then your "nemo" ( yellowtail, octopus, tuna...), then your sauce (ponzi, wasabi mayo..), lastly your toppings (fried onion, edamame, ginger... ). Portions are very generous, fish is fresh and layout is smooth. Can't decide on which extra or topping you want? You can get it all, no extra charge! CAN I START OFF BY SAYING THEIR PORTIONS ARE SO SPOT ON!! The salmon chunks are humongous and I hope they keep their portions the same! Also, they cut their avocados fresh right in front of you ($1 extra) and I felt that was wonderful because at other locations, their avocados are already scooped out in a container and most of the time they're brown. One thing I did notice when I went, they directed my friend and I to fill out the paper. But when anther party after us comes in, they were able to cut us and not have to fill the paper like us. Located next to Cheesecake Factory, just park in one of the free municipal lots for 90min. I like that this place has the biggest selection of fish, sauces, and toppings. Possibly one of the freshest and flavorful poke bowls I have tried to date (PokiNometry in Anaheim, Simply Bowl in Berkeley, and Pacific Catch - a chain in the bay area). I ordered a large bowl (a light meal for two once paired with free soup at $12) with four scoops of fish (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and spicy tuna), white rice, crab meat, seaweed, sauce w/ half yuzu ponzu/half sesame shoyu, spicy, and all the toppings. There doesn't seem to be limitations on the sides except for avocado which is a dollar extra. Check in for a free bowl of miso soup. I love how the fish (salmon, tuna, yellowtail) comes in large 1in x 1in chunks and are seasoned just before serving. Normally I'd be wary with such large pieces of fish but it was easy to chew with very clean flavors. One of the employees had suggested mixing the yuzu and sesame sauces which was a great call since the citrus added acidity without being overwhelming. I've been frequenting here lately for lunch because it's so close to work and it always hits the spot. This place is like a poke version of chipotle. The base cost starts at the number of fish you want (ie: small is 2 types of fish, medium is 3 types, etc.). Then you can def rack up the $ by getting different add-ons such as crab meat and seaweed salad. You can also get half & half brown rice and salad which is always my go-to.
