This place is a bit hidden in an alleyway, but I love poké so when this popped up on my Yelp search I knew I wanted to try it. Fair warning, they do not have white rice available. It's only purple or brown rice, which is a healthier option, but I understand it's not for everyone. I got the regular size poké bowl with purple rice, and it's cooked perfectly that it has a fluffy texture very similar to white rice's. What I really liked about this place is that they mix your sauces with the protein in a separate mixing bowl before putting it into your poké bowl. Most poké places I've been too won't do this as an extra step - they'll just drizzle a bunch of sauce that sometimes the dry ingredients gets drenched and soggy. As for the fish itself, the portions are very fair, and the quality is good. They gave a pretty generous amount of avocado as well, which was very fresh, and you do not have to pay extra for it. This could've put me in the Emergency Room. Roll Factory has officially lost all of my trust. Good evening friends and family. This review is less of a review and more of a warning/notice. Unfortunately, this isn't a pleasant write up but it's nevertheless necessary. My wife if and I periodically visit this place when in the Pasadena area. We normally get the spam musubi but this time she decided to get the chirashi bowl ($30), the unagi bowl, edamame, and the musibi, all to-go. I'm skeptical about raw fish from a place like this and prefer an official location for sushi like "Fish King" in Glendale, Ca that offers sushi grade fish in addition to an abundance of fresh seafood. But, because my wife took a chance on it and was my only option to eat, I gave it a try. The unagi bowl was good, a bit sweet, but I'd safely give it a 6.5/10. The edamame was solid. The musubi was the same as usual, 7.5/10. The $30 Chirashi bowl unfortunately wasn't pleasant 5/10. As I sit here writing this review hoping that I'm ok to go into work tomorrow since I ate a quarter piece of raw salmon that smelled spoiled and threw the rest in the trash. Although that gave me a bad feeling, I didn't want to be rude so I moved on to the next piece of raw fish I believe was tuna. Upon chewing the tuna and rice, a sharp bone stabbed me in the side of my tounge. I fetched the sharp bone to discover it wasn't a bone. It's a sharp piece of steel that resembles an old stretched out staple. My tounge has a hole in it and stings a bit, my sinuses hold a pungent funk from the peace of salmon, and I'm still hungry. This place has completely lost all of my trust and I warn of negligence and the safety of anyone who decides to eat here. I typically enjoy leaving fun, adventurous, visual movie script like reviews because I'm not one of those yelps who run to only leave bad experiences but this called for the attention of the establishment to not only make them aware, but also to protect the customers. This experience could've gone horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone else so please be alert when eating out. I come here often during my lunch break because it's tasty, convenient, and quick. I oftentimes will get a salmon skin roll or a poke salad bowl, but my new favorite is a special request baked salmon bowl that the chef/owner will make for me. It's essentially the unagi bowl but with salmon instead. The salmon is cooked perfectly and served on a bed of purple rice (or mixed salad in my case) with some japanese radish/gobo, and a piping hot bowl of udon broth. The average price you may spend for an individual person ranges from $25-$30 for two-three items. I primarily order take-out and it would be more convenient to do the same (for the sake of parking). From the Door Dash app, it took 15-20 minutes to order and prepare the delivery. When I talk about service, I really mean the quick turnaround time between ordering and delivery, without messing up the order. This places is more than the average price of a usual poke bowl (does include two options for protein). What does make them unique is their option for purple rice which is embedded in majority of their menu items (e.g. sushi and Musubi). Some featured items to try include: Poke Bowl (choose regular or large), chirashi bowl, and a few common sushi rolls). From what I ordered, if you get the poke bowl, there was a larger ratio of rice to toppings which made it feel dry even when I mixed my bowl. However, it could be based on my choice of sauce (Yuzu Miso - gluten free). My bowl included: furikake, dried seaweed, sweet corn, green onion, cilantro, cucumber, salmon, ahi tuna, seaweed salad, tamago, purple rice (would try getting the purple rice!). 2/3 of the spam musubi options held together well with the ingredients. It was still soft, flavorful, and blended well. I wouldn't bother with ordering the Spam Avocado Musubi. The sauce and spam overpower the taste of avocado. It's another ingredient but doesn't add too much in taste or value to the appetizer. I've only had their menu items from delivery but again, the quality seems to stay consistent. I came in with a couple family members to grab some bowls. We had eaten there before, and found the prices had risen several dollars. Okay, maybe it's still worth it, we enjoyed eating here before and want to support the biz. The owner was the only one there (no other customers than just us, no other workers). I asked for the yellowtail, he said it wasn't ready yet so I said alright, we'll wait. He then said (I kid you not) "can't you just order something else?" I said again, maybe thinking he's not having a great day. "No, we would like the yellowtail please, we will wait." He got out the fish and then looked at me and said "why can't you order something else?" or something along those lines. Such a bad attitude, didn't even speak nicely AT ALL, or even look me in the face. It was already rude he spoke to me like that in the first place, this nailed the coffin shut. He eventually, begrudgingly made us our bowls, but for the price it was mostly rice with some fish, and toppings. I guess you pay for the fact the rice is purple, because they're def not generous with the fish. Roll me up in a sushi roll and take me home because Roll Factory by Straycat Kitchen always takes care of my poke cravings. My boyfriend has taken me here twice and it just might become a regular sushi spot of ours soon. He's been here probably 10+ times before me though! I've gotten to build-my-own poke bowl and try the Chirashi Bowl here. Both of these were great and were served in such big portions. Both times, I got full after eating half and was able to save the other half for another meal. The regular build-your-own poke bowl comes with 2 sides and 2 proteins but you could go crazy with the toppings if you'd like. I mean, you can go nuts with the toppings! I usually ask for most of the toppings. I'm a salmon gal and I always get double scoop of salmon and when they say "2 scoops" they are much more generous with the scoops than what is advertised. The staff here are always so friendly, too. Everything in the Chirashi Bowl was made perfectly. From the generous sashimi pieces to the rice, I had such a fun time eating it and enjoyed the variety of toppings. I think Chirashi translates to "scattered sushi" which doesn't sound as pretty as it looks but it quickly became my favorite menu item because I get to try a little bit of everything! The sashimi isn't even the best part here because the rice is where it's really at. The rice has a slight sweetness to it and of course, the signature sushi rice texture. The sashimi has a tender, melt-in-your-mouth, smooth, silky texture, as it should! You can tell the chefs here do a great job. It's always fresh and you can taste it. I don't even feel guilty at all eating this because fish and rice are a complete meal full of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Needless to say, give Roll Factory by Straycat Kitchen a try! I was craving poke so time to use the Grubhub membership I have through Amazon. Stumbled upon this place and the reviews were good so I gave it a shot. I went with a regular salmon and yellowtail poke bowl with purple rice. All of the other ingredients are included in one of the pix. I found this bowl size to be quite a generous portion for one person. The fish pieces were small, however, and I've had bowls from other places with more fish. Also to note, some of the salmon had skin on it but it was easily removable. Everything tasted fresh and you're provided with various choices of ingredients to add to your bowl. My only complaint was that the sauce could not be tasted except on the rice. Had a bowl of Shrimp tempura udon and spam musubi with avocado and both were very good. The udon had a good flavor and came with a lot of toppings. The musubi was cooked just right, good flavor and avocado. Didn't have to wait long and was nicely packed so that we could eat it on the plaza. Perfect for what we were looking for. Had a lazy Thursday that didn't inspire me to cook and so I opted for delivery instead (rip my wallet). This place is on the pricier end, but the portion was pretty big so I'm not too bothered. I'm no poke connoisseur, but I get it relatively often. Thought the fish tasted fresh and appreciated all the options in terms of fish and based and add-ons. The half salad, half purple rice base couple with two scoops of protein was super filling. I was full halfway through such makes me want to share this the next time I get a poke bowl here. The spicy tuna-spicy salmon combo gave the bowl a kick. The amount of fish you get is pretty on par with most poke places that are cheaper, but I liked the overall quality here and how generous they are with your sides make up for it. Poke is nutrient dense, but not calorie light (with all the sauce going into it hahah) so definitely a treat for myself and glad I tried this spot. Wonderful little shop that sells poke and musubis! Personally I don't eat poke a lot but I come here frequently for their musubis. What makes this spot more unique than other locations is that they make the rice using purple rice! It's a nice little Korean twist to a dish that I really enjoy. My personal favorite is the ol-pa mu 3 (Spam + krab + baked eel). The purple rice gives the musubi a new texture that I wouldn't find at your traditional musubi / poke shop. The people who work here are really friendly and I've never had a problem with the service here. The interior isn't too big so I would recommend taking your food to-go if you're a large party. You've reached a point of hunger that you know you WANT to eat, NEED to consume, and HAVE to just get yourself outside onto the streets for some form of TRUE sustenance. BUT here I was for the last few hours (like always) wondering just what and where it would be. (Sure I could cook something phenomenal BUT I'm back in LA and have no reason to.) I have that stupid problem that some here may already share. We scroll endlessly through Yelp, forums, blogs, bucket lists and find ourselves looking at everything "amazing" but still unenticing enough to stay frozen in whatever place we've parked ourselves. Hunger growing, momentum slowing...a bad omen. Roll Factory actually showed up on my Yelp search FAR FAR FAR down the list (200+) and really caught my attention. As Pasadena is one of those cities that I've personally felt was overcrowded in the raw fish scene, I've generally avoided it altogether whenever in the area. Why? As good as it is, I've found it pretentious in so many levels and with as many visits to Japan as I've had...well, I just can't be bothered in the moment to partake in it. So what about Roll Factory brought me in? Easy. Purple "healthy" Korean rice on a Spam Musubi. That was all it took to get me curious enough to walk a mile straight to them this particular evening. Something different from the usual BS (no matter how good) is what foodies like me actually appreciate. To dare and to be different and add/change to traditional methods is totally special. And that I found here in this particular moment. As people next door dined on Americanized sushi rolls that make my eyes roll out of the sockets, I sat here alone having a really unique spam musubi with Korean "healthy" rice with avocado and egg. Gosh, talk about replicating this at home from now on considering how easy it is for me. But when I bit into the "burrito" and found that it just melted away in my mouth, I knew I found a gem. It was a ridiculous texture of pure melt away of basic flavors. The WTF did I just eat kind of thing. Same flavors but a different bite and texture that changed the eating game. Idk. I can't particularly place my finger on the culinary map with this place. But it's different and it's fun and it's definitely superior to the pretentious BS churning out non-thoughtful rolls that seem to dominate the food scene nowadays. Seriously. I really enjoyed my avocado roll, it was really fresh and the purple rice was so delicious! For the poke bowl, the ingredients individually were delicious but I think I just didn't love the combination. I definitely would want to come here again and try a different combination. I've been here a couple of times and I loooooove it, specifically for the spam musubi. They have so many options and different combinations for musubi. My favorite is the spam musubi with shrimp tempura. It comes with crab salad, a tasty mayo spread, and purple rice. It has such a nice crunch and flavor. I also sometimes get the egg spam musubi. This one is also very flavorful and the egg is very satisfying to eat. My most recent visit I got a side of the shrimp tempura which was delicious and perfectly crunchy and delicate. I liked how you were able to sub different kinds of rice and salad for the base. The regular can work as two meals depending on how hungry you are. The left overs were still good the next day. Definitely going back to try other stuff on the menu and to get the poke bowl again. So worth it and for the price I thought it was affordable because you get so much food.
