Honestly its been a while since I have eaten poke. This was an excellent choice for a return back to it. It is easy to see from the street but the entrance to park is from behind and you can use the Longhorn Steak entrance to get to the front. Once inside it is a nonsense restaurant, poke bar on the left and seating on the right. If you have had poke it is the same concept as a Subway sandwich place. You pick the base of the bowl (rice, salad...mixed), move onto the other we other choices of what tops it, like onions, cucumber, carrots or more specific but some cost extra. Then protein for me I got spicy salmon and then topped with a tasty sauce. In a few minutes you are finished and sitting to eat this delicious bowl that you designed. Good stuff for sure. read more

I first tried this spot a couple of years ago when I moved here, and recently my husband ordered it again on Uber Eats--it was so good I had to come back in person. Everything today was super fresh. I went with a mix of tuna, spicy tuna, and marinated tuna with gochujang, and every bite was on point. The rice was perfectly sticky, the toppings were crisp, and you can really tell the ingredients are high quality. I did a half-and-half base and added extra protein, and honestly, for about $20 with tip, it felt like a great deal. I used to pay closer to $30 for something similar back in Nashville, so this is definitely a win. Safe to say this is going into my regular rotation. read more

I am not a regular at Poke Star but I might need to be after this visit. Honestly, I don't like cold meals until the weather is warm. Today was in the upper 70's so Poke Star was the perfect choice. They have some signature bowls and my husband always gets the Volcano Bowl. I like to make my own combo of ingredients. Just fill out the order sheet provided with all the things you want and hand it to the worker who will build it. Today I chose a lettuce base, marinated tuna, some onions, carrots, cucumber, pineapple and then topped with wasabi sauce and sweet soy. For crunch I added tempura and wonton strips. The service there is always fast and friendly. They never take long to make each bowl so if you're in a hurry this is a great place to stop that's going to faster than any drive thru in town. I was eating in today so I chose one of the high tables. My husband was joining me with his Volcano Bowl, and we also got a fountain drink. I'm not sure what type of lettuce mix they use but it was the freshest and crunchiest I've ever had. I get salads at other build your own type places, but they are never this cold and crisp. Highly recommend getting it here if you are usually a rice base type person. Dining room is spotless as always. I can always find a clean table to sit and the beverage area is also kept spotless every time I've been in. I started ozempic, you guys! As a result, my food desire is seriously wonky. But I've been craving fresh and nourishing things (imagine) and so I came here to poke star for a nice lunch. I'm not the biggest fan of the BYO food bowl insanity, but every once in a while, I like a poke bowl, so I popped in here to try them out after reading a number of very positive reviews. The bowl madness started about 10 years ago with the arrival of the poke bowl from Hawaii, and the fad just grows and grows, and now seems like food bowls will be a permanent part of US culinary offerings. I filled out the BYO Poke order form, choosing Half and Half protein - Ahi Tuna and Shrimp. I chose a base of White Rice, then adding cucumber, edamame , carrots, sweet onion, green onion, jalapeños, and pineapple! My sauce choices were ponzu and sriracha aioli. I topped this mixture with crispy onion and tempura flakes. Cost was $13.50, service was quick and efficient. They did add a $1 adm charge, for using a CC, I assume! This was a very, very good meal. The Ahi was tasty, fresh and clean, if a bit mild. The shrimp followed that same course. The ingredients were excellent, especially the edamame, sweet onion, carrots, and the pineapple was a real star.The toppings of crispy onion and tempura played their roles well also. The sauces were tasty but lacked any real depth of flavor or spiciness. At home, I mixed a very good quality soy sauce with an equally good quality hot sauce, and l was very happy with the result. Even though the protein amounts were on the skimpy side as were the sauce amount for take out, this was a very nice bowl, one I will repeat in much the same form. First time at Poke Star today and I enjoyed my bowl. Its definitely a good option in Winston-Salem. I'm all about the sauces. I tried the Sriracha Aioli and the coconut ginger. Still a nice choice for a meal, I think. The process of ordering is still simple, whether one uses the checklist or verbally picks the items they'd like to see placed in their bowl. I feel like the amount of protein included in each bowl has shrunk, though I've learned to add tofu (at no cost) as a way of enriching the bulk of the meal. The beverage options remain limited. Only one of the restrooms is available to the public now, though one is probably enough as I never see many patrons in here at once. Today was my second visit to Poke Star for lunch. The fresh and flavorful food makes for a nice, filling lunch with good-quality ingredients and fish. The service is always prompt, which makes it easy to get in and out with a nutritious lunch. The ambiance is typical of a poke shop, with little to write home about. However, I do have two grievances that I've tried to overlook but are hard to ignore. First, when you walk in, you fill out the menu paper, which is an excellent idea. The problem is that what is on the ordering paper, what is on the wall menu, and the actual offerings differ quite a bit. So even if you fill out the paper, there may be something different offered or listed on the wall menu or even a different price, which makes it a bit confusing. For example, the wall menu doesn't state that you're limited to three toppings, but the paper menu does, making it difficult to determine which is law. My other issue is that the fish portion is super chintzy even when you pay $4 extra for an extra scoop of protein. She doesn't fill the serving spoon for either scoop of protein, which is probably 1/4 of a cup, even halfway, so your bowl is heavy on the toppings and base with a sprinkle of fish. As I said, the flavors are spot on, but I can't help but feel a bit cheated in the end, mainly because I ordered the same bowl twice, and it was $21 the first time and $19 the second time. The conflicting menus and prices, coupled with the small protein portions, make me feel like I'm being scammed, which isn't a sentiment any customer appreciates. As a result, I'd go in a pinch, but I will not frequent this place in the future, as it just doesn't seem worth it. read more

I was curious when I found a poke spot in Winston how authentic/fresh it would be given they advertise themselves as Hawaiian. First things first is the service. Although I was timid, I was kindly and brightly greeted by two workers who seem like could be the owners too! They could tell it was my first time there and guided me through their options and ingredients! I can tell there are lots of regulars there who come instantly and leave with their take out so I knew it had to be good. I got a "make your own" bowl with spicy salmon and an array of veggies and tofu for $16! The portion was huge in my opinion! You're definitely getting a good amount for your money. I do agree with the other reviews that I wish it came with a few more pieces of the raw fish since that's what makes a poke bowl but that's all. Flavor was there sauces were great, fish tasted fresh! The decor is very clean and well kept. I ate half of my bowl and was able to have the other half as a snack after lunch. Allow me to add more stars to the numerous Poke Star's already being accumulated, there is definitely a reason this place is a hit! Delicious fresh fish topped in a variety of ways to suit your tastes, including a variety of sauces to tweak things in whatever direction you want. An excellent place to go if you are craving something healthy in that sushi realm but maybe don't need the craftsmanship of a maki roll, or are maybe looking to save a little money. Another thing, to say they are going above and beyond to keep things clean and safe for COVID-19 is an understatement. The kitchen has been converted into a veritable containment grid, straight out of E.T. Which definitely cuts down on the comfort of the restaurant, but in these times, the health precautions are so appreciated. My bowl came with a nice portion of rice, greens, pineapple, crunch, and of course a mix of fresh fish. I was quite pleased. If I have one negative, it is the scant drink selection, including tea that is not fresh brewed. We did a build your own bowl, but they have several signature bowls to choose from. We couldn't decide on a sauce is we got their OG sauce and sriracha aioli on the side because we couldn't decide what we wanted. Sriracha aioli has a little kick, but not too spicy. For someone like me who loves sushi but new Ed's to cut down on the rice, this is perfect. You get your bowl with a base choice of brown or white rice or spring salad! Their are 6 bowls on the menu or you can great your own. You can get raw fish in them or get chicken and shrimp. It's so cute reading the reviews on here about Poke Star and people are just so amazed and thinking how clever a concept that Poke Star has - which yes it is brilliant, but literally a concept that every poke bowl place ever has. The Triad is truly so behind on the food culture, diversity, and fads. Anyways, what caught my eye coming in was the 100 rating on the inspection grade. This makes me feel safe, especially since raw fish is like a main part of this whole restaurant. Now, if you've been to a poke bowl restaurant - it is basically the same everywhere. And this place does not disappoint and meets the standards of poke bowl restaurants. Numerous toppings, good selection for the protein, and they even have mochi icecream. No complaints here. Aside from the birth of my child, Poke Star has been the best thing to happen in my life in the 10 years I've been in Winston-Salem. Sad? Yum!), and the seaweed salad, though sadly costs extra, has great flavor and crunch. The portion is quite generous, the service always friendly, and you can't beat Poke Star's 100 health inspection score! Sure, there are better poke bowls out there but those are a few hours' drive away. But if you're looking for a sushi-type meal that makes you feel good about your life choices, this is it. I do hope though that they'll switch to biodegradable bowls someday. I'm not embarrassed to admit I have been here 5 times in 1.5 weeks. OG sauce is a combination of soy sauce, honey ginger, and sesame oil but it mostly tastes like soy sauce. I got the sriracha aioli on the side and I added some toppings on top too. The fish is fresh and I like how this bowl comes with avocado and masago, which you normally would have to pay extra for. I do wish they gave more food and that they mix the sauce with the fish and other ingredients separately before putting it on the rice/salad, like they do at other poke places. My hubby built his own bowl and I ordered a Pacific Bowl, customized by adding crispy onions for savory crunch and ahi tuna with my salmon. DELISH. Not to mention, it was more affordable than I thought it'd be considering sashimi grade fish is usually pretty pricy. Each of our bowls came out to around $15 each and we were satisfied with our portion sizes. Pick-up was also safe. They require and wear masks, limit how many people can be inside the establishment at once (I don't think they're allowing dine-in right now) and have screen protectors all around their food/pick-up station so you couldn't breathe on anything, even if you tried.
