I never thought I would find another poke place in the 757 that I would enjoy but here we are (757 Poke in Pembroke mall is still my go to place for poke). I came here for lunch during work one day and I built my own poke bowl. I got the sushi rice with 3 scoops of salmon and topped it off with crab salad, green onion, masago, seaweed salad, pineapple, and their classic poke sauce (sweet and savory). The rice was okay, wished it was a touch more seasoned but the salmon was fresh and tasty and all my toppings worked well together. The bowl was huge and definitely very filling. They have other protein here too such as: shrimp, tuna, hamachi, etc. What's cool about this place is that they also make Boba drinks as well and my co workers love coming here for them. The employee making my bowl was friendly and was generous with the toppings. I paid almost $14 for a bowl which is a little high but considering I got a quality bowl, it was worth it. Husband ordered out on a Monday when I was grumpy and "needed" sushi (needed might be a strong word, but hey! it's how I felt!). Our go-to spot is closed on Monday, so he came across Pokey. Wow! I was impressed!! He got a poke bowl that was fresh and delicious and I got what I think they call a "pokey wrap", but what I identify as a sushi burrito (fellow misplaced San Diegans know). I was always skeptical about poke. I loved sushi and I didn't want to be open minded to any new methods or variations of sushi. I tried a "sushi bowl" once at Gustavo's Sushi at ODU's campus and it was nothing special; it confirmed that I preferred traditional sushi. Then I gave poke another try in Lynchburg at some restaurant. The poke was dissatisfactory, it had a ton of soy garlic. Again, this confirmed I liked traditional sushi. I had seen poke bowls from Pokey on my friend's snapchat stories multiple times and though it seemed good my experience with poke had been negative. I asked my friend about her pokey bowl and she said Pokey was super good and she was addicted to their bowls. Out of the blue I decide to give Pokey's poke bowls a try. I went with my boyfriend who had also had the unsatisfying bowl in Lynchburg. At first I wanted to make sure I got all the right things because I didn't want to be disappointed. The gentleman who works there is great. He gave me his recommendations and was extremely patient. After we received our bowls and dug it, we were both very surprised at how good it was compared to our other experience. Since then I had been a frequent visiter at Pokey. I've moved away from that area and I think that the most difficult thing for me is leaving Pokey behind and searching for a new poke spot. 10/10 recommend this place; great service, great food, and great prices! read more

I've been here twice in the past week with friends and I'm in love with their chocolate milk tea! The bubbles were just right: not too sweet, not undercooked, good texture. The cups it comes in are cute and very sturdy. My boyfriend got the poke bowl and said they do give a good amount of everything and that it tastes good. I got the sushi burrito my second time there because I've always wanted to try one and there are not many places around here that make those. It tasted really good, besides the fact that there was a piece of plastic in it.. I don't know how, but a lot of customers did come in after us which may have caused them to rush as there were only two employees working.. Was in the mood for ramen so we walked in to check it out. The place is casual and they had high top tables and stools and had plenty of room for dining. While they do serve poke, we opted on pork katsu ramen for me & spicy ramen for my husband. The bowls were huge and the portions were generous. Please check this place out!! Delicious poke with heaping piles of toppings you can add on and bubble tea. Nothing can beat that. I am genuinely excited for this awesome addition to Downtown Norfolk. Now the food: the 2 options are poke or sushi burrito. Think of it as the choice between chipotle bowl vs burrito. You can't get as much toppings on the sushi burrito, but it was delicious and definitely filled me up. Poke has 3 bases: sushi rice, brown rice, or salad. I would recommend sushi rice. Variety of proteins to choose from (option of 2 or 3 proteins) salmon, ahi tuna, yellowtail, octopus, scallop, shrimp, etc. I thought the salmon and tuna were fresh. Then, the toppings! You can get as many toppings as you want (except avocado which is $1 extra) The crabmeat was part of the topping, not protein, so I piled them up on my bowl. The sauce was tricky but they let me sample it first. My favorite was the classic poke sauce, little bit sweet, little bit of salty, and soy-sauce based. I was surprised by how cheap it was. I'm thankful for this place because it gives me another option for Poke within walking distance of work other than Luk Fu at Waterside. The amount of variety in terms of protein, toppings, sauces, and crunch brings happiness to my customizable-loving stomach. I usually opt for a mix of salad and rice as my base which feels just right because it leaves me with a comfortable filled feeling. If you didn't know you can top your bowl with the same protein so double ahi tuna is bae for me. I think I scarf down my bowl faster than they make it. I imagine I look like an anime character furiously eating ramen after I sit down with my chopsticks. I have yet to try the sushi burrito though it's on my list. It seems like you get more bang for your buck with the bowl which is why I've yet to step out and get the burrito. read more

Pokey is a welcome addition to downtown Norfolk's dining scene, one that is catching the wave of the crescendoing popularity of Hawaiian style Poke bowls in our area. It opened about four weeks ago at the former site of Edible Arrangements on Granby Street. This is actually their second venture. Their first one is the Kagura Japanese Restaurant, which opened on Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake in 2012. As you enter, your eyes begin to soak up a beautiful, sleek, and modern interior, highlighted by a soft and soothing blue color scheme for their walls. Their offerings are well organized and colorfully displayed on the wall behind their counter. Creating your own Poke bowl is a six-step process. You begin by choosing a base of either white or sushi rice, followed by your choice of proteins. You can order two for $10.95 or three for $12.95. Finally, you choose your mix-ins, sauces, toppings, and crunches. During my three visits to date, I have enjoyed the following: LARGE POKE BOWL: Albacore Tuna, Hamachi (The Japanese name for Pacific Yellowtail), Octopus, Cucumber, Edamame, Mango, Honeydew, Crab Salad, Green Onion, Spicy Furikake, Seaweed Salad, Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, Shredded Nori, Spicy Ponzu, and Honey Wasabi over Sushi Rice. My bowl was bountiful and beautiful, most definitely the largest Poke bowl I have tried with enough for a second meal. It was so delicious that I couldn't stop devouring it. All of the ingredients came together to form a divine symphony of flavors. My Rating: 5 Stars. LARGE POKE BOWL WITH AVOCADO: Ahi Tuna, Salmon, Octopus, Avocado, Cucumber, Edamame, Jalapeno, Honeydew, Crab Salad, Green Onion, Spicy Furikake, Seaweed Salad, Pickled Ginger, Masago, Wasabi, Wasabi Tobiko, Shredded Nori, Honey Wasabi Sauce, and Spicy Ponzu over Sushi Rice. This was another bountiful bowl with enough for two meals. The avocado was a dollar extra. This one didn't sing to me with quite the same notes as the other one, but it was still flavorful. The Spicy Ponzu sauce seemed to be slightly off taste wise this time around. My Rating: 4 Stars. POKE BURRITO: Ahi Tuna, Salmon, Octopus, Sushi Rice, Cucumber, Edamame, Jalapeno, Avocado, Green Onion, Spicy Furikake, Seaweed Salad, Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, Masago, Wasabi Tobiko, and Shredded Nori, packed inside a Seaweed Wrap. Honey Wasabi Sauce was served on the side in a separate container. This was my first Poke Burrito, and I had the pleasure to watch how it was made. A sheet of seaweed paper is laid upon a bamboo rolling mat. The rice is added first, followed by the layering of all the other ingredients. Then it is all rolled together and cut in two halves. This one was back in tune and remarkably delicious. All of the ingredients and their flavors came together beautifully and danced in harmony with my taste buds. My Rating: 5 Stars. MANGO MOUSSE CAKE: I didn't want to leave without trying one of their house made desserts, which also included Tiramisu and Pistachio Cheesecake. The eye appeal of the Mango Mousse Cake finally won me over. It was flavorful with a soft and velvety texture, but I would have liked a stronger mango taste. I want to try their Pistachio Cheesecake during my next visit. My Rating: 4 Stars. I was feeling torn between a 4 or a 5-star rating. If half-star ratings were available, a 4.5 star rating would have nailed it. I am going with a 4-star rating for now, as it is my sense that their operation is still a work in progress that has yet to reach its peak. New staff members are still being hired and trained. They may do well to promote their new restaurant a little more actively on Facebook and Instagram, in order to help them get the word out and bring in the customer volume they deserve. There are also a few things on my wish list, the first of which is brown rice as an additional base. Although sushi rice is more traditional with Poke bowls, brown rice is always my preference. I would also like to see some watermelon radishes as an additional topping. In addition, I would like to see some of their seafood chopped in larger pieces, especially their octopus, as I enjoy being able to see their tentacles and suction cups. That's a little weird, I know. I would also like to see their avocado scooped out of a freshly cut whole avocado right in front of me, which is done at another local Poke spot I recently reviewed, instead of merely scooped out of a container from their serving line. It does make a difference. Finally, I would love to see some Matcha Cheesecake added to their selection of desserts. I have suggested most of these ideas during my visits and was told they would be passed on to their manager. I don't expect to see all of them, but I am hoping for maybe one or two. My service has been very friendly and accommodating so far. In the meantime, I will be stopping in on occasion with hopes to post an update to a full 5-star rating by the end of the year. read more

Downtown Norfolk is finally home to a Poke restaurant! If you're new to Poke, think flavorful sushi rice bowl... A lot to like here, starting with the friendly staff. Greetings all around, and they were very clear on providing and overview. The seating and decoration is also quite quaint. Cute lighting, sensible seating options, and well lit. Where Pokey distants themselves from others is their menu. Huge images, easy to read ingredients, clear instruction. I honestly couldn't improve it. The food, fair assortment of fish, with two tuna, salmon, shrimp, octo, Hamachi and vegan fare. They also had a lot of fruit mix ins, giving it that Hawaiian feel. Let's talk minor misses. I would've liked panko for my crunchy bits. Additionally, while I planned to eat there, everything got packed up without asking me. Lastly, I didn't see the drink options or extra soy (they might have been there and I missed them.). Most of these I would chalk to grand opening easy tweaks. Oh, Pokey also does dessert! Very impressive! I came by here on a whim during my lunch break. Funny, yesterday I googled poke recipes because I have been craving it so much and I seemed to have found a good spot that isn't too far from my job. I entered and was cheerfully greeted by the staff. They must have figured out it was my first time and they went on to explain how things worked, the sizes you can get and the toppings and mix ins you can add. It is set up similar to subway (I use them as an example as nearly everyone knows their set up). After you choose the base and meat, you can add whatever you want to the bowl. Some toppings have an extra charge like avocado but for the most part the toppings and mix ins are included in the price. You get a decent amount in my opinion, they aren't very skimpy with anything. Also, note: they have bubble tea!!! Mmmmmmm!!!! The restaurant itself is very open, bright and inviting. I'm not sure how long they have been open but it seems like they have a good thing going. Pokey was a REALLY good place for me to eat and try something new since I worked in downtown Norfolk. I would always order ahead (which is the picture provided) so I could hurry back to work. I even had a date there once. He liked it as well. One time at work which was my last time at Pokey, I went inside to order and as the employee was putting in my last mix-ins, there was a roach crawling on the counter by the mix-ins. I know he had to have seen it because I saw it. I cancelled my order. Never ate there again :( I have tried other poke places around Hampton Roads. The guy asked me how sweet I'd like my bubble tea - asked him what he recommended, and he said the 70%, so I went with that; it was absolutely perfect - just sweet enough but not rot-your-teeth-out sweet. My bowl was finished, and they offered me a free bowl of miso soup. Went home, and killed off the miso soup and about half of my bowl (I can never seem to finish in one sitting!) Second time I came back was yesterday with my girlfriend. I ordered a poke bowl (salmon and ahi tuna, sushi rice, honey wasabi, mango, pineapple, avocado, cucumber, seaweed salad, crab salad, shredded nori, and edamame) and a bubble tea (black, 70% sweet), and she ordered something along the same lines (although her tea was oolong and she didn't have as much in her bowl). Both of our bowls and tea came out delicious, and our drinks were free that night! He took the punch cards I had from my first visit and stamped the poke bowl (drinks were free, so no stamps).
