The space is basic, but the food is what keeps people coming back. The portions are big without feeling sloppy. The chicken katsu is solid: crispy on the outside, still juicy inside, and not drowned in sauce. The BBQ plates are dependable -- sweet, smoky, and cooked well -- especially if you like a mix of meats. Nothing feels overdone, and that's kind of the point. The mac salad deserves a mention because it actually tastes like mac salad, not some watered-down side. Creamy, simple, and it pairs well with everything else on the plate. Rice is cooked right, which shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. It's not trying to be trendy or upscale Hawaiian food. It's just straightforward comfort food that fills you up and tastes good. If you're looking for a reliable spot when you want something hearty and familiar, Halo Hawaiian gets the job done.

I also got some teriyaki sauce on the side and I'm glad I did because the pork definitely needed a little sauce. There were onions in the pork that I wished were cooked a bit more, they basically steamed. The flavor was delicious but the takeout bag leaked pork juice (?) all over my other groceries so that kinda sucked. That's the only reason for my 4 stars this time, but the food was amazing as always!

They share a space with other businesses in a somewhat food hall/bar type of vibe. Some businesses from the original "the block" food hall have moved here like snocream. There are a lot of different plate, bowl, and combo variations to choose from. For my first time, it was very hard to choose but I opted with the seafood combo which has fried fish, fried shrimp, and a choice of meat. The flavor is amazing especially the bbq marinade on the beef. The batter used for the shrimp and fish tastes the same, a little bland, but light batter not overly greasy. I'm not sure what authentic hawaiian food is supposed to taste like to compare this but I think the seafood needs some kind of sauce. Portion size is great, one combo plate can be shared between two people but u might want to have your own as you're eating it. The take-out menu vs. dine-in menu are a little confusing, I'm not sure which has the better value and/or if theres any difference in portion size or what-not but we got the to-go combo and just ate in store. The dine-in menu I was told just gets plated instead of put in a box but i'm wondering if you get more/less meat in that sense because why are there two different menus? Overall this spot is pretty solid and a different kind of cuisine thats good to have around the area. I will likely come back and update my review as I try the other items on the menu and as they continue to renovate the space.

My friend who grew up in Northern VA raves about HawaU as his favorite Hawaiian spot. To be fair,…read morethere aren't many options, so there's not really any competition. I added this casual spot to my list a couple months ago, but didn't have concrete plans to check it out. Driving to Manassas and back on I-66 from where I live would cost half of my brain cells and all my patience. However, a few friends and I drove out to Shenandoah this past Friday evening, and I made a convincing argument that HawaU would be on the way. By the time we arrived, we were all incredibly hungry and ready to wolf down anything edible. The ordering process was easy: we ordered and paid at the counter, grabbed a seat at one of the few tables, and waited ~10-15 minutes for the food (parts of it are made to order). LOCO MOCO (BOWL) - 9.99 The chipotle-sized bowl was topped with loco moco: white rice base topped with hamburger patty, fried egg, grilled pineapple slice, and a generous pour of beef & mushroom gravy, plus sides of fresh cabbage salad and mac salad. The gravy nostalgically reminded me of the ones I'd get from cafeteria-style school lunches -- thick, salty, slightly starchy, yet oddly comforting. The egg, hamburger patty, and rice were pretty standard, but the familiarity of the gravy tied the whole dish together nicely. Both salads were good -- the cabbage was more light and refreshing, while the mac salad felt a bit heavy after all the loco moco. Since it's my first time eating loco moco, I can't say how it compares to others. However, I found HawaU's incredibly comforting and hearty. It really hit the spot for me, and I ate the whole bowl within 10 minutes. The loco moco is definitely their signature option and a must try. My friends who got the spicy pork bowl and udon thought both were just OK and not special.

These are definitely supersized musubis. Each one is packed and you can tell by the weight of the carry out boxes. They have a nice variety of menu items which include drinks, onigiris and poke as well. Seating inside is limited but there's plenty around the restaurant. Wait times were short and we each enjoyed our food. There's a wide variety of musubis to choose from including the savory or health conscious ones. Definitely recommend some wet wipes as these musubis got messy.

The rice was so soggy!!!They put too much water when making rice, too much water!!! It's so easy--it's one to one (one cup of rice to one cup of water). Taking a bite felt like I was eating mush! Each bite was just plain nasty!!! DANG!!! 2. The menu -- many items on the menu are NOT even Hawaiian (i.e., Hawaiian Macaroni, Hawaiian Kimchi, etc.) -- in Hawaii, we DO NOT eat macaroni and cheese. The ONLY macaroni we eat is Macaroni Salad. As for Hawaiian Kimchi--there is NO SUCH THING! Thats a Korean dish and NOT a Hawaiian dish. Dont disrespect a Korean dish like that! 3. Plastic Wrap -- have we not learned that wrapping hot food items are bad to be wrapped in plastic!?!? Come' on people! There's chemicals in the plastic and when in contact with heat--the chemicals are now on the food!!! One positive...they have hand wipes to wipe your hands before and after you eat! Sorry but as a guy that was born and raised in Hawaii--I know what a good musubi is and this place DOES NOT CUT IT!!! Such a travesty and a disgrace to a Hawaiian delicacy!
