The roasted chicken is like nothing else and so flavorful. Ma favorite sides are the rice, plantains and the cole slaw. When dining in the serve you with real plates and when. You're done they'll clear the table. When they are busy this may leave the dining room cluttered, but fear not. I mentioned it once and they cleared plates and cleaned tables on the spot. So for a fast food type place, and this isn't truly fast food, why the missing star? Not for the food or the service. Mainly because the roasted chicken is not always available right away. The store on wheeler Rd. just remodeled and expanded to more seating in the dining area. There prices are a little higher then the other chicken spots so be ready for that. This time im not happy. In Huntington I ordered food in the confusion they got he order wrong .they replaced half my order with fried im gluten intolerance. No problem till I went to buy gift cards . Seems the computer was not in the mood or the operator wasn't experienced. But after the holiday we returned to use gift cards. But was told at first it will take 30 min. Then the manager comes over and says 45-1 hr. Wait. It seems they only cook it when asked . At first they said 3 roasted wings the rest is fried. Im gluten intolerant. NO! So we had to wait 45 min plus. So that time we waited. But the next time going from Commack to Huntington to eat were told the same thing. So fed up we came to Central Islip ironically the same issue. Now sitting for a 45 minute wait. I don't understand how they run things . You cant eat in a reasonable time. I don't think this business has add integrated into the world of America restaurants. I can get a T bone steak and bake potatoes in 20 minutes nearly anywhere. Last week, my dad was craving some fried chicken. He has always mentioned about Pollo Campero, a Guatemalan version of KFC that is widely popular among Central Americans. As soon as we entered the fast food joint, the aroma of chicken being cooked hit our noses... don't get me wrong; it's a very delicious smell. Anyway, we took our order to go. We purchased six fried and six rotisserie chicken pieces ,with two side orders of fries. When we got home, it was showtime... right? All I can say, is that it was disappointing what I saw, as we opened the boxes: very dark-colored pieces of chicken that were looking, very unappetizing at all! So here's the deal on this place....don't consider this a fast food chicken joint, because its not that, far from it. If you're expecting to pop in here like you do at a KFC or Popeyes, and race out with your bag of food a few seconds later, you are going to be disappointed, so just get over that fact immediately, because that is one of the main gripes I see from other reviewers. NOT FAST FOOD, got it? Good. Ok, so the day I decided to go, the line was almost to the door. I was with my kids, who were hungry, and we thought about dining in, but there was just no way. The place was jammed. I thought if I saw a table open up, my kids could grab it, but they are timid that way. Anyhow, I stayed in line and we decided we'd just order the food to go. So getting to the cashier to place the order took about 10 minutes, no big deal to me, I wasn't in a rush. The one thing I liked, is if you are lucky enough to get a table and want to eat in, is the presentation of the food. They don't put it on a cardboard box and dump it on your table. The meal is actually presented very nice ON ACTUAL plates, like a regular meal you'd have at home. This is why I don't consider it fast food, and if I was dining in, would be a bit more patient with my food coming out, because I know its going to be hot & fresh. On this particular day, there were hoards of people in the front area of the restuarant waiting on their take out order. After placing our order for the food, we joined that hoard, and waited as well. We waited, and waited. Many people kept going up and asking what's going on with their order. They were asked to be patient. Some people got fed up and left, others just waited. We waited. I will say, it took about 25-30 minutes to get our food. We didn't order anything special, a chicken sandwich, a chicken bowl, and a four piece, with yucca fries and regular fries as well. While we waited, I managed to drink a cupful of the Horchata, which I thought tasted very nice. I was able to fully refill my cup before I left. Once our food came out, we left and went home to eat. The only disappoint to me was that instead of them giving me Yucca fries, they gave me an additional order of regular fries. However, the chicken was out of this world. It was delicious, hot, and tasted fresh. My son raved about his chicken sandwich, and the "bowl" they put together for my daughter seemed like an endless amount of food. I was happy with this experience. So a couple of things to recap. We went on Saturday during lunch. This was probably a bad idea as all of Central Islip had the same idea....yeah, it was crowded and yeah, it took a long time to get our food. So what?? My point is that if you're coming here, understand that this is NOT a KFC or Popeyes. They are going to take their time with your order, but within that time, they will be ensuring that your food is hot & fresh and consistent with their mission of delivering quality food. I will be back, but perhaps during a slower time period, so I can sit down, and enjoy my chicken on an actual dinner plate, with actual utensils, and savor that wonderful Guatemalan style chicken!! read more

Our first visit to Pollo Campero. Had seen all of the reviews and we were looking for something of better quality than some of the other Chicken chains. Pollo Campero did not disappoint!!! We were greeted warmly by the server behind the counter. She helped guide us through our choices (all excellent) and our food was ready (hot and fresh) in just a few minutes. The store was spotless (and there was actually a staff member cleaning the dining area while we waited to keep the area clean). We appreciated the fact that the boxes that the chicken and sides came in were all vented. Too many times you order food somewhere and it's soggy by the time you get it home. We tasted the food as soon as we got home and it was amazing! The chicken was moist on the inside but crispy on the outside. It was so flavorful, too. This spot has some of the best chicken! I always crave it and specifically this location on Long Island is the best for me. Although, staff handling orders needs to improve. I get it! It can get really busy and you need to move at a fast pace to get orders out, but this locations staff always miss something in peoples orders. When I went recently, I saw that many people were going back to claim that they forgot to add an item to their orders. I should've taken it as a sign to check my order before leaving! I ordered 8 pc meal and went home to finding only 4 pcs. I immediately went back, talked to the manager, and she handled it really well. For the inconvenience, she gave us a 10 pc meal for free! And I still kept my 4 pc meal. I heard pollo campero chicken tastes better than pollo tropical. So I had to try it! I was parking the car while my brother in law went in with his girls and said he ordered chicken for 4 people. The girl at the register gave him 20 piece with 4 small sides, 3 drinks 2 horchatas for $62. The chicken was good, the salad was good but the order we got wasn't worth $60. We each had 1 piece of chicken and still had too much left over. The woman at the register has this resting btch face like she's annoyed with everyone. I really love the food at this restaurant. I love having the option of grilled chicken that is not an after-thought. After a long day I stopped at the Pollo Campero in Huntington but their machine was broken and they did not have any grilled chicken. I asked if they could place my order with the Central Islip store which was on my way home out East. I was assured they would place the order for quick pick up upon arrival in Central Islip. Needless to say the order was not placed and there was no food waiting. I was too tired to wait and simply left hungry. 20 minutes later I received a call from the Central Islip store saying Huntington sent my order over in a message which is not regularly used or monitored for orders. Today I got some promotional material for Pollo Campero in the mail. I had tried them years before and liked their food, so I decided to try out the location closer to me. Pollo Campero is one of many places that has a phone app for ordering. They're currently doing a promotion for 3 piece meal, when you buy a soda. Signing up and then pulling up the promotional QR code was very easy. The young woman ringing up my order was friendly and helpful. I opted for Yuca fries with my meal, which also came with a dinner roll. The chicken(I got the usual breaded, but they also offer grilled)was crisp, flavorful, and juicy. Yuca fries were crisp and have a slightly different taste than regular potato fries. I liked them and will probably get them again in the future. They had a decent sized drink station with several American juices and soda to choose from, as well as three different Spanish drinks. I got Lemonade this time, but next time I'll give each of the Spanish drinks a quick taste to see how they are. Might as well, right? This place sucks. My parents had both got food poisoning from here before, but I decided to give them a chance and try it myself. My buddy & I decided to come here the other day because he wanted to try it, he was told he could not get his choice of breast cuts because: " We do not have anymore, so we will give you thighs." Mind this was at only 1:45pm! I am not a fan of the cuisine at all as it is too bland and undercooked in my opinion. They were also too slow in the frontline. I was on time for pick up and they were so slow that you would think drying paint moved faster. They weren't busy inside but they did have 5 small orders to prepare. Mine should have been in that but they made me wait and started on the 6th order. No one had the common sense to say "Hey, what do you need?" after watching me wait for 5 minutes. The manager decided to hide halfway behind a wall as if it would make her invisible or something and only when I stared dead into her one eyeball looking beyond her "force field" or invisibility shield did she approach me. Why does this place bother having wait times if you can't get your "stuff" together and decide only to act like a pathetic child hiding behind a wall? I used to frequently pass by the Huntington location but never tried it because it was always late at night & it's not a great neighborhood. But I was already on Motor Parkway and was seriously craving some (cheap) latin food so I figured I'd finally try it out. Food-wise, it was a mixed bag. Grilled chicken had good flavor but the wing was the tiniest I've ever seen and the breast had lots of tiny bones that poked my mouth. The verde empanada was really good. The plantains were so-so. The biggest letdown was the wait. It was peak dinner hour (6:45), but 10+ minutes is too long to wait for "fast food." And that was after waiting in line for 10+ minutes behind only 3 other groups of people. Just really slow service all around. Doesn't help that I had no cell service in the restaurant to kill time... Lastly, and this is not a complaint per se, kind of amusing in fact, but the cashier asked for my name and then just wrote down "muchacho camisa blanca." Maybe she didn't hear/understand my name, maybe it's cuz I'm white (my shirt also), i dunno. But I didn't have any problems ordering in English, so I'm not bothered by it. Latino food chain Pollo Campero opens a new outfit in Central Islip. I'm happy to report it's just as good as the Hempstead locale except they don't have a salsa bar in this strip-mall location.
