    Fried dark meat.

Last week, my dad was craving some fried chicken. He has always mentioned about Pollo Campero, a Guatemalan version of KFC that is widely popular among Central Americans. As soon as we entered the fast food joint, the aroma of chicken being cooked hit our noses... don't get me wrong; it's a very delicious smell. Anyway, we took our order to go. We purchased six fried and six rotisserie chicken pieces ,with two side orders of fries. When we got home, it was showtime... right? All I can say, is that it was disappointing what I saw, as we opened the boxes: very dark-colored pieces of chicken that were looking, very unappetizing at all! The rotisserie chicken was way too peppery for my taste! I really had high expectations, but that's my opinion based on my experience.

small front area of restaurant, where you will wait for your order if you're taking out during busy hours.

So here's the deal on this place....don't consider this a fast food chicken joint, because its not that, far from it. If you're expecting to pop in here like you do at a KFC or Popeyes, and race out with your bag of food a few seconds later, you are going to be disappointed, so just get over that fact immediately, because that is one of the main gripes I see from other reviewers. NOT FAST FOOD, got it? Good. Ok, so the day I decided to go, the line was almost to the door. I was with my kids, who were hungry, and we thought about dining in, but there was just no way. The place was jammed. I thought if I saw a table open up, my kids could grab it, but they are timid that way. Anyhow, I stayed in line and we decided we'd just order the food to go. So getting to the cashier to place the order took about 10 minutes, no big deal to me, I wasn't in a rush. The one thing I liked, is if you are lucky enough to get a table and want to eat in, is the presentation of the food. They don't put it on a cardboard box and dump it on your table. The meal is actually presented very nice ON ACTUAL plates, like a regular meal you'd have at home. This is why I don't consider it fast food, and if I was dining in, would be a bit more patient with my food coming out, because I know its going to be hot & fresh. On this particular day, there were hoards of people in the front area of the restuarant waiting on their take out order. After placing our order for the food, we joined that hoard, and waited as well. We waited, and waited. Many people kept going up and asking what's going on with their order. They were asked to be patient. Some people got fed up and left, others just waited. We waited. I will say, it took about 25-30 minutes to get our food. We didn't order anything special, a chicken sandwich, a chicken bowl, and a four piece, with yucca fries and regular fries as well. While we waited, I managed to drink a cupful of the Horchata, which I thought tasted very nice. I was able to fully refill my cup before I left. Once our food came out, we left and went home to eat. The only disappoint to me was that instead of them giving me Yucca fries, they gave me an additional order of regular fries. However, the chicken was out of this world. It was delicious, hot, and tasted fresh. My son raved about his chicken sandwich, and the "bowl" they put together for my daughter seemed like an endless amount of food. I was happy with this experience. So a couple of things to recap. We went on Saturday during lunch. This was probably a bad idea as all of Central Islip had the same idea....yeah, it was crowded and yeah, it took a long time to get our food. So what?? My point is that if you're coming here, understand that this is NOT a KFC or Popeyes. They are going to take their time with your order, but within that time, they will be ensuring that your food is hot & fresh and consistent with their mission of delivering quality food. I will be back, but perhaps during a slower time period, so I can sit down, and enjoy my chicken on an actual dinner plate, with actual utensils, and savor that wonderful Guatemalan style chicken!!

I heard pollo campero chicken tastes better than pollo tropical. So I had to try it! I was parking the car while my brother in law went in with his girls and said he ordered chicken for 4 people. The girl at the register gave him 20 piece with 4 small sides, 3 drinks 2 horchatas for $62. The chicken was good, the salad was good but the order we got wasn't worth $60. We each had 1 piece of chicken and still had too much left over. The woman at the register has this resting btch face like she's annoyed with everyone. And that horchata is watered down and isn't very sweet.

How could any rate this place less than five stars? The staff is so accommodating. And the food is superior to other locations!

The sandwich was good no complaints the only thing is the sizes and price I got like a medium and it seem like a small for like $12-$13 and the giant I guess is large in there six's not to big that's almost $20. For that I can go out to dinner but I guess once in awhile if you want a sandwich you have to pay the times changed or make it yourself at home. Happy yelping

***MUCH BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE SANDWICH CHAIN*** ***FAST,…read moreEFFICIENT AND CONSISTENT SERVICE*** THOSE OTHER PLACES The other day, a few of us were talking about why sandwich shops like Subway and Blimpie, are so darn awful. One person, mentioned the sweaty-looking cold cuts, and phoney tuna. Next, someone brought up the not-so-fresh, wilted toppings. But then I added, that one of the most important aspects of a hero sandwich is the bread. And at these places, it's just so mushy, and fake-tasting. Even worse, it smells weirdly artificial. And that foul, artificial bread smell is the first thing that hits your nose when you walk into one of these places. "Hell", I said, "it's almost like the Pillsbury Dough Boy farted right in your face" JERSEY MIKE'S IS DIFFERENT Now being a sandwich chain store, Jersey Mike's is obviously not using artisan breads for their offerings. But the white, wheat, or parmesan rosemary breads are not at all fake tasting, and definitely form the basis for a good sandwich. And you can also order any sandwich on a wrap or even gluten free bread. A LOT TO OFFER Another big difference at Jersey Mike's, is the large number of sandwich choices. As there's at least twelve regular cold deli meat options, tuna, and a veggie sub. And on top of that, another twelve hot options with cheese steak, chicken cheese steak, and a fantastic portabella mushroom sandwich (more on this later). And for the best possible taste, all the deli meats are sliced fresh, and the ingredients for every hot sandwich are fried on a grill - not heated in a microwave as many other chains do. And lastly, everyone understands that fresh toppings are a very important ingredient for any sandwich. And so at Jersey Mike's, all toppings are of very high quality, and supremely fresh - you can definitely tell as soon as you bite into any sandwich. In addition, the oil & vinegar, the spice blend, and especially - if you enjoy spicy - the chili relish are wonderful additions that can bring the taste of any sandwich over the top. RUNS LIKE A CLOCK The management staff at each of the Jersey Mike's locations are definitely trained properly. For example, I have visited many of their different locations in New York, and in every case the restaurant & bathroom was very clean. And even when the restaurant is extremely busy during the lunch rush, service is very efficient, and the line to place an order moves quickly. WHAT I ESPECIALLY LIKE I've sampled many of the cold deli meat sandwiches, and they've really tasty. But my favorite sandwiches are the hot offerings, and this is where Jersey Mike's is far superior to most other sandwich chains. The cheese steaks, fried fresh with peppers and onions are great - especially the spicy #42 Chipotle Chicken or the #44 Buffalo Chicken versions. But my top pick overall, is the #64 Portabella Mushroom sandwich, made with fried peppers & onions. With this, I always ask for everything to be fried well-done, and then I top it off with a little chili relish, making this sandwich a fantastic mild-spicy vegetarian delight. CHANGE-UP Even though there's so many different items on the menu here, if you visit frequently, things can become repetitive. So to counter this - especially if you're trying to diet - you can order any sandwich as a salad. When doing this, the portion size is decent, but you may want to ask for some extra ingredients if your a chubby hungry guy like me. I usually order the Tuna salad, and put extra lettuce, tomato, and some banana peppers on it, to kick it up a bit. In addition to the salad options, Jersey Mike's periodically offers a new off menu sandwich. For instance, a Salsa Verde Chicken Cheese Steak was offered not long ago, and as I write this, The Classic is being offered, with pastrami, mozzarella, fried onions, pickles, and mustard. So taking all this into account, it's not surprising that I haven't visited a Subway or Blimpe sandwich shop in quite a few years. Without a doubt, there's plenty of these restaurants around, but after experiencing Jersey Mike's I'm just not satisfied with what they are offering. And once you experience Jersey Mike's, I'd bet you'll feel the same way too.
