For whatever reason, I have really wanted to try Pollo Campero. Perhaps it is because before moving here, I had only ever seen one in Mass. Anyways, it was good. Not fabulous, and not sure if it is authentic (though I am guessing not), but I definitely enjoyed it. I had the Latin-style chicken, black beans & rice, yucca fries, and a biscuit. They do know how to make some very flavorful chicken at Pollo Campero. I was not sure what to expect as the exterior and interior are the fast food style atmosphere. It turns out that you can expect a lot more than what it seems from Pollo Campero. I stopped here for lunch on a weekend. I went ahead and ordered the 1/4 chicken with yucca fries and warm tortillas. Or should I say HOT tortillas and fresh HOT yucca fries. The tortillas were not just hot but have a decent taste. The yucca fries were the best I have had in this area so far. Now the chicken, it was juicy and pumped full of flavor. I found myself picking the bones of all scraps of meat I could find. A great lunch that combined the strong flavors of the chicken with the subtleties of the tortillas and yucca. read more

Good alternative if you get tired of KFC and Popeye's. I think the chicken is a bit expensive for someone trying to compete with the bigger guys. The chickens are flavorful, but don't have its own very distinct taste. They also have yuccas which makes you think it is somewhat between Peruvian chicken except it is fried. Their chicken comes in two types: fried or grilled. I highly recommend the grilled as the seasoning is absolutely packed with flavor. The plantain and Spanish rice is delicious not greasy. The prices are reasonable and portions are plentiful. The bottled hot sauce they provide has perfect amount of heat. Will return when I'm in the area. Decided on a whim to try Pollo Camparo. Literally the worst food I've ever tried. Everything arrived cold except for the coleslaw. The coleslaw? Cubed cabbage with mayo & green pepper chunks. No fork or spoon or napkin included in bag either (after tasting it though that seems like a blessing in disguise) and the dinner roll came with no butter. The chicken nuggets were like they came from a frozen food section in a grocery store. The French fries? I actually laughed when I opened the bag and cc'd saw how small the container was. McD's kids meals have a bigger portion. Glad I only ordered for me because I'd be pretty ticked off if we spent more than $15 on this nasty food. Sorry for the harsh review, but wow. I will say that the Camparos sauce that it came with was tasty. It was literally thing good in the bag. I'd post a pic but just looking at the food so gross that I didn't even try to let my dog finish so it didn't go to waste was annoying so I walked it to the trash can outside. No worries about raccoons getting into it overnight. It'll probably act as a repellant. I ordered from the Elden Street location in Herndon VA. I hope Guapos on Elden will forgive me for straying from their always incredible food. Lesson learned. Btw- the delivery Dasher had ZERO to do with this review. He was super nice & respectful. Plus, the bag was sealed by the restaurant. If DoorDash requires them to check before leaving to deliver he would have had to break the sticker w/the Pollo Camparo logo on it to check inside. I'm new to DoorDash & other delivery services so I don't know if it's always been a rule to follow or just b/c of the pandemic but I don't care. I appreciate that DoorDash drivers don't debate how important "contactless" delivery is to their customers who request it. I hate leaving bad reviews since I know restaurants & franchises are doing the best they can to adjust to the 'new normal' so if a Pollo Camparo corporate customer service rep is reading this- I'm not mad about my experience. If the manager for the Elden Street location is reading this- I don't feel let down by your location. Just consider my review motivation to be more aware before sealing bags when it comes to deliveries. The quality of the food though? That's something corporate should address. read more

Don't bother getting any chicken to go; you'll most likely eat it all before you get where you're going. Some of the absolute best fried chicken I've ever had. The rice and beans are a nice addition to any chicken combo. My advice is to order more than you think you'd get, you'll be glad you did. Quick service, but the restaurant itself wasn't on the upper hand of cleanliness. Still, certainly better than KFC or Popeyes, and would definitely go there again read more

Whoever says it's better than popeye's is crazy. First of all I'm Salvadorean, and It tastes nothing like the one on El Salvador. Second, the costumer service is rude though must of them are spanish, white people treat you better. Third, they up size your order with out asking. To charge more. Three and a half---I don't eat fast food, but I'm glad i made an exception in this case! The ambience isn't much to speak of, although the tables and floors were clean and cleared of clutter. I wasn't expecting white tableclothes; after all it's fast food. I felt very welcome as the servers smiled and patiently answered my questions about the menu. I had empanadas, fried chicken thighs, campero beans, and flan for dessert. Although not bad in flavor, texture and consistency, the empanadas touted as "spicy" wouldn't detect enough capsaicin to register 100 on the Scoville; however, the beautifully spiced chicken was crispy outside, succulent inside, and uniquely layered with flavors of garlic, onion, tomatillo, cilantro and jalapeño. Or at least it seemed so to me. I was raised in the Deep South so I know my way around great fried chicken, and this chicken was remarkable. Almost as if flavor was injected into the flesh...mmmmmmmmmmmm... The campero beans deserve a paragraph of their own, as I savored each flavorful bite of pintos stewed in chicken broth with tomato, onion, garlic, pepper, and some bright acid--maybe lime juice? Even if the pintos were the only item on the menu, I would still return for the beans and order a family-sized portion to keep in the fridge for the odd midnight snack! Flan is mass-produced and inedible, I'm sorry to say :-( it had a rather gritty texture and left an unpleasant aftertaste of curdled sheep's milk. Even though it was a sour note to finish on, I have to give credit to this little fast food chain restaurant for the flavor infusion in the succulent fried chicken and amazing stewed pintos. read more

Pollo Campero on Elden Street in Herndon, Virginia is absolutely, unapologetically racist. I was standing there for 5 minutes, even said "Excuse me" a few times. She never turned around. However a latina customer came in behind me and started asking for the price of fries in Spanish and the clerk turns around and takes her order. When I start asking her, "Am I not standing here? I was before that customer in line." She starts laughing. This is not funny. And she knew exactly what she was doing. I asked for the manager and the manager came over to apologize, but at that point it was too late. I probably saved myself from spit and shit in my food. Because by not even knowing me, she decided that because I was Black (and I understand Spanish), that I didn't exist in her fast food service world. I had to go back to my car and get my phone to take pictures of the establishment to identify it. This business needs to close down if they are not going to serve everyone. This is bad service and makes all Pollo Campero look very bad because my family, friends, their families and their friends, and I will never spend another penny in any Pollo Campero. December 31. Brought coupon for BOGO meal about 5:45pm. Cashier had 14 orders backlogged, service was moving reasonably quickly; two trays of chicken legs, thighs, breasts of about 80 pieces fresh from oven brought forward as two employees filled orders among six visibly working. About twenty customers in the store; half waiting for orders. One Caucasian had had his order filled; we were only other Caucasians; all others of Hispanic or Asian appearance. In a clear case of discrimination, and the cashier being obvious that she did not want to honor our coupon, she said "your order will take two hours to be filled." I stated there's no way the existing backlog would take two hours. She repeated very emphatically, YOUR ORDER will take two hours before it will be completed. Guys, it's not rocket science. Your manager at this location is an a$$hole as described in practically every post. Show this guy the door, upgrade your quality of chicken, and fully cook it or close. Because, frankly I drive by this place 20 times a week and never see cars or customers. I don't usually eat fast food and I have to admit, I'm not a big fried chicken eater either. However I decided to try Pollo Campero for the first time after a stellar recommendation. I was not disappointed! For not being a fried chicken kind of person the chicken was actually pretty good. Crispy and flavorful on the outside yet still super moist on the onside. The fried yucca and plantains were pretty good too. The yucca is slightly crispy on the outside but soft on the inside and not soggy. The biggest downside for me is that I am nearly positive the chicken breading has MSG as it certainly tasted like it. As for atmosphere, not much to say as it is a fast food joint after all. There's a certain uniqueness to this place. I've grown tired of KFC and the like. Back on long island, we had a chain called "Pudgies" which was far better fried chicken and fish (not sure if they're still in business). This is similar to that, at least in the taste of the seasonings. As for the rest of what they offer, it's at least worth a try. The Yuca Fries (****), the fried plantains(*****), the tortillas(**), and the various more traditional drinks they have there. It's definitely different, and I suppose if I'd gone more than once or twice, I'd have aquired a taste for it. On a side note...their mascot confuses the hell out of me. In all fairness, I've only been there once. I might try it again because it's in a location that's convenient for me. Anyway, I had Lomo Saltado, which is my favorite Peruvian dish. The flavor was totally on-point; however, the beef was tough. That's kind of a deal-breaker for me. I would probably be more inclined to try the rotisserie chicken. I've heard good things. My experience was terrible, I won't be back and recommend you stay away also! Ordered a 16 piece chicken to go. When I stopped to eat my lunch 3 mins after I left, all of the pieces were cold or lukewarm. Some were rubbery and undercooked.. yuck! I tried to call back to let the manager know and request at least a partial refund. Both times I was ignored and hung up on. I tried to call back again, but no answer. Hmmmm... waited 30 mins called back. Got the manager again, I was explaining my grievance when I heard him talking to someone else and completely ignoring me AGAIN!! Extremely rude! This is really a 3.5-star rating. Fried chicken was good with crispy skins and not so greasy, although the drumstick and thigh were on the small sizes, compared to Popeye's. The fried yucca was one of the best. It seems like it was processed then fried and not whole yucca, however. The hot sauces are great. I've had rotisserie chicken there before and it was average. Now, if they have coupons, I'd be there more often for the fried chickens. read more

I rarely give five-star but this is one of them. This is the absolute go-to place for chicken anywhere in the US. The chicken is so moist, juicy, etc to die for. Even the breast meat which can be over cooked is fall off the bone good. Its Central American Chicken which is quite different from the average alternate Peruvian chicken you see all over the place. Entrance had a weird setup but I guess that doesn't matter. On to the food. Ordered the chicken empanadas and chicken bites (I forgot the actual name of them). Overall food wasn't bad.. Good taste. Chicken bites were juicy and well seasoned. Empanadas were spicy and cheesy the way i like them. Both items were super greasy tho. The plantains were delicious. Even with sour cream. Outstanding fried chicken. We used a coupon and it was my first time as I'm new to the area. I wasn't prepared for such a tasty treat the mango drink is well worth the not so affordability. As for the price otherwise it's surprising how well made the meal was for what we paid. Mellow moving service.lol and some of the attraction was lost in translation. I remember going to pollo campero back home and when I saw that there was one close by I decided to go. Initially when I walked in it took me straight back to Guatemala, the decor the atmosphere was spot on. Good chicken but terrible customer service from whom I presume is a manager. I've been to the Herndon multiple times and only have had problem with the manager with dark hair, 40'ish, glasses. First time he was unwilling to provide a mix of chicken - even after I ended up spending more money for a family meal to accommodate his instructions. Second time was spending 4 minutes arguing with him over the phone that I was given the wrong mix of chicken -- and him telling me they gave me what I ordered.
